About the P roject

The Seoul English Songs Project is a small voluntary group of undergraduate and graduate
students and Korean and native English-speaking English teachers currently or formerly of
the Seoul campuses of Myongji University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies
("Oedae"). We work together to produce better alternative English teaching materials by
adapting and translating English-language materials that were not originally made for
teaching English into forms that are meaningful and interesting for the Korean EFL
classroom. Most often we work with songs, especially traditional folk songs from the native
English-speaking countries, and sometimes with poems and prose that would exemplify the
history, culture, and society of those countries.

Our work is used solely for educational purposes and shared freely with other English
teachers in Korea for that purpose. No money is involved so there is no violation of copyright
laws. We are funded by our own membership.

서울 영어 노래 프로젝트는 소규모의 자발적인 그룹이다. 이 그룹은 현재 또는 이전의 명지대와 한
국외대 소속 학부생과 대학원생 그리고 한국인과 원어민 영어 선생님들로 이루어졌다. 우리는 본래

Introduction: Using This Book

In our previous work with songs, we broke new ground with every step we took. This work
with rhymes is different in that there are already several popular books of rhymes available
locally in Korea and internationally.

Still few, if any, popular books are on the market that provide complete and accurate Korean
translations. Here, we've found a need. For as with songs and poems, the reality of the
Korean English classroom is that much of what is presented to students entirely in English
will go without understanding. As we said in regard to our song books, "If they can
understand a song, they will be better able to appreciate it and then be more willing to accept
it as a learning tool. And they will enjoy singing in class more and ultimately, enjoy the
course more." So it follows with poems and rhymes as well.

Rather than try to make a book of rhymes in a vacuum, we've started by taking two popular
commercially-available books of rhymes and set ourselves the task of translating them.

Use this book by itself or use it to enhance your presentations of rhymes from either or both
of the commercially-available rhymes books we've worked with here. Scholastic's Book of
Rhymes and Rhythms, level K (Kindergarten) has an audio CD. Mother Goose Jazz Chants, by
Carolyn Graham, has an audio cassette tape. They are both readily available at English
teaching material bookstores.

Suggestions for use: (1) Disassemble the commercial book and then reassemble it, inserting
the pages of our book throughout to have the translations at hand. Or, (2) cut and paste our
translations into a corner of each page of the commercial book. Or, (3) have a student stand
and read the Korean translation of that day's rhyme to the class as you read the English.
