Write a story beginning with, I was happy to be in Group 10........................ I was happy to be in Group 10.

There were six members in my group. There were three other boys and six girls. All of them, just like me, were happy to take part in the district level language camp. The camp was held at a two-star hotel in Ipoh. We did not have to pay anything. Everything was sponsored. The members in my group came from different secondary schools in the district. But all of us were form 5 students. We were chosen to join the language camp because we had the potential to score an A in the SPM 1119 examination. Seri, from SMK Seri Permai, was our group leader. Seri was a very pretty girl. I had a crush on her. I knew the other boys also admired Seri. We named our group Seri Bombastic. In the first activity, we created our groups logo, motto and song. When we presented our song everybody liked it. Then there was a talk on how to answer examination questions. On the second day, we had several language games. We had spelling competition, vocabulary game, sketch and many others. Our group won the sketch competition. We presented a very good performance. We presented a story about a princess who fell in love with a fisherman. Seri played the role of a princess and of course I was the poor but handsome fisherman. The activities went on until 10.00 p.m. We were very tired but enjoyed ourselves a lot. On the third day we had a jungle trekking in a forest nearby the hotel. All instructions were given in English. We also had to solve some problems and answer tricky questions throughout the trekking activity. It was very challenging. The camp ended with a simple closing ceremony. Each participant was given a certificate. After going through all the activities I felt more confident that I would be able to get an A for English in my SPM. I would also miss my group members, especially Seri. I would never forget them. We

promised that we would continue to contact each other. Seri also English. [358 words] A Visit To A Hospital Yesterday, I followed my father to visit my uncle who was hospitalised at a private hospital. We left home at about 5.00 p.m. and reached the hospital at 6.15 p.m. The private hospital was a new hospital. It was opened two months ago. My uncle suffered from chronic diabetes. Two days ago he came to the hospital for his regular check-up but the doctor had to admit him because his sugar level was very high. The doctor had to monitor him all the time. He would be allowed to go home once his sugar level stabilised. My uncles ward was at the fifth floor. The lift was very spacious and fast. A nurse, who was my mothers old friend, greeted my father. She told us that my uncle was doing fine. After talking to the nurse for a while we went to Room 515. My uncle was very happy to see my father and I. A young Egyptian doctor was examining my uncle at that time. The doctor said that my uncle was getting better and he would be discharged soon. My father chitchatted with my uncle for almost one hour. I felt bored so I went out of the room to explore the new hospital. I went to the hospital lobby. It was like a hotel lobby. There was a long list of specialists and their academic qualifications on the wall. Altogether, the hospital had 35 specialists and some of them were foreigners. Then, I went to the cafe. I was surprised as the cafe was like a five-star restaurant. They served a variety of healthy dishes. But I would not eat there on my own as a plate of fried rice alone was RM7.50! Even a glass of plain water cost promised to help me improve my

RM1.00! Initially, I planned to have something there but I just walked out as I only had RM2.15 in my pocket. When I was waiting for the lift to go back to the fifth floor, a woman cried hysterically with her daughter. From her words, I understood that she had just lost her husband. I did not say a word but I sympathised them, especially her cute and charming daughter. I wish I could console her daughter. But before I could offer some help, the door of the lift opened and my father appeared. He indicated it was time to go home so I just followed him. I walked to the main entrance while my eyes still looking at the girl. [414 words] My Favourite Restaurant Last week, the SPM result was announced. The night before, I could not sleep. I was very nervous. I was scared I did not get a good result because my parents were really hoping that I could go to university. I went to school to collect my result with my parents. My hands were shaking when I held the result slip. My class teacher congratulated me. I looked at my result and hugged my father and mother. I got 5A+, 1A and 4A-. Even though I was not the best student in my school, I was very happy with my result. My parents were very proud of me. That night, my father took me and the rest of the family members to my favourite restaurant, Bamboo Restaurant. It was only five kilometres from my house. The restaurant was opened three years ago. I liked the restaurant very much because it offered a wide range of local, Thai and western foods. I would always try different dishes each time I went there. All the customers said the restaurant was very spacious. Some said Bamboo Restaurant was the biggest restaurant in town. When we arrived at the restaurant, I saw a big crowd. My father took some time to park his car. My mother said, We have a surprise for you! I insisted my mother to tell me

about the surprise but she just asked me to be patient. My family and I walked to a room which my father booked for us. The room was quite big and it could accommodate more than 50 people. When I opened the door, I saw many people standing while clapping their hands happily. They were my grandparents, uncles, aunties, cousins and immediate neighbours. I was really surprised to see my girlfriend with her parents too! Everybody congratulated me for my SPM result. I was deeply touched. I hugged my parents for organising such a dinner to celebrate my success. I sat beside Mimi, my girlfriend. She gave a gift but I had to promise her to open it at home. My father ordered my most favourite dish for all of us chicken chop with black pepper sauce. We also had garlic bread, salad and crab meat the best chicken chop in town. It was a long night at my favourite restaurant. My cousins sang a Justin Biebers song for me. My grandparents sponsored prizes for lucky draw. In short, we had so much fun at the restaurant. night. [435 words] The Day When Everything Went Wrong I had just started working as a despatch boy at an international company in Kuala Lumpur. The job was not great but I accepted it after failing to get a job in my hometown, Kuala Nerang. Actually, my neighbours son who was staying in Kuala Lumpur recommended me for the job. Living in a big city was totally different from living in Kuala Nerang. But, whatever it was, Kuala Nerang was still in my heart. After six months working, I began to fall in love with Lisa, a clerk at a primary school. One day, I approached her at a coffee shop. She was having lunch alone. I joined her. She was It was really a memorable soup. I always told my friends to come to Bamboo Restaurant if they wanted to taste

very happy and really welcomed me to accompany her. Nothing much happened on that day but we just talked. We got to know each other better. After lunch, I asked her if she would be interested to watch a movie with me on the coming weekend. I was surprised when she gave me a definte Yes!. From that day, we became closer and love bagan to bloom between us. Lisa confessed to me that she was worried about what some other people might say to me because she was ten years older than me. But I convinced her that age was not important to me. What was more important was her sincerity and happy-going attitude. Lisa believed in me. She knew I truly loved her. So, one day she asked me to meet her parents. On one Sunday, I went to Lisas house. I was supposed to be there at 9.00 am. However, I only reached her house at 11.00 am. My motorcycle broke down once I left my house. I did not know why I was so stupid not to take a taxi but waited for two hours to get my motorcycle repaired. It was supposed to be an important day in my life but everything went wrong. I also left my mobile phone at home. I borrowed the mechanics mobile phone to inform Lisa about what happened to me but I just could not recall her contact number. My mind went blank. When I reached her house at 11.00 am, I could see her parents unhappy faces. Their conversation with me was very limited. I was confident they were not listening to me when I was explaining about what happened to me. To make it worse, I left a box of chocolate, which I promised to give to Lisas mother, at the workshop. I knew Lisa was frustrated with me but she still treated me well. Lisa served tea and some curry puffs. I was very hungry as I missed my breakfast so I kept eating them one after another. Lisas parents were speechless to see my act. When I saw their shocking faces, only then I slowly put back the curry puff in my hand into the plate. It was the last piece.

After that, I asked for permission to go to the washroom as I really had to answer natures call. I was too clumsy. I fell in the washroom as the floor was slippery. My pants were soaking wet. I did not know what to do so I stayed in the washroom for about fifteen minutes. Finally, I came out with my wet pants. I quickly said goodbye to Lisa and her parents and left the house. It was truly a day when everything went wrong. Examination This morning I sent my son to school. It was the first day of his SPM examination. My son, Dean, was a diligent boy. Unlike me when I was his age, he did not need any motivation to study for examination. He was able to manage his own time very well. He made his own timetable. Dean knew when to study, play, watch television and go out to have fun with his friends. I really saluted him for his independence and maturity. I respected him because I was very much different from him when I was 17 years old. When I was in Form 5, I was a lazy student. Perhaps, the laziest in my family and in class. My parents especially my mother was always angry with me when she came back from work and saw me sleeping in my room. Even my teachers in school did not know what to say to advise me to study for my SPM examination. Mr. Nick, my History teacher, completed up on me. I really did not have any idea how could I prepare for my examination. I realised I could not blame anybody but myself. I was the one who refused to listen to all the advice given by my parents, teachers as well as friends. Even when the school organised motivational talks and study skills seminar, I would find ways and create excuses not to attend the programme. always his punished History me for and my laziness. I only picked up my revision books and began to study two months before the examination. My mother was surprised to see me with SPM books around me. She just could not believe her eyes. She did not say a word but gave me a hug while shedding tears. I promised her that though it could be too late for me to prepare for my SPM, I promised my mother that I would still try my best. For two months, I did all I could for my SPM examination. The result was announced several months later. Of course, I did not get straight As but I did not fail in any subject. I was at a Hi-tea that my parents had to attend. They didnt want to leave me home so I had to tag along. I hated every moment of it until, a young man not much older than me walked into the room. There was an aura of authority about him. Even the elderly VIPs stood up and waited to greet him. Young, handome, obviously rich and very friendly. Suddenly, the Hi-tea did not seem too bad. I was 15 and very interested in making money and becoming rich but I did not know how. I normally wait unitil my father introduces me to the guests but this time something about him beckoned me. I went ``Hi, up to him Im and introduced myself, Billy,

``Hello, he replied with a smile, ``Im Hisham. The name did not ring a bell and I think he knew I did not know who he was. ``Im Hisham, Hisham Santiago. I felt the blood go to my feet. This was the Santiago the young millionaire that my parents would often talk about. He was only 20 but was a selfmade look young. ``Im sorry to disappoint you, he replied and then we both burst out laughing. The funny thing is for some reason, he told his personal assistant to block off half an hour for me!! In that half an hour, from 3.30 to 4.00 pm, I became a changed person. Hisham didnt tell me the easy way to become a millionaire. He told me that I had to have passion in what I internet so millionaire. terribly ``Oh, my goodness! Im sorry. I did not recognise you. You

Question Health Sample is better than

2 wealth. What is your

(c) opinion? Answer:

(This kind of question requires a personal response. But, for each point you make, you must back it up with reasonable explanations.)

All the wealth in the world is useless if you dont have the health to enjoy it. For me health IS wealth. Its as simple as that.

If one is in good health, he can find wealth but show me anyone who can buy good health. Good health is a gift money cannot buy not even with all out latest technology. I am one of those who believe in being happy. I know I will be happy just to be able to jump out of bed every day and go for a run in the park or even trek up the mountain path. I would be terribly unhappy if I had to have help even to get to the bathroom.

So what if I have the latest motorised wheel chair to get me to the bathroom? Nothing can beat the joy of getting around on our own two feet! Isnt independence wealth? What price can you put on that?

Another of my passions is food. I love to eat good food. I want to be able to eat what I want and when I want. I dont want to have to swallow pills before I can tuck into a plate of fried rice! I cannot explain the sheer satisfaction of a good meal. Of course, I need money to buy the food, so wealth is important but again, there is no use if you can afford to buy wine and caviar but can only stare at it longingly. A person with good health can earn enough to afford that kind of food and relish it as well! I like to do social service. I feel good when I can actually serve a physically disabled person to achieve a task. I have done it before and I know how happy they are when together we finish a project. If

I have given them money, they would not know the satisfaction of knowing their own capabilities.

If I had just bought them an album, it would have been easier but because I am healthy, I could run around, get the stuff needed, rush back and forth without being tired and being there for them until the job was done. These are just a few reasons why I would choose to be healthy rather than be wealthy. If I didnt have to make a choice, I will want both. Who doesnt want to be healthy and wealthy!

Question

(d)

A person who scores straight As is a very intelligent person. What Sample do you think? Answer: I disagree wholeheartedly with the statement. I do not get straight As but I like to think of myself as a very intelligent person. I would also like to state that more than half my class will agree with me on this.

about

the

widening gap between parents and their children. My children are young adults now but I did go through the same problem and would like to share some of my ideas with other parents. First of all I would like to say that parents must talk to their children. They must talk about school, co-curriculum as well as about their friends and social activities. When I say talk, I mean that parents should let their children talk and they should listen without getting angry or upset. They should let their children know very clearly that they are `open minded parents and that they will always be supportive parents. In this way, children learn to trust their parents and will definitely tell their parents what is happening in their lives. Parents must take the time and trouble to know their childrens friends and also to monitor their activities. Parents should put down certain house rules. Some house rules cannot be compromised. This could be a age limit on having `dating. Parents can say that their children cannot go out on single dates but they can be flexible and allow their teenaged children to go out in groups and to places that they permit. Parents can help close the generation gap by getting to know the parents of their childrens friends. This is one way of getting quick information on where and with whom our children are. The teenagers also will be careful as they will know that their parents are in touch and are aware of their movements. Another great way to be closer to your teenagers would be to have family outings or family games. If your teenage son likes bowling, take the family bowling before having lunch

together. You could have a competition where the girls take on the guys. Teenagers love it when they see their mother and father in action. It also gives a chance to parents to show off their skills. And, when the teenagers see that their parents can `bowl, `sprint, `throw the frisbee etc, they begin to respect their parents. Their parents will suddenly become `cool and everyone becomes closer as a family. Have a party or celebration when your teenager achieves something. Teenagers need assurance that they are `worthy and capable of doing difficult feats. When you publicly show that you are proud of your teenager, it becomes very difficult for that teenager to go out of the parameters that you have drawn up for him/her. Finally, dont just show your love and affection by giving him things. Tell your teenager how important he/she is to you and to the rest of the family, school, community etc. Take every opportunity to tell your teenagers that you love them. They will respond in a loving manner too. This may not give all the answers but I tried and it worked and I hope my little contribution will help some helpless parent out there. Thank Yours Belinda Harring you. sincerely,

Continuous Writing (Sample Narrative Essay) Write a story that begins with 'I did not know what happiness was until...'

I did not know what happiness was until my aunts caring words sank into me on my graduation day. There she was sitting on the front pew, looking at me with loving eyes, proudly as I stood on the stage giving a speech. She was my angel. She protected me and cared for me since the demise of my parents. As an orphan, it was not easy for me to get acquainted to strangers. I had built a wall over the years to protect myself from being hurt. The fatal incident of a robbery left me broken and shattered. I could vividly remember the bloody tragedy. After my tuition class on Friday night, I came home in my friends car. When I arrived, I felt strange as mom and dad did not lock the door and left the gate wide open. Quietly and suspiciously, I walked into the house sensing something terrible might have happened. I was so shaken that I could not stop crying. Not even the paramedic could calm me down. I was escorted to the hospital. Somehow, they managed to contact my aunt. Her

hug and consoling words relaxed me a little. I was given a sedative jab and I fell asleep instantaneously. When I woke up, she was right there by my bedside. I felt safe and secured in her presence.

The police came to interview me. My aunt was with me all the while. I was kept away from the press and television for weeks for fear of my recurring hysteria. ______________________________________________________________ ____________________ I didnt know what happiness was until the unfortunate mishap. I have never been disappointed by the beauty of mother nature. It has taught me a lot about appreciating Gods gifts.

The story began on a bright Friday morning. I packed my bags and was ready to take on the adventure of camping in the jungle. At first, I was reluctant to go but after being

cajoled by my persistent friends, I finally gave in. It was a trip for sheer relaxation and nature learning. All six of us Ainul, Dayang, Farah, Suhaila, Yus and I finally agreed to meet up at the schools bus stop before embarking on our journey into the virgin forest.

As I was half way walking towards the school, it suddenly started raining. I hastened my steps to the schools bus stand. Luckily for me, it started pouring when I arrived near the school. Only then, I realized that I was 10 minutes late for the meeting.

Where have you been? We promised to be here at exactly 11 a.m., Ainul barked out.

Sorry, I had to run some errands for my mom and there was a storm out there, I explained. Anyway, were all here. So, lets not waste anymore time. Lets go, I quickly added so that Ainul would not dwell on the subject.

Thankfully, the rain lasted for five minutes only. We hopped onto a bus heading towards Indah Park. I was not sure if we were ready for a steep and winding climb up the hill in this wet condition. We arrived at the hillside alas and began to hike up about a mile of the Gagak trail.

It was a harsh climb as we were carrying heavy 10 kilo bag packs complete with sleeping bags, canned food and bottles of mineral water. I was the only one bringing the tent as the others did not possess one. Along the climb we stopped to rest for at least three times. At one place, we encountered a huge snake hissing at us from a bush about 10 metres away. We were lucky not to be bitten by it. We caught a glimpse Rufous of the beautiful hornbills, bluebirds and Collared

Kingfisher. After approximately forty minutes of walking, we finally arrived at our destination, in the middle of an open forest quite near to the breathtaking Indah Waterfall.

Now, lets start pitching the tent, Yus ordered. We loyally obeyed her command as we were the ones who chose her to be the group leader, being the oldest among us. It was already noon and we took out cans of sardines and loaves of bread for lunch before doing more exciting activities of discovering nature. Yus and Suhaila went to fetch some water, Farah and Ainul prepared the meal, Dayang laid out a mat for us to enjoy the moment of leisure in the forest. I was instructed to search for Dont go too far out, Yus firewoods. reminded.

Happily I went on my way gathering as many branches and twigs as I came across on my path. This should be enough for at least two days, I thought to myself as I had collected a bundle of them. As I turned around, I suddenly tripped over a branch and fell down flat on my leg. Ouch! My ankle, I moaned. I could not lift myself up as the pain on my twisted ankle was excruciating. I did not realize I was too far away from the tent. Moreover, I left my mobile with Yus. How can I ask for help? I wonder. At moment like this, all I could think of was my teachers advice. If you are lost in the forest, you need to sit quietly at that particular spot until someone finds you. This will ease the searching work. I did exactly that. Sit and wait.

Staring at the sky, it had grown darker. The dark grey cloud was pregnant with rain. I prayed hard that someone in my group would notice that I was missing.

Tickticktick. The sound of water dropping onto the leaves. I gathered all my strength, lifted my hips and tried to move to a big tree nearby. Before I could even blink my eyes, the rain started pouring cats and dogs. I sat myself under the huge tree, holding the bundle of firewood to my chest. All kinds of thoughts came to my mind.

I shouldnt have come. There have been too many obstacles. Its afternoon and it does not look like it, I whined. Did I make the wrong decision? I questioned myself.

I must have dozed off. When I opened my eyes, the thick lianas hanging and gripping onto the hundred- foot-tall trees greeted me. I could hear the sound of the creatures of the forest. Insects to chirping, play the geckos in in the hide my calling. It was strangely soothing. I felt at peace as the symphony continued ears.

Sheeda! Where are you? Ainuls call came piercing into my ears. Hey! Im over here, I shouted back in relief. I saw my friends running towards me. I told them what had happened. Dayang and Suhaila kindly helped me up while Ainul and Yus got into the motion of snapping pictures of the nature.

In the end, we spent the three-day break enjoying the beauty of mother nature. I realized that I had made the right decision.

clasped around my little sister's wrist. I breathed in the fresh air and allowed the soothing wind to determine my route. The serene park was quiet as the sun was just rising, its ray of light peeping through the clouds. I saw something in a distant shade of velvet red. Just one rose amidst the bushes. The rose somehow beamed unlike any other I had ever seen. It had not fully bloomed. There was an odd vulnerability to that rose. Pacing back home, my sister softly muttered the lines of a famous song. She sang, "The future's not for ours to see," and her voice trailed off as we entered the house.

That red rose sat on my dining table in a fragile, transparent vase. I could not help myself. It just had to come home with me. Day after day, my eyes were preoccupied wandering along the petals of the rose and and down its stalk. The first couple of days the rose fully bloomed. It looked brave and oozed confidence. That day, I received some thrilling news. My aunt had given birth to a healthy baby boy. The joy of the addition of another child filled the air. Toasts were made among the relatives and excited laughter drowned the baby's cry. Our life is sugar coated with many joyous memories. I pondered to myself what tomorrow had to offer.

Clumsily making my way down the stairs, I propped myself on a chair. Squinting due to deprived sleep, I observed my rose. At that very second, looking was just not enough. I caressed my fingers down the stalk. Thorns with such menace pricked my fingers and it certainly did hurt. I was however disturbed from analytically assessing my fingers by a phone call. my mother's wavering tone alarmed me slightly. My grandfather had been rushed to the hospital after suffering a severe fall. I could sense a certain level of panic in my mother's voice as she tried to be as calm as possible telling me she would be home late. Life does have its surprises. Some of them one never wishes for. However, life obeying the concept of balance will present us with hardship and turmoil. Sadness, despair and anger are feelings which we cannot hide from. I prayed that day that tomorrow would be a better one.

The rose, the following day, no longer stood confidently. It wilted to one side. The flower in my palm felt limp and weak. It no longer had the visual appeal it did several days back. My grandfather's condition, according to the doctors was not improving. The frail man lay lifelessly on that inclined bed with tubes and breathing aids all over his body. I could tell my mother and her other siblings were losing hope. They were far too distraught to bother to hide their visible emotions. Just like the rose they were emotionally weak. Seconds clocked away slowly as I wanted that day to end and step into tomorrow.

Black pigment on the petals of the rose gave it a lacklustre appeal. It was not presentable to put a dead rose right in the centre of my dining table. Finally, the time had come for me to dispose of that very flower. As a family, we performed prayers and rituals for my grandfather who had passed away. Death had to come and it awaits all of us. Similar to disposing of the rose, we had to let my grandfather go. Who are we to dictate the cycle of life? No one. My family and I merely accepted his fate. That day was gloomy and silence was not once broken. I clasped on to the very same hope that tomorrow would be a better day.

Life hands up the golden opportunity of seeing uncountable tomorrows. As a being in this world, the only armour we are given to survive the downfalls and conflicts is our hearts. When our hearts stop hoping, our minds stop believing, and we stop living. My sister sang the perfect tune: "The future is not for ours to see". Our path in life lies before us but until we see the daylight of tomorrow, we live in the dark. Tomorrow might bring joy. Tomorrow may hand us grief. I have begun to understand that time is the essence of our journey through life. Therefore, tomorrow is the door to the future.
