Evaluate approaches to self-managed learning

(1.1)

This report will have the information about how self-managed learning can enhance lifelong development by evaluating the approaches to self managed learning, ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could be encouraged and the benefits of self managed learning to the individual and organisation. There will be also information about my own current skills and competencies against professional standards and those of organisation objectives. Identifying of my own development needs and what activities are required to meet them. Personal development opportunities I have got in meeting current and future needs. Self-managed learning is a way people or individual find different ways in learning things, which could be in the society they are living or at work that is a diversified environment. Self-managed learning also is about setting out the goals for the learning by evaluating the purpose for learning and ways to achieve such goals. People learn new things example the culture of different people, behavior, personality, perceptions etc. Individual can learn things not only in class but also through friends, newspapers etc. Self-managed learning gives people a chance to come up with their own strategy in learning, though sometimes people take a short term in learning something that could be maybe to enable them to pass the exam, or completing a project, it is important for people to acquire such knowledge for long term as the environment now is facing challenges due to advance technology people need that knowledge that they could use them in their personal and professional life. The following are the approaches to self-managed learning.

Lifelong development

The aim of lifelong development is for us to understand the potential and help us maximize this potential in work force today and in the future. When planning our future, we need to understand that career development is often a lifetime project and may require continuous learning. Simple guideline for development plan: Reflect on the overall process, not just when we first embark on this course but at regular intervals throughout our working life Review our progress regularly and take stock Revise our plan when developments or circumstances so dictate (BPP course book, Leading people and professional Development, chapter 1, page 5) Lifelong learning is all about continuous learning

personally that could contribute to the professional context. Individual could have personal assessment as means of lifelong learning by evaluating their strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threats (SWOT analysis). My strengths are good learning skills, ambitious, friendly etc, weakness is sometimes I get stressed when I am tired but I try to control it by having enough sleep and doing some physical exercises helps to minimise my stress, opportunities are continuing with further education and my threats are recession, money. SWOT ANALYSIS By evaluating personal SWOT this will help me with my professional learning using other tools which are selfreflective learning and continuing professional development (CPD). Self-reflective learning is about trying to review some opinions, judgements, personal understanding and actions that you are willing to take in a proper way and be honest about it. This will help me to link my professional development to practical issues that I have experienced in my life either socially or academically. SELF REFLECTIVE LEARNING Self-reflective learning could help learn new skills at work place also developing my personal skills through having work task and responsibility assigned to me. While self-reflective learning reviews things, Continuing professional development (CPD) combines approaches, ideas and techniques that help to develop my personal learning and grow to certain level of that I could link it professionally by planning and evaluating my effective learning that could be through others, accepting

judgements or opinions. Self managed learning and self initiation of learning process In self managed learning the individual takes the initiative and SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES I could learn through seminars, conferences what they have experienced over there and make changes for the future. Seminars and conferences gives people the opportunity to present their knowledge about something to other people who end up learning new things. Seminars and conferences helps people becoming confident in speaking in the public and develops presentation skills which are needed in the organisation SOCIAL NETWORKS There are different social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, My year book etc where people and my friends spend more than two hours a day chatting with other people and learning new things about other peoples information also I could learn through use of bulletin boards, internet and new groups. I can learn how social networks owners such as Mark Zuckerberg how he became successful, individual could learn and find their means of succeeding in their careers. INTERNET I can learn through internet such as different articles written by different authors concerning management studies, strategic, risk management etc. I could acquire such knowledge that could be transferred to work places. There are different sites that could be searched on the internet that help people learning things that have different information and services that people could learn from them. Through self-managed learning, individual such as myself have experienced personal things that there are ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could be encouraged. Step 1: get the big picture. It will be a statement outlining idealized description of your lifes outcome that will inspire you and create your target Step 2: brainstorm your thoughts to come up with a wish-list for each of your relevant life aspects, career, family and friends Step 3: set achievable goals, even if that means taking a larger goal or dream and breaking it down into bite-size chunks. A personal SWOT analysis is a great way to work it out Strength

Clear goal setting an overview

Weakness Opportunities Threat Step 4: Prioritize goal setting is a skill, how to set goals takes time and practice to become proficient. Once you achieve the easy, single goals, youll feel motivated to try the process on some harder goals and confident in applying the process. Step 5: when you have a set of personal goals that are meaningful and will help you achieve your big picture, all you need to do is develop your chosen goals and make sure they are SMART: Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time - bounce

.1.2 Propose ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could be encouraged:

1.1.1. Kolbs learning cycle:

Concrete Experience ( Do )

Active Experiementation ( Plan)

Reflective Observation (Observe)

Abstract Conceptualisation (Think)

Kolbs four stage learning cycle shows how experience is translated through reflection into concepts, which in turn are used as guides for active experimentation and the choice of new experiences Concrete experience, either planned or accidental and where the leaner actively experiences an activity, is followed by Reflection, when the learner consciously reflect back on that experience Abstract conceptualization is where the learner attempts to conceptualize a theory or model of what is observed. Active experimentation is where the learner is trying to plan how to test a model or theory or plan for a forthcoming experience

Personal Set aside each day for yourself a little time to learn. Learning and doing homework, reading books should have benefited my life. -

Professional I need to participate in the long course and short term, be useful for future careers, such as courses to communicate with customers, soft

Learning every day is the most basic method to improve myself forever.
-

skills, continuously improving English. After learning these things, I will apply their knowledge to practical work, which draws from the experiences themselves. Then I will use my knowledge to share and exchange with people in the same profession as me.

We should also do the daily schedule for ourselves. Every day have a lot of work to do, if not order them again, I will miss my work. Moreover, when there is a logical schedule, it will help my daily life became more reasonable.

Participate in group activities; the forum is also developing a form of lifelong learning. In the group, the knowledge that I read, learned will be brought to share with everyone, so, knowledge that I know will be known by others. When all participants share the feeling, comment me, I will have deeply sight on what they share, therefore my knowledgell become richer.

1.3 How to evaluate the benefits of self-managed learning to the individual and organization (Outcome 1.3)

There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to Self-managed learning.Self-managed learning is mainly about being able to shift from rudimentary or directed learning to a more flexible form of Independent learning. As Martin Knowles asserted, Adults learn when they want and what they want. However for this to be successful there needs to be a joint effort from both the learner and the Organisation.

1. For the individual there are many advantages as to why a continued interest in learning can help them grow in the organization. For the individual it gives them greater freedom of choice is a flexible way of learning, and is, by definition, specifically tailored to what they need. as an evaluation tool, did the learning achieve any of these targets or agreed goals in the agreed Developmental Plan

More Skilfull, Better Communication Student centered, more willing to learn More efficient willing to learn- empowered to learn use of technology to learn, anytime, anyplace, any pace. Can be turned into a habit and hence become lifelong.

2. For the Company it helps to complement and reinforce other more formal development activities. It also helps in staff retention and reduces the usual fall-off from learning. Another reason why organizations prefer this method is that it can be carried out continuously, as an integral part of day-to-day working activity. Last but not least it places greater responsibility on the individual to empower themselves and take the initiative in planning their own personal development. cost efficient on the job training Team working was it tailor-made has the training

2.1. Evaluate own current skills and competencies against professional standards and organizational objectives

After 2 years, I have the desire to become employees of the hotel Intercontinental Hanoi purchasing. This job requires skills not so much difficult, but I'm on the process of cultivating yourself to achieve my desired job. To be a purchasing staff needs a lot of soft skills as well as office skills needed. So I went to learn those skills, think about them, assess yourself against the skills I need. Based on that, I will have the right steps; create the basis for learning more in the future. The following is my assessment of my ability compare to the skills that I aim to target. Grade 1 2 3 4

2.2. Identify own development needs and the activities required

The learning process is a cyclical process in which I need to identify your development goal, initiate the action(s) that I need to reach my goal and then periodically I have to evaluate my progress. Taking time to evaluate and reflect my progress is essential to enable me to make necessary changes to my plan. When evaluating my progress i need to ask myself:

What have I learnt? What more do I need to do to achieve my goals? Is my progress too slow or ahead of schedule? Do I need any assistance to achieve my goal? Whats hindering my progress? Do I need to change my plan? What additional benefits am I gaining from the process?

Development is a process of expanding advanced skills as well as themselves. This development will help my career path advancement far. Job I dreamed in next two years will be a purchasing staff in a 5-star hotel. After graduation, to take such a job is not easy but I'll try to learn and experience more to achieve what I want. When being in that position, I have to do one of the following tasks: There are some other skills that a big organization use to evaluate a good purchasing staff, and I think after getting my job, I will often improve it to be a good one in purchasing major. Evaluate True Cost Buying safely Caring about Inventory Flow Saving transportation cost . I want to before getting a job; I will join with the goal IELTS exam score higher. 2.3. Indentify development opportunities to meet current and future defined needs

To achieve the skills outlined above, I need to take more courses to cultivate myself. I thought the course was really necessary and valuable for people who do purchasing. IELTS: is the International English Language Testing System, the worlds proven English language test. IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) through more than 800 test centers and is recognized by more than 7,000 institutions over 130 countries. Now, I have finished the course of Tyndale and English are the highest level, so the score for IELTS is converted into approximately 5.0 - 5.5. I want to before getting a job; I will join with the goal IELTS exam score higher. 2.4. Devise a personal and professional development plan based on identified needs Personal development is the process of individual self-development, empowering the individual to take active responsibility for their own growth and development. Professional and personal development helps an individual to become an effective and confident self- directed employee. The process requires a personal development plan based on awareness, reflection, goal setting and planning. By identifying aspirations, strengths, values, skills and competencies, strategies can be learned and implemented to develop personal style and interpersonal skills to improve my performance and quality of work. Session 1 Session 2 Session 3 Session 4 Self-appraisal: Skills audit to identify own development needs and the activities required to meet them Developing a personal and professional development plan Skills to continually review personal and professional development plan Transferable skills: communication, time management, cycles of activity monitoring, reflecting and planning

By the end of the plan delegates I will be able to:

define and execute a personal development plan identify current and future needs to support career development take responsibility for own personal and professional development identify and develop individual competencies Evaluate and implement effective time management and organisational strategies Apply goal setting techniques Demonstrate acquired interpersonal and transferable skills

Skills required Negotiating skills

Plan to development sensitivity and observing customers and know their mentality could help make the most beneficial decision for me, I want to develop this ability by observing people in their daily activities and give some comments as well as collecting the experiences of each person's behavior

handling the situation well

contradictions and problems usually come on suddenly, it's the situation we are not prepared. to be able to handle situations in a professional manner we ourselves have to be cultured and dignified

behavior, quickly captured the situation and make rational decisions. I think this skill requires good intelligence and communication capabilities. workflow management and planning Time management is life management. When time is managed effectively, our lives have become better. In my university, I was taught how to manage time in a very easy way. I need to set a detailed and clear timetable. The more detailed it is, the more coherent way that I can manage my life. Schedule starting from waking up until I fall asleep. It is integrated into the phone and I will be usually reminded what to do. English skill As said above, I had a certificate of Tyndale English, but it was not widely recognized by many organizations worldwide. So, now I'm still improving my English by doing all assignments in English, regular communication with the foreign teachers if having the opportunity, and this year I will enroll in an IELTS class to be able to get a better English certificate within 2 years. Computer skills With the management of computer skills are important, the ability to use the software and the management of these problems when there are problems. This skill can be developed through additional courses

3.1 Discuss the processes and activities required to implement the development plan Development is an ongoing process which enhances an employee's contribution in his/her existing position, assists in preparing him/her for future job opportunities, and helps ensure the availability of competent, qualified employees to achieve an organizations business plan. The development process can be informal since new challenges and opportunities confront us in our daily work situations; or the process can be formal through a systematic approach leading to a documented plan. The formal development process provides background and focus, which help maximize the value of the individual experiences. To create a development plan can have maximum effect; I had a small conversation with a person with long

experience in purchasing at the different hotels. The exchange said about the experience, the skills needed in purchasing.

Name: Phung Thi Phuong Lien Aged: 45 Job title: Purchasing Manager Assistance in Intercontinental Hanoi Westlake Hotel Experience: about 20 years in hospitality industry and 10 years work in purchasing department 1. How old were you when having 1st job. Was it belonging to hospitality industrial or purchasing major? I have my first job in 21 years. But it wasnt related to hospitality or purchasing job. My first job in aviation industry. Then, I had to work overseas for a while, after that, coming back in VN, I decided to apply for a job in Somerset Westlake Hanoi Hotel and started with the hotel industry. 2. Which position did you get in hospitality industry? How could you develop yourself to get current position? My first job was working in a hotel is the housekeeping staff. Then I went through some other positions such as restaurants staff, restaurant assistant, and chief of the hotel restaurants of Somerset West Lake. About 8 years after the first job in Somerset, I officially accepted a job related to purchasing. Then I transferred to Hanoi Tower, a fruit exporting company, and Intercontinental Hanoi, were made in the purchasing office. I myself when transferred to the hospitality industry was difficulty. But, thanks to English communication skills for sure, I can learn directly from the foreign managers. further, I also participated in various classes for the professional skills required by companies organized as communication, class customer service skills, shopping skills, to quote, now I have become are extremely challenging to any of the purchasing industry.

3. Which skill did you have to improve when doing as purchasing staff?

Purchasing staffs tasks arent be under pressure as Finance Staffs tasks, but at least I have experienced myself these skills:
handling the situation well

negotiation, negotiation with partners

workflow management and planning coordination goods

monitoring and supervision

Proficiency in English is an advantage Working fast, careful

After having a small interview with Ms. Lien, I had a personal development plan for myself. Now, when I am a student in university, I will try hard to learn the knowledge was taught; make that be my own knowledge. I will also often improve my English, as the interview I can tell that English is an integral part of the hospitality industry. Be open and friendly as well as a way for me to build relationships now. The relationship is very much helpful for purchasing staff. My personal plan in 2010 - 2014 priority is to complete the program associated with the University of Sunderland. To accomplish this plan, it has been greatly affected my life, I need a timetable to sort the work reasonable, the allocation of time between study, leisure and work. Besides that is also acquired a lot of useful knowledge, improve my English, exchange friends, expanding many relationships, improve communication skills through clubs, homework , controversial issues ... it can enhance group activities, problem-solving skills, understanding the psychology in many situations ... With the help of university manager and teachers, activities expansion of the class more, as self-managing a site related subjects ... PPD seek information, share in the forum, through which the people would comment, make suggestions, and help each other to understand the problem, expand their knowledge ... There are also start-up business clubs, where students not only participate, but also professionals, employees or management class ability to participate, through which I can learn, to improve the communication skills needed themselves. To become a senior manager for about 3 years, I must strive to so many, from the basic skills of negotiation, communication, management, accounting, statistics ... more professional.

3.2 Undertake and document development activities as planned As in task 3.1 we already discuss, purchasing is a job that requires many different skills, including soft skills and office skills. And to be able to hone those skills all need a long time to learn and practice. I began my first step was a student from using the simple job but very useful for his later work. First, i have recently joined a leading People and Professional Development forum. I have a chance to become admin, shared my knowledge about personal development, as well as learned much more through the sharing of other members. Next, to have a life time and work appropriate, I have set a timetable on Gmail and integrate with the phone for easy tracking. When this table, I see clearly what I must do in the days of the week, and do not forget my tasks. Apart from improving the soft skills needed, I also equip myself with a little English to be able to communicate confidently. In addition to achieving Level 4 in English of Tyndale program, I have been involved English communication course at British Council, Language Link, and a TOEFL course in the Equest Academy. I want to become a manager, from now on I need to learn, accumulate the experience, improve soft skills and expertise for my future. It is a long term learning and I need review honest of myself. . To learn the things not in book I have took part in the admin of Leading People and Professional Development Group which have more than 8000 members. When sharing the information and knowledge to the others I feel happy because my knowledge can help the other members and every members can share information with me. This is learning process and I can improve myself so much.

I am running a small business to increase my income and also experience the facts in doing really business. I make a Facebook to easy to cantace with customer and facebook is a good free way of advertising

3.3 Reflect critically on own learning against original aims and objectives set in the development plan My path is the future seems very clear, and it looks like a straight path so. but in fact, there are many obstacles on the road I go. It is the difficulties of my own shortcomings, from the effects of life. My first difficulty is my character. I have not the definitive character and dependent, so I think it is the biggest barrier when I want to stick with his dream. Dream is big, but going through the steps in life, that dream is becoming harder for me, and my personality will make my dream and I have a big distance. My 2nd difficulty is time management. Before joining the Leading People and Personal Development class, I do not have the habit of setting time for myself. I usually work my liking, outside of class time, the other activities I never planned The 3rd one is the ability to communicate. I am very easy to talk to people, but the first contact, I used to be afraid. So my ability to communicate is not as effective as desired. In addition, I usually do not keep normal relations a long way, there is also a major obstacle on the path to my dream Plans and my dreams is to make clear, but it is also quite many obstacles. I myself have a lot of serious omissions. First I was too busy playing. I use a lot of energy and time on useless things. I need to know what the main focus and manage their time more efficiently. to make the great dream that I need to change their thinking and take the time to learn more. The second is how my talk was not perfect. I want to improve their speaking ability. I know the power of words. Speech is a powerful weapon to help me become a great leader In the way to become a successful person I have to overcome many difficulties and challenges. I have to face with difficulties and challenges every day to be more confident and more mature, then I will have experience in solving the problems, more flexible in every case and situation.

3.4 Update the development plan based on feedback and evaluation

Skill Time management

Plan to developed To me, life runs on time, and how much I have. Right now I am going through the college application process, and I always have so many things to do. I'm still waiting to get a break and this has been going on since last summer! It's alright though, because I am dealing with my time the right way and getting done what needs to be done. When it comes to school, I used to be really bad about managing time, because all I wanted to do was watch TV and play video games. This wouldn't help me and I always felt I was pressed for time. Now I come home and just start on homework, and make sure it's always first on my agenda. This way I have so much time for everything else. The things I always make time for are my family, my homework, school, and friends. Those are the things that are most important to me. My best advice for time management is this: always do first what needs to be done, no matter how much more fun other things sound. Why? Because one way or another, you're going to have to finish it and get it over with, so why not get it out of the way? I try to anticipate and predict possible causes of confusion, and I deal with them up front. 2 When I write a memo, email, or other document, I give all of the background information and detail I can to make sure that my message is understood. 3 If I don't understand something, I tend to keep this to myself and figure it out later. 4 I'm sometimes surprised to find that people haven't understood what I've said. 5 I can tend to say what I think, without worrying about how the other person perceives it. I assume that we'll be able to work it out later. 6 When people talk to me, I try to see their perspectives. 7 I use email to communicate complex issues with people. It's quick and efficient.

Communication skill

Before becoming a good manager, I need to understand the conditions and work practices of staff at all levels. Improving the professional skills of the self, language, time management, finance, books ... These are indispensable skills and I can completely improve. The catch of the situation, understanding the skills that will help me see the problem better. In a company, management is not all good people skills, communication are important that they know the others have problems handling skills better, create groups to solve problems. Through which to create good relationships, the ability to team work, sharing information and knowledge. Management should recognize the talents and abilities of employees, creating a good team, encouraging them to work, create work environments, assign and schedule
