CHAPTER 2

MINI PROJECT

2.0 Introduction of Mini Project

Composing songs wether it is an instrumental or vocal songs are our mini project for these six months of internship in RTM, Kuala Lumpur. We were required to compose two songs at least and also in a total full recording with mixing that needs to be done in Rentak 50, Angkasapuri.

During the five months of internship in RTM, I had composed two songs entitles, Mospiration and Once A Memory Land. These two songs are both in a different genre and different tempo.

#$!

2.1 Composition 1 Mospiration 2.1.0 Introduction

Mospiration was a combination of 2 words which is Motif and Inspiration. Inspiration strike when I was practising using a motif inside the studio in RTM. The first 8 bars was in 9/8 and it started with viola and cello. Violin 1 and 2 plays together in bar 5. Time signature changed to 4/4 in bar 9. Theme of the song start playing in letter A. The whole part of A only the strings and the piano solo. Drum and bass start flowing in letter B. Besides that, tempo also change from 60 to 120 in bar 18. A change of rhythm and melody patern in bar 66 and end with blues scales.

2.1.1

Songs Structure

Mospiration is a composition of semi classical arrangement. Its a quartet with the accompaniment of full band without electric guitar. Melody will be mostly played by strings quartet and also trumpets in the middle of this composition. Idea and running of this song is basically from the inspiration of YAMAHA MOTIF. The beginning of this song is in 9/8 under the tempo of 60dbp. In bar 9, time signature change to 4/4 with the same tempo. Moreover, in bar 18 the tempo increased from 60dbp to 120dbp. However, there is one bar in the time signature of 5/4 due to the drum roll and a rest at the 5 beat to make sound like a short pause then only the drum comes in bar 26.

2.1.2

Melody

The melody for Mospiration starts with dotted quaver and semi quaver to show the melody of a 9/8 in bar 1 until bar 8. However, the theme of this song is obviosly played because you can hear it continually played. Moreover, different instruments took turns to take the theme melody line.

#%!

Figure 2.1 Melody line that accompanied by cello for the intro.

Basically, the whole song was developed with one theme melody. I change the rhythm but still keep the basic theme melody. For example :

Figure 2.2 Theme melody line

Figure 2.3 Theme melody developed with added rhythm and few passing note.

Theres a change of melody in letter E". The melody was inspired by the theme melody. However, it was not the same melody line as the theme melody. Example in figure 2.4.

Figure 2.4 Melody line in letter E

Towards the end of this composition, theres a total different of melody and rhythm that is out of the theme melody. I tried exploring in this composition with triplets. Basically it sounds 6/8 but I maintain 4/4 but add triplets to let it sound 6/8.

#&!

Figure 2.5 Triplets melody that out of the main theme melody.

2.1.3

Instrumental

The composition of this song is a string quartet accompanied by a full band. Its a semi classical arrangement. I tried to fill in some guitar lines but unfortunately I lack of ideas in this area. Instruments that used in this composition was the string quartet, includes the violin 1 and 2, viola and cello, piano, bass and drum. String quartet was the main contrast of this composition. Viola and cello started with the intro. However, there are parts where string quartet was silent because wanted to highlight the trumpet and the drum. For example :

2.2 Composition 2 Once A Memory 2.2.0 Introduction

The second composition Once A Memory was a song I compose 2 years back. Its an instrumental music featuring piano. However, this song was played alone using only piano and was rearranged back with full band. This song is mainly about a girls memory of her first relationship and she decide what is best for her and she chooses to leave and live her life to the fullest. Each section of this song shows the process how this girl went through from a unforgetabble memories until how she used it to stand up and face what God prepare for her. Special thanks to Hezron Diman on drums and bass playing, Elvin on the Electric guitar and last but not least Pendi Wong for the mixing.

2.2.1

Song Structure

In this instrumental composition, piano is the main character of this song. Melody was mostly played by the piano. This composition was actually a vocal song but due to lack of idea in nice lyrics. I changed it into a instrumental. The original of this composition is actually an individual piano playing. However, due to this mini project that had to be done for this practical project. I tried to make this individual piano playing to a full band with the piano playing the melody. Moreover, there are few changes was made towards the ending of this composition compared to the original ones. This song is in a moderate speed. Tempo is 90dbp and it is in the time signature of 4/4. This song is in the key of F#minor, modulate to G#minor to Bb minor then lastly to B major. Form of this song is ABCD form. Instruments used were drums, bass, electric guitar, piano, strings, pads and flutes and some keyboards effects.

#)!

2.2.2
the end.

Melody

The melody of this song was mainly legato and melodic from the beginning until

Figure 2.7: A Legato melody line for introduction.

In the first interlude, the piano plays a melody that drives up the climax, and the solo melody of an electric guitar after that was the climax the melody changes from minor to a melody of a major. This part is where the girl realizes and changes her way of living, never to turn back and she is happy with her changes.

Figure 2.8: A melody line that drive up the climax of this song.

2.2.3

Harmony

Chords progression used in this song is vi-V-I-V7. Pre-chorus part is D-E7-D-E7. Theres a changes of harmony in both interlude 1 and 2. To make a few changes to avoid similarity all throughout. I did a modulation 1 key higher in Interlude 1 which is G#m- E- B-F#-Gdim- G# and another modulation higher in interlude 2 which are Bb-F#-C#-G#-Adim-Bbm. The modulation up to keys is to make a

#*!

music climax and to express the boom in this song. Moreover theres another chord changes occurred in letter D which are B-F#m-D-F# repeatedly. The harmony changes here is to let the listener felt that the girl had made up her choices to continue living and to move forward and not to look back on the past. From a minor harmony to a major. Besides, from chord I to minor chord V was a nice chord progression and I learned it and try to apply in my composition. Last but not least the outro of this song is D- E- D- F# repeatedly for 3 times and end with F#.

2.2.4

Instrumental

In this composition, piano will be taking the main lead of the whole song. However, besides full band instruments, I add flute solo line in the first verse which is in the letter A and also towards the end of this song which is in the letter D in the score sheet. The function of the flute is to add in the emptiness where there is no drum. Besides flute, I used pads to also fill in the emptiness when there is no drum. I used soft pad in Logic Pro software. The soft pad is to give this song a warm background. So, most of the time they are only long notes go according to the chord changes. Another instruments that really give this song another feel is strings. I used silky string Section in Logic Pro software and a midi controller to play the string line. In this song, besides bass and drum to keep the foundation of this song strong, they give the right beat and groove pattern to build up this song. Last but not least, the Electric guitar is also an instruments that build up the flow of this song. The piano solo and the electric guitar solo in interlude 1 and 2 was the climax of this song.

$+!

2.3 Music Technology Used

2.3.1 Introduction

Throughout the whole arrangement for this mini project. I used a few music software to make this arrangement more easier. However, there are also difficulties in handling this software due to the rawness of the new knowledge of applying music software into this mini project. Software used in this mini project was Logic Pro, Sibelius and Addictive Drum in Fruity Loops. Moreover, I used a midi keyboard controller to record into Logic Pro.

2.3.2

Logic Pro

Logic Pro 9.1.8 is a music software that needed to download into a Mac Book Pro. Logic Pro make an easy work to me because I can just record through the midi controller. Logic Pro is a hybrid 32/64 bit digital audio workstation and also a MIDI sequencer software for the Mac OS X platform. In this midi project, my second composition Once A Memory used Logic Pro to record and then only send separate tracks to RTM studio and mix. Is easy to use this software because this software provides software instruments, synthesizers, audio effects and recording facilities for music synthesis.

Figure2.9: Picture of Logic Pro while doing my project.

$"!

2.3.3

Sibelius

Sibelius version 7 was used in this mini project. Sibelius was mainly to input notes and listen the whole arrangement more accurate. Is easy to use because we can hear back what we arrange and easy to detect any note clashing. Basically, before installing logic Pro, I used Sibelius to do my song. The first compostition Mospiration uses Sibelius to do arrangment. After finish arranging using notes, I export it into audio and send to RTM studio and mix. However, there are few difficulties in that area.

CHAPTER 3
3.0 CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION & SUGGESTION

Having this 5 months of intership here in RTM Kuala Lumpur is actually one of our subject where we apply what we learned theory vise in the university able to applicate in practical form here in RTM. Besides that, its also a credit to graduate as a final year student. This 5 months of intership is really a valuable period. Doing practical in RTM is actually a open eye for me to the reality of being a music graduate. I learned a lot in terms of arrangment, learn a lot in terms of technique, learn a lot from how they conduct their daily life just to improve their music knowledge. Moreover, is an open eye for me as a musician to the music industry here in Kuala Lumpur. RTM is a place where I experience watching a live recording. RTM uses live orchestra to make a new album. Moreover, the drum recording are all recorded lively. Strings players are all recorded lively in the studio. Every single one of their musician are so professional and they able to get the note exactly correct written. Their rate of mistake is as minimum as I can count. Moreover, 5 months living in the city of Kuala Lumpur and experiencing the music industry here is really a big difference from Kota Kinabalu. People here is really time consuming people, we can see by how they rush for trains and buses. Moreover, knowing great people like Dato Mokhzani Ismail. He is so professional, famous and yet he is so humble and talk so gently to us. I am amazed with musicians that I met here in Kuala Lumpur. People like abang Hassan, legend but still willing to share. Throughout the period of intership here, there is this one musically vise brother in RTM gave us a very clear music knowledge. He has no hesitation to share his knowledge in music who is Abang Ismail. He teached me how to applicate modes in solo without even stick on the modes so often. He teaches how to feel a rhythm, how to feel a song by counting in the n. Abang Ismail shared a lot of his experience as a musician in Kuala Lumpur. Besides abang Ismail, there is

$$!

another person also taught me a lot, that is Leonard Yap. He is great pianist and also a great arranger. He taught me how to practise ii-V-I in an easier way. He taught a better handskill technique while soloing. Experiencing live show recording is also a new thing to me. I have this opportunity to see a live recording show. I attend two live shows. The set up and preperation for any progrmamme live recording is so important, you cant afford to do any slight mistake. Both shows a live orchestra playing.

3.1 Suggestion in Improving Internship

There are few suggestion made in order to improve any practical student that chooses RTM Angkasapuri to do their intership. One of my suggestion was given a supervisor that can supervise us full time. This helps in occupied Haany practical student fully. Occupied practical student in giving task or assignments to catch up every week. Besides that, arrange a mentor to every single practical student is also a suggestion that can keep up the improvement between the few months doing their internship. Each mentor will probably give task or work to let their menti to do. This also helped in giving a task earlier on, so practical student wont cracked their mind what to do next other than practise. Having recital performaces once a week is somehow a good suggestion. It helps in exposing practical students in performing to public professionally and albe to accept critics or comments professionally. This also helped any practical student to build up their comfident in performing what have they learn so far during internship. Due to the lack of exposing to any kind of workshop. Suggest any workshop or giving workshop is also a suggestion to occupied time doing practical in RTM Angkasapuri. Practical student can learn how to conduct a workshop, besides its given a chance for practica student to recognize local professional musicians. Moreover, practical student can learn through workshop with more details technique application.

3.2 Conclusion and Suggestion In Composing and Arranging song.

3.2.1 Conclusion in Composing Mospiration and Once A Memory
The main reason of composing new song is to accomplish the mini project that was given as one of our task doing practical in RTM. Throughout the process of composing and arranging. We learned that, composing is not just composing a melody and put in instruments but to really understand what melody suits what kind of instrument to bring up the drive in our composition. Composing is actually not a tough task but to developed your compose to a music that unforgetable is really need a hard time. There are few ideas was given to improve both of my composition. Mr. Leonard Yap given few ideas and suggestion to make my compostion an interesting piece. However, there are few difficulties in applying because I was not firm with the tension chord he suggested.

Figure 3.1 This is Mr. Leonard Yap that help me a lot in playing and arranging.

Composing this two song Mospiration and Once A Memory is a tough work for me. Firstly Mospiration was mainly using Sibelius to compose. In terms of feel and playing freely is restricted because there are few articulation was hard to write down. However, after having Logic Pro software made my second song Once A Memory an easy arrangement in terms of play directly throught the midi controler. By playing this way, there is some filling you able to applicate into your

$&!

composition. However, by jamming with the rest of the practical student also generate new ideas into my composition. In this composition and arrangment, I have lack of time in record lively in studio. Due to time consisting, I record myself using midi keyboard controller to record the piano, strings and pad. Drum and bass and guitar asked other practical student to record their own line. Moreover, guitarist I seek helped from a friend in Kota Kinabalu. Due to commucation vice, there are parts of comping clashing with my melody line. However, his overall guitar line gives a drive towards my song though there are difficulties in recording area. Proses from composing, arranging until recording took quite a long period. Both songs equally took the whole period of practical moment in RTM Angkasapuri. However, there are always difficulties and also suggesion in improving difficulties.

3.2.1

Suggestion in Mini Project

Suggestion in improve this mini projecto or thie final assestment thesis is to arrange a time table. By making a time table, it helps a lot in managing time and the determination to finish every task in the exact time. By making a time table, we able to approxiamately know how to prepare in doing this project. Moreover, prepare a proper time for a studio recording to any practical student. Due to RTM is very busy in doing live recording. Studio was mostly occupied with pilation of recording. If there is a peroper time where there was no recording for that period of time, practical student can at least finish their work within a certain period of time in order to record the songs in studio. Moreover, it wont waste time in recording while in studio.
