General Training Test 12; Page 13

ieltshelpnow.com

Being Green and Recycling in the Workplace A Green Office Purchasing green office supplies helps reduce the impact of your business on the environment and reduces overall resource consumption and waste pollutants. So why purchase green office supplies? Green supplies are often cheaper and more economical. Standard stationery items are commodities sold purely on price; they are often disposable and have short lives. In contrast, green products tend to have longer lives and are re-usable, offering good cost savings to your business. Some green items, like printer laser cartridges, also offer direct price advantages, because they use recycled components. A green office can create a caring culture in the workplace. Using green products creates a positive staff culture from a sense that employers are caring and have long term goals. Very often the introduction of recycled papers into an office has the effect of reducing the amount of paper consumed, as staff take greater care to save paper. A greener approach creates more business as an eco-friendly, caring culture and attitude is also communicated to customers and has a positive impact on gaining new business. In addition, being green can help the local economy. The green supplies industry is currently very embryonic and purchasing from green, eco-friendly companies helps to support these new industries. Without the support of committed customers, these new industries cannot create the markets that allow the development of alternative products and services. Benefits Recycling at work is a great way to increase your business sustainability. Once you start to recycle at work, youll experience the wide range of benefits that come with making your company a more sustainable and environmentally responsible organisation. Here are some of the benefits of recycling in the workplace: A Enhances company image - Engaging in greener business practices and publicising those practices can do wonders for your companys image and can attract both more effective employees and customers. B Recycling is easy to do - Recycling at work is straightforward and easy to do. Its easy to separate out materials to recycle from your other waste, if you get a good system in place, its easy to implement and maintain. C Recycling increases customer loyalty - Customers prefer to do business with companies that behave in an environmentally-friendly way. D Recycling saves space and can reduce clutter - Recycling often reduces clutter and improves the workplace. Less clutter also means better safety around your workplace. E Recycling is great for the environment - Recycling at work helps you reduce the environmental impact of your business. Recycling your waste materials means they can be used again in new products and applications, instead of simply going to landfill where they generate harmful greenhouse gas emissions. F Increases employee morale - Employee satisfaction is the best reason to undertake a recycling scheme. Employees find pride in working for a company that embodies environmental values and focuses attention on its environmental impact and responsibilities. G Recycling is cost effective - Recycling is a cost effective method of dealing with your waste, simply because it is often cheaper when compared with general waste management and disposal.

Questions 26 and 27
Read the Information Sheet Having a Successful Job Interview on the following page again. Use the information in the Information Sheet to match the statements (26 and 27) with the appropriate part of the interview. In boxes 26 and 27 on your answer sheet, write:
26

A B C

if the statement refers to advice before the interview. if the statement refers to advice during the interview. if the statement refers to advice after the interview.

Make sure you know exactly who is interviewing you and what her or his job is.

27 Make sure you know how much you will be paid for the job for which you are being interviewed.
General Training Test 12; Page 15 ieltshelpnow.com

Having a Successful Job Interview Before the Interview It is important to find out as much as possible about the company and the particular job being applied for. The type of information you should try to get hold of includes: Where are the companys headquarters located? What service it provides or what its product are? How many employees do they have? What is the companys recent profit history? Who is their main business market? Who are their main competitors? Make sure you know where the interview is being held and how to get there. Allow plenty of time for hold ups such as a traffic jam. Most people do not like to be kept waiting and it creates a bad impression if you do not turn up on time. If you are unavoidably late, try to telephone and let the company know that you will be late and why you have been delayed. Its important to pay attention to personal grooming since appearances do count. Dirty shoes, unkempt hair and grubby clothes can create an unfavourable first impression which is difficult to overcome. Be sure you know the name of the person you are about to see and his/her position in the organisation. During the Interview If you have the experience and ability to do the job, you must not let your interview let you down. Even if all the candidates could do the job equally well, some of them will give the impression that they will be unsuitable. What impression you wish to give is up to yourself. Contrary to what you might think, most interviewers are not trying to trip you up or trap you. He or she merely wishes to be convinced that you are the person for the job. It is up to you to put your abilities, experience and achievements over in a positive way to the interviewer and to convince him/her that you are the most suitable candidate for the job. Remember: do not swear even mildly, do not interrupt the interviewer, do not interview the interviewer, do not argue with the interviewer, and dont forget to smile. Do ask about the job. Intelligent questions about the job not only make a good impression, but can provide you with information you need to help you decide whether the post is an appropriate one for you. You can ask about: promotion prospects, training and further education, wages/salary/hours for the position, is a pension scheme available, how performance in the job is assessed, are staff often transferred to other branches, who would you be working with, who would you report to, what are the main challenges in the job. At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer(s) and leave confidently. Do not overstay your welcome. After the Interview At the end of the interview, you may not be told whether you have got the job. Other candidates may still have to be interviewed or other people in the firm may have to be consulted before making a final decision. However well the interview went, do not assume that the job is yours until you have an offer in writing. You should continue with your job search until you receive a firm offer. If you have not heard from the employer within a fortnight, it is reasonable to contact the company to find out the position. If you are offered the job, immediately confirm in writing that you accept. Remember, it is not the end of the world if you are unsuccessful. Look on it as a positive learning experience, since the more interviews you go to, the better your performance will become. Try to be objective; analyse what went wrong and learn by your mistakes.

SECTION 3 Questions 28 - 40
Read the following passage and answer Questions 28 40. Bondi Beach The Australian Swimming Paradise
A There is clear evidence - in the form of significant Aboriginal rock carvings in particular that Aboriginal people occupied sites in the area now known as Bondi in the period before European settlement. An important type of tool was first found in the region and is still known as the Bondi point. The indigenous people of the area at the time of European settlement have generally been referred to as the Eora. A number of place names within the area of Bondi are based on words derived from Aboriginal languages of the Sydney region. B Between 1855 and 1877, the land surrounding the beach and the beach itself became available to the public as a picnic ground and amusement resort, which caused friction between landowners there and leisure visitors. It was not until June 9, 1882, that the Government acted and Bondi Beach finally became a public beach. With the first visitors came the services to cater to them. Places selling food and drink along with places to sleep sprung up. With these came the pollution litter, sewage and other junk that you would expect when large numbers of people congregate, and these problems caused further problems with the people who owned the affected land. C In 1884, the first tramway linked the city of Sydney to the beach. Bondi Council built the first surf bathing sheds in about 1903 and by 1929 an average of 60,000 people were visiting the beach on a summer weekend day. The opening of the pavilion in 1929 attracted an estimated crowd of up to 200 000. By the 1930s Bondi was drawing not only local visitors, but also people from elsewhere in Australia and overseas. Advertising at the time referred to Bondi Beach as the Playground of the Pacific. More recently, Bondi Beach hosted the beach volleyball competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics. A temporary 10,000-seat stadium, a much smaller stadium, 2 warm-up courts, and 3 training courts were set up to host the tournament. In addition to many other activities, the Bondi Beach Market is open every Sunday. D Australia has become the worlds most powerful force in surfing and Bondi is one of Australias most famous surf beaches. A land once ruled by its aboriginal population and seen as a haven for criminals and pirates, the continent is perfectly suited for wave riding as its location places it square in the path of the planets most powerful and consistent surf energy. Along with the digger and the bushman, the surf lifesaver holds a revered place in Australias cultural imagery. The lifesaver grew to become an accepted feature of the beach and a symbol of what was seen to be good about being Australian. E The increasing popularity of sea bathing during the late 1800s and early 1900s raised
General Training Test 12; Page 17 ieltshelpnow.com

concerns about public safety and how to prevent people from drowning. In response, the worlds first formally documented surf lifesaving club, the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club, was formed in 1907. Surf patrol members wearing their distinctive red and yellow quartered caps first appeared at Bondi that summer. From Bondi, the surf lifesaving movement spread initially through New South Wales and then to the rest of Australia and the world. With the reassuring presence of surf lifesavers on duty, beaches became places of exhilarating swimming and surfing rather than potential tragedy. Today, Surf Life Saving Australia is one of the largest and most successful nationwide associations of volunteers dedicated to protecting the safety of beach goers. Surf lifesavers have rescued over 520,000 people in the 80 years since records have been kept. F Lifeguards are the boys in blue caps on Bondi Beach who patrol 365 days a year. The 35 Lifeguards are paid professionals employed by Bondi Council. They have ultimate responsibility for beach safety on Bondi and perform the majority of rescues. Bondis volunteer Lifesavers wear the traditional red and yellow caps. The Surf Life Saving Association volunteers patrol on weekends and public holidays during the summer months. Both services have long and proud traditions, with many Lifeguards coming up through the ranks of local surf clubs. G Since 1937, not one person has died from a shark attack at Bondi. However, there are still regular shark sightings at Bondi. Swimmers are alerted to the presence of sharks when they are detected, but the first line of defense for many decades has been shark nets. Shark nets are simply a straight, rectangular piece of net suspended in the water between buoys. They are anchored at either end, usually about 200 metres from shore, in about 10 metres of water. Most shark nets stretch about 200 metres along the beach and down to a depth of 6 metres. Floats at the top and sinkers at the bottom keep the net upright in the water. The mesh holes are 50cm wide; small enough to entangle sharks, and other large marine species, but big enough to leave smaller fish alone. The nets, however, are not intended to form a complete barrier, and sharks can still get through. The nets act as a deterrent by interrupting the territorial swimming patterns of sharks. In a typical 20km stretch of coastal surf beach, a strip of net will be set up every couple of kilometres along the beach.
