VISION OF
When the federal government implemented hazardous waste transportation regulations in the mid-1970s, the late Olen McCutcheon the cofounder of McCutcheon Enterprises Inc., one of Pennsylvanias largest industrial cleaning and emergency response companies and his son, Calvin, knew exactly what to do: become certied hazardous waste haulers.
McCutcheon Enterprises crew member Dave Dingey pumps out a pit on a job at a construction site. McCutcheon provides a wide range of services across a variety of industries.
In the mid-1990s, the duo saw a need for more efcient and powerful vacuum trucks to handle tough cleaning projects at steel mills and other industries. So they worked with GapVax Inc. ofcials to develop a high-ow vacuum truck that could vacuum up heavy industrial waste over long distances, then simultaneously pump it out into transportation equipment (such as tanker trailers and roll-off boxes) for disposal. Then the company, headquartered in Apollo, became one of the rst customers to buy these specialized GapVax trucks. Facing more competition and waste disposal capacity questions My great-grandfather, in the late 1990s, as well as growing concerns over ever-escalating waste Maxwell, and grandfather, disposal fees and associated hauling Olen, started with an idea. expenses, McCutcheon Enterprises decided to build its own residual My father turned that waste treatment facility. In 2001, idea into a vision. the company opened what is now a 58,000-square-foot waste disposal Chad McCutcheon facility that can handle solid, semisolid and liquid wastes from many different industries, including oil and gas. My father [Calvin] and grandfather [Olen] were not risk averse, says Chad McCutcheon, a fourth-generation member of the company who serves as its communications manager. His brother, Nathan, oversees operations in Houston, Pa., as a member of the executive management team. My greatgrandfather, Maxwell, and grandfather, Olen, started with an idea. My father turned that idea into a vision.
Much of what Calvin envisioned when he bought the company from his father in 1989 has come to fruition. The company exemplies the power of business diversication, providing everything from the aforementioned services to septic tank pumping, roll-off container services, site remediation and a host of other environmental-related services. The company employs 125 people and owns a eet of 275 vehicles, including 21 vacuum trucks and nine vacuum tanker trailers that work across a variety of industries. Its a far cry from the lone truck Max and Olen started out with when they began pumping septic tanks and hauling waste from steel mills back in 1947. Clearly, it pays to be industry pioneers who consistently stay ahead of the curve on new trends. My grandfather and father saw what was happening, Chad says, pointing to the companys pivotal move to become certied hazardous waste haulers more than 30 years ago. Thats the point where the business really took off. They both saw that the new hazardous waste regulations would create a solid

base for a waste management business. No longer would companies be able to hire just anyone to transport their waste they saw a boom coming and they needed to be ready for it.
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT The development of the companys multimillion dollar waste treatment facility marked another signicant milestone in company history. The facility can treat and release up to 160,000 gallons of waste per day (or about 58 million gallons of waste per year) from its biosolids treatment area. The oil and gas reuse area can process up to 288,000 gallons per day (or around 105 million gallons per year). The waste-solidication area can process up to 500 tons of waste per day, Chad says. The facility offers many benets. First, it signicantly reduces waste transportation costs. Second, spending less time trucking waste to treatment facilities boosts productivity dramatically because the company can do more cleaning jobs per year. Third, the company created another revenue stream by opening the disposal facility to other contractors. And perhaps less tangible but equally important, customers nd it attractive to do business with a company that can handle all aspects of a job, from cleanup to waste disposal, Chad explains. We responded to clients needs, he says. Clients prefer to hire one company to manage waste, transport it and dispose of it. Its a cost-effective way to provide waste disposal solutions to our clients. Customers reduce their costs, compared to sending it to a facility thats farther away or to one in New York or Ohio and when they break down their costs, they can see the savings gained from hiring one contractor as opposed to multiple contractors. Our treatment facility is one of the biggest things that sets us apart from our competitors. The facility runs several different waste treatment processes. One process treats municipal and residual waste streams from sources such as municipal plants, residential clients, manufacturers and the energy and industrial sectors. It utilizes screening and degritting, chemical treatment, separation of solids and liquids, and lter pressing, which consists of a series of vertical plates that
14 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - JANUARY 2014
squeeze out solids. The resulting ltercakes then can be landlled, and the remaining liquids are further treated and discharged into a municipal sewer. The solidication process involves putting liquid and semiliquid materials into four armor-plated cement pits, where a solidifying agent is added. After the waste solidies, its suitable for landll disposal, Chad says. In 2010, the company expanded the facility to include treatment of production and owback water from gas and oil elds. State ofcials eventually barred permitted treatment facilities from discharging the resulting waste stream, so the company now treats production and owback water for reuse by gas and oil producers, who use it for hydraulic fracturing of shale rock formations. The company recently modied its solidication process to include waste reduction, which is a more efcient treatment method that yields less solid waste. In this process, waste passes through a rotary lter press, where plates simultaneously rotate and compress to separate liquids and solids. The liquids are sent to another processing area for further treatment, while solids are landlled. That way, customers pay only for the solids that come in with the waste and not for the solids we add to it, Chad explains. Moreover, this means we transport less waste to the landll, and we dont have to add solidifying agents. Its a win-win.
NEW EQUIPMENT BOOSTS EFFICIENCY McCutcheon Enterprises rmly believes in investing in new equipment that can increase productivity and better serve customers. A good example is the companys recent purchase of three customized vacuum trucks, made by ITI Trailers & Truck Bodies Inc., which can quickly load drilling cuttings from gas and oil wells. The company also owns ve GapVax high-ow vacuum
trucks (built on two Peterbilt, two Mack and one Volvo chassis and equipped with 5,200 cfm blowers) that also work throughout various industrial and energy sectors. The ITI trucks, built on 2012 Peterbilt 367 chassis and equipped with lowemission, fuel-efcient diesel engines made by PACCAR, feature 4,200-gallon stainless steel tanks, a hydraulic hoist for efcient waste dumping through a full-opening rear door and a 921 cfm blower made by National Vacuum Equipment Inc.
I dont see a limit at this point. Weve been around for more than 60 years, my brother and I are going to be around for some time to come, and Dad has no plans to quit anytime soon, either.
Chad McCutcheon
The powerful units enable the company to use just one truck on congested drilling pads instead of the two it required before (one to vacuum up the cuttings and blow them into roll-off boxes, and another truck to take away the boxes). That, in turn, leaves more equipment and employees to serve other clients. Moreover, because of the way the trucks are designed, they weigh less than conventional high-ow vacuum trucks, which allows them to carry larger payloads and make fewer trips. The company owns many other pieces of equipment and vehicles, including: another ITI vacuum truck, this one built on a Peterbilt chassis with

MORE GROWTH AHEAD Future growth remains in the companys plans, as evidenced by the acquisition in April 2013 of Myzak Hydraulics, a company that rents and sells equipment to operators in the Marcellus Shale play. The company also offers roustabout services and containment liners for well pads. The main reason we acquired Myzak was for their connection to other oil and gas rms in southwestern Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, Chad explains. The acquisition gives us a bigger footprint in those areas. Along with renting equipment and machines, they also treat drilling muds and cuttings at the well sites solidify them and send them to landlls, he continues. Theyre called backyard services, and we need to have that mobile capability to provide even more versatility for our clients. Were really excited about it. When does the diversication stop? I dont see a limit at this point, Chad concludes. Weve been around for more than 60 years, my brother and I are going to be around for some time to come, and Dad has no plans to quit anytime soon, either. And well keep adhering to Dads philosophy of people, performance and progress that the best people perform the best work which leads to continual progress and growth. So really, the skys the limit. New eet of equipment helps Georgia excavation rm break fresh ground in natural gas shale play
By Ken Wysocky
DeKalb Pipeline Co. jumped in to the gas and oil market with a fleet of brand new John Deere excavators, loaders and bulldozers.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
hen opportunity knocks for support services contractors in the gas and oil elds, its best to answer the door quickly. James King Jr., the president and chief executive ofcer of DeKalb Pipeline Co., knows the drill. In just ve weeks after the Conyers, Ga.-based company received a chance to enter a new market, King purchased a small eet of new John Deere equipment thats now hard at work, helping crews lay pipelines that supply water for hydraulic fracturing operations in the Utica natural gas shale play in southeastern Ohio.
From 600 miles away in Atlanta, I can look and see things such as production statistics, idle time, fuel consumption, running time and service notications.
James King Jr.
Mobilizing 21 pieces of brand new equipment and getting them up and working in such a short time span was no small feat. In all, the company spent nearly $5 million on 12 track excavators (one 180G, one 210G, six 250Gs, two 290Gs and two 350Gs), ve wheel loaders (two 624K, two 644Ks and one 544J) and four 850K bulldozers, King says. We had a very short window to plug into and we needed a lot of equipment that had to be congured in ways that werent readily available, he notes, crediting John Deere representatives for quickly assembling all the required equipment. John Deere orchestrated the sourcing of all the equipment through several different dealers and got the machines set up the way we needed them.
20 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - JANUARY 2014
Customizations included outtting the excavators with single-bar grouser pads for added traction in the Utica plays rugged, hilly terrain; equipping the wheel loaders with skidder tires, also for better traction; and adding winches to the bulldozers so they can pull pipe segments, King says. Until several months ago, DeKalb Pipelines primary market was grading and excavating work for residential water and sewer line installations in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Then a gas exploration company approached DeKalb about doing similar work in Ohio, laying 24-inch-diameter, high density polyethylene pipes (HDPP) that transport water to drill pads for fracking operations. The pipes come in 50-foot lengths, and DeKalb crews fuse them into 300-foot-long segments, then drag them into place in a shared right-of-way with other pipelines, King says. The gas companies have determined that theyre using 1.5 million gallons of water per frac over an 18-hour period, King explains. They were bringing it in by tankers and storing it in tanks. But theyve now determined that they can save about $600,000 per frac if they bring in water through a pipeline instead of trucking it in with tankers. So far, the John Deere machines have proven to be real workhorses. King enthusiastically endorses the JD Link machine monitoring systems installed on
the equipment. They provide remote access to information about the eets location, utilization levels and a wide array of diagnostic data. From 600 miles away in Atlanta, I can look and see things such as production statistics, idle time, fuel consumption, running time and service notications, King says. Its very useful information. For instance, reports showed that during the rst month in Ohio, our machines were idling 33 percent of the time. Im a real stickler about productivity every hour that machine is running costs money in terms of things like ownership depreciation, maintenance costs
front and rear tires, youve got all four tires truly pulling without any of them slipping. Thats a great benet in the terrain where we work. Overall, King says he is very pleased with not only the machines, but with the John Deere dealer support. We went from almost nothing to 21 machines on site in about 40 days, he says. It was very important to us to get the equipment on site within that short time frame because this was a very signicant move for us into a new market. Now weve overcome all the initial mobilization hurdles and so far, these machines have been a great investment. GOMC
A DeKalb Pipeline Co. equipment operator pulls a section of new pipe into position with a John Deere bulldozer.
and fuel expenses, he continues. So its critical to minimize running time. We made a correction, and the next report showed an 8 percent drop in idle time. So we trimmed 24 percent of that cost. King also lauds the machines user-friendly operations, and productivity enhancers like a system on the excavators that delivers more crowd force when sensors detect resistance while digging. And on one of the 350G excavators, we added a JRB [a brand owned by Palladin Heavy Construction] coupler that allows us to easily add a hydraulic hammer attachment to break up and remove large rocks uncovered during excavating, King says. In addition, King appreciates the sheer power of the 850K dozers. Were pulling those 300-foot pipe segments in with winches, almost like log skidders, in some pretty difcult terrain, he explains. The pipe segments weigh about 90 pounds per foot, so thats 27,000 pounds. But its no problem for these dozers brute strength. King also cites the differential-lock systems on the wheel loaders as key productivity enhancers because they signicantly increase traction under slippery conditions. When the differential locks lock up the

Beginning with only six employees at its founding in 2010, Summit now employs 165 people working the oilelds on the western edges of North Dakota. The company specializes in oileld services such as road building, pad and ow line construction, storage tank fabrication and site reclamation. The company implemented Ford Crew Chief Powered by Telogis as a way of managing factors such as truck idling, asset utilization and ensuring the safety of its workforce, and has noticed additional benets in the process, including simplied reporting and a new way of working with its dealer service department to ensure optimal eet performance. UNDERSTANDING TELEMATICS Summits eet includes approximately 100 vehicles that range in size from Ford F-150 pickup trucks to large atbed semi trailers. Many telematics systems will work with numerous truck brands in this way. Ford Crew Chief, for instance, is offered by Ford but is compatible with other manufacturers Summit has the system outtted on a number of Dodge and Kenworth trucks as well. The system is anchored by a black box wired into the truck that collects and transmits data back to a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) program that selected

The company has also extended access to its Ford dealer service department.

The advantage of this SaaS program is that it can be accessed with any internet-enabled device. The user can log in on any computer, tablet or smartphone and does not have to worry about installing any software or maintaining new computer systems and, in many cases, the software is automatically updated with the newest available features automatically by the provider. ENGINE IDLING SAPS FUEL EFFICIENCY Engine idling is a hot point in eet management circles because it drives up fuel consumption and adds unnecessary hours to the trucks engine. (continued)

The telematics system identies engine idling and alerts management, allowing them to work with the drivers and educate them on ways to reduce idling. The frigid cold temperatures of North Dakota in winter require a certain amount of idling to properly warm engines and protect employees from the elements, but the company has still been able to reduce engine idling by 75 percent just through identifying causes of the issue and working with drivers to curtail that behavior. Itll send an email alert to me if a vehicle is idling longer than 15 minutes, Edwards says. We caught quite a few in the beginning and now its very rare that I get an email that a vehicle is idling. PROPER ASSET UTILIZATION DRIVES INTELLIGENT BUSINESS One of the primary reasons Summit uses the telematics system is to determine the proper allocation and utilization of its eet. This ranges from ensuring the right people are in the right location, to determining when new trucks need to be purchased to keep up with demand. It gives management realtime visibility into the location of people and vehicles and helps ensure that the
Any one truck can cost us a job, and one job can cost us our reputation with a particular company, Edwards says. In the long run that costs a lot of money. Chief Operating Ofcer Will Reedy takes it one step further, and notes that the ability to identify an underutilized asset and move it to a division where it is needed versus buying a new truck makes a signicant step towards justifying ROI. Were doing a lot of time-and-materials contracts with oil companies, and every day your eet is not aligned with your work its not making money, Reedy says. Having a right-size eet, knowing that all the units that we have are being used to come in with real information that [details utilization by each crew], it allows you to be objective because you have good information to make those decisions. You really only have to make one bad decision and buy an extra F-450 for $50,000 to tip the scales in the wrong direction. Used correctly, keeping a close eye on how these trucks are utilized can also play a signicant role in asset life extension. Summit plans to more closely monitor mileage with the system. Were going to try and rotate vehicles so that the vehicles with lesser miles take the longer trips, and well keep the trucks with higher mileages closer to town, Edwards says.
NEW AMERICAN FRONTIER PRESENTS SAFETY CHALLENGES Ford Crew Chief Powered by Telogis Another primary reason companies implement telematics has allowed Summit Energy Services solutions is for safety, and thats twofold: always knowing exactly to more effectively schedule and prepare for trucks to come in for repair. where your crew is, and identifying driving behaviors that could be dangerous to your employees and your vehicles. Were extremely isolated in some areas, Edwards says. You can break down in the middle of nowhere with no phone reception and be stuck there. With the winters we have in North Dakota, thats pretty dangerous. Now youve got a way to nd somebody if a vehicle hasnt moved in a certain amount of time you can go look for them and nd out exactly where theyre at. Driving-related accidents are one of the leading causes of injury and death in the workplace. Accidents also lead to downtime for employees and trucks, possible vehicle replacement costs and increased insurance premiums. Curbing behaviors that lead to accidents, such as closest personnel available to respond to immediate needs are properly routed, excessive speeding, hard braking and hard acceleration help reduce the likelihood rather than sending someone else out from headquarters ultimately saving time of accidents. Summit regularly posts a scorecard of driver safety metrics to foster a and resources. sense of competition and pride among its drivers. The result has been an 80 to 90 It seems to help our superintendents quite a bit, Edwards says. They percent reduction in driver safety alerts since the system was implemented. That can actually see where their guys are, and coordinate and distribute it, whereas helps save costs and also helps protect Summits image with the community. in the past we were relying on cellphones and calling back and forth where We want to make sure everyone goes home at night, and everyone sees you at, where you at? One glance at [the software display] and you know our emblem on the side of our trucks, Edwards says. Every vehicle represents where theyre at. Summit, so its important. One recent example involved a maintenance problem with a truck. Summit was able to route a nearby maintenance crew rather than sending out SUMMIT PARTNERS WITH another team from headquarters. DEALER FOR SERVICE PROGRAM My maintenance guy was coming back from the eld, someone else One of the unique keystones of Summits telematics program is that they called in and said they needed help, Edwards says. I was able to stop him have partnered with their primary Ford dealer, Select Ford of Williston, to share and turn him around. I knew he was close he was within a mile. Whereas maintenance-related data on its entire eet. This allows the service department to otherwise we would have had to send someone from the shop here, and that see in real time the same alerts Summit sees as it relates to vehicle maintenance, saved us a bunch of time and money. which includes everything from vehicle diagnostic codes to tire pressure and The system also aids in identifying underutilized vehicles and moving percentage of engine oil life remaining. them to divisions within the company where they may be needed. One alert Select is able to more effectively schedule and prepare for the truck to come that Edwards has programmed lets him know if a truck sits without being in for repair as it can see exactly what is wrong on the computer screen while the started for more than two days. This makes him aware of a possible asset that truck is still out in the eld. It then immediately schedules the truck for repair could be used somewhere else in the company.

an immediacy that is appreciated in a boomtown with too many trucks and not enough mechanics. Ed Steckler, owner and general manager of Select Ford of Williston, says the earlier he knows about a truck needing service, the earlier he can get it in. In the purest state, if you still had a rst-come, rst-served service department, the rst one in gets served rst. And with all the demand here we have to have a little bit of that, Steckler says. With Summit it allows us to treat them a little more special. A lot of it has to do with information. ADDITIONAL BENEFITS DRIVE IMPROVEMENT Ford Crew Chief has also helped Summit better report on mileage and fuel used between North Dakota and Montana. As each state has different taxes for fuel purchased and used on their state roads, the system allows Summit to identify exactly how much mileage and fuel was used on which roads, and can export that data into a concise report. Thats wonderful for the semis in our eet, Edwards says. Those have apportioned plates and [adhere to the] International Fuel Tax Agreement. So we pay taxes for every mile we drive on whatever states road, and whatever fuel that is purchased in each state. Telogis has a report that will print out for me that tells me what state they drove in and for however many miles, and I just hand that over and its done in a couple of minutes, compared to before where everyone wrote it down and tried to remember what state they were in.
All of these benets add up to provide efciencies that help to better organize and manage a decentralized eet of vehicles. When looked at wholly, the system provides net gains in productivity, utilization, safety and performance that positively affect the bottom line and help Summit manage its business in a booming work environment. We continue to invest in new vehicles, and especially if youve got a workforce spread out over a large geographic area that youre not going to be able to touch every day, its got some big value, Reedy says. Were putting it in all future trucks its the right decision for us. GOMC
We want to make sure everyone goes home at night, and everyone sees our emblem on the side of our trucks. Every vehicle represents Summit, so its important.

The system also allows Edwards to switch back and forth between a standard map view and satellite imagery. This has helped in instances where they are navigating crews to a pad that may require additional direction beyond what is available on the standard map. You can identify particular buildings and tell them what to look for when giving directions, and how a road curves in, Edwards says. The satellite view actually shows the layout of how a pad was built. It also helps improve customer service by providing irrefutable detail of a trucks movements and actions throughout the day. If a customer has a question on a ticket Did your guy work 10 hours?, we can say Yes, he worked 10 hours, this is when he left the shop, this is when he arrived on location and how long he was there, and heres when he returned to the shop.

o, youre attending the 2014 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International in late February, youve arrived a few days early and are looking for something to do, right? You dont have to go too far if youre an NFL fan. Just look to Lucas Oil Stadium where the 2014 NFL Combine will be taking place the combine and the Pumper & Cleaner Expo overlap by two days.
Itll be the third straight year the NFL will be distributing tickets for the scouting combine that is held each February in Indianapolis and draws the best college athletes hoping to make it onto an NFL roster. In 2012, the NFL opened the scouting combine to 250 and demand was so high that the NFL increased the number of tickets available to 600 and fans could be allowed in for two days instead of just one. This year, NFL ofcials are saying more tickets could be available. Those tickets would either be sold via a ticket outlet such as Ticketmaster or, as done in the past, fans would need to write an essay saying why they deserved the ticket. Those plans werent nalized by deadline, according to Corry Rush, AFC Football Communications Director. The NFL is looking for real, die-hard fans to be a part of this opportunity, says Rush. Fans getting tickets will get a chance to see some of the top draft prospects Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater; South Carolina
defensive end Jadeveon Clowney; Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews; and UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr. Its the ultimate job interview, says Indianapolis Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson. Fans could watch the 40-yard dash for quarterbacks, wide receivers, offensive linemen and tight ends, and position skill drills. The NFL Scouting Combine has been growing in popularity over the last several years. In 2012, more than 6.5 million people watched on the NFL Network and ESPN. Last year, more than 7 million watched. There arent too many outdoor activities centered around the NFL Combine, but if youre attending the Pumper & Cleaner Expo and book your hotel room early, you have a chance to stay in the expos host hotel the JW Marriott which is also the host hotel for the NFL Scouting Combine. Fans will see coaches, general managers and college athletes walking around the hotel, through the convention center and around that area of Indianapolis, Rush says. The NFL Combine will be held from Feb. 18-25 this year, while the rst day of the Pumper & Cleaner Expo is Monday, Feb. 24 with Education Day. The Expo will return to the Indiana Convention Center connected to the JW Marriott Feb. 24-27, 2014, again showing off the latest products and technologies in the environmental services industry. Early registration costs just $50 until Jan. 24. At-the-door registration is $70 for the full program. To nd out more, visit www.pumpershow.com or call 866/9332653. GOMC

The dream step allows you to communicate a shared vision that others can be inspired to contribute toward, and invite them to dialogue. 4. Design. This is the inventory process by which you take note of all the planning and priorities that would work well in the future. Again, the key here is to continue to be solutions-focused and thus future-focused, and to allow the dream and visioning process to quickly roll over into asking yourself and others, What might that look like? 5. Deliver. This is where the rubber meets the road and all that hard work of the previous steps comes together. This step is about the execution of the proposed design through shared governance and inclusion. The principles of Appreciative Inquiry are based on the idea that when you build upon your strengths rather
ver had more work than you had time? Ever felt that with ever decreasing budgets and no ability to hire new help that the demands of your organization exceed its capabilities? How to solve the common challenges that organizations face is of course to logically focus on the things that arent working in your organization, and try to gure out how to x them. The conventional problem-solving tools of deductive reasoning have continued to produce similar outcomes from one business to the next. What we focus on, however, we often create more of meaning that if we are only able to see whats broken in our workplace, we may never nd whats working. This is where a technique in organizational development called Appreciate Inquiry may come to your aide. Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a model of organizational development that asks leaders to shift to a positive perspective by examining the things that an organization does well and thereby leveraging its innate strengths to outweigh its limitations whether they be budgetary or otherwise. The AI approach was born out of the research of Case Western Reserve University whereupon leaders recognize and value the contributions of things and people around them (appreciation), and then explore, discover and understand more about these possibilities (inquiry). This is done in what is called the Five D approach, which is as follows:
productivity with fewer staff? it would be How do we accelerate the productivity of our existing staff? The phrasing of a focus is critical to what answers come in the subsequent steps of an appreciative inquiry. Remember, seek and you shall nd. 2. Discover. Identify the organizational processes that work well. This can be done by making daily rounds face to face with team members and organizational units to both establish rapport but namely to probe deeply into what makes their jobs easier or

to nd what solutions theyve developed to address some of their common challenges. Through the process of discovery you are able to not only have greater understanding with your employees, but also to identify potential issues before they become a problem. Through AI you empower your team members to have greater access to you as a leader, and they empower you to discover what works. 3. Dream. Envisioning the future can become what science often calls a strange attractor. This is about the ability to clearly identify where youre going and share that vision with others routinely either through your repeat discovery procedures, or than focusing upon your weaknesses, you create empowered solutions that become like a happy virus infecting all those around you. Then suddenly, when people come knocking on your door with a problem, they know to come with some ideas and solutions in hand that can be easily implemented to leverage their own strengths toward greater success. The key to implementation of appreciate inquiry is through communicating the AI philosophy to all members of the team. Many organizations have what is called an Appreciative Inquiry Summit where key stakeholders and leaders of an organization are brought together to dig deep into whats really right about their organization, and to

ask themselves how they might be able to envision that growing larger and being more emphasized. In a small drain cleaning operation, you might sit down with your whole staff and discuss the companys strengths. The old and outdated approach of identifying problems, analyzing causes and possible solutions, and then activating treatments based on those possible solutions is only a three dimensional approach. arking my fth Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International in February, I still remember my rst show, walking into the vastness of the exhibit hall when I couldnt tell a vacuum truck from a portable restroom. (Dont worry, I gured it out pretty quickly.) The Expo can feel overwhelming for rst-time attendees, but the experience and knowledge gained are well worth the time and money spent. Ive been lucky enough to meet many of you because part of my job involves interviewing attendees, seminar leaders and exhibitors for videos. Youve probably seen me with a camera guy wandering around the show oor. Were the video crew, and we create videos and post them on the Expo website (www. pumpershow.com), to our Facebook pages and on exhibitor websites. And Ive also learned a lot from you during my years at the Expo, which runs this year from Feb. 24-27 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind. Now its my turn to pass along some helpful tips to make your show more enjoyable. on the Expo website will help you plan each day so you dont miss anything. The oor plan offers a quick and easy way to nd exhibits and products. A graphic layout shows where each company is exhibiting and provides booth number, website, and phone number and address. Look up companies and products with the Search the Show option in the upper left-hand corner of the oor plan page. For example, a search for Pipeline Rehabilitation/Lining will highlight all the exhibits on the oor plan that have those products. You can also create a show planner to save personal information, company and product information, and keep a schedule of educational seminars. The mobile website on your smartphone is another helpful tool for planning your time at the Expo. You can search exhibitors to quickly nd booth numbers, click the calendar icon to see educational seminar schedules and locations, or use the map of Indianapolis to nd local restaurants. Sign up for Facebook and Twitter updates on the mobile site to stay informed on everything happening at the show. DAILY DOSE Ensure you have the most current seminar schedules and company list with the complimentary Expo Daily, the ofcial daily publication of the Pumper & Cleaner Expo.

GROUND SENSE SYSTEM The 672C Garnet Posiground from Armstrong Equipment is a ground sense system that veries trucks are properly grounded during uid transfer while onsite. Grounding is achieved by securing two clamps to grounded metal objects at least 20 feet apart. In the event a ground is lost, it has the ability to activate a horn, and after a set amount of time it can shut down the transfer of uid until a ground is relocated. The control system determines the operational status of the system by identifying whether there is proper grounding. It also assists in troubleshooting in case of a system malfunction. The spring loaded grounding reel assists the operator to disburse and retract the ground cable and clamps to the required length. 800/699-7557; www.vacpump.com. ANTI-SPRAY FENDERS Spray Mate fenders from Fleet Engineers Inc. are made from injected-molded polypropylene, and are lightweight, high density, rust- and corrosion-resistant and available in 10 colors. They are easy to care for, require no painting or polishing, and are unaffected by extreme heat or cold ranging from -40 to 130 degrees F. The side valances and molded ribs on the underside are designed to provide spray suppression and keep equipment cleaner. The curved brush signicantly reduces spray to improve visibility for both the driver and other motorists, yet allows air to ow through the exible lament skirting, and helps prevent objects such as stones from damaging the nish, breaking mirrors and shattering windows. Bulk kits include two fenders, support package sets, and support-to-fender and support-to-bracket stainless steel mounting hardware. 800/333-7890; www.eetengineers.com. BUMPER CRANE The SR5T/6T series bumper crane from Sto-Away Power Cranes can lift 2,000 pounds of payload. When equipped with a boom extension that can lift 500 pounds of payload, has a 10-foot ground clearance and reaches out to 6 1/2 feet. The way the crane folds away into the bumper allows it to be used in mining applications. A nitrogen cylinder assist allows it to have safe and predictable storing, and also saves the worker from back injuries. The crane bolts to most 77- to 102-inch standard bumpers. 800/622-9797; www.stoaway.com. Based in Alvin, Texas, K-3BMI reects a merger of two separate businesses: K-3 Services, a diversied oileld services company focusing on uid transport; and BMI, a municipal biosolids management contractor. With more than 120 trucks, Ercums says K-3BMIs prime focus is on the transportation of uids to and from drilling and completion sites in the Eagle Ford Shale in south-central Texas to the Haynesville Shale in northeast Texas/northwest Louisiana. His trucks are also dispatched on longer trips, hauling specialty drilling uids and chemicals to gas and oilelds from Pennsylvania and North Dakota to Colorado and California. SWITCHING TO ALUMINUM One of the most distinctive characteristics of the K-3BMI eet is the reliance on 166-barrel aluminum vacuum tank trailers in addition to the 130-barrel carbon steel vacuum transports that have long been the standard in the oil and gas elds. Ercums became interested in using larger, lighter aluminum tanks soon after he moved into oileld services. Back in 1986, everybody was using carbon steel 130-barrel trailers and I K-3BMI has its fabricators mount Gardner Denver Demag Wittig RFL 100 pumps with hydraulic drives thought we could be more competitive with aluminum. behind the landing gear on its vacuum trailers to help shield them from road hazards. But he loaded 8,400 and it cracked. That using air-ride suspensions to better protect the trailers against bumpy oileld calamity didnt deter the young Ercums; it just sent him down a different road. Once trucks and trailers are delivered, K-3BMI continues to ne-tune before putting them into service. Mechanics mount Gardner Denver Demag Wittig RFL 100 pumps behind the landing gear of the vacuum trailers, a spot where they are more protected from road dirt and debris. Its an expensive pump, but its bullet-proof, Ercums says. K-3BMI opts for hydraulic drives on the pumps because they run cleaner and have less downtime compared to pumps running off of drive shafts.

K-3s employees assemble the hydraulic systems in-house based on a design perfected over the years. To help protect the pumps and cabs, fabricators modify quarter fenders to mount over the trucks drive tires. Before new equipment is put on the road, drivers are trained on proper operation. Because of the emissions on the new trucks, it is extremely important that the drivers are trained on the trucks systems, Ercums says. Many were supervisors rst at other locations, but most of them jumped at the opportunity if I asked them to manage a new location. One benet of developing his managers, Ercums says, is their willingness to work as a team. He brings them together for quarterly meetings where they can discuss common issues and challenges, but he says they are also encouraged to maintain that teamwork when they go back to their individual ofces. The networking makes it possible for the company to efciently allocate resources both equipment and people where

Problem
In talking with the lead operator at one of the largest facilities on the North Slope, it was clear that all their facilities would endorse the purchase of an Adjustable Wrench with Valve Persuader designed and manufactured by Snap-on. This would not only eliminate the homemade tools, but also allow the company to install and operate using only OEM equipment and tools.
Solution
With input from the lead operators, design work by engineers at Snap-on, reviews and reworks of the prototype, the GADW10VLV was created. This is a 10-inch mouth-adjustable wrench with a 3/4-inch opening on the end of the handle in a black nish. This tool enhances operator safety and productivity greatly, and is widely used in Alaskas North Slope oilelds. 262/656-5337; www.snapon.com. GOMC

s it time for another truck? Whether your business is expanding or you simply need to replace an older piece of equipment, you can expect to spend a fair amount of time making your decision. That new asset is an important investment, and youll want to make sure you get one that meets all your needs. But once youve picked it out, your decisions arent over.
Dont snub the value that convenience offers you. At the same time, though, dont forget that you have other options. Financing through a dealer or manufacturer could be a bit more expensive. One reason is that in its eagerness to make a sale, the dealer- or manufacturer-afliated lender might be willing to take a bit more risk on the loan than a conventional bank and the riskier the lender thinks you are,
If youre buying a truck because you just received a new contract, and your current cash ow is ne for what you currently have, but adding on will stretch your cash, having some projections for what the new business is going to bring you is going to be important.
Bud Miller
Perhaps you have the resources to pay cash up front, but its more likely youll need to nance the purchase. And that means more choices. Will you take nancing from the dealer? Get a bank loan? Consider other options? Your course of action is anything but automatic and when youre preparing to take this step, you have to be deliberate about which choice will be best for you and your business. DEALING WITH THE DEALER Dealer nancing whether its part of a program from the manufacturer or is independent of the company making your new vehicle is probably the path of least resistance. Just being able to do one-stop shopping for a truck and loan together is likely to make it attractive.
44 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - JANUARY 2014
the more youre going to pay. If youre a strong candidate for a loan, however, you may do better going through that conventional bank. TAKING IT TO THE BANK For most businesses seeking a loan for some piece of heavy equipment a service truck, a combination truck or a jetter, perhaps it is just as easy to get it through bank nancing as it would be to go through your dealership, says Bud Miller, chief sales ofcer and senior VP for small business sales and distribution at TD Bank. Strong borrowers are very attractive to banks these days, Miller says. While the economy is still a bit feeble, the downturn winnowed out the weakest banks. The survivors are now ready to try to grow again, he says, and so the competition is very, very strong for strong borrowers.
THE 3 CS The key to a bank loan is to understand that your bankers top priority is making sure the bank gets its money back and prots from the deal. One easy way is to show them youre on top of all of the 3 Cs cash ow, credit history and collateral. You want to show the bank your business has a strong cash ow and that paying your loan on time will not strain your budget. That doesnt mean you have to present a formal business plan simply for a loan for one piece of equipment, but you will need to be sure your recent business tax returns are in order and easily show the condition of your business. In demonstrating that your cash ow can support the loan, youll want to look forward, not just backward. If this is replacement equipment, your job may be fairly easy: Just show how youve proted from the unit your new purchase will take the place of. If the new one has efciencies built in that could make it do more work in less time, make sure to show that, too, as concretely as you can. But what if your new asset will allow you to expand into a new geographic area or a new subspecialty in your work? Your task might be a bit tougher, but if youre making a realistic decision, you should be able to demonstrate it. Show the bank youve crunched the numbers and produce solid evidence for the increased business youre projecting. If youre buying a truck because you just received a new contract, and your current cash ow is ne for what you currently have, but adding on will stretch your cash, having some projections for what the new business is going to bring you is going to be important. GOOD CREDIT Youll also be asked for both a business credit report and, in all likelihood, a personal credit report. Paying your debts on time, as a business and as an individual, can make the difference down the road as
to how much it will cost you to borrow when you need to make that purchase. If you ran into a crunch sometime back and it shows up on your report business or personal be prepared to discuss what happened, Miller says. Another standard request will be for a copy of the invoice on the equipment youre buying. The bank will want to make sure its value is appropriate to what the individual is paying. After all, if you do default on the loan, the bank will be stuck with having to resell the item in order to recoup its losses. Thats the collateral. Most lending programs for vehicles and similar business assets are pretty straightforward. Miller notes, however, that there are some additional options for smaller companies through the federal Small Business Administration. SBA-backed loans can be especially helpful for newer companies that havent been around long enough to build a strong business track record. Essentially, the government agency helps guarantee the private banks loan, which can make the difference for some companies in their ability to borrow, or borrow at a better rate. From time to time, SBA has waived up-front fees on loans like that, so make sure to see if your bank is participating in such a program and what help it might offer you. SBA loans can also help if you want to put less money down, Miller says. A LEASE ON LIFE Still another option might be a lease. Leasing is likely to cost a bit more than a conventional loan, but Miller says it doesnt have to be signicantly more expensive perhaps a half a percent or 1 percent more. The big advantage to a lease is that it could allow you to buy the asset with no money down, he points out. Whatever decision you make, however, one thing will make the whole process a lot easier: a strong relationship with your bank going in. THE IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONSHIP Forming that relationship and nurturing it long before you actually have to seek a loan can do a lot for smoothing the application and approval process, Miller says. That way you have an ally and a supporter in the bank who can hear the unique story of your business and then relate it up the chain in their own organization to make the best case possible on your behalf. And when the time comes to buy that truck, you may nd that the choices are actually a whole lot less complicated than you feared. GOMC

pilot inexperienced with the plane, an airports glidescope out of service, problems with the automatic throttle, possible lack of proper supervision; take away any one of those suspected contributing factors and Asiana Flight 214 may not have crashed while landing at San Francisco International Airport in July. While still under investigation, the crash illustrates how accidents often have several causes, some possibly minor, that line up in just the right way to result in disaster. The pilot in control of Flight 214 was a skilled veteran, but undergoing his initial operating experience training on the Boeing 777. It was the rst time his instructor had lled the trainer role. The glidescope wasnt necessary due to the perfect weather during the landing, but would have shown they were too low. Its possible the pilots assumed the autothrottle was maintaining the proper speed, which it wasnt. The plane crashed just short of the runway, which wouldnt have happened if someone in the cockpit
had recognized they were going too low and too slow. Looking at the most frequently cited OSHA violations for scal 2012 (Oct. 1, 2011 to Sept. 30, 2012), one can see how a few things that happen together could lead to a serious safety event on the job site. 1. Fall protection, construction (29 CFR 1926.501) 2. Hazard communication standard, general industry (29 CFR 1910.1200) 3. Scaffolding, general requirements, construction (29 CFR 1926.451) 4. Respiratory protection, general industry (29 CFR 1910.134) 5. Control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout), general industry (29 CFR 1910.147) 6. Powered industrial trucks, general industry (29 CFR 1910.178) 7. Electrical, wiring methods, components and equipment, general industry (29 CFR 1910.305) 8. total worker deaths in 2011 nearly 90 weekly almost 13 every single day. Its no coincidence that the most cited violation was also the most common cause of the 4,188 deaths in the construction business in calendar year 2011, accounting for 35 percent of deaths in that industry, or that the rst seven deaths of 2013 were all related to falls all within the rst ve days of the year, including four in one day: Jan. 2 fall from a ladder. Jan. 3 10-foot fall through a oor of home under construction. Jan. 4 80-foot fall from a cellular tower. Jan. 4 20-foot fall down steps. Jan. 4 30-foot fall from equipment. Jan. 4 8-foot fall from a drilling machine when it hit rebar. Jan. 5 30-foot fall while doing maintenance work on a crane. The rest of what OSHA calls the Fatal Four for construction workers were: Electrocutions 69 (9 percent) Struck by object 73 (10 percent) Caught in/between 18 (2 percent) Eliminating those four, OSHA says, would save 419 lives a year more than one life every day. Have you looked at your most common safety violations? Do you regularly inspect the job site or monitor worker performance? Do you investigate close calls that could have resulted in injury or death? Eventually, such near misses will result in a recordable injury. According to OSHA, for every 600 recordable injuries, there will be about 30 life-changing injuries. And for every 30 life-changing injuries, there will be one fatality. So the more minor incidents you can prevent, the less likely one of your co-workers, or you, will lose their life on the job. GOMC
