Barack Obama Democratic Club

of Upper Manhattan
The Barack Obama Democratic Club is the newest political club in New
York City—and the first in the nation named for our new president. We are
an independent, multi-ethnic force for progressive politics in the uptown
neighborhoods of Washington Heights, West/Harlem Hamilton Heights,
and Inwood. We are working to assure our community’s voice is heard on
the local, city, state, and national level. Join us in this exciting new
endeavor…and have an impact where it matters.

We are supporting the following Democrats in the upcoming 2009 NYC Primary election:

For Mayor: Bill Thompson www.thompson2009.com


Bill is a former President of the Board of Education, and has served as NYC Comptroller since 2002. He has a
record of going after waste in City government, has invested millions of dollars in affordable housing, and is
advocating an agenda to support New York’s working class and middle class residents.

For Comptroller: John Liu www.liunewyork.com


John has represented Flushing, Queens in the City Council since 2002. As chair of the Council’s Transportation
Committee he has been a strong advocate for mass transit. He is the son of immigrants and had a successful
career in banking and finance before entering public service.

For Public Advocate: Bill de Blasio www.billdeblasio.com


Bill has represented Park Slope, Brooklyn, since 2002. He chairs the Council’s General Welfare committee,
where he has worked to reform the child welfare system and has written legislation to protect domestic violence
survivors. He is also a former school board member who has prioritized education.

For Manhattan District Attorney: Richard Aborn www.abornforda.com


Richard is a national leader in the fight against gun violence and a former Asst. DA in Manhattan. He is Chair of
the Citizen’s Commission on Crime, and has articulated a progressive agenda for stopping crime in Manhattan
before it happens.

For City Council (District 7): Robert Jackson


Robert is a lifelong education advocate who championed the landmark lawsuit to win fair funding for NYC
schools. As chair of the Council’s Education Committee he has been a strong voice for parental involvement in
the schools, additional school construction uptown, greater checks and balances on DOE, and more.

For City Council (District 10): Ydanis Rodriguez


For nearly 20 years Ydanis has been a progressive activist in northern Manhattan. He has been a leader on
immigration rights, housing issues, and public education. He has run his campaign around the ideals of
honesty and integrity, and has earned the support of the labor movement and nearly all local elected officials.

Mark has been a leader and activist uptown for over a decade, tackling critical issues like affordable housing,
education, public safety, parks, and mass transit. Most recently he founded the Barack Obama Democratic Club
of Upper Manhattan to help enhance our community’s voice in local politics.

For Democratic District Leader (71st AD part A - Female): Maria Luna


Maria Luna has a nearly 30-year record of activism in the Democratic Party, including being the first Dominican
woman elected as District Leader in New York City. She is also Chair of the Executive Committee of the NY
County Democratic Committee, and is a member of the DNC.
