Polyon: Controlled-Release Fertilizer

Nothing Else Comes Close To POLYON Fertilizer.

What makes one fertilizer better than another? In the case of POLYON Controlled-Release Fertilizer (CRF) from Agrium Advanced Technologies, the answer includes several things. With its many exclusive features and benefitsfrom special manufacturing and coating to extensive testing, to its unique release propertiesPOLYON fertilizer clearly offers you more especially in the exceptional results it delivers for your nursery operation. The advanced concept behind POLYON fertilizer is a patented process known as Reactive Layers Coating (RLC). RLC is a breakthrough technology in which an ultrathin, ultra-tough polyurethane membrane is formed from two monomers, right on the surface of the fertilizer being coated. Because the coating is thin, yet durable, POLYON fertilizer has controlled-release properties that can be programmed to suit the environmental and growing conditions in your given area. It is this high level of predictability that makes Agrium Advanced Technologies the leader in the field of coated-fertilizer technologies. In fact, Agriums research staff tests POLYON nutrientrelease characteristics at various temperature extremes, including our 86 F test to ensure our products stand up to the rigors of warm, humid climates.

The POLYON Coating Technology

How POLYON Fertilizer Is MadeAnd Made To Be Better

The manufacturing of POLYON controlled-release fertilizer begins with fertilizer substrates (granules). These carefully selected substrates comprise the package of nutrients that will be fed over time to your plants. Agrium selects raw materials based upon coatability, or the receptiveness of the material to coating with the patented RLC technology. We work closely with only a few top industry suppliers to obtain granules that are round, smooth, hard, uniform in size and dust-free. Consistent roundness of shape and smoothness of substrate particles (fewer peaks and valleys in a granules surface) result in a more even coating, which promotes better nutrient delivery. Upon arrival, each batch of substrate is thoroughly inspected for size and coatability. Before the granular substrates are processed, a final inspection is conducted to remove dust and other extraneous materials. The granules then pass through a fluid bed heater where they are heated to 175 Fahrenheit before coating. Next, the heated fertilizer granules enter the coating chamber, where monomer A is applied to them. In this process, monomer A adheres directly to the surface of the substrate. Then, monomer B is applied to the surface of the granules and it chemically reacts and bonds with monomer A, co-polymerizing to create a superior polymer coating. Monomer B also contains a pigment that gives POLYON fertilizer its patented, trademark green color. The number of layers of monomer A and monomer B are determined by the final desired coating thickness. The thickness of the polymer coating determines how long a POLYON product will last. A POLYON fertilizer can be made to release 100% of its nutrients from one month all the way up to 14 months. It is our exclusive coatingwhich is different from any other polymer, polyurethane or resin coating on the marketthat makes POLYON the premier coated fertilizer in the world today.

Controlled-Release Fertilizer

Passing All The Tests

Agrium Advanced Technologies upholds the highest level of quality control and assurance. Our comprehensive product testing processes are unmatched in the industry, and we wont sell products that do not measure up to your standards. To produce the highest quality products every time, our quality-control experts put POLYON fertilizers through a series of meticulous inspections, ensuring that coating evenness, thickness and proper nutrient release have been achieved without fail. POLYON nursery fertilizer products are thoroughly inspected using what we call the Hold, Test and Release method. In this process, all finished

products are automatically put on Hold while various Tests are conducted. Every batch is tested for a full seven days at realistically hot climate conditions (86 F or 30 C) until top-quality results are achieved. After the products pass these testsand only thenare they placed on Release for shipment. These exacting steps ensure that every POLYON bag leaves our facilities with Agriums stamp of approval, and that you receive high-quality products with unprecedented performance. Because of our Hold, Test, Release method, you can expect consistency with no surprises.

Root Enhancer
HUMIC ACIDS PLUS IRON
Manufactured for:

TM

PRODUCT INFORMATION Harrells MAX Root Enhancer is a specially formulated blend of naturally occurring organic compounds and chelated Iron (Fe) designed for both foliar and soil application. When used at the recommended rates Root Enhancer will improve uptake and translocation of Iron (Fe) within the plant. The increase in available Iron is essential in improving nitrogen metabolism and aids in energy transfer, which promotes chlorophyll production and intensifies green color. When used as a soil drench Root Enhancer can stimulate the activity of desirable microorganisms, such as mycorrhiza and symbiotic bacteria. Multiple applications have been shown to stimulate plant growth, especially during periods of environmental stress. RECOMMENDED RATES Greens & Tees: Apply 2.5 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. every 3-4 weeks in enough water to allow for thorough coverage. For initial application, apply 4 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. If preferred, continued 4 oz. applications will improve plant vigor and not harm plants. Fairways & Athletic Fields: Apply 3-4 qts. per acre as needed. Establishing Greens & Other Turf: Apply 4 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. when sprigging or seeding. Continue 4 oz. applications every 2 weeks until grass has grown in. Container Grown Ornamentals & Trees: To enhance growth of container grown trees and ornamentals, dilute 2 oz. of Root Enhancer per 1 gallon of water and apply as a soil drench in the spring and fall. Transplants, Ornamentals & Trees:To minimize transplant shock and enhance growing medium of ornamentals and trees, dilute 2 oz. of Root Enhancer per 1 gallon of water and apply a soil drench initially and then twice annually (spring and fall). Highly effective liquid formulation designed to correct and prevent Magnesium deciencies Assists in chlorophyll production

Magnesium is an important secondary nutrient, very essential for photosynthesis, since it is part of the chlorophyll molecule. Insufficient amounts of Magnesium will appear as a loss of green color at the bottoms of older leaves. Severe deficiencies will also affect younger leaves and can result in the formation of lesions. High levels of calcium and potassium can reduce Magnesium uptake. MAX Magnesium assists in chlorophyll production, providing Magnesium in a form that is readily available for both soil and foliar applications. It is ideal for mixing with acid sensitive products and is generally not affected by soil conditions, other nutrients or technical grade materials.

Roles of Essential Nutrients in Plants LIQUID NUTRITIONALS

Role of Essential Nutrients in Plants

Sixteen plant food nutrients are essential for proper crop development. Each is equally important to the plant, yet each is required in vastly different amounts. These differences have led to the grouping of these essential elements into three categories; primary (macro) nutrients, secondary nutrients, and micronutrients. PRIMARY (MACRO) NUTRIENTS Primary (macro) nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. They are the most frequently required in a crop fertilization program. Also, they are needed in the greatest total quantity by plants as fertilizer. NITROGEN (N) Necessary for formation of amino acids, the building blocks of protein Essential for plant cell division, vital for plant growth Directly involved in photosynthesis Necessary component of vitamins Aids in production and use of carbohydrates Affects energy reactions in the plant PHOSPHORUS (P) Involved in photosynthesis, respiration, energy storage and transfer, cell division, and enlargement Promotes early root formation and growth Improves quality of fruits, vegetables, and grains Vital to seed formation Helps plants survive harsh winter conditions Increases water-use efficiency Hastens maturity POTASSIUM (K) Carbohydrate metabolism and the break down and translocation of starches Increases photosynthesis Increases water-use efficiency Essential to protein synthesis Important in fruit formation Activates enzymes and controls their reaction rates Improves quality of seeds and fruit Improves winter hardiness Increases disease resistance

Harrells Horticulture Product Guide | 27

Roles of Essential Nutrients in Plants LIQUID NUTRITIONALS

SECONDARY NUTRIENTS The secondary nutrients are calcium, magnesium, and sulphur. For most crops, these three are needed in lesser amounts than the primary nutrients. They are growing in importance in crop fertilization programs due to more stringent clean air standards and efforts to improve the environment. CALCIUM (Ca) Utilized for Continuous cell division and formation Involved in nitrogen metabolism Reduces plant respiration Aids in translocation of photosynthesis from leaves to fruiting organs Increases fruit set Essential for nut development in peanuts Stimulates microbial activity MAGNESIUM (Mg) Key element of chlorophyll production Improves utilization and mobility of phosphorus Activator and component of many plant enzymes Directly related to grass tetany Increases iron utilization in plants Influences earliness and uniformity of maturity SULPHUR (S) Integral part of amino acids Helps develop enzymes and vitamins Promotes nodule formation on legumes Aids in seed production Necessary in chlorophyll formation (though it isnt one of the constituents) MICRONUTRIENTS The micronutrients are boron, chlorine, cooper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. These plant food elements are used in very small amounts, but they are just as important to plant development and profitable crop production as the major nutrients. These nutrients work as activators of many plant functions. BORON (B) Essential for germination of pollon grains and growth of pollen tubes Essential for seed and cell wall formation Promotes maturity Necessary for sugar translocation Affects nitrogen and carbohydrate

28 | Harrells Horticulture Product Guide

Roles of Essential Nutrients in Plants LIQUID NUTRITIONALS

CHLORINE Lack of information about its functions Interferes with P uptake Enhances maturity of small grains on some soils COPPER (Cu) Catalyzes several plant processes Major function in photosynthesis Major function in reproductive stages Indirect role in chlorophyll production Increases sugar content Intensifies color Improves flavor of fruits and vegetables IRON (B) Promotes formation of chlorophyll Acts as an oxygen carrier Reactions involving cell division and growth MAGANESE (Mn) Functions as a part of certain enzyme systems Aids in chlorophyll synthesis Increases the availability of P and CA MOLYBDENUM Required to form the enzyme nitrate reductas which reduces nitrates to ammonium in plants Aids in the formation of legume nodules Needed to convert inorganic phosphates to organic forms in the plant ZINC (Zn) Aids plant growth hormones and enzyme system Necessary for chlorophyll production Necessary for carbohydrate formation Necessary for starch formation Aids in seed formation

In addition to the 13 nutrients listed above, plants require carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, which are extracted from air and water to make up the bulk of plant weight.

Notes
Often not damaging enough to warrant control in the landscape. Time applications before leaf rolls are complete and insects are protected inside the plant material. If mealybugs have formed ovisacs (cottony masses in which eggs are laid), additional applications may be needed at 7-10 day intervals until no new mealybugs are found. Correct identication of spider mite species is essential in determining control timing. A spray program is usually necessary. Apply miticide 2 or 3 times, at 7-10 day intervals. Do not use abamectin on conifers. Crawlers (nymphs) are most susceptible to applications, but timing of emergence varies by scale species. Some crawlers settle on plant foliage and others settle on branches and twigs. Armored scales are generally not susceptible to dormant oil sprays. Long lasting, advanced technology plant pest protection

Controlled-Release Protection

Granular PRECISE Acephate combines effective, controlled-release performance with lower-odor and improved handling.
Horticulture professionals now have a better way to control many of their most destructive insect pests: granular PRECISE Acephate Greenhouse and Nursery Systemic Insecticide. Using the superior coating process developed by Agrium Advanced Technologies (makers of POLYON NPK Controlled-Release Fertilizer), PRECISE Acephate is a dryflowing, encapsulated version of one of the horticulture industrys most trusted plant-protection treatments. And with PRECISE, you minimize the offensive smell of other acephate products. In its granular form, PRECISE Acephate is lower-odor, with improved handling capabilities.

Proven Long-Lasting Control.

To confirm that the slow, controlled release of granular PRECISE Acephate works for a long time, research was conducted on container-grown nursery crops. Replicated studies showed that PRECISE Acephate was still active in those plants for up to 176 days after applicationthats over five months of activity!

Then it gets even better. In addition to improved handling, granular PRECISE Acephate gives you the advantages of controlled-release performance. That means you can just topdress PRECISE Acephate onto your nursery container crops early in the growing season, and get consistent, longlasting control of target insects for months. As the active ingredient inside PRECISE Acephate is released slowly into your potting medium, it is readily absorbed into the plants roots. Then the acephate moves systemically through the plant to provide both preventative and curative control of susceptible feeding insects. When pests attack a plant thats protected by PRECISE Acephate, its their last meal.

This chart shows the longevity of PRECISE Acephate Greenhouse and Nursery Systemic Insecticide when applied in the spring as a topdressing. Treatments were 12 grams of product per three-gallon container (1X rate) and 24 grams of product per three-gallon container (2X rate). The plant tissue samples were then analyzed for acephate concentrations.

PRECISE Greenhouse And Nursery Systemic Insecticide Is Labeled To Control:

Ants (excluding fire, harvester, carpenter and pharoah) Aphids Bagworms Grasshoppers Japanese Beetles Lacebugs Leaf Beetles (including Elm and Viburnum Leaf Beetles) Leafhoppers Leafminers Leafrollers Mealybugs Plant Bugs (Lygus spp.) Psyllids Root Weevils (including Black Vine, Apopka) Scale Thrips Webworms Whiteflies White Grub Larvae (including Elm Leaf and Japanese Beetles)

A Long List Of Benefits.

Thanks to the patented PRECISE technology, horticulture professionals can expect an improved product that adds value and increases efficacy, while being easier to handle. Gradual, long-lasting release Consistent, predictable performance Control unaffected by excess moisture Simple topdress application Easier handling and applying Greatly reduced applicator exposure Less irritating or unpleasant odor No risk of spray drift Less hazardous if spilled Much easier clean-up Less risk of insect damage...for a better bottom line!

Granular PRECISE Acephate can be used in container stock in greenhouses, lathhouses, shadehouses and outdoor production culture. The steady, controlled release of acephate is activated by temperature, not moisture, so even if the plants get extra water, PRECISE still delivers optimal control and protection.

How It Works.
Granular PRECISE Acephate uses the same durable, polymer coating that makes POLYON NPK Controlled-Release Fertilizer so popular and effective. A special ultra-thin layer on each granule slowly lets moisture in and then gradually, consistently releases active ingredients out into the potting medium for months.

H2O H2O H2O H2O H2O H2O H2O H2O H2O Acephate Acephate Acephate

Week One: Moisture Absorption Within a week of application, the polymer coating allows moisture in, which activates the encapsulated acephate but doesnt release it.

Acephate Diffusion Over the next several months, the membrane gradually releases dissolved acephate, only when triggered by temperature.

After Complete Release: Polymer Decompostition Following release of all of the acephate, each granules polymer coating microbially decomposes into naturally occurring soil elements.

Controlled-Release Protection
