3075 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder • 303.442.4427
www.moesbroadwaybagel.com
“What makes Moe’s special is that it offers great products in a friendly
atmosphere,” says Steve Pagnotta, general manager. “Customers appreciate our
quality and freshness. Everything is made fresh. We bake bagels at least every 20
minutes, the pizza and pastries are made from scratch, subs and sandwiches are
made fresh and to order. And everything is made according to the old-school,
New York-style.” Of course, the old school didn’t know about Moe’s jalapeño,
cranberry-walnut or tomato-cheddar bagels, or thin-crust pineapple or artichoke
pizza. No chain store, Moe’s is still a mom-and-pop operation, founded almost
15 years ago by Patty and John Sherman. “This is their community; they live
and work here. They and their families are hands-on,” Pagnotta says. More
sandwich and sub roll menus, pastries and fruit salads are coming in the fall.

BEST BAKERY BREADWORKS CAFE

2644 Broadway, Boulder • 303.444.5667
When customers come into Breadworks and ask, “What’s new?” they mean it literally. Something new is always in
the works. Recent expansion doubled the size of the cafe. A new wood-burning pizza oven turns out Tuscan-style
crispy pizzas. There’s now a line of hot foods and grilled sandwiches, as well as fresh-tossed salads. Breakfast at
Breadworks is elaborate, with such hearty foods as frittatas, French toast made with challah or brioche, and
polenta or red-flannel hash. You can also find freshly spun gelato (try lavender with caramel) and sorbet
(pomegranate is original). Owner Larry Domnitz credits executive chef Colleen Doran and Lola Sarur, her top
assistant, for introducing so many new dishes. He explains Breadworks’ success: “We are fanatical about quality.

says, “We’re grateful for the local, loyal support for Vic’s all these years.” No
doubt that Vic’s is a big hit. Another branch just opened at 1800 Broadway,
and as we go to press CU students will be lining up on campus at the Atlas
Building for their caffeine fix. “We pride ourselves on friendly, fast service,”
says Hartman. Vic’s is also proud that those who prepare espresso drinks are
highly qualified, trained baristas. Sweet accompaniments come fresh from

Winning four different categories is a testament to the
restaurant that manager Jason Berger describes as “casual,
upbeat and fun.” Happy Hour is Monday through
Friday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and includes half off all tapas;
margarita pizzas for $3.50; and a dollar off house red and
white wine, well mixed drinks, red and white sangria and
draft beer. If you’re in the mood for something swankier,
try the Buffalo Margarita, made by mixing Petrone
Silver, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and a splash of orange
juice, and then shaken. Hard. Another favorite is the
Pomtini, made with Pearl pomegranate vodka and a
splash of Chambourd. Enjoy these refreshments on the
newly remodeled patio, featuring a new fountain and
mosaic, designed in a classic Mediterranean fashion
and riddled with flowers. Once you’re settled in, take
some time to peruse the 40 different appetizers. If
you’re feeling overwhelmed by deliciousness, try one of
the favorites: grilled skirt steak with olive oil and bleu
cheese crumbles; grilled, marinated lamb brochettes; or
caprese with fresh, homemade mozzarella. Berger adds,
“Generally people say we have the best fried calamari
in town.” Given the fabulous patio; the wealth of
unique and authentic appetizers and the stellar happy
hour, how could the Med NOT be the best after-work
gathering spot in town? But don’t worry – the Med is

MOUNT SANITAS
www.ci.boulder.co.us/openspace
Just blocks from downtown Boulder you can immerse yourself in mountain fun, and the fun doesn’t get any
closer or better than Mount Sanitas. Just ask one of the many lunch-hour peakbaggers that you’ll find up there
on any given weekday. At the mouth of Sunshine Canyon on Mapleton Avenue (just west of 4th Street and
past the Boulder Community Hospital Mapleton Center) you can pick up the trailhead on the north side of
the road. Just a hop and a skip away you’ll feel like you’re miles from town. Often, Mount Sanitas climbers
will do the loop hike: If you take the south ridge first, you’ll climb 1,300 feet up a steep and rocky trail for 1.4
miles before gaining the summit. At 6,683 feet, you’ll be rewarded with some great views of Boulder and the
Indian Peaks. From there you can descend the steep east ridge to the valley floor, where it joins the wide,
graveled Sanitas Valley Trail, which is nestled between Mount Sanitas and Dakota Ridge. This hike is a little
more than 3 miles round trip and it takes most people about two hours – this average doesn’t include the
many trail runners you’ll see wizzing by as you’re huffing your way up.

It’s no wonder Vail was chosen by Boulder County residents – yet again –
as Colorado’s best ski resort. Just look at the numbers – sunny days each
year: 300; average annual snowfall: 346 inches; total number of lifts: 33;
number of conventional ski trails: 193; number of terrain parks: 4
(including one 400-foot-long Superpipe with 18-foot walls); longest run:
4 miles; and vertical rise (from base to peak): 3,450 feet. But if those
numbers aren’t enough to convince you, did you know that Vail, with
5,289 skiable acres, is the largest ski resort in the United States? Or did
you know that Vail boasts the most groomed terrain in the world? Or how

BEST TREE NURSERY THE TREE FARM

11865 Mineral Road (Hwy 52), Longmont • 303.652.2961 • www.thetreefarmlongmont.com
The Tree Farm’s 35 acres of land are covered in possibility. Flowering, fruit, shade, evergreen – there are literally thousands of trees, shrubs
and perennials from which to choose. And happily, there are more than 60 knowledgeable nursery professionals on staff to help you make
your selections. “Everybody says this,” laughs manager Mike Gittleson. “But what makes us different is quality, selection and service. Here
it’s true.” Locally owned since 1980, The Tree Farm is stocked with our harsh climate in mind. Staff members don’t want you to buy just
any plant. They want to help you find the perfect plant for a specific spot in your yard. They want your landscape to thrive. And if you
need a little extra service, just ask. The friendly folks at The Tree Farm can help with landscape design, delivery and installation.

Randy Dilkes is amazed by how much stuff McGuckin Hardware can

items and 51 years later, this locally owned, family business remains true
to its roots. When you walk through the door, you’ll be greeted by
friendly, knowledgeable folks who will help you find what you need –
from nuts and bolts to ceiling fans to dog food to electric bikes. “We’ve

With so many dog and cat lovers here in Boulder County, it’s hard to believe there was a time before P.C.’s Pantry.
Featuring an almost ridiculous array of leashes, collars, toys, beds, books and more, the shop in the old Steelyards

freshly baked, wild concoctions like liver loaves and salmon cookies laid out in the display cases, it’s almost guaranteed

HURDLES JEWELRY
1402 Pearl St., Boulder • 303.443.1084 • www.hurdlesjewelry.com
“If anybody walks through the front door, we should be able to handle any
request that they have,” explains third-generation owner Keith Hurdle. After
almost 60 years in business on the Pearl Street Mall (making them the oldest
retailer on the Mall without a name change), the commitment to customer
service at Hurdles Jewelry has stood the test of time. “We can either find the
product they’re looking for, make the product they’re looking for or refer them
to someone who carries it.” With three in-house designers, the store offers
full-blown custom work, so bring your design in and let their professionals
hop to it. Of course, the customer service at Hurdles extends far beyond those
seeking jewelry. With on-going donations of time, money and expertise
bestowed upon the community, Hurdles has made a name for itself with
non-profit organizations such as the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. “I
try not to say no to anybody who’s local. I don’t care if it’s a school event, Boy
Scouts, whoever.” For Keith Hurdle, it boils down to treating people right.
“It’s a time in people’s lives where they’re trying to do something nice for
somebody else and I think they should be treated accordingly.”
