Noted Indian scientist Dr C N R Rao has been conferred with Chinas top science award for his important contributions in boosting Sino-India scientific cooperation. Chinese Academy of Sciences gave its 2012 Award for International Scientific Cooperation to three scientists from India, Germany, and Russia.

The Foundation for Amity & National Solidarity, Delhi has been selected for the National Communal Harmony Award for the year 2012 by the Jury headed by the VicePresident of India. Formed in 1984, the Foundation for Amity & National Solidarity (FANS) is a Delhi based Trust which works for spreading amity and communal harmony. It has organized numerous seminars, workshops, symposiums, inter-religious meets, youth camps, sadbhavana sabhas and rallies to promote social amity. The Foundation has instituted National Amity Award, which is given every year to an eminent personality. A serial Yeh Gulistan Hamara produced by the Foundation on national integration was telecast on Doordarshan.

ABOUT AWARD:

The National Communal Harmony Awards were instituted in 1996 by the National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH), an autonomous organization set up by

the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, for promoting communal harmony and national integration. In addition to a citation, the award carries a cash prize of Rupees five lakh for the Organisation.

8 States get Krishi Karman Awards for Achieving Excellence in Foodgrain Production

Krishi Karman Awards for 2011-12 are given to Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Manipur, Nagaland, Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. The awards were instituted in 2010-11 for recognizing the meritorious efforts of States in foodgrain production. The awards are presented by the President to Chief Ministers or Agriculture Ministers of these States. In addition, ten States are being given commendation awards. Krishi Karman Awards are given to best performing States in two broad sets. One for the total foodgrain production and the other for the individual foodgrain crops of rice, wheat, pulses and coarse cereals. States for total foodgrains category are further divided into three categories based on total foodgrain production capacity of the State. Award winning States get a trophy, a citation and cash award. The cash award is Rs. 2 crores for total foodgrain production and Rs. 1 crore for each of the four individual crops. The commendation awards go to Punjab, Uttarakhand, Assam, West Bengal, Tripura, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh.

These States achieved record production and productivity levels in total foodgrains or in any of the individual crops but scored relatively lesser marks on other criteria compared to the top awardees.

2013 Abel Prize To Belgian Pierre Deligne

Belgian mathematician Pierre Deligne who is regarded as one of the most celebrated mathematicians of the 20th century, has been chosen for this years prestigious Abel Prize in Mathematics.

Award is given to him for his seminal contributions to algebraic geometry and for their transformative impact on number theory, representation theory and related fields. The Abel Prize is an international prize presented by the King of Norway to one or more outstanding mathematicians. Named after Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802 1829), the award was established in 2001 by the Government of Norway and complements the Holberg Prize in the humanities, social sciences, law and theology. The Abel Prize has often been described as the mathematicians Nobel prizes and are among the most prestigious awards in mathematics. It comes with a monetary award of 6 million Norwegian kroner (NOK) (approximately US$1 million), to be used to fund future research.

Alice Ann Munro (born 10 July 1931) is a Canadian author writing in English. The recipient of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature and the 2009 Man Booker International Prize for her lifetime body of work, she is also a three-time winner of Canadas Governor Generals Award for fiction.

Eleanor Catton won the 2013 Man Booker prize for English fiction for her novel The Luminaries and became the youngest winner in the awards 45-year history. The 28-year-old New Zealand novelist
Indian-American Jhumpa Lahiri for The Lowland At 832 pages, The Luminaries is the longest work to win the prize in its 45-year history. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2013 was awarded jointly to James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Sdhof Renowned actress Waheeda Rehman will be conferred with the Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year at the International Film Festival of India 2013 in Panjim, Goa.

The Government has decided to confer, the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award on eminent scientist Prof C.N.R.Rao and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. Prof. C.N.R. Rao is an eminent scientist and a well recognized international authority on solid state and materials chemistry. Sachin Tendulkar became the first sportsperson and the youngest ever Indian to be awarded the countrys highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna.
The Infosys Prize 2013 in Life Sciences is awarded to Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Director, CSIR-Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology, for his work in the field of lipid metabolism in tubercle bacilli. IRCON International Limited, a Public Sector Undertaking in construction sector under the Ministry of Railways, was selected as the Top Infrastructure Company under the category Construction Infrastructure Development Mid at the Dun and Bradstreet Infra Awards 2013 for delivering exemplary performance by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), the worlds leading provider of global business information, knowledge and insight, announced and presented the third edition of Infra awards.

Esteban Felix Wins Gabriel Garcia Marquez Award

Associated Press photographer Esteban Felix won the Gabriel Garcia Marquez International Journalism Award for his work on sugar cane workers affected by chronic kidney disease in Nicaragua.

Peruvian photographer Esteban Felix was among the winners of this years Gabriel Garcia Marquez International Journalism Awards in Medellin, Colombia. Felix, a Peruvian who is based in Nicaragua, described the winning project, Bitter Sugar: A Mystery Disease, as a multimedia and photography effort about the cane cutters at the San Antonio sugar plant.

India environmentalist Bunker Roy and Pakistans teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai were declared winners of this years of the prestigious Clinton Global Citizens Awards. Roy is the founder of the Barefoot College, which has been providing solutions to problems in rural communities for more than 40 years. A High-level Jury under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and comprising the Chief Justice of India, Justice Altamas Kabir, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Smt. Sushma Swaraj and Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi after detailed discussions on 4th July, 2013, unanimously decided to select Shri Zubin Mehta to be the second recipient of the Tagore Award, 2013 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to cultural harmony. The annual award was instituted by the Govt. of India during the commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. The first Tagore Award was conferred on Pt. Ravi Shankar, the Indian Sitar Maestro in 2012. The award carries an amount of Rs. 1 crore, a citation in a scroll, a plaque as well as an exquisite traditional handicraft/handloom item. The award is open to all persons regardless of nationality, race, language, caste, creed or sex.

India Bags 3 Awards At SAARC Film Festival

India bagged three top awards including the Best Feature Film, the Best Director and Special Jury Certificate of Recognition at the third SAARC Film Festival in Colombo. Indian film Paan Singh Tomar won the best Feature Film award for its fascinating plot and strong direction.

The Director of the film, Tigmanshu Dhulia was named the Best Director. Kaushal Oza from India received a Special Jury Award for his documentary Afterglow. A panel of International Jury Members from Singapore, Russia and Iran adjudicated at the festival. Dilhan Perera, Sri Lankas Minister of Foreign Employment, Promotion and Welfare gave away the Awards. The third SAARC Film Festival was held between this week in Colombo. Films from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka competed in both Feature and Documentary categories
The Manipur-based Youth Development Organization (YDO) and the Charba Grama Panchayat of Uttarkhand are among the five recipients of the first national award for prevention of alcoholism and drug abuse.

This project has created an automating payment and creation of direct cash transfers into pensioners bank accounts. Graamin Haat programme of Department of Cottage and Rural Industries in Madhya Pradesh: This programme created Women Self Help Groups (WSHGs) that operates its own haats (weekly markets). The initiative provided women an opportunity to acquire management skills, operate a business on their own and improve overall living conditions in their communities

Indian Film Bags Yellow Oscar Award

Indian short film High Power, has won the Yellow Oscar award at the Uranium Film Festival at Rio-de-Janeiro, Brazil. This film (made in 2012) is based on the project- affected people of Tarapur Atomic Power Station. The film depicts the woes of the people displaced by the nuclear power plant built in 1960s. Pradeep Indulkar is the producer-director of this film accepted the award.

Lydia Davis Won Man Booker Prize

American writer Lydia Davis has won the 5th (60,000 pound) Man Booker International Prize. A professor of creative writing at the University of Albany, Ms. Davis is also an accomplished translator. Her works include The End of the Story and Varieties of Disturbance. Lydia Davis has written some short stories of conventional length, but most range from one to three pages, while others are just a paragraph or sentence long.

Asom Ratna Award & Srimanta Shankardeva Award

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented the Asom Ratna Award (posthumously) to Late Smt. Indira Goswami and the Srimanta Shankardeva Award for the year 2008 to Smt. Sharmila Tagore on May 13, 2013 at a function at Guwahati, Assam.

The President congratulated Shrimati Tagore for her rich contribution to Indias cultural life. He said as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and Chairperson of the Indian Film Censor Board, Smt. Sharmila Tagore has used her influence to promote initiatives aimed at bringing positive change in our society. The President also welcomed the recognition, by the Government of Assam, of the contribution of Late Smt. Indira Goswami by awarding her the Asom Ratna Award posthumously. The President congratulated the Government of Assam for instituting the Srimanta Sankardeva Award.

He said that this award would propagate the teachings of Swami Srimanta Shankardeva, an Assamese saint, scholar and social reformer who lived in the 15th and 16th Centuries. His Neo-Vaishnava movement repudiated caste barriers and sought to create an egalitarian civil society based on the shared values of fraternity, equity, humanism and democracy

National Technology Day Awards 2013

The National Award for 2013 was given to M/s Biovet Private Limited,Malur, Kolar, Karnataka for successful commercial production of Bluetonguepentavalent vaccine and Johnes disease vaccine for the first time in India. The technology was provided by Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI)Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Instituted by the Technology Development Board (TDB) in 1999 the Award carries an amount of Rs.10Lakh and a trophy each to the Industrial Concern and the technology provider.

The Award to encourage Small Scale Industries (SSI units) for 2013 and also to successfully commercialize product based on indigenous technologies, developed by SSI Unit for the year 2013 was given to M/s PYRODYNAMICS,Bengaluru for development and commercialization of a digital Strain Measurement System. The award carries an amount of Rs. 5 Lakhs and a trophy. The Second award in this category went to M/s Accurate Gauging & instruments Pvt. Ltd, Pune for development and commercialization of a Coordinate Measuring Machine in 3D device for Measuring the Physical Geometrical Characteristics of an Object.

Indian-American Wins National Geographic Bee Contest

Sathwik Karnik, an Indian-origin boy from Massachusetts has won this years National Geographic Bee contest after gruelling rounds. National Geographic Bee is an annual geography contest sponsored by the National Geographic Society since 1989.

To clinch the title, Karnik correctly named Chimborazo as the mountain in Ecuador that represents the farthest point from the Earths centre.

The award instituted in 1969, is conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. The award consists of a Swarn Kamal, a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs and a shawl. The award is given on the basis of recommendations of a Committee of eminent persons.

President Pranab Mukherjee conferred Padma Awards, the countrys highest civilian awards. This year the President approved 109 awards including one duo case (counted as one) and 14 in the category of Foreigners/ NRIs/ PIOs/ Posthumous. These comprise 5 Padma Vibhushan, 27 Padma Bhushan and 77 Padma Shri Awards.

ABOUT THESE AWARDS:


The Padam Awards are given by Central Government. The most recognized are Padma awards which are Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna with increasing order of merit. They are awarded every year. However, the most coveted and highest civilian award Bharat Ratna may not necessarily be awarded every year. The Padma awards are civilian awards for a broad set of achievements in fields such as Education, Arts, Civil Service, or Social Service. Awards were also bestowed posthumously and they are also given for foreign citizens. There was no honours system until 1954, when the following awards were instituted:

Bharat Ratna
Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian Award of the country, was instituted in the year 1954. The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister himself to the President.

The number of annual awards is restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year.

Padma Awards
Padma Awards were instituted in the year 1954. Except for brief interruption(s) during the years 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997, these awards have been announced every year on Republic Day. The award is given in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. Padma Shri is awarded for distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order; and Padma Vibhushan for exceptional and distinguished service. The Awards are announced on 26 January every year and are presented by the President of India in an Awards presentation Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The ceremony is generally held in the month of March/April.
