Conceived by a few like-minded youngsters fro m diverse background from a Geologist to an Economist . The group along with another inspired senior citizen decided to accumulate funds for the purpose with a contribution from their income, which ranged from Rs50 t o Rs1000 per month each contributing voluntarily according to their own financia l capability. It started in 1985 in Calcutta with four women [Rekha Mod y, Neeru Poddar, Prabha Kumar and Amrit Agarwal] who decided to take the first s tep to create a support line for orphan children. The vision was soon shared by Louise Nicholson from UK, who, in 1986, rescued an eight year old girl. The girl worked in a local beauty parlour - she was sweeping the floors. Today she is a trained beautician and leads a self supporting life with dignity.

The Trust, in collaboration with renowned institutes like Ramakrishna Vivekanand a Mission, Sulabh International, Cini-Asha, National Council of Women in India a nd the All Bengal Women`s Union Children`s Welfare Home, has today expanded to f ar-flung areas of Bengal, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Divya Chaya is also working i n tandem with the UK-based charity, Save-a-Child, where one of their first suppo rters, Louise Nicholson, is one of the trustees. While funds have largely come f rom corporate and individual efforts, Divya Chaya`s Save-a-Child project makes i t possible to sponsor a child from anywhere in the world. These children are pla ced at organisations like the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission at Barrackpore or Delhi, or at the Child Care Home [Kolkata]. They are provided a home, nutritious food, proper clothing, a decent education and, most importantly, love and secur ity. The trust has also initiated the Kusum Sarovar programme in UP, under which a free school has been set up for children below the poverty line.

With the conviction that children and women`s welfare are linked, Divya Chaya al so assists in rehabilitating destitute women. In 1986, it built a village centre at Rajarhat in West Bengal. Here, the women receive formal and vocational educa tion, are educated about their legal rights, and even taught banking and finance . A medical centre and hostel rooms have also been set up at the village, and qu alified psychologists look after the women`s mental health. In addition, the wom en are helped to secure loans to set up their own business. Not content to rest on its laurels, the trust has also opened a craft centre at Sealdah. A major por tion of the women`s work is sold in the UK through Save-a-Child.

We also provided Community Based Rehabili tation and training centre and workshop for the adult disabled boys, girls and w omen absolutely free of cost and 99 % of disabled those who having come from the very poorest of poor families in urban and rural areas, at present 186 disabled children both girls and boys are constantly benefited from us. As far as the rest of the disabled children are concerned who are not able to at tend the regular school for some problems, we take them under our wings. We educ ate them, give vocational training in many departments to empower them and make them self-dependent. We also try to motivate them and take confidence building m easure. In general we try to make them believe in themselves and be confident en ough to face the real world and earn a living with dignity. We need financial assistance for the continuing of the projects for pre-school i ntervention primarily to prepare the disabled for their schooling in special sch ools and integration at the appropriate stage in regular schools.
