The Gold Rush Week 3Day 9: Prices Rise!

(60 minutes) Objective Students will be able to identify and describe inflation and how it affected people during the time of the Gold Rush in California. Standards Common Core State StandardsMeasurement and Data (CCSSMD): 1. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. 2. Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale. CSSCS 4.4 Students explain how CA became an economic and industrial power tracing the transformation of the CA economy as well as the political and social development since the 1850s. 2. Explain how the Gold Rush transformed the economy of CA including the types of products produced and consumed, changes in towns (Sacramento, San Francisco) and economic conflicts between diverse groups of people. ISTE 3: Research and Information Fluency Preparation You will need to have instruction ready regarding the specific numbers in the rise of the cost of goods in California during the Gold Rush. This will primarily come from pages 236-239 in the Reflections text. Information regarding the extreme rise in the population should be reviewed at this time since the class will be doing a graph representing the data. *She attached worksheets below

Also, the computers will need to be ready to use (groupings) in order to complete the Excel assignment. You will need to review the proper use of Excel and how to create a graph (bar and single line) representing the information found in the research.

Guided Instruction Read pages 236-239 in the Reflections text. Take some time explaining the population graph on page 237. Direct the class to page 239 in the text. The definition for inflation is, a sharp increase in prices, take time to have the class discuss how and why this was evident during the Gold Rush. You will be directing the class to work in pairs or independently to research the prices of these mining tools and items during the Gold Rush and prior to when it began. It will also be important during the direct instruction to point out the extreme difference in the cost of these items for mining before the Gold Rush began and when the boom started. Model on the document camera how to input data into excel and create a graph. Students should understand that the prices of items during the Gold Rush were far different than they were before the Gold Rush began. Independent Activity Students will create a spreadsheet and graph using Excel documenting the rise in the population of CA during the Gold Rush. Students will also understand that the prices of items during the Gold Rush were far different than they were before the Gold Rush began. Calculate the differences in the prices of common items for before and after. Create a graph on excel displaying your findings of both (population and items

for mining.) For extra credit, students can do research on the population of various immigrant groups during the Gold Rush and make a pie graph using excel. Homework For homework this evening, students should complete page 62-63 in the Reflections homework and practice workbook.
