THE MEASURING PRINCIPLE DISTANCE MEASUREMENT BY LASER TRIANGULATION A laser beam emitted from the sensor creates a visible spot on the surface of the measured object. Depen ding on the distance, a CCD line scan camera beside the laser views this spot under varying angles. Using this angle and the known distance of laser and camera, the Digital Signal Processor computes the distance between the sensor and the measured object. The coil prole is assessed by traversing the sensor across the coil sidewall.
THE BENEFIT Immediately after coiling, the measurement systems precisely scan the sidewall prole of all coils. They identify typical coiling errors like: Inside and outside telescope Oscillating runs (zig-zag contours) Clenched slivers Loose coiling Convex/concave walls
IMMEDIATE INFORMATION The measurement results are available immediately after completion of the measurement cycle. Coils reeled up faulty are identied and can be recoiled if required, avoiding rejected shipments, devaluations or discounts, and partial or subsequent shipments. The automatic inspection of the sidewall prole reduces the need for visual coil inspection and manual coil measurements by operating personnel. The graphical display of coil proles even shows trends of important rolling parameters like coiler control and cooling line function. Beside immediate information about improperly reeled coils, the measurement provides feedback to the coiling model, allowing a permanent optimization of the coiling process.
SAFE TRANSPORT Sidewalls of good reeled coils being compact, they suer much less edge damages during transport. Properly reeled coils hence arrive awless at the customers.
SMOOTH PROCESSING Evenly reeled coils can be uncoiled with maximum speed in pickling lines or cold rolling mills, ensuring maximum plant eciency.
COMPLETE DOCUMENTATION To achieve continuous production documentation, the integrated database of the measurement systems stores raw and condensed statistical data for several months. A link from the material tracking system transfers customer and product specic data to the prole gauges, allowing a fully automatic measurement sequence and easy retrieval of historical data.
