Welcome to the charming Hanseatic City of Bremen!

Jacobs University is situated in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen a city with maritime atmosphere and 1,200 years of history. The historical market square is famous for Bremens mascots, the Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairytale, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. More than 30,000 students live and study in the state of Bremen. Off-campus there are many restaurants, pubs, clubs, museums, theaters and other venues to explore. Bremen is home to the Freimarkt, Germanys oldest funfair, and the traditional Christmas market is a popular destination not just for locals. The Schlachte area along the Weser River and the Viertel quarter are known for their vibrant nightlife.

The Winter School is open to applicants currently enrolled as undergraduate and graduate students, as well as exceptionally qualied secondary school graduates. Research associates are also welcome to attend the methods courses. Students who wish to take part in Jacobs Universitys Winter School in 2014 must hand in their application by October 31, 2013. Excursions
Students can enjoy their leisure time with excursions throughout the region. Centrally located in Europe, Bremen serves as the ideal starting point for trips to European destinations such as Hamburg, Brussels and Amsterdam. Bremen is also the only German city that has an international airport within ten minutes of the city center. For participants of the seminar German Politics and Culture, a university-led study trip to Germanys capital Berlin will be offered.

Excerpt from our Course Program 2014 Experience the World (Undergraduate Level)
German Politics and Culture 5 ECTS This highly interactive course provides students with an introduction to contemporary politics and recent history of Germany. At the same time, the course applies selected theoretical perspectives from the breadth of social sciences to contextualize the German experience, including inuential works from political sociology, political science, social psychology and political economy. The course is supplemented by a eld trip to the nations capital, Berlin. Africas Role in the 21st Century 5 ECTS This course, taught by former ambassador Dr. Claas Knoop, covers current developments on the African continent and its position in the globalized world. In particular, the course focuses on questions of development and security policies in African-European relations. Human Trafcking: An International Perspective 5 ECTS This course will examine the de nition of human trafcking and study a number of legal instruments (conventions and laws) to come to a full understanding of how human trafcking is de ned. A discussion turns to what we actually know about human trafcking how we measure the problem, why it is so difcult to determine just how many persons are being trafcked and whether a person is a trafcked victim.

Winter School at Jacobs University
The Winter School at Jacobs University is an annual academic program that takes place during the January intersession and invites students from around the world to join the Jacobs community in learning and living together on campus. Courses, which range from politics to art to methodology, are taught by international faculty from Jacobs University and its partner institutions. Students can earn up to 5 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) at both undergraduate and graduate levels. An ofcial transcript is provided at the end of the program so that credits can be transferred to the home institution.

Accommodation The World of Methods (Graduate Level)


Mathematical Methods for Logistics and Economics 5 ECTS The course is an introduction to basic concepts of linear algebra, probability, and optimization, with view on their applications in logistics and economics. Since methods and techniques from these elds are extensively used for building quantitative models in all areas of science, engineering, and economics, the course may also be used to refresh or deepen mathematical knowledge on graduate level. Mixed Methods 2 ECTS Mixed methods, i.e. the combination of elements from quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, has been gaining in importance as a research design over the past years. This hands-on course will guide students through the stages of conducting a mixed methods study. We will look at the different kinds of mixed methods designs and at issues that arise during sampling, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Students taking this course must be familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
