Bad Timing for Mixed Marble Potato Shortage

market marketnotes notes

produce market report February 4, 2014

Mixed pee wee potatoes or mixed marbles are very popular for Valentines Day but a lot of the crop got frozen out last week leading to untimely shortages.

Good Buys:
A wave of nice weather in asparagus growing regions like Mexico and Peru is driving a very advantageous market for buyers this week. There is an overabundance due to warm sunshine and weak demand because cold in the east limits restaurant traffic. Yellow squash and zucchini as well as cucumbers and green peppers are coming in very consistently with good prices. Blood and Cara Cara Oranges are beautiful and readily available. This is prime time for gorgeous blackberries out of Mexico. There are no issues with supply and the quality is excellent.

Broccoli and broccoli crown prices have improved greatly with warmer temperatures in the growing areas. Brussels Sprout prices are finally lower after months of high demand. Supplies are much more plentiful and prices should remain low for the time being. Mexico is shipping beautiful eggplant and the prices are way down right now. Romaine, iceberg, mesculin, baby spinach and arugula, boston and other leafy lettuces continue to flow into our facility with excellent pricing and good quality. Now is the time to feature Florida grapefruit and tangerines.

Keep in Mind:
Avocados have now settled into a normal pricing cycle after the big run-up before the Super Bowl. The avocado shippers always prioritize retail orders during the time around the big game which causes a spike in demand but that has passed. There are no problems with these buttery smooth fruits. Guatemala is sending us some beautiful melons right now. Order up on both cantaloupes and honeydews for good quality and steady pricing. Grapes are all from Chile now and the quality is very nice. Green grapes are a little more expensive this early in the Chilean season. Stone fruit like peaches, nectarines, red and black plums are here in quantity from Chile. Apricots just arrived from New Zealand.

Strawberries have stabilized a bit with good quality from Mexico and Florida. Heres a word of warning, however for stem strawberries: give us a little notice on your Valentines Day requirements as this is a very popular Valentines item. Call your rep or customer service as early as possible to avoid being disappointed. Honeybell Tangelos are newly arrived from Florida and you want to make sure to give these a try. They are not super sweet but oh, so juicy with a tartness you will love. Red and yellow peppers from Mexico are free from any shortages and the quality is very nice. Kale and mustard greens are uncharacteristically high this week with short supply and high demand. For mustard, we are limited to California as the only source of supply. Raspberries are beautiful but expensive.

Watch
We are still experiencing a dire shortage in reasonably priced tomatoes. Floridas cold weather has slowed the growth and picking has come to a stand still. Cherries and grapes are particularly difficult to source. Mixed pee wee potatoes are popular for Feb. 14 and high!

February Fruits of the Month: Honeybell Tangelo & Minneola Tangelo

Origin: Florida Item No. 19003, 64 ct

Origin: California Item No. 19004, 64 ct

Keany Produce is pleased to feature two February Fruits of the Month: the Honeybell Tangelo and the Minneola Tangelo. These citrus fruits are coming to Keany Produce from two different locations: the Honeybell Tangelo is from Florida, while the Minneola Tangelo, a Sunkist item, is from sunny California. Tangelos are a citrus fruit hybrid of tangerine and grapefruit. One difference between these two tangelos is the size of the rind the rind of the Minneola tends to be thin, while the rind of the Honeybell is a bit thicker. Both tangelos generally have loose skin though and are considered more easily peeled than oranges. Perhaps tangelos most distinguishing characteristic are their elongated stem. While the Minneola appears to be bell-shaped due to its stem-end neck, the Honeybell tends to be a bit larger, as well as sweeter in taste. Although they may not be visually appealing, the outer characteristics of these tangelos are often overlooked by their juicy flesh and flavorful, sweet taste. Tangelos can add a distinctive flavor to marmalades and mimosas, and also serve as the main focus in a variety of dishes and desserts including pork stir-fry, buttermilk scones, sorbet and even crme brle.
