Forty-eight hours after he emerged as the uncrowned king of world cricket, BCCI president N. Srinivasan found himself mired in conflict of interest allegations as fingers were once again pointed at his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. The Supreme Courtappointed committee headed by Justice Mukul Mudgal has accepted that Meiyappan was the face of Mr Srinivasans Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings when the IPL-6 spot-fixing controversy erupted, and that he had not only betted, but also passed on information on the team during IPLs sixth season. The BCCI strongman faces both embarrassment and a serious threat to the existence of CSK. The committee noted that allegations of betting and spot-fixing against Rajashthan Royals coowner Raj Kundra had some basis and needed to be further examined. The report said: Allegations of betting and spot-fixing

The seventh season of IPL is in jeopardy, so too the future of two of its franchises Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals (subject to a probe) after stunning, but not unexpected revelations by the SC appointed factfinding committee headed by retired judge, Justice
Mukul Mudgal. Going by clause 11.3 (c) of the IPL franchise agreement, CSK is in grave and immediate danger of total loss of credibility, fall in business valuation from an estimated `1,000 crore and, ultimately, of being debarred from the league. The well-known pattern of repeated conflict of interests of BCCI president N. Srinivasan has
may see this issue being stretched now to all possible legal limits before any penal action on his team is contemplated. A source close to his legal eagles is downplaying the fallout of the report, saying its findings are only recommendatory in nature and that the written word of the SC alone would decide the future course of action.
President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday approved the Telangana Bill for introduction in Parliament. It is, however, not clear when the Bill will come up in Parliament. The T Bill was not the part of the Revised List of Business of Rajya Sabha which was issued late in the night. It appears that the government is still mulling over introducing the Bill in the Rajya Sabha as doubts have been raised over bringing the legislation, which contains financial implications and expenditure from the Consolidate Fund of India, first in the Upper House. As per Article 109 of the Constitution, any Bill that involves expenditure should be first introduced only in the Lok Sabha and not in the Rajya Sabha. The Constitution also says it is the responsibility of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to decide whether a legislation is a money Bill or not before introduction. However, there is a B category which allows a Bill containing financial assurances from the Consolidated Fund to be introduced in either House of Parliament. According to reports,

Finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy on Monday presented the vote-on-account Budget to the State Assembly for 2014-2015 with the highest ever outlay of `1,83,129 crore. His Budget speech was probably the shortest on record. Due to disruptions from MLAs, he wound up his speech in less than 10 minutes. The speech of the Leader of the House in the Legislative Council, C. Ramachandraiah, lasted less than a minute. The highlight of the Budget was the attempt to woo government employees, who have been assured of an increase in pay. Mr Ramnarayana Reddy later told mediapersons that allocation for salaries would be `42,622 crore, an increase of about `8,000 crore from

Some Seemandhra ministers cornered Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday over the government ordering extra payments to be made to contractors who are building irrigation projects, and reportedly easing certain norms. The issue came up at the Cabinet meeting, called to approve the vote-onaccount budget for 2014-15. The PCC president handed
over a letter to the Chief Minister objecting to the government issuing the orders without first discussing it in the Cabinet. The payments had been recommended by a Cabinet sub-committee, but had not been discussed by the Cabinet. Mr Satyanarayana put the value of the payments, which were sought by the contractors citing hike in costs, at `15,000 crore. Mr Satyanarayana, accused chief secretary P.K. Mohanty of not informing to the ministers of the
orders. At one stage, Mr Satyanarayana said I will write to the Vigilance Commission, the chief secretary will be put behind bars. He said the outcome of passing the orders without first discussing it in the Cabinet would be that ministers may have to queue up before the CBI, as had happened in the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy illegal investments case. Ministers C. Ramachandraiah, Kondru Murali and Vatti Vasant
Kumar spoke up in support of Mr Satyanarayana. The ministers said they were not against the issuing of issue orders or the recommendations of the Cabinet sub-committee. The issue was that it was not discussed in the Cabinet. To Mr Satyanarayanas charge that the burden on the government would be `15,000 crore, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy clarified that the additional burden would be of the order of about `5,000 crore.
He said that the recommendations of the Cabinet sub-committee and the relevant files would be circulated to the ministers. To the ministers demand that the orders be kept in abeyance, the Chief Minister did not give any assurance but merely nodded. Minister Murali said the government should take action on officials who were misleading the government on irrigation projects. He said the government should sanction funds to the projects only after verifying
clearances. Mr Satyanarayana in his letter to the Chief Minister said major changes have been effected in the system as per the government orders issued by the irrigation department. A lot of facilities had been extended in favour of the contractors. He wrote that making the policy applicable with retrospective effect from April 1, 2013, has major financial implication. BRIEF
Though the vote-onaccount budget for the year 2014-15 was presented on Monday by state finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, the question is what will happen to the budget if the state is divided by the end of February or in March? How will the budget be distributed between the two states? According to financial department officials, there are three options if the state is divided before the next general elections. One option is to maintain a joint account by both states till new governments are formed after the election. The second option is that after the new governments are formed, both governments can pass their own vote-on-account budgets. The third option is issuing of ordinance by both governments on their own vote-on-account budget. Finance ministry officials say that such a situation had never arisen in the countrys history . No state had been divided just before an election. Both states could opt to maintain a joint account till the next general election. After Parliament approves the Telangana Bill, it will take some time to issue a notification on the appointed date of the new state. It is expected that the election notification will be issued in the fourth week of February or the first week of March. If so, there will be no time for both states to approve the vote-onaccount budgets after the new states are formed. The new states will have

In an unprecedented development, Telangana ministers boycotted the Cabinet meeting which was held to approve the vote-on-account Budget on Monday . The ministers were protesting Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy securing a resolution rejecting the Telangana Bill earlier this month. Minister Danam Nagendar had suggested that they could attend the Cabinet meet and walk out to record their protest over the Chief Ministers attitude towards Telangana, but he was overruled by Deputy CM Damodar Raja Narasimha and senior minister K. Venkata Ramana Reddy, who is from Telangana, and others lodged their protest with Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar for accepting the notice given by the CM and putting it to vote. The Speaker asked them to understand the situation and his position. TRS and CPM legislators walked out to register their protest. Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy, Mr Raja Narasimha and Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu skipped the BAC meeting. Telugu Desam leader P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju objected to the vote-on-account Budget being presented without the traditional Governors address. Finance minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy later clarified there was no need for the Governors address since the present Assembly session had not been prorogued.
An important feature in the state Budget was the projection of a moderate growth of 17 per cent in the states own revenues, which were pegged at `84,780 crore, including value added tax of `61,950 crore (18 per cent growth), excise of `8,625 crore (15 per cent) motor vehicle tax of `5,005 crore (15 per cent) and stamps and registration, `7,377 crore (15 per cent growth). In the non-tax revenue category, growth is projected as 5.64 per cent and mines and minerals is expected to generate `3,452 crore. Of the total outlay, the plan expenditure will be `67,950 crore and nonplan expenditure is pegged at `1,15,179 crore. The revenue surplus is `474 crore, while the fiscal deficit of `25,402 crore 2.6 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product is well within the limits of the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act. Earlier on Monday, all the ministers from Telangana stood up in the Assembly to protest against Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy for moving a resolution against the Telangana Bill in the last session. Several Congress members from Telangana, including the Chief Whip and two whips, trooped into the well of the House and raised slogans against the Chief Minister.
Six universities from Andhra Pradesh are among 77 universities across the country which figure in the NAAC certificate defaulters list released by the University Grants Commission. More than 12,000 metric tonne of garbage was lying along the 625km city roads on Monday as 25,000 contract workers and 7,000 Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation permanent employees continued the indefinite strike for the third constitutive day . Since Saturday, the workers have kept away from sweeping and garbage transportation activities as well as anti-larval operations, bill collection and horticulture activities. Nothing less than a salary of `10,000 per month will be accepted and the state government needs to release interim relief immediately for the contract workers, said the agitating workers. The strike was observed across the state. Eighteen of the GHMC circles, across five zones, were badly hit. Over 25,000 contract and outsourcing employees, including 20,000 sweepers, 1,500 transportation employees and 2,200 entomology wing employees kept away from civic duties. Vinay Kapoor, general secretary, Bhagyanagar Municipal Employees Union, said, When protests were held in October 2013 for the same demands, the GHMC commissioner had assured us that wages per month would be increase from `6,500 to `12,500 including health cards for contract employees. The GHMC authorities also formed a special committee to meet our demands with Somesh Kumar as the chairperson. The agitating workers were told that a decision will be taken in 15 days and
Garbage was left lying along the roads causing inconvenience to people as GHMC workers have gone on an indefinite strike. DC by December 2013, the wages will be increased. Four months have passed since then and so far there has been no information on salary increase. The strike entered its third day, yet none of the civic officials called workers for an interaction. G. Mallikarjun, a BMC member, said, Workers operate at the ground level and sickness will strike us first... health card is essential for us. We also served a strike notice to the commissioner on January 21 stating if the demands are not met, workers will go on strike for 15 days from January 21, however the notice was ignored. We demand an interim relief (27 per cent of basic pay) which were released for the GHMC permanent staff. The demands include accident insurance of `5 lakh, interim relief fund, health card for contract employees, regularisation of contract employees, procurement of garbage vehicles, providing houses to outsourcing employees in Rajiv Gruha Kalpa scheme.
With no assurance from the state government on increase in wages of GHMCs contract workers, who are currently on a strike, talks between minister for municipal administration and urban development and civic staff failed on Monday . A decision on the strike was to be taken by the MAUD head on February 11 after consulting the state finance department. Vinay Kapoor, general secretary of Bhagyanagar Municipal Corporation said, The strike will continue till our demands are met. We will not compromise. The government has not assured us of any hike in pay. The MAUD minister has agreed to give a 25 per cent hike, however only after he has discussed the matter with the state finance department. Till a
decision is reached, then no worker will attend to duty . Meanwhile, GHMC authorities were caught in their own trap. They had made alternate arrangements on February 9 to clear garbage and sweep roads by pressing into service 150 garbage clearing vehicles for each ward. The hired workers cleared garbage in Koti, Secunderabad station, Abids, Charminar, Kukatpally and claimed to have cleared 1,500 metric tons of garbage costing a bomb to GHMC. However, when striking unions checked weighing records at Jawaharnagar, the garbage cleared at these centres was only 170 metric tons. Tension gripped the GHMC head office at Liberty and 5 other zonal centres on Monday . Over 2,000 workers held protests leading to lathi charge and arrest of 6 lorries of protesters.

Several schools and colleges have already declared a holiday. Shops and commercial establishments are expected to function normally except at a few areas close to OU. Association. The organisations are opposing provisions of the T-Bill stipulating common admissions and quotas in education and jobs postbifurcation, besides giving powers to the Governor on crucial issues such as law and order. We have been fighting for separate Telangana state since over four years. The T-Bill has now passed all the hurdles and is all set to be tabled in Parliament. However, certain provi-
sions in T-Bill are highly objectionable, which amounts to making Hyderabad a Union Territory . This is not acceptable for us. We do not want Telangana state which is full of restrictions. We want a free Telangana state, where the democratically elected government should have all the powers like any other state in the country, said Pidamarthi Ravi of OUJAC, which has called for the bandh. Student leaders said if the admissions and quotas are continued for 10 years, there is no point in giving T-state as the stir started on the foundation of students losing job opportunities to people of the Seemandhra region.

Ever noticed someone pulling a fish pout, or a balloon face? That person is probably doing a bit of face yoga, the new exercise form that is catching up in the city Experts say face yoga gives the practitioner a natural way to look younger, exercises the facial muscles and is also a great stress buster. Face yoga, as the name indicates, works on the 57 muscles in the face and the neck. With the increase in working hours and stress, people lose out on the daily quota of eight hours of sleep. Poor food habits and stress result in early ageing of the skin and cause prominent wrinkles, explains Mansi Gulati, who has been teaching face yoga for over six years.

ago. Gone are the days of botox and surgeries. Hollywood actors like Jennifer Aniston, Anjelina Jolie and others have been practising this and the results have been very good, without any sideeffects, she said. Face yoga also achieves reduction of fat on the face, double chins and pimples. Face yoga has various exercises like the fish pout, lion face, owl face, puppet face, oval face, even balloon face, among others, to address specific face issues. Lakshmi Reddy, a beautician from the city, said, There are plenty of products in the market that help
the user maintain their skin, but many of them also come with side-effects. Facial yoga is natural, but will take a little longer. She added: It teaches you to become more aware of the facial muscles, so you can relax them Doctors caution that one must start slowly and never overdo the exercises to prevent muscles from getting stressed. Dr Minhaj Naseerabadi from Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda, said, These poses definitely help relax the muscles. We have three components in relaxation: one is to reduce anxiety by deep breathing, thinking about anything that is relaxing and third is to find out what is actually affecting a person. Dont overdo things and always start with a few seconds of exercise and do them as prescribed.

The bifurcation Bill would require only a simple majority . Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who was supposed to meet with the BJP top brass over dinner to enlist their support for the important Bills, has postponed it to February 12. A week after cash was stolen from the Muthoot Finance Corporation branch in the Zaheerabad mandal of Medak district, thieves entered their office at Trimulgherry in the city and made a futile attempt to break open the safe lockers in the strong room. However, they could not break it open and left. The incident which took place on Saturday night came to light on Sunday, when security personnel came to check the office. Inspector P. Ravi Kiran said on Saturday a gang entered the office on the first floor from the rear side of an adjacent commercial complex. Cops suspect that it could be the handiwork of a Bihari gang as it seems to be similar to the Zaheerabad case. The gang also left their tools on the adjacent building. We received information and rushed to the spot. We suspect that the gang had plans to return to make an attempt again as they left behind the tools. The cops registered a case and are examining CCTV footage from the surveillance camera. They are also checking up suspect gangs.
Three months after a 50-year-old woman was found murdered in her house at Rajendranagar, the police has arrested her son. Although, the police had suspected it to be a case of murder-robbery, the probe team found that K. Kishore, 24, killed his mother by hitting her with a boulder on her head to grab property . The victim, K. Chandrakala, was found dead in her house at Budvel, and her gold ornaments were missing. After her death, Kishore took over her properties, police said.

Doctors said that he will be shifted to the general ward from ICU in two days. Meanwhile, the police has taken three students into custody regarding the case. Two of the students, identified as Hemant and Suresh, are studying in MLR Engineering College. Relatives of Sravan Kumar
said that despite giving a statement to the police that he was subjected to ragging, the cops have not added the ragging section in the FIR. The students who saw the incident told us that he was called by the attackers for ragging. When we told this to the police they said they would add it after inquiry said Sravans cousin Vamshi. Sravans relatives also alleged that the college was trying to water down the case by saying it was just an altercation between the students. On Monday, the police
took the statement of Sravan, who told the police that the attackers tortured him openly . One of the attackers hit him on his private parts and abused him in obscene language, said his cousin Vamshi. Dundigal police Inspector Bhaskar said that investigation is on and that ragging would be added to the FIR once the victim gives a statement. Since he is doing third year, we are not sure whether it was ragging. If he gives a statement that he was ragged, we will include it in the FIR, he said.

SC/ST students of Osmania University are upset with the University Grants Commission for slashing the number of fellowships being awarded under the Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship Scheme for pursuing higher studies such as M.Phil. and Ph. D. According to the students, the UGC has been decreasing fellowships with each passing year since 2011, hitting the prospects of SC/ST students for pursuing higher studies. This is nothing but discrimination on the part of UGC towards SC/ST students. The UGC has decreased the fellowships by more than half since 2011 without giving any reasons. The state government should take up the issue with the Centre to protect the interests of SC/ST students, said School, Chaderghat. All the schools had submitted their salary bills long ago but the DEOs office has kept them pending for no valid reasons. With this, teachers are forced to run around the office to get their salaries. The lower-rung staff at DEO is demanding 10 per cent commission to approve the bills. We suspect the involvement of the DEO in this issue since without his
OUJAC leader Raju Nayak. While the UGC had granted 279 fellowships during 2011-12, it came down to 186 in 2012-13. This year, the fellowships further fell to 88, triggering protests from SC/ST students on campus. The students also found fault with the UGC for selecting only 10 departments out of a total of 54 to award fellowships this year. The scheme funded by the Union ministry of social justice & empowerment and ministry of tribal affairs, is open to SC/ST candidates who wish to pursue higher studies in regular category such as M.Phil. and Ph.D degrees in Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Engineering & Technology . There are 2,000 slots for SC and 667 slots for SC candidates every year for all subjects across the country . knowledge this cannot happen in his office. said T. Subba Reddy refuted these allegations saying that the salaries and other arrears were being released in a phased-manner after verifying all the records.

The bench was dealing with an interlocutory application moved by the ACB seeking permission to either to transfer or relieve to repatriate the officers to their parent units as they had completed their three-year deputation in the ACB. On April 16, 2012, the court had directed that no officer of the SIT involved in the investigations into the liquor business in Andhra Pradesh

Do you suffer from several attacks of severe malaria? It could be in your genes. New research claims that an individuals susceptibility to malaria may be determined by the presence of the variants of a specific gene. Moreover, the mutated gene is passed on to future generations. Scientists from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology have linked variants of a particular gene that, interestingly, is the first line of defence against disease-causing patho-gens. The gene MBL2 encodes a particular protein, Mannose Bi-nding Lectin, which forms the basis of im-munity . It is the first to identify a disease-causing pathogen when it attacks the human system. However, a mutation in the MBL2 gene decides the susceptibility of individuals to malaria. Researchers surveyed nearly a thousand malaria patients with different degrees of malaria intensity from various malaria endemic and normal regions in South India. Specific mutations were noticed in severe malaria patients and different ones in those with mild attack of malaria. The results have been published in the journal Infection and Immunity.
LEOPARD | FALL Leopard kills reported from Nizamabad, Warangal, Anantapur, Visakhapatnam
There have been no reports of man-eating leopards over the last decade, but as many as 22 leopards have been killed in the state, indicating how serious the problem of leopard-human conflicts is becoming. This figure does not include leopards that have been captured when they come in contact with humans. Leopard kills have been reported from Nizamabad, Warangal, Anantapur,
Chittoor, Visakhapatnam and the Godavari districts. Leopards were spotted on the outskirts of Hyderabad early last year. Though the state forest department responds well in trapping leopards that have entered human habitations and translocating them, there is little stress on collecting information on leopard conflict and on implementing the long-term solutions suggested by the Union forests ministry . According to the Central ministry, management of a
species should be based on systematic long-term data. To acquire this data, wild life activist Devidas Mangnani says, Long term research, focused on estimating the population and abundance of leopards in high conflict areas should be taken up on priority . Sarada Chaturvedula of the Wild Life Conservation Society says that research has shown that a large number of leopards can exist among a high density of humans, they can share the same land with mini-
mal conflict as long as the interventions that are carried out are appropriate. Research has shown that common people, staff of the forest, municipal administration and police departments and media must be involved to effectively manage such conflict situations, says Ms Chaturvedula. The Wild Life Conservation Society-India along with Hyticos along with the AP forest department plan to hold awareness campaigns.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwals proposed mohalla sabhas, part of the Delhi Nagar Swaraj Bill 2014 that comes up before the Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday, is on the lines of the Marxists dreaded local committees in West Bengal that over years had virtually turned into kangaroo courts. The CPMs local committees had become a law unto themselves and wielded tremendous clout. Nothing could take place in any area without the clearance of these local committees. From police to construction to landlord-tenant matters to domestic disputes, there was virtually nothing they didnt meddle in. In Delhi, the AAP wants to scrap the MLA funds scheme and wants mohalla sabhas to utilise it in their areas. If the Bill is cleared by his Cabinet, the government plans to introduce it with the Janlokpal Bill in the four-day special Assembly Session
In a seeming reference to the ongoing controversy over the Aam Aadmi Partys proposed Janlokpal Bill, President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday stated that the validity of a law is tested by the judiciary as defined in the Constitution. The prime function of the Parliament is to enact legislation to empower the people on every front social, economic and political, to exercise control over the executive and making it accountable in all respects. The validity of a law, whether Union or state, is tested by judiciary as defined in the Constitution, Mr Mukherjee stated at a function in the Parliaments Central Hall. The Presidents
comments assume significance as the Delhi government seems to be headed towards confrontation with the Centre over the Janlokpal Bill. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has been maintaining that he would table the Bill in the Delhi Assembly without taking permission from the Union home ministry He has sought withdrawal of a 12-year-old order that makes it mandatory for all Bills to be sent to the Centre before being tabled in the Delhi Assembly .

The dispute over invoking anti-piracy law against two Italians marines, accused of killing two Indian fishermen, will be adjudicated by the Supreme Court even as the Italian PM Enrico Letta said that Italy and the European Union will react to the issue of India charging the marines under the tough antipiracy law. An SC bench told the attorney general, Either the government decides on the issue or we will do it. The Italian PM on Monday tweeted The charge sought by Indian authorities is unacceptable. Italy and the European Union will react. His comments came after India said that the NIA, would prosecute marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone under the maritime security law SUA which carries death penalty. India last week removed the possibility of a death penalty but insisted the marines would still be prosecuted under the anti-piracy law. They face up to 10 years in jail.
Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have concluded that 18-yearold Nido Taniam died of injuries on his face and head caused by a blunt object. Doctors had been waiting for the viscera report of the Nido before coming up with their final conclusion on the cause of death. The viscera had been sent for examination as the doctors had wanted to rule out the possibility of a drug overdose/poisoning as the cause of death. The initial post mortem report had not revealed much injury or aberration on his body . The preliminary report was inconclusive as we did not find enough injuries that could have caused his death. Dr Sudhir Gupta, the head of department for forensic medicine AIIMS, said However, after ruling out poisoning/drug overdose, we have come to the conclusion that the internal injuries both on his head and face proved fatal for the illfated boy, he added.
In yet another assault on people from northeastern region, two Manipuri youth were allegedly beaten up with iron rods on Sunday by unidentified assailants in Ambedkar Nagar area of southeast Delhi. The Congress and NCP on Monday finalised a seat sharing arrangement in Maharashtra for the Lok Sabha polls deciding to contest 26 and 22 seats respectively, days after NCP leaders had made statements that appeared to be soft on Narendra Modi. The two parties had contested the last Lok Sabha polls under the same formula in the state. The announcement was made by NCP leader and Union Minister Praful Patel and Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan after hour-long talks between the two sides at NCP chief Sharad Pawar's residence. Further talks will take place soon, the two leaders said when asked about reports that the two parties planned to swap some seats. The agreement comes in the midst of a series of statements by Patel and Pawar on Modi that led to speculation about NCPs ties with Congress. They also brushed aside questions on the Kolhapur seat which had become the bone of contention. People from Northeast India, with their distinctive East Asian features, have long been victims of racism in Indian cities and perpetrators of similar crimes in their own states. The death of an Arunachal student has blown the lid off the silence on the twin issues.
t was the rarest of spectacles, an alignment of political stars that no astrologer could have predicted: Rahul Gandhi, Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal, all lending their support to a single agitation. Even more unexpectedly, the agitation in question was one being staged by students from Indias Northeast region. For decades now, that region and the mainland of India (to which it is connected tenuously by a land corridor 22 kilometres wide at its narrowest point) have had a troubled relationship. Differences in culture, religion and food habits, and even in physical appearances, have deepened the sense of alienation felt by many from the region who made the journey to Indias bustling metropolises in search of education or jobs. It was his appearance that sparked off the fight that seems to have led to the tragic death of Nido Tania, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, in Delhis Lajpat Nagar. Police records and the testimony of his friends show that Tania was severely beaten up by a group of youth after he broke a shops display window. He had stopped to ask for directions, and been met with a racist taunt, which infuriated him. Such taunts are par for the course, says Nicholas Kharkongor, a writer and director of mixed Naga and Khasi descent who lives in Delhi. Hes been in Delhi and Mumbai for 20 years now, and has learnt to blank out these taunts, he says. His forbearance has meant that he has not found himself in any sort of extreme situation. If in a place you have a singular exotica, a few people from elsewhere, you will be nice to them. If there are a lot, fascination will give way to xenophobia. Delhi has a huge Northeastern population, he says. The size of this population came into notice in 2012 after rumours circulating on SMS sparked off an exodus of people from the region who live and work in cities such as Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru. The incident drew the attention of
Prof Sanjib Baruah, an authority on the region who teaches at Bard College in New York. In a paper for the January 2013 issue of Himal Southasian, Prof Baruah noted the presence of at least 2 lakh Northeasterners in Delhi. In an email interview, he wrote that while he was very disturbed by the Tania incident, he saw a silver lining. I am glad that Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi went to the protests. The political establishment appears to be taking this incident more seriously than previous racial incidents. I hope the discussion leads to the recognition of such crimes as hate crimes, he wrote.
Watershed moment
These protests could prove to be a watershed moment given the recognition from all major political parties that there is racial discrimination being faced by some Indians in India, a fact that has long been ignored or denied. It is also a watershed moment in the very vocal identification by the protesters from the Northeast of themselves as Indians. The region has been home to numerous separatist insurgencies down the decades since 1947, and the Indian identity was not something everyone from the region sported easily . Borkung Hrangkhawl, a rap musician from Tripura who lives in Delhi, is the son of a legendary insurgent leader from the state, Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl. His father gave up the gun after 10 years of armed struggle, in 1988, and took to politics. Asked whether he feels Indian, Borkung paused for a moment to say that it was a loaded question before answering yes. A lot of us dont feel Indian, says Kharkongor, but adds that he is not among those. I feel very Indian, he says. Prof Baruah, who authored a seminal text called India Against Itself on the politics of nationality, says, Northeasterners are seeking integration as equal citizens, which is not the

same as assimilation. The younger generation of writers, thinkers and musicians from the region seem to agree with this view. Ankush Saikia, an author who divides his time between Tezpur and Shillong and lived in Delhi earlier, says focusing on differences rather than factors that bring us together is harmful for everyone in the long run. He agrees that it is a difficult and complex matter, and says, We need to look at the treatment of people from outside the Northeast in the Northeast itself, and the many opportunities available to and availed by people from the Northeast in the rest of India. Perhaps the worst sufferers of the periodic bouts of violence against outsiders have been the Bengali minority who scattered throughout the Northeast for generations. Sonali Dutta, who now lives in the United Kingdom, recalls an incident from her college days in Shillong. It was during Durga Puja and I was walking back home from the pandal with my boyfriend just after dusk. As we approached a quiet, poorly lit stretch on the street leading down to my house, six Khasi boys surrounded us. One of them exposed a knife in his inner leather jacket pocket. While they were busy punching and kicking my boyfriend along with profuse racial verbal abuses, I managed to slip out of their circle to look for help. In the meantime, my boyfriend broke out of their loop, caught my hand and yelled, run! I threw my handbag and we ran for our lives. Theres a sense of xenophobia in the Northeast, says Kharkongor. It needs to goI dont know what can be done about it, he says. The situation there is more grim, he adds. Bridges need to be built between this region and the rest of the country so that there can be understanding and interaction, and ultimately, mutual respect, says Mitra Phukan, the Assambased president of the Northeast Writers Forum. Mary Therese Kurkalang, director of the Cultures of Peace Festival, is at the forefront of efforts to build such bridges. She left Shillong to live in Delhi in 1998 and has been there since. I consciously choose to live in Indias capital that is not always known for being kind to women or minorities or to anyone at many and various levels, she says, adding, There is also much that this city offers. I came to this city with `5,000, a suitcase full of synthetic clothes, a Class 12 Pass certificate, and a great deal of hope! After 16 years, I can look back and say, Delhi you didnt let me down! I run a company of my own, know thousands of people (and not just on social media), I have a wonderful Punjabi landlady in whose flat I have lived for 11 years running! I celebrate Christmas, Id and Diwali with equal gusto. So every now and then, if someone asks me aap kahaan se ho, I patiently explain to them where Shillong is, starting from Kolkata, then to Assam and a 100 kilometres up to Shillong the capital of Meghalaya the abode of clouds where perhaps a bit of me always floats.
There is a great deal of racism within the region known as Indias Northeast also. This is generally not discussed. Communities regard each other with suspicion, which degenerates into hatred and violence at times. Mitra Phukan NE Writers Forum

In
a country steeped in prejudices, dealing with discrimination will take many things
t a discussion on Doordarshan in the studio at Mandi House in New Delhi on Friday, several students and professionals from the Northeast spoke with anger and sadness about the discrimination they face on a daily level. Words which are barred by court edicts such as Chinky still remain in common use, filling them with anger, but also a sense of despair. That they continue to work, study and live in metros like Delhi redounds to their credit and to the citys shame. This issue is not unique to the region or its people; they live in a country and societies steeped in prejudice, where Dalits, women, religious minorities and tribals are constant targets of violence, abuse and harm; this is happening as communities and
individuals rise against the repressive behaviour that has characterised social conduct for centuries. This is the broader narrative in which the sporadic violence and daily abuse against so many of those from the Northeast takes place. What is important to recognise is that so many of them are speaking out courageously, mobilising and standing for their rights. Yet, few turn to the state for succour or protection. A survey conducted recently by my Centre on challenges faced by women from the region in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Calcutta says that few of the women who faced molestation, harassment, humiliation or intimidation of any kind wanted to go to the police for help. Many said they did not think it would be of any use while others said they didnt want to be further humiliated. This stinging perception of law enforcers underlines a
Students from Indias Northeast and their supporters hold placards during a protest in New Delhi SS basic principle: that police forces in metropolitan cities must be more representative of demography and sensitive to concerns of different ethnic, religious and language groups, not the local majority. Thus, while behavioural change is crucial, it will take time. So does changing laws. But, recruitment rules can be changed, as can retraining police. One way of dealing with ignorance on an issue like this is to spread knowledge, especially through curricula in schools, colleges and universities. The school and university networks need to do this
rigourously. Too many committees have written on these issues; very little has been implemented. This is not going to be an easy task. Take the case of the United States: there was a time there when the pejorative ni**er word was used extensively when referring to AfroAmericans. Anyone who uses it these days there runs the risk of being hustled away by police and a jail term for racial abuse. It took decades for this to happen, to upturn peoples views, to end segregation in the land of the free and the brave. It took courageous men and women to do that, black and white, who braved police batons and dogs leaders like Martin Luther King, who held no office as he pursued his dream of freedom and equality, and fell to an assassins bullet. Presidents and politicians supported him as did cultural icons like Pete Seeger. Laws were necessary
to end discrimination, but this couldnt happen in isolation without a robust human rights movement, the role of media and educators. For times, tides and attitudes to change, the democratic deficit can be bridged with a combination of the power of justice and the widest dissemination of cultural, historic and social knowledge. There must be the sure understanding that the use of the word Chinky can mean jail. Use the Prevention of Atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act. We shall overcome, but not by soft power alone: meet the sting of discrimination with the full force of the law. I never felt that I stood out for my chinkiness in my place of work, and being one of the few English speakers in my hostel and being very social, my chinkiness never came in the way of making friends with other young women. Mary Kurkalang Entrepreneur

Melbourne: More than 30 homes have been razed in the worst fire conditions Australia has seen since a 2009 inferno killed 173 people, with flames threatening the country's second-largest city, officials said on Monday. Hot, dry winds and soaring temperatures fanned scores of major blazes across the southeast on Sunday, with Victoria state sweltering through its worst fire risk in five years.

Forecasters at the Met Office said the run of winter storms, which have brought heavy rain and strong winds and seen high waves batter the English coastline, has been exceptional in its duration. But there has been a growing tide of criticism at the official response, which has erupted into a full-blown political row. Many people in Somerset, one of the hardesthit counties in the southwest, blame the devastating floods on the failure of the EA, a government body, to dredge local rivers. Communities minister Eric Pickles joined the attack on Sunday, suggesting the government perhaps relied too much on the EAs advice on flooding. AFP

I was shocked by the report Student, 21, attempts suicide after ragging (February 10). Suicide is a major problem in many colleges. But college managements and the government are not doing anything to tackle this. Without strong action, the problem of ragging cannot be stopped. I request all educators and the authorities to take suicide prevention measures.

he end of the Maruti 800 product line represents the end of an era much as the entry of the Japanese car into India in 1983 marked the beginning of a memorable time for the Indian automobile. When the no-frills Maruti 800 burst upon the scene as the much-vaunted small car of Sanjay Gandhis dream, it represented a breakthrough. The worlds technology had first come in a tiny package to India, but it quickly sounded the death knell of the monopoly of Indian cars based on ancient technologies sustained by socialist ideologies and xenophobia. The opening of doors saw the Indian automobile industry leapfrog into the modern age. Today Indias roads are unrecognisable from what they were just 30 years ago. The Maruti 800 first wiped out the need to visit roadside mechanics every other day to keep the automobile going. Today, all the worlds leading automobile manufacturers are here, besides the marquee names. Significantly, they are all producing cars on Indian assembly lines with close to 80 per cent indigenisation. We suffer now from a surfeit of choice constrained only by what the individual can afford. Critics can slam the selfishness of personal transportation as opposed to mass public transport, but the Maruti 800 did bring the world to India. For that, Suzuki owes a debt of gratitude. It is with a tinge of nostalgia that we bid goodbye to the Maruti 800 although many of the three million cars will be on the roads for a long time to come. DECCAN CHRONICLE

he anger and outrage of ordinary people against the incumbent UPA-II regime headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a consequence of many factors. Of these factors, an important one is the growing inequality in the country. India was always a country of contrasts, of huge differences between classes. But these yawning gaps in income and wealth have been widened by persistently high food inflation and the sluggish growth of employment opportunities. It may be factually incorrect to argue that the rich have become richer while the poor have become poorer. But what cannot be denied is that the speed at which the upper echelons of Indian society have become richer is very much faster than the pace at which the real incomes (that is, the earnings of a household after adjusting for inflation) of not just the poor, but the middle classes as well, have grown in recent years. Across the world, even super-rich individuals and the very-powerful elites are expressing concern about the rising gap between the rich and the poor. In India, however, most politicians in the ruling party are reluctant to concede that the governments economic policies have failed to bridge rather, contributed to the yawning divide between the affluent and the underclasses. For this failure, the incumbent regime will almost certainly pay a stiff political price in the coming general elections. In a rather belated (and almost reluctant) admission on December 24, finance minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said:
There is no easy solution to taming food inflation. There are no quick fixes to taming inflation. I am afraid it will take some time to contain this inflation. We are paying a political price for that and I acknowledge that, but those are the facts... The government takes pride in stating that over the last decade Indias gross domestic product has grown faster than ever before even if the rate of growth of the economy has decelerated to between 4.5 and 5 per cent over the last couple of years. This slowdown has come after the countrys GDP expanded by nearly nine per cent for four years in succession for the first time ever, between 2004 and 2008. Official spokespersons keep talking about how government policies have brought about inclusive growth and how its welfare schemes including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, farm loan waiver and the food security programme have put more money in the hands of the poor, particularly those who live in rural areas. What they dont tell you is that food inflation and corruption has eroded a substantial part of the gains that were to accrue to the underprivileged. What is also not talked about is extremely tardy rate of growth of job creation. The latest data put out in a survey conducted by the governments National Sample Survey Organisation indicate that the annual rate of growth of employment between 1999-2000 and 2011-12 was just 2.2 per cent per year over this decade, which is supposed to have witnessed impressive
and unprecedented economic growth. A December 2012 paper, titled Joblessness and Informalisation: Challenges to Inclusive Growth in India and prepared by the Institute of Applied Manpower Research, an organisation under the Planning Commission, observed: One of the most disturbing numbers that the 2009-10 employment-unemployment National Sample Survey data show is the addition of merely 2.76 million work opportunities during the period of fastest growth for the economy... Compared to this, there was an addition of 60 million to the workforce during 19992000 and 2004-05. In May 2006, a report of the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector headed by the late Arjun Sengupta had claimed that 78 per cent of those who work in the unorganised sector in India live on `20 a day or less. This finding raised a hue and cry. Immediately a large number of sarkari economists questioned the reports methodology and authenticity of its data. In December 2008, an expert group headed by the former head of the Prime Ministers Economic Advisory Council, the late Suresh Tendulkar, estimated that roughly a quarter of the countrys urban population lives on `19 a day, while close to 42 per cent of the rural population consumes goods and services roughly worth `15 a day. When the Planning Commission put out this data in a report to the Supreme Court, it became a target of ridicule by social activists and the govern-

ments political opponents. Many in the government are supposed to be quite in favour of the prescriptions of the International Monetary Fund. Heres what Christine Lagarde, managing director of the IMF, said on February 4, while delivering the Richard Dimbleby lecture in London: In India, the net worth of the billionaire community increased 12-fold in 15 years, enough to eliminate absolute poverty in this country twice over. Widening income disparity became a prominent topic of discussion at the annual meeting of some of the worlds most affluent and powerful individuals at Davos in Switzerland. As a report by Bloomberg put it: Failure to narrow the gap risks robbing economies of demand and threatens banks and big businesses with political and regulatory backlashes if voters rebel at squeezed wages. A poll of Bloomberg subscribers... found 58 per cent view income disparity as a brake on economic growth, with 68 per cent urging governments to confront the problem. It is often argued that economic growth invariably results in widening inequality and that poverty cannot be alleviated without growth. The debate between Amartya Sen and Jagdish Bhagwati on the relative importance of growth and re-distribution has been discussed to death. But what we in India often tend to ignore are a few irrefutable facts: there are enough studies today that indicate that inequality in India is not merely higher than it is in China but possibly in certain Latin American countries as well. Moreover, traditionally unequal countries like Mexico, Brazil and Chile have been far more successful than India has been in reducing poverty and social inequality. A composite education
any years ago, at a gathering of friends, I met a well-known Urdu writer. At some point during the conversation, he told us that while he wrote in Urdu, his first language was Gujarati. It was a pleasant surprise for everyone, and while we were still remarking on it, he spoke up again, quite vehemently, about how much he hated Gujarati as a language, and how ugly it sounded to him. For a writer to denigrate any language, but especially ones mother tongue, was an unconscionable thing to do, and we all sat in stunned silence during this completely gratuitous tirade. I had particular occasion to recall the incident again almost a decade later, when, researching the history of the Urdu language, I read about the poet Sheikh Khub Muhammad Chishti (d. 1614 CE), and other scholars from Gujarat, who had fused the local Gujarati language with terms and concepts borrowed from Persian and Arabic mystical texts, to create a new literary idiom, that later came to be known as Gujari Urdu. Chishtis masnavi, Khub Tarang (1578 CE), written in Gujari Urdu, is considered one of the pivotal
texts in the history of Urdu language. The Gujarati language and its beautiful rhythms lie at the foundations of Urdu. A similar case can be made for all the languages spoken in our region. We are heirs to a composite linguistic identity. No one language is disconnected from the rest. We disregard and play favourites with languages at our own peril. Recently, it was time again to recall all this. During the last few months, I have been visiting schools to introduce the titles from my newly launched publishing house Kitab through interactive storytelling from these books. As the books are aimed at a readership from age groups five to 16plus, I get to interact with various age groups, from very young children to teenagers. I now do the storytelling entirely in Urdu, even from the books which I have written originally in English, as I have witnessed that the children connect with storytelling in Urdu far better than they do when the same story is told to them in English. As a storyteller, too, I enjoy it more. During these visits I have also had an opportunity to discuss the concerns the teachers and educa-
tionists have about developing literacy and good reading habits. Every single school teacher and educationist I have spoken to is keen to see the children develop literacy and proficiency in both English and Urdu. They are enthusiastic and devoted to their students, and it has been an education for me personally to meet these highly motivated individuals in a society which in recent times has not put too high a value on the institution of the teacher. The encounters with the parents have been less uniform, unfortunately. There are numerous dedicated parents who invest not only their financial resources, but also personal time, in helping develop literacy in their children, and in making sure that they do not become alienated from the languages spoken around them. But there is a large enough number of parents who wish to see the schools prioritise English language literacy above any other language. They do not care if their children get bad grades in Urdu, as long as they get good grades in English. I have myself witnessed such par-
ents snatch away Urdu-language storybooks, which their children had themselves chosen to read, and thrust English-language storybooks into their hands. I have seen them challenge their children to read the Urdu books they have chosen, and mock them when they stumble at a single word, using it as an excuse to take it from their hands and make them choose an English-language book instead. And I have seen the devastated and incomprehensible look on the faces of children too young to understand what had just happened. Such hostility from parents towards a particular language not only adversely affects a childs relationship with that language alone, it impacts his or her relationship with all languages, because it is not a hostile act against one particular language, but one against language. While our educationists need to assert themselves more in designing policies that are not swayed by the destructive preferences and prejudices of some parents, it would help them neutralise the misguided obsession with one language, if they begin introducing works from our rich
classical literature through the curriculum. Our classical works, such as the Heer Ranjha of Waris Shah, and the Risalo of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, are repositories of our linguistic heritage, and vibrant with the rhythms of the regions. As the children become engaged with these works, they will become engaged with the languages which have fashioned them. It will make them familiar with geography in a new way, through literary references, and it will eliminate the sense of alienation with their surroundings. It is very likely that the sense of attachment for languages, which stories inevitably create, will slowly give way to interest in locally spoken languages, and they may one day become curious to learn the language in which a tale they loved was first written. I for one would have blind faith in any education policy which that generation of children will create for their own. e are i n t h e centenar y year o f World War I. A torrent of commemorations and commentaries is pouring out in the news media on international security in 1914 and 2014. The central thought overhanging this surge of opinions about the Great War is whether lessons from that tragic conflict, which cost over 37 million lives, have been learnt or forgotten. Are we wiser with hindsight to avert arms races and strategic brinkmanship that plunged humanity in 1914 into what H.G. Wells ironically called the war that will end all wars? Far from remaining a fanciful academic exercise, policymakers have jumped into the fray of drawing historical analogies between the international conditions on the eve of World War I and the current state of play. Japans Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, set off a firestorm last month by warning against military expansion in Asia and comparing contemporary relations between China and Japan with those between Germany and Britain before the breakout of World War I. The parallel was striking because China and Japan are presently engaged in a tense standoff over historical wrongs and contested territories. They are building up their military muscle with a wary eye on each others capabilities and intentions. Narrow nationalism, which has stoked anti-Japanese sentiment in China and fear of Chinese hegemony in Japan, is also on the rise and hardening stereotypes on both sides. Like Germany and Britain one hundred years ago, China and Japan are two of the most powerful economies of our times. They are heavyweights wielding enormous material resources and surpluses, capable of enlisting influential foreign allies from their respective camps if their cold face-off escalates into a hot war. A Sino-Japanese war today will be far more global and devastating than the first Sino-Japanese war of 1894 over Korea, which did not spiral into a wider planetary conflict. The insecurity experienced by British elites at the turn of the 20th Century vis--vis Germanys expanding naval fleet and Kaiser Wilhelms challenge to the formers colonial possessions has eerie parallels to Chinese anxieties about Prime Minister Abes normalisation of Japan as a military power. Should
Japan continue shedding its pacifist constitution and bolstering its fighting capacities, the already alarming increase in Chinese defence expenditure will skyrocket in order to sustain Beijings vast lead in conventional and nuclear superiority over its Asian neighbours. All it takes in such a trigger-ready ambience is one incident that can set off a mad frenzy. If the assassination of an Archduke of Austria was the spark that set off World War I, a collision between Chinese and Japanese vessels in the East China Sea or of Chinese and Japanese fighter jets in Chinas provocative Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) could be the immediate cause of World War III. Prime Minister Abe is a keen student of history. He made the 1914 parallel after pondering over how high levels of economic interdependence between Germany and Britain could not

deter war between them. The trade and investment volumes achieved between these two European powers prior to World War I were record-breaking for that era and were part and parcel of what historians call the first age of globalisation from 1880 to 1913. Yet, the strategic dilemmas and nationalistic paranoia triumphed over rational economic logic. Could the same happen to China and Japan today, which has an average annual bilateral trade of over $350 billion? In 1909, the British intellectual Norman Angell wrote a seminal work titled The Great Illusion, arguing that war between industrialised great powers of Europe was futile and illogical because it would derail the gravy train of economic interdependence and impose unbearable losses on the protagonists. Although Angell did not predict that countries enjoying robust economic partnership would avoid war, his normative prescription was that they ought to avoid it for the sake of the symbiotic economic stakes binding them. Sadly, Germany and Britain (as well as their respective allies) fell for the great illusion that conquest and
territorial aggrandisement were beneficial and dragged humanity into a terribly costly war. Are China and Japan following suit now by abandoning their intertwined economic fates and allowing inflamed patriotic passions and emotions to prevail over cold reasoning? The Chinese government reacted vehemently to Prime Minister Abes 1914 reminiscences by countering that Japan is trying to obfuscate the crimes it committed just before and during World War II (1939-1945) by harking to an earlier World War. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi insisted that a more relevant history lesson was Japans aggression against China and other Asian countries from the 1930s onward. As if in repartee to Chinas attempt to shift the historical quarrel from World War I to World War II, the President of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino, has exhorted Western powers to forestall Chinas Nazi-style aggression against Southeast Asian neighbours. In comments that caught global attention, President Aquino urged his Western allies to firmly resist Chinese military expansion and bullying in Southeast Asia and save relatively weak nations like the Philippines from being gobbled up the way Adolf Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia in 1938. To President Aquino, the acquiescence by the US and other international actors to Chinas forcible occupation of the disputed Scarborough Shoal in 2012 is a reminder of British and French policies of appeasement of Hitler that only whetted his insatiable appetite for more land and culminated in World War II. Chinas unrealistic claims like the cows tongue line in Southeast Asian territorial waters, and revisionist maps showing a Greater China of imperial legacy do carry troubling shades of Hitlers lebensraum strategy of seeking spaces for Germanys natural development. Even as a plethora of intra-state wars rage across the world from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan to Colombia and the Congo, classic inter-state wars are becoming rare in the 21st century. Destructive energies of nationalistic elites have been channelled into financing and arming proxies in so-called internal civil wars. Yet, the chance of direct war between major powers cannot be ruled out with confidence due to the earthshaking power transition happening from West and East. If we have entered the Asian century, the need of the hour is to nurture cooperative regional institutional mechanisms to forestall todays Asia from repeating the follies of Europe of either 1914 or 1939. ave you ever wanted to know how dictators stay in power? Try visiting a comedy club. I went to one the other night. The acts varied in quality. No one died on their backside, no one stormed it, the audience went away happy. But at a couple of points the thing happened, the thing that gives you a clue about dictators: the comedian picked on a member of the audience. In fairness they were both minor examples. One was the compre assessing how a line had gone down. Two guys in their fifties sitting at the side had laughed. Wow, even you two liked that, said the compre. Look at you, Waldorf and Statler there. Everyone laughed, including Waldorf and Statler, and the evening moved on. Later, a comedian commented on how people were dressed, including one guy in the front row whose checked shirt gave him the Brokeback Mountain look. Again, it got a laugh, no more was made of it. But you should have seen the people nearby. Their body lan-

guage said everything: tense shoulders, sideways glances at Checked Shirt lest a full turning of the head draw the comedians attention to them instead, laughs more nervous than everyone elses. Because thats what happens when someone gets picked on: the rest of the audience breathes a sigh of relief that its not them, and settle down to enjoy the spectacle. Only when those sitting near the victim become sure theyre not going to get picked on too can they settle down as well. But boy, when they do The audience becomes a single mass. The victim has to sit there and join in, of course. But dont lets kid ourselves whats going on here: its bullying. Seeing an audience behave like this youre struck by just how powerful the herd instinct is. It doesnt seem to matter which herd you belong to its just enough that it is a herd, and someone is outside it. Their status as a non-member makes your membership all the more life-affirming. Its this instinct that dictators mine to such great effect. I should point out that Im not talking about every act of comedian-on-punter aggression. Sometimes its started by the punter himself, with a heckle, and after that he deserves everything he gets. Stephen K. Amos greets unsuccessful heckles with: You hear that silence? That was yours. You hear that laugh? That was mine. Some heckles do hit the spot, a sign of the two-way tension inherent in any worthwhile evening of comedy. During his short and ill-advised stand-up career, Michael Douglass half-brother Eric once appeared at a London club. Annoyed by the audiences lack of enthusiasm he shouted: You cant treat me like this! Im Kirk Douglass son! Someone at the back stood up and replied: No, Im Kirk Douglass son. Soon the whole audience was on its feet reciting the line. What I am talking about is the gratuitous lets pick on someone in the audience merchant. Often its the compre, who doesnt have
time to do a full routine. Mocking an unfortunate in the third row is a cheap and easy way of uniting the audience, getting the evening running. Thats why the comedian so often asks what the person does for a living a lot of people are going to say lawyer, civil servant, estate agent, or some other job for which the act has prepared put-downs. Plenty of us do jobs were not proud of as a way of paying the rent. Some of the people sitting around that victim, laughing at the 19th lawyer joke, will be lawyers themselves. But they dont care: theyre just glad to be the lawyer that wasnt picked on. Perhaps, even, their laughter is repressed selfloathing? Whatever, the herd begins to bay. The compres work is done. Some acts go further, employing victimisation as a major part of their routine. Michael Barrymore used to physically eject people from the venue. Dame Edna, meanwhile (currently on her farewell tour), often gets people up on stage and humiliates them in all sorts of inventive ways, for instance forcing them to phone a friend or acquaintance then commentating on the conversation. Her shows have become famous in theatreland as the only ones that sell out from the back. But they do sell out proving that while people dont want to be the victim, they do want to see someone victimised. Clearly its a long step from the Comedy Store on a Friday night to 1930s Berlin, and Im not for a second saying that comedians who use this sort of approach are Saddams in the making. Rather, its the audiences role that intrigues me. All that is required for evil to flourish, Edmund Burke tells us, is that good men do nothing. Very often nothing is precisely what they do. But why? Something to ponder the next time you find yourself two rows away from the guy whos just told the comedian hes an accountant. By arrangement with the Spectator

ego thus: The ghost of ego is born amidst forms. It lives in form, thrives on form, drops one form and takes on another form continuously, but runs away at the time of inquiry into itself. At the time of self-inquiry, it is understood that ego has no form of its own. It is a superimposed reality that cannot remain when the true nature of the self is known. Ego or ahankara is a sense of individuality rising from ones identification with something or the other. It expresses itself as I am a human being (identification with the species), I am fat (identification with the body), I am restless (identification with the mind), I am his wife (identification with relationships), and so on. Ego changes form continually. Its like I give up one job and take up another; I leave one city and go to live in another I am always changing identifications. When we
are identified with a limited or a finite field, we remain limited or finite. When a person says, I am now a millionaire, his status might change, but he remains a finite and limited being. In the normal sense, a person may not have superiority or inferiority complex, yet his/ her sense of individuality creates a limitation. S/he wants to acquire and enjoy more because of this sense of being less or limited. As a result, conflicts arise. If I think I have less than others, I feel jealous. If I think I have more than others, arrogance rises. If I want something and dont get it, I become depressed. Jealousy, arrogance and depression are all indications of limitedness, and they lead to sorrow. When I say, I can only do this, but not that, I am limiting my capabilities. In finitude, there is no happiness. In arrogance, one may think, I
am the best, but this will give way to jealousy and sorrow when one realises that there are people who are much superior. People often refuse to accept their mistakes or apologise because of their ego. Sometimes we harm someone and refuse to apologise, but seek forgiveness from God. God, forgive me for doing harm to him, is our prayer. Why not apologise to that person? If you mistreat your servant, your ego prevents you from apologising: He is my servant. How can I apologise to my own servant? Our limited identifications lead to likes and dislikes, and problems. Thus all our problems boil down to one thing our ego. How do we overcome our ego? I shall discuss that in my next column. Swami Tejomayananda head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide, is an orator, poet, singer, composer and storyteller. Australian destroyer sinks: Heavy casualties feared
Canberra, Feb. 11 The Australian destroyer Voyager sank with 300 men aboard early today, after a collision with the 19,000-ton aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, off the coast of New South Wales, the Navy department announced. There are casualties. We are still determining how many, a Navy spokesman said. A reliable source said that heavy loss of life was feared. Seas were calm at the time of the collision, and the southern summer evening was warm, the spokesman said. Three hours elapsed between the first report of the collision, and the sinking. Navy sources said that this time lag and the help available from other ships in the area should have helped to keep the casualties light.

New Delhi, Feb. 10 The United States will announce a trade enforcement action linked to India, potentially dealing another blow to bilateral relations damagedin December by the arrest and stripsearch of an Indian consul. US Trade Representative Michael Froman will hold a news conference, his office said. It said it could offer no additional details. It was not clear what the action related to, but the US Government has come under growing pressure to react to perceivedintellectual property rights abuses by Indian drug companies. Initially, the couple started selling home supplies such as bedsheets, dhurries, wall hangers etc from Ahmedabad and Jaipur artisans. The biggest hiccup was to build trust among sellers and buyers, recalls Manoj, who sources wares directly from artisans charging only a flat 20 per cent commission on sales avoiding middlemen. However, due to his wifes efforts through her NGO affiliation, the duo managed to win over women artisans. Today over 65 per cent of sellers in our site are women, said the founder of Craftsvilla that sells over two lakh products from 3000-plus sellers. Indian government on Monday expressed serious concerns over US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) imposing import ban on drugs from Indian generic companies, including Ranbaxy. India told the visiting USFDA commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg that making affordable drugs does not mean they are spurious. India made it clear to the USFDA that it believes that its pharma companies were being subjected to dispropor-
tionate penalties in some instances. Ms Hamburg, who is on a visit to India had meetings with commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma and health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. With regard to the quality of medicines, which are being produced in India, what has been said is very clear, considering the fact that such high number of filings are from India the highest perhaps after the US. Therefore, that is recognition of the fact that what we are not only beneficial but also bring value and strength, said Mr Sharma.

As public sector bank employees started a twoday strike on Monday seeking higher wages, finance minister P. Chidambaram said the profit of banks cannot be used only to enhance salaries because there are other obligations. I will appeal to employees and officers of banks to recognise that banks profits, banks earnings have other claims. While claims of officers, staff and employees must be duly acknowledged, and a fair and just (wage) settlement is arrived at, there are other claimants to banks' profit, he said.
Mr Chidambaram, speaking at the 78th foundation day of Indian Overseas Bank he said banks are obliged to declare a dividend, both to the majority owner of the bank and the other shareholders. Part of retained earnings has to be infused as capital in the bank for
furthering its business, he added. Reacting to Mr Chidambarams statement, Mr Vishwas Utagi vice-president All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) questioned whether profits are only for making provisions for non-performing assets and corporate debt
restructuring? He said in the last five years banks have provided `140,266 crore towards bad loans from the profits, while in the last six years `141,294 crores of bad loans have been written off. But when it comes to our salary revision, managements are reluctant. Meanwhile he said 10 lakh bank employees from public sector banks, 8 foreign banks and 18 old private sector banks where they have their unions went on a two-day strike from Monday. The AIBEA said the strike has been a total success. Banking transactions including clearing operations were paralysed and normal banking services were disrupted.
Tata Motors on Monday posted a 195 per cent growth in its net profit for the quarter ended December 2013 aided by strong growth in demand for its luxury segment Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The company reported a consolidated net profit after tax (PAT) of `4,805 crore during the period as compared to `1,628 crore reported during the same period last year. However, the companys standalone domestic operation continued with its lacklustre performance due to the weak macro-economic environment and subdued consumer sentiments that impacted the companys commercial and passenger vehicle segment. The auto major reported a profit after tax (PAT) of `1,251 crore, contributed by a one time profit of `1,948 crore on account of the restructuring it undertook in its overseas subsidiary and an additional amount of `600 crore by way of tax credit. The standalone performance remained worse during the quarter. The PAT of `1,251 crore was on account of restructuring initiative, said the company.

Fulhams Steve Sidwell (centre) celebrates with teammates after scoring against Manchester United during their English Premier League match at the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester on Sunday. The match ended 2-2. AP possession and camping around the visitors area. They finally made the breakthrough when Robin van Persie tapped in from Juan Matas cross with 12 minutes left and Michael Carrick scored with a deflected shot just over a minute later. But after David de Gea could only push Kieran Richardsons shot into the air, Darren Bent headed in Fulhams equaliser in the fourth minute of added time. United have now failed to win seven of their 13 home matches in the Premier League this season. Moyes defended his tactics but admitted that the Fulham result was the lowest point in the season. He said: Today was as bad as it gets. We dominated the game. Being one down was bad enough. The amount of attempts, chances and play we had was unbelievable. How we didnt win I have no idea. Quite often youve seen similar games here where we have been the better team by far, the opposition have got a goal from a set-piece or on the break and then weve been chasing it. It is a concern but I was more worried we were in their box probably 150 times and we didnt score and thats as worrying as it is going the other end twice so equally as worrying. Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen, who left his job as a coach at United in the summer, felt his old teams game-plan was simple to read. He said: I dont think there was any lack of belief as such. When I saw Manchester United I thought the game-plan was quite straight forward get it wide, get it in. After a weekend of upheaval at both ends of the Premier League table, Arsenal will be among the teams bidding to return to winning ways in the mid-week fixture programme. AFP
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday sacked Pakistan Cricket Board chief Zaka Ashraf ostensibly for failing to stop India from taking over the International Cricket Council. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has sacked PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf and suspended the governing board with immediate effect, said an official statement. In a notification issued by the ministry of inter provincial coordination, the Prime Minister, in his capacity as Patron-inChief of the board, appointed an 11-member ad-hoc committee to run the cricket affairs. The ad-hoc committee includes former Test players Zaheer Abbas and Iqbal Qasim, former PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan and former interim chairman Najam Sethi. The committee will nominate a chairman to head the ad-hoc administration, the notification said. Later in the day, Najam Sethi was elected PCB chairman by the interim committee. A PCB spokesman said Sethi had taken charge of his office. Shakil Sheikh, a member of the ad-hoc committee, said Ashraf had been dismissed on different charges, mainly financial mismanagement and mishandling Pakistans stance in the big three issue at the ICC level.
The citys weather hot and happening reflected in-form Karnatakas performance against Rest of India at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Monday . The backdrop of a clear blue sky and a sunsoaked stadium made way for man-made fury which was entertaining for the motley crowd, but surely agonising for Harbhajan Singh and his hapless men. Team success, which has been Karnatakas hallmark this season came to the fore again as Stuart Binny (batting 115, 13x4, 3x6), Karun Nair (92, 12x4) and Ganesh Satish (84, 11x4) showed total disdain for the RoI attack as the Ranji champions piled up 390/5, to take a huge 189-run lead and the upper hand on the second day of the Irani Cup. Resuming on 35/1, K.L Rahul (35) and Satish had no Monday morning blues. With RoI pacers Ashok Dinda, Pankaj Singh and Anureet Singh straying in line, loose balls were in plenty and butter-fingered fielders did not help the visiting teams cause either. Rest got the breakthrough in the ninth over as Rahul was
ant Binny and the RoI bowlers could do precious little to change his attitude. The 29-year-old Binny and 23-year-old Karun took the bowling apart. Their 178-ball 187run partnership was like Diwali fireworks on a moon-less night. Pacers and spinners were slammed all around the park with equal ease and Karun took a special liking to Harbhajan and in the over before tea, cut and swept the veteran spinner for three fours. Playing one of his most sublime innings, Binnys strokeplay coupled with Karuns confidence had Harbhajan chewing on his nails and holding his head in dismay . Stuart Binny in action on Monday. unable to dig out a low delivery from Anureet which rattled his timber. Manish Pandey (36) displayed some of his natural aggression but was sent back by Pankaj as he attempted to cut, but found the edge and the ball landed safely in Dinesh Karthiks gloves. New-man Karun was guarded to begin with and with Satish struggling to negate Harbhajan, the scoring pace dipped. The 25-yearold Satish eventually fell to the RoI skipper failing to read a straight one and ended up cutting it to Kedar Jadhav, filling in for Karthik for a while after the latter had taken a hit on the ankle. OCTOBER 8: Supreme Court allows Srinivasan to take charge; appoints an independent committee headed by justice Mudgal. FEBRUARY 10, 2014: Mudgal committee submits report, says Gurunath was the face of CSK
BCCI honcho N. Srinivasan would not have imagined that Cricket Association of Bihars petition raising several questions on conflict of interest and the constitution of a BCCI-sponsored IPL probe panel with handpicked retired judges would become an albatross around his neck. Just two days after tightening his vicelike grip on ICC and world c r i c k e t , Srinivasan finds himself in a corner once again with Justice Mukul Mudgals report concluding that Gurunath Meiyappan was indeed involved in betting on IPL games, including for and against his team Chennai Super Kings. The timing could not have been worse for the IPL as the probe panel report comes two days before the player auction for Season-7 in Bengaluru. The probe panel findings not only bring the never ending controversy of conflict of interest
Conduct for Players and team officials. The reports conclusions and recommendations section has said that it can do no more than report a violation of the rules to the Court as it does not have a mandate to impose any punishment. It is for the Honble Supreme Court to decide what action, if any, is to be taken pursuant of the report of the Committee. The Mudgal committee has made several recommendations in its report. One particular mention has an obvious reference to Srinivasan and M.S. Dhoni. There are serious charges that the Indian skipper had owned a 15% stake in sports management firm Rhiti Sports Management Pvt Ltd, which also manages players. Players should not be allowed to own any stakes or interests in player agencies or companies involved with cricket unless such interests are in the nature of sponsorship or endorsements. Such interests should be declared by the player or his agent to the BCCI, within 15 days of such interest accruing. In particular employment of the players in the franchise group companies should be avoided, the panel recommends.

MUDGALS RECOMMENDATIONS
In Chennai, BCCI president N. Srinivasan said he would not comment till he had read the report. Also, the IPL auction due to be held on February 12-13 in Bengaluru is unlikely to be affected as the Supreme Court said: Any decision taken in the IPL auction of players should be without prejudice to the order that may be passed by this court. The good (thing) that the Supreme Court has
done is that the IPL auction was not stopped. It will happen as planned, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, also a former IPL chairman, said. The report said it had been proven that Meiyappan, as CSK team principal, was involved in betting and passing on crucial information. It added, however, that there was a need to further investigate the allegations of match-fixing against him. The committee is of the view that the material on
record clearly indicates Meiyappan was the face of CSK and the team official of CSK, the report said, rejecting the claim by Mr Srinivasan that his son-inlaw was merely a cricket enthusiast. The report, submitted before a bench headed by Justice A.K. Patnaik, said there was a conflict of interest in Mr Srinivasan holding the post of BCCI chief and owning an IPL franchise, and that it was a serious issue that needed the courts consideration.
The committee said after perusing the information given by the Delhi and Chennai police, the FIR and chargesheet filed by the Mumbai police, transcript of telephone conversations, that conclusion that emerged was that Meiyappan indulged in betting through Bindoo Dara Singh, who was in direct touch with bookies and punters like Vikram Aggarwal. The panel also submitted the names of people who figured in the probe in a sealed envelope to the court.

Cup-winner Kirti wonders why other teams are silent on Gurunath issue
The deep roots of malpractice in Indian cricket, particularly the Indian Premier League, have shaken the sporting fraternity. Following Justice Mukul Mudgals report that held BCCI chief N. Srinivasans son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan guilty in the spot-fixing scandal, former greats called for a complete overhaul to expose further evil elements. Former India skipper Bishan Singh Bedi lauded Justice Mudgal, but asserted that a lot still needed to be done. This is what I have been saying from the beginning... There were very little legitimate things happening in the Indian Premier League and I am convinced of the truth now, Bedi told this paper on Monday . I want to congratulate Justice Mukul Mudgal for bringing to light the IPL mess. But there is a lot more that needs to be done to expose these evil elements. The days development puts Srinivasans role under the scanner, as he is is about to take over as the International Cricket Council head in July this year. Asked if the world body should consider its deci-
Bishan Singh Bedi sion, Bedi retorted, This is where the cookie crumbles. It means you do not want to clear the mess and even want to rule world cricket. These are people with no conscience. If the ICC does this, then there is something grossly wrong with world cricket. Bedi also called for the closure of the Twenty20 extravaganza, saying it was nothing more than a money-laundering process. Its just not cricket. This is an English proverb and applies to Indian cricket in every way . IPL is bad news for cricket and it is out in the open now. Even the owners are not clean. A majority of people are putting up with it... former and current players, administrators and even the media. I am done with it. I dont have any more time to waste on it, he said.

Saying N Srinivasan didnt know what Gurunath Meiyappan was doing is equivalent to saying Sonia Gandhi doesnt know what Manmohan Singh does
BJP leader and former cricketer Kirti Azad blamed the involvement of politicians for corrupting cricket in the country. The corruption is rampant in cricket and politicians are adding fuel to the fire, Azad told this newspaper. Azad has been voicing his opinion against the way BCCI is being run and the member of parliament minced no words while reacting to the indictment
Kirti Azad of Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of N. Srinivasan, for betting and spot-fixing on Monday . Politicians such as Arun Jaitely (BJP), Anurag Thakur (BJP) and Rajeev
Shukla (Congress) have direct involvement in the mess. When Srinivasan staged the drama of stepping aside from BCCI and Jagmohan Dalmiya became the interim president, those three politicians played a key role through video conferencing. They proudly talk about eradicating corruption in Parliament, but when it comes to cricket they are scratching each others backs, said Azad. With Srinivasans sports enthusiast theory falling flat, Azad is wondering why
other franchisee owners remain silent on the issue. Despite being aware of the fact Gurunath was very much part of the CSK management, the other teams seem to be not bothered about it. The reason is simple; they all depend on each other. The betting scandal wasnt the first disrespect to the game. Other teams had their fair share of controversies such as rave parties, molestation and the Slapgate scandal, said Azad. Azad said it was time the
former players who served the country with pride should take over the Indian cricket board. There are people who want the IPL auction to be stalled and its a matter of opinion. I want the muck to be removed first. The likes of Erapalli Prasanna and Bishen Singh Bedi should be running the sport in the country . If it continues to be in the hands of the corrupt, the day BCCI turning into another shabby Indian Olympic Association is not far away, said Azad.
A source close to BCCI president N. Srinivasan legal eagles is downplaying the fallout of the Mudgal panel report, saying its findings are only recommendatory in nature and that the written word of the Supreme Court alone would decide the future course of action. Insiders say BCCI is going to brazen it out once again by protracted proceedings in the top court.

Film stars play a variety of roles on screen and the audience loves them for their convincing portrayals. But there are some actors who are so good even off screen that one cant help but admire their compassionate natures and the way they bond with their families. The controversy over the stolen plot line for director Maruthi and Venkateshs upcoming film Radha continues, and its still not clear who the story belongs to. Maruthi says he approached Venky and narrated the story to him in a single line a home minister falls in love with a middle-class girl. I didnt tell him the full story, but he immediately agreed to do my film, Maruthi insists. But Venkatesh has been known to sign on the dotted line only after receiving a complete script, so how did he agree so readily? Hes confident about my work so he said yes, the director asserts. Hyderabad gets ready to roll out car-pooling and ride-sharing mobile apps, which are already popular in other Indian metros and even the West

Pilot projects are already being held in the city to make the most of cabs and cars plying almost vacant. In countries like the USA, the concept goes around with the name of car-pooling and ride-sharing and has been quite the hit. The idea is simple. Once you register on these car-pooling or ride-sharing apps, you can have people travelling with you and sharing commuting costs. In other words, car-pooling is giving a ride to your friends, colleagues or even complete strangers in your personal cars or even the cabs being operated by commercial fleet owners. This means, the practice can obviously save a lot of fuel, lessen pollution and also the traffic congestion. It will also reduce idling-time of cabbies and help them make more money in a single day of operations. And, if you happen to have a car, you can share the cost of your fuel. And, some of you can also make new friends on the move.

ON-AIR: Shawn Sebastian, Tejasvi Dantuluri and Fazil N.C. study MA (Com) at the University of Hyderabad
Radio outreach
Lessons these communication students learnt from a rural community RJ in MP
DC CORRESPONDENT
Three MA (Com) students from the University of Hyderabad recently won third prize at the Unesco-Cemca video competition for a documentary that they lifted from one of Unescos films itself. But Shawn Sebastian doesnt take this is an offense, as he explains, I stumbled upon the Unesco documentary on community radio in India. In one of the frames, I saw a villagewoman using radio as an election symbol. It made me sit up and realise how important a medium community radio is in villages. So when Shawn found out that community radio also happened to be the competitions theme, he decided to track down this woman and profile her journey from a housewife to a celebrity RJ in one of the remotest corners of Madhya Pradesh Patara. His batchmate Fazil
N.C. and junior Tejasvi Dantuluri, who are also photography enthusiasts like him, joined in and thats how the shortfilm titled Radio Woman of Patara was made. They rang up the radio station named Radio Dhadkan and soon set out for central India to interview RJ Ramvati. They even stayed at her minimalist hut for three nights, and got 10 times more footage than they needed. The three-minute documentary shows Ramvati going about as field reporter, collecting information from her fellow villagers and anchoring shows on family planning, agriculture, education and healthcare. It was also an eyeopening experience for the trio. For instance, Tejasvi wasnt aware that NGOs like Sambhav (which started this community radio in MP) can really change lives. Now we know that community radios can create awareness. But we have also realised that its only when the administration gets moving, that this awareness can translate into anything of consequence, Fazil points out.
The populations resistance towards allopathic antibiotic drugs is posing to be a serious problem and there is increasing evidence that infections can be fought with alternate systems of medicine like homoeopathy . Founder and chairman of Dr Batras Group of Companies, Dr Mukesh Batra, says that though people want quick and effective results, the need of the hour is patience to allow a medicine to work. Dr Batra says, Homoeopathy has a lot to offer but people must have the patience to allow the medicines to work. Existing evidence in medical journals shows that homoeopathy plays a major role in not only prevention but also in treating the disease. The ineffectiveness of antibiotics has given people a choice to opt for other measures, as in the case of infections wherein despite popping pills, the results are not as expected. The steady shift is evident as thousands of patients frequent Dr Batras 137 clinics in 65 cities of the country and three in Hyderabad. Wellness centres have also proved that homoeopathy has a lot to offer for hair and skin problems. Dr Batra adds, We are now using 3D technology to assess the damage done to the skin. The third layer of the skin can be assessed to identify the damage or recurring damage that will occur over a period of time. There
TOP HONOUR Dr Mukesh Batra was honoured with the Padma Shri award in the year 2012
is also a technique to help us assess the damage done due to the rays of the sun. All these factors allow us to prescribe the best of medicines for our patients. He, however, says that the recent order by the Maharashtra government allowing homoeopaths to practise allopathy is disappointing. In a bid to send the doctors to rural areas they are allowing homoeopaths to practise allopathy which is extremely wrong. The gov-
ernment does not understand that to go and practise in rural areas requires a will from the person. If that is not there then they must introspect on the reason rather than sanction doctors from one system of medicine to practise another, he says. The problem is that within homoeopaths there is a growing feeling that only those who have become successful have an upmarket, niche crowd patronising them. For a doctor, his prescriptions must work, which means the disease must be properly diagnosed and the problems must be correctly understood, he says.

The messy hairdo has been quite a red carpet staple at various award shows. But while the name itself suggests a low-maintenance look, a messy hairdo isnt quite that. In fact, it requires a careful balance you want it to look casual, Bohemian but not like you only just got out of bed. Remember, messy does not equal unkempt. So how do you get the perfectly mussed, messy look? Start by shampooing and conditioning your hair. You want your locks to look lustrous and healthy, not dull. Next, towel-dry it gently until theres no more water dripping off the ends. De-tangle your hair gently with your fingers and shake it out until it falls freely and then, use a blow dryer on different sections blowing from the tip of your hair up towards the scalp. Volume is very important in a messy hairdo. Add a little volumising product to different sections of your hair and then, once again, gently shake out your hair with your fingers. Ensure you do this for all your hair. Last, tease a few sections of hair (especially those around the crown) with your comb, spritz on some hairspray and youre good to go!
FOR THE SKIN Chemical peels such as glycolic acid peels and combination peels with kojic acid, lactic acid, arbutin and Vitamin C can reduce pigmentation, treat sun damage and gives a healthy glow after 6-8 sessions. A resurfacing laser treatment will help you get rid of acne scars and marks. This will also take care of fine lines, uneven skin texture and sun damage. Mesotherapy also helps achieve an even skin texture and a lighter look. Mesotherapy i nv o l v e s

New York will have a building that will be built primarily from organic material, a combination of chopped-up corn husks and fungi (specifically mycelium, the vegetative part of fungus), mixed together in brick-like moulds. The resulting organic bricks will be used to create three towers. At the top, a smaller set of bricks, coated in a reflective film, will increase the amount of sunlight the fungi receive, thereby expediting the building process. According to Mashable, The Museum of Modern Art announced that they have selected Hy-Fi, designed by David Benjamin, to be built in the Museums outdoor installation space in Queens, New York.

Sunil Grover, who became one of the most loved characters on television with his character Gutthi from Comedy Nights With Kapil, has begun a new journey as Chutki on Mad in India. The actors abrupt exit from the hugely popular CNWK had created a controversy, but Sunil seems unperturbed by the episode. He says, Im not missing Gutthi. The objective however is the same I want to bring a smile on the audiences faces. Having made a name for himself as Gutthi, Sunil admits that he is nervous about how the audience will react to his new avatar. Yes, I am a tad bit nervous, but its more of a responsibility . I enjoy my work and forget everything else when I am acting. Apart from Chutki, I will also be playing other new characters. There has also been a lot of buzz about who would make it to the guest list of Mad in India, but Sunil refuses to disclose the names. He says, We have a celebrity management team and have already shot a few episodes. The channel will decide which episode will be aired when. When quizzed about why his show is airing at 9 pm on Sundays (an hour before Comedy Nights With Kapil, instead of giving it direct competition), Sunil smiles and says, Thats not something we decide. The channel takes a call. I personally feel 9 pm is a good slot.

WHY WE LIKE IT: The first true competitor to Fords EcoSport, as far as looks go. Secondly, VWs much-needed jump into a segment thats not just hot... its radioactive!

Vivian takes after her gorgeous mom
Shes one of the most famous international faces, known for her countless runway appearances and photo shoots. And her photogenic ability appears to run in the family, as Gisele Bundchen and American footballer Tom Bradys daughter Vivian Lake hardly glanced away from the cameras at Los Angeles International Airport. Clearly taking after her gorgeous 33-year-old mother, the one-year-old showed off her big beautiful eyes and honey hair whilst resting in her mothers arms. The youngster was adorably dressed in a floral white blouse, baby pink trousers and fur-lined boots. Meanwhile, Gisele proved to be effortlessly stylish even with a baby to tend to. The former Victorias Secret Angel donned a green and blue plaid blouse, studded belt, skinny trousers and knee-high boots. Her long locks were flocking down, complementing her bronzed face that was covered with a pair of black sunglasses.
