Longevity Science Normalose

Normalose contains corosolic acid, a phytochemical found in the Banaba plant, which has reduced blood sugar levels as much as 30% in Type II diabetics in an oral human clinical trial.*
The banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) is a popular medicinal plant which grows in India, Southeast Asia, and the Philippines. The plant usually grows to 5 to 20 meters in height. A tea brewed from the leaves of the plant has been used in these regions as a folk medicine for high blood sugar.*

Research On Corosolic Acid

Corosolic acid, a phyto-chemical found in several plants, had demonstrated a hypoglycemic effect in an animal study with diabetic mice, published in 1991. In 1993, researchers at the Hiroshima University School of Medicine in Japan and the University of the Philippines then isolated corosolic acid in the leaves of the banaba plant. They found, in an in vitro (test tube) study, that corosolic acid stimulated glucose transport across cell membranes 20% more than was found in the control.* In 1999 an animal study was published showing that corosolic acid encouraged weight loss in obese diabetic mice. * This preliminary work was followed by a human clinical trial published in 2003. Subjects with diabetes mellitus Type II (age-onset insulin-resistant diabetes) had statistically significant reductions in blood sugar levels when orally dosing with 48 mg of banaba leaf extract, containing corosolic acid.* The banaba leaf used in the study was standardized to 1% corosolic acid content, yielding a daily total of 480 mcg of corosolic acid. This clinical trial also demonstrated that diabetics using the lipid-soluble form found in softgels had blood sugar levels reduced to a greater degree than diabetics ingesting the same amount of corosolic acid in dry capsules. Both the lipid-soluble and dry capsule forms of the extract reduced blood sugar levels, but the lipidsoluble form was found to be more effective.* In 2004, an animal study established a likely mechanism for the beneficial effect of corosolic acid. The study observed corosolic acids effect on a type of glucose transport protein called GLUT4. GLUT4 facilitates the transfer of glucose across the cell wall, where it is stored in cells as glycogen or lipid. GLUT4 is normally stored within the cell's interior within the lipid membrane of a storage vesicle. As blood glucose levels increase, insulin levels also increase, and this activates a series of signaling events which moves the vesicle containing GLUT4 towards the cell wall. The lipid membranes of the cell wall and the vesicle containing GLUT4 fuse together, incorporating GLUT4 into the cell wall, where it can then facilitate the transport of glucose into the cell. The 2004 study showed that the amount of GLUT4 incorporated into the cell wall was 148% of that observed in control mice which received no corosolic acid.* Since the translocation of GLUT4 from the interior of the cell to the cell wall is necessary for GLUT4 to facilitate glucose transport, it follows that the net effect of increasing GLUT4 in the cell wall would be to increase glucose transport into cells, decreasing blood glucose levels (glucose outside cells).

Longevity Science Normalose

Human studies have used 48 mg daily of banaba leaf standardized to 1% corosolic acid. Longevity Science Normalose offers the exact same amount of corosolic acid per dose, by using 1.334 mg of banaba leaf extract containing 18% corosolic acid. At a daily dose of two softgels, this new formula provides the same daily total of 480 mcg of corosolic acid in the absorbable lipid-soluble form as was used in the successful human study published in 2003. Longevity Science Normalose is available in bottles of sixty softgels. Suggested Use: 1 softgel 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner. Consult with a physician prior to use of this product if you are pregnant, nursing, or have any existing medical condition.
