Use the mark scheme below and work in pairs to grade the 4 exemplar pieces of work. You must try and place the work into the correct level. Wherever possible you should use a best fit model, this means that you take an overall view rather than harshly penalising for one fault. Use the space provided to give specific examples and write a summary comment at the bottom of the page. You are examining the FRONT PAGE ONLY MGN

There is long shots, mid shots, and close ups effectively used to create a variety of shots for the magazine. The shooting material is very appropriate to the indie mainstream genre with props such as guitars, cheque shirts, leather jackets and models with relevant style to the genre. The mise en scene for this magazine is effective as it uses blacks, reds and greys throughout. Also the photos have a good lighting which compliments the rest of the page. The photos use relevant colours as the girls hair and lipstick matches the colour scheme of the magazine. The props used such as a guitar also makes it seem professional as they are relevant to the genre. The photo on the

front cover has been relevantly resized and enlarged to fit the page and stand out on the front colour effectively. Also every photo has been cropped so they fit more effectively on the page and only include the relevant detail needed. The language register used is good. Quotes are used in the right places and spelling and punctuation is correct. Also it is the correct language to attract the target audience. The text and images overlap well and are layered well making it easy to read without covering the image. The framing of the magazine is good and everything has a nicely spaced gap between it. The paragraphing on the double page spread is displayed well and nothing is too close to the edge of the page which would affect printing. There is a variety of different text sizes with larger and smaller text to attract a reader to the more important things on the page. Also there are a variety of different fonts and colours to represent different parts of the magazine effectively. Photoshop or another editing

Minimal Level 1 10 23 marks framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate Basic Level 2 2435 marks The framing is mainly central but half of peoples heads are cut off in photos. People have to lean in to fit in the frame. Photos have been tilted in odd positions and had borders where the colour scheme doesnt match added around it. The variety of shot distances is ok. The front cover is a mid- shot and the other pictures are mid-shots except for the picture at the bottom of the contents page which is a long shot. However the shots arent very appropriate as they dont look professional and dont display the genre they are supposed to show. Also the same photo is used for the front cover and on the double page spread. The shooting material is appropriate to the task in the front cover photo as they are wearing clothes that represent the genre they are trying to sell to. However the middle photo on the contents page isnt relevant shooing material as he isnt the right model and isnt wearing the right Proficiency Level 3 3647 marks Excellence Level 4 4860 marks

clothes to represent the genre needed. Some of the photos look like they have been prepared on a background and a proper set and the lighting is good such as the top photo on the contents page. The front cover has been cropped or lassoed on photo shop and put onto a background to try and make it match the genre targeted. However it looks unprofessional. Other photos such as the middle and bottom photos on the contents have bad lighting and they look like normal photos with no intention of using mise en scene or modelling for use on a magazine. Also the middle photo on the contents page uses a phone as a prop which has no relevance to the genre at all. The cropping on photos is poor as it cuts off part of the models head on the front cover and models are leaning to fit in the frame making it look unprofessional. The language register is trying to meet the needs of the genre by using slang but it is too informal and looks unprofessional. The layers on the contents page are poor as the text overlaps onto the

photo and the colours clash which makes it hard to read the information. Also the text is random colours on every page and no theme is kept throughout and some of the words are hard to read in places. The page design and layout isnt very good. The words overlap onto pictures on the contents. The contents title itself is cut off the side of the page on some letters. Too many boxes overlap when not needed on the double page spread making it look unprofessional. They have used a variety of texts and sizes and have made the important information in a bigger font. However some of the fonts dont match the genre either and the random use of colour of fonts makes it unprofessional. Yes the right software used but not to the best ability.

Proficiency Level 3 3647 marks The framing of shots could be better because there is a black line at the bottom of the shot on the contents page where there is no background. Also the front cover should be a midshot as it would look better. Another thing is that the model is looking down and not showing his face which seems unprofessional. It doesnt use any mid-shots or close ups only long shots which it will be criticised for. The shooting material isnt always relevant as the picture on the contents page the model has a camera. The colour is bright to attract the reader but it is contrasting and I feel it doesnt look professional and a more similar colour to blue should be used. Also the lighting in the photo isnt great as shadows can be seen. The boy in the photo on the contents page is holding a camera which isnt relevant. And the setting is just a basic modelling shoot plain background. The photos havent been cropped very

well. On the contents page photo of the lad, it needs to have been cropped at the bottom as it shows where the background isnt there. The language register is average. I cannot see any spelling mistakes and it is addressed to the target audience that the magazine is aiming for. However the vocabulary used is very dull and basic. This has been done but not to the best ability. The illustration and text overlaps and is still legible and it doesnt affect the viewing of the picture. However where it says editors note on the contents page the blue background and border looks tacky and doesnt fit around it properly and covers part of the photo. The page layout and design is pretty poor as the text seems to close together and the little amount of gaps makes it look unprofessional. Also things overlap the picture in an unprofessional looking way. There is a good use of font size on the front cover to specify what the important parts of text are to read. However on the front cover there is

Basic Level 2 2435 marks The framing of the shot is good as all of the shots fit the page correctly and are well in proportion. There is a good variety as the front cover is a mid-shot and there is a close up and long shot on the double page spread to create a variety. The same photo or very similar photo has been used on the contents page and double page spread. The front cover looks relevant as the girl is wearing headphones; however the other photos have a boy playing guitar which isnt appropriate shooting material for the task as it isnt dubstep related. The lighting used is effective as it sticks to the overall colour scheme of the magazine with a basic colour contrasting a bright yellow. The objects used arent always appropriate as a guitar isnt relevant to dubstep music. But headphones could be seen as relevant. Neither of the models strike me to be dubstep listening people which I think looks slightly unprofessional. The

setting is just basic model backgrounds. The cropping and resizing of photos is effective as all of the photos fit the magazine well only cutting off irrelevant parts such as a bit of the elbow on the front cover. The language used is relevant to the target audience. The text overlaps some of the photos using a box behind it which I feel looks unprofessional. The page design on the front cover and contents page is good however on the double page spread it looks like there wasnt enough room and a column has been randomly squeezed in. A mid-shot is used on the double page spread and the front cover and a close up is used on the front cover. A long shot is needed. The shooting material is appropriate as the model looks indie and is wearing clothes to suit the genre targeted. The lighting for the photos is good; the purposeful shadow on the contents page is effective. The colour is good as it uses vibrant colours that suit the indie style wanted. The setting is just a plain model background. All of the photos have been cropped and resized correctly on the magazine. However the size of the photo on the contents could be slightly different. The language register used is ok. It is addressed to the right genre however capitals

need to be used for the titles of bands etc. The text and illustration works well as the font matches the genre of the magazine. However the colours of the text need to change on the front cover or placement as the white font over the image doesnt look right. The layering and page layout is good as it all fits and the gaps work well. There are more than three fonts which isnt professional. Also the text size on the contents page is too big and there arent enough words on it either. Photoshop is used well to create the magazine.

However on the front cover it looks like it hasnt been cropped properly. The shot distances work with the close ups and mid-shots but there isnt a long shot which is needed. The models stretchers, nose ring and headband are appropriate. However he looks to nice to be the main model for the rock band featured. The mise en scene is good as the lighting in the contents page is effective. Also the models stretchers, nose ring and headband are good props. The setting is just basic. The cropping on the front cover doesnt look like it has been done properly as the bottom of the photo has an odd shape on it. The cropping and resizing throughout the rest is good. The language register is poor. The audience that is it aimed at wont find the vocabulary interesting as it doesnt get to the point and it waffles on slightly. tweaks are needed to the vocabulary and font to make it look better. The front cover is to plain for the genre aimed at. The double page spread needs a change of font also The layout of the front cover is good but not for the genre aimed at. It is to simple, the font isnt right and the barcode is wrong. The page design on the double page spread doesnt have enough space either. Too many different fonts are used, needs to stick to three. However font size is ok.

The shooting material is alright. The model works well and looks arrogant however indie clothes are needed to improve it. The lighting is good if the shadow can be proven to work through an example and other lighting works well. The model fits the genre himself but the clothing needs to be more indie to work. The setting is just a basic background. The cropping and resizing of images is good. The images fit every page and all important key features are included. However the front page photo could be changed or made slightly smaller. The language used is good and addresses the right genre / target market and vocabulary is good. The text used needs

The page layout is alright on the contents page not including the photo. The layout needs to change on the double page spread with the text. And the front cover needs some adjusting with placement of things such as the quote, title, size of barcode etc. Too many fonts used. Need to stick to just three fonts throughout to make it look professional. Also the quote text on the front cover is the wrong size. The text size on the contents is ok but some text size needs to change on the double page spread. Photoshop is used well to create the magazine.
