Our courses consist of general Italian courses, conversation courses and culture courses. Terms last for 10 weeks and we run 4 terms a year. We aim for a minimum class size of 4, and a maximum of 12. Unless you are a complete beginner, a brief evaluation test is highly recommended to ensure that we can place you in the most appropriate class. The evaluation test is available on our website. We also offer private tuition which can be arranged upon request.

Language and Culture courses at the Italian Institute of Culture, Melbourne

1* Cultura Italiana
Students are given the opportunity to discuss topics mainly regarding Italian classic and contemporary literature through the reading of extracts from novels by Italian writers. Teacher: Adriana Diomedi

This course is suitable for students who have already reached an advanced level of competence in Italian and would like to deepen their knowledge of Italian culture. Authentic documents such as media articles are analyzed and discussed during classes. Different themes each lesson, decided together at the beginning of the course. For each topic we will provide a video and/or a audio component about the theme. After this we will discuss the topic giving the students a wide vocabulary. Speaking you can improve the vocabulary with synonymous and contrary. Didactic material provided by the teacher Teacher: t. b. c.

6* From Grammar to conversation


This course is focused on explaining and consolidating Italian grammar following the textbook Parla e scrivi. Students will gain a clear and comprehensive knowledge of all grammatical aspects of Italian with the goal of building confidence in speaking and understanding beginner to high intermediate levels of written and spoken Italian. 2* Italian Literature Courses


One course of Modern Italian Literature is offered to students , teachers and readers who have a good knowledge of Italian; and an other for lovers of literature who have little or no knowledge of Italian. The courses will be taught in ten two hour lessons delivered once a week over ten consecutive weeks, from 6 to 8 p,m. with a short interval after the first hour. Authors selected to be studied range from the second half of the 20th Century to Giacomo Leopardi (an exact contemporary of the god-like John Keats). They will be read in the original with special attention to their metrical structures and conventions. The aim is to provide the reader with the means for a richer and deeper enjoyment of the art of poetry and poetic prose. No more than ten participants will be admitted to each course. The courses will be taught by Domenico Tindaro Di Luca, a writer of Italian verse himself and an experienced reader and teacher of Italian, Homeric, Lyric and Classical Greek as well as Latin Languages and Literatures. 7*THE SECRETS OF ITALIAN ART: FROM THE RENAISSANCE TO FUTURISM


This unique course represents a great opportunity to discover the secrets hidden behind the italian painters while learning more about italian language and culture. During the course students will live the atmosphere of the Renaissance with Raffaello, Leonardo and Michelangelo, the explosion of colours with Mannerism, the Baroque with Caravaggio and his competitors, the return to the rules with Neoclassicism and the opening to the creativity and instinct of Romanticism, without forgetting Futurism, a true italian artistic current. During the course you will learn the key words of art in italian language and you will know about terms such as colore veneziano, chiaroscuro", "non-finito michelangiolesco This incredible journey will take you through the italian art and you will enable to study it in its original language. 3* A Journey into the Divine Comedy


This course is an introduction to Dante Alighieris Divine Comedy, and to the political, religious, and cultural context in which it was written. During the course students will be studying the three Cantiche from Dante's Divina Commedia, starting from Inferno. For those students who feel confident with the Italian language, this course offers an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Italian culture through the reading of one of the most impressive poems in western literature. Each week students will be guided progressively through the fantastic world of the Divine Comedy. By the end of the course, students should have acquired some understanding of the basic theological, philosophical and literary concepts of this epic medieval poem. Teacher: Adriana Diomedi

8* Bravissimi
The Childrens course at the IIC is developed and conducted by qualified educators. The aim of the course is to make the childrens learning experience both fun and productive. In order to achieve this classes are conducted in Italian and adopt an activity-based approach. Activities may include games, role-play, songs etc. which are relevant to each age group. So as to give children adequate attention and to cater for differing levels of language, class sizes are small not exceeding 10 students in a group.

4* Conversation (Pre-intermediate level)


Conversation course for students who have completed at least four levels of Italian beginner level (80 hours of formal language study) and wish to consolidate and practice the competence so far acquired. This course is designed for those students who wish to focus on improving conversation while revising
