Tonight we take enormous pleasure in
welcoming the exciting and adventurous
Forest side t o Boundary Park. .For my
money they were, last season, the most
exciting and progressive side in the country.
Manager Brian Clough has assembled a

side rich in style and flair. . a side that
has brought back the word entertainment
t o the game of football.
We welcome Brian, one of the game's
most colourful and controversial characters,
along with his team and the Forest officials
and supporters.
I am sure they will not have travelled
north with any illusions. Playing Oldham
Athletic at Boundary Park is no easy task
and we will be looking t o tonight's match to
provide us with a passport into the third
round of the League Cup.
Over the years the League Cup tourna-
ment has not been especially kind t o us. We
had a marathon tie with Brighton in the
second round last year before going out,
undeservedly we all believed, t o Hull City.
And unfortunately, that third round
defeat was very much a part of a League
Cup pattern for Oldham Athletic .. .a
pattern not painted with the colours of

into the third round since the tournament
started way back in 1961!
And really, when you consider the
progess the club has made since the early
60's. our total failure t o make any impact
on the competition is baffling.

Since the early 603, we have had our
odd bursts of success and near glory in the
F.A. Cup but fame and fortune in the
League Cup has avoided us.
However, all runs of this sort must come
to an end sometime, and i t could certainly
end for us this year despite the pedigree of
our opponents in tonight's match.
At the time of going t o press with
tonight's programme, two big stories were
hogging the sporting headlines.
First was my own decision on not t o
leave Boundary Park for Third Division ,
Walsall and second was the club's
determined efforts t o bring in players t o
strengthen our first team squad.
On the Walsall business, I have already
said much of what needs to be said. My
decision was taken after a lot of careful
thought about the prospects and potential
of the two clubs.
I must be honest and confess that I
would have dearly missed Oldham and
Boundary Park if 1 had left here to go t o
the Midlands. Over the years, I have built
up many friendships with people at the
club and in the town and Oldham Athletic
have been very good t o me.
We have a marvellous set up here and,
although we have made tremendous strides
over the last 10 years, there is still a job t o
do. That job is to get Oldham Athletic into
the First Division and I believe i t can
definitely be done.

1978 undoubtedly the most successful
season i n the club's history when they won
their first ever League Championship and
manager, Brian Clough, became only the
second manager in English football t o take
a side t o the Championship i n its first season
after gaining promotion from the Second
Division. The season was made even more
memorable b y the winning of the Football
League Cup with a side weakened b y the
ineligibility o f several players who were
"Cup-tied". Young England goalkeeper
Chris Woods received the Man of the Match
Award for the 0-0 draw at Wembley against
Liverpool and then went on t o star again in
the replay a t Old Trafford when they
eventually won 1 4 following a John
Robertson penalty. This was the first time
a club has accomplished the feat o f winning
both the Championship and the League
Cup' in one season. they also reached the
quarter finals o f the F.A. Cup.
The Championship was won b y 7 clear
points, giving a total o f 64 points, and
they scored 69 goals whilst conceding only
24, the latter equalling the record held b y
Liverpool. They were undefeated i n their
last 26 games and lost only 3 throughout
the season. Several players gained Inter-
national honours. Peter Shilton and Tony
Woodcock for England. Tony also gained
Under 21 honours. Viv Anderson and David
Needham appeared in the England 'B' team
and Chris Woods and Steve Burke at Youth
team level. Three players were selected t o
play for Scotland in the World Cup, John
Robertson, Archie Gemmill and Kenny
Burns. Martin O'Neill yet again played for
Northern Ireland.
Nearly all the game's individual awards
were gained b y their players. Kenny Burns
won the Sportwriters "Footballer of the
Yeaf' and the Midland Sportwriters "Player
of the Year" awards. Peter Shilton was
selected the P.F.A. "Player of the Year" and
Tony Woodcock took the "Young Player o f
the Year" award from the same body.
After gaining a record number of four
"Manager of the Month" awards from Bells
Whisky, Brian Clough was finally selected
"Manager o f the Year". John Robertson
won the A.T.V. Star Soccer "Goal o f the
Season" award and Tony Woodcock won
the First Division Managers award for the
"Player of the Year."
Peter Withe ended the season with 19 .
League and Cup goals as the club's leading
scorer, and Frank Clark delighted everyone
b y scohng his first ever League goal at
Ipswich in 485 outings1
PETER SH ILTON: Their record signing, .
this superb professional cost them more '
than E% million when signed from Stoke
City in September 1977.
Peter was obviously a major factor in
their League championship triumph, and is
regarded b y Messrs. Clough and Taylor as
the best 'keeper in the world. A n England
International on 25 occasions, he conceded
just 18 goals in 37 League outings for them
last season - a tremendous record.
His other former club is Leicester City
- his local team -and he succeeded the one
and only Gordon Banks in their goal before
eventually following his mentor's footsteps
t o Stoke City.
ARCHIE GEMMILL: Another vital
member o f the old Derby County side (he

Archle joined them shortly after the start o f

Involving their former keeper John
Middieton.
One of the outstanding midfieldmen i n
Greet Britain, he is a tireless source of
inspiration t o any team and has represented

wee Scot netted one o f the really out-
standing goals in the recent World Cup
Finals In Argentina.
His other former clubs ere St. Mirren I
and Preston North End, and he's now
completed some 450 League appearances
in his career.
CHRlS WOODS: The currant England
Youth team goalkee~er. Chris boasts the
unique recordof having 'played at Wembley 1
-- and gained a League Cup winner's medal
despite not having appeared in a League
fixture.
This peculiarity arose because he
deputlsed for the cup-tied Peter Shilton, and
it culminated in his superb displays against
Liverpool at Wembley and Old Trafford.
Born at Swineshead, near Boston, the I
teenager joined their staff i n July, 1976
efter having represented them In the Central
League whilst still at school.

Lloyd's ankle i n j u r y i n t h e early stages of
last season, David was signed f r o m Queens
Park Rangers as his replacement f o r a six-
figure fee. He soon settled i n t o his stride
and q u i c k l y began t o score those vital
goals f o r w h i c h he's noted.
He did, o f course, commence his career
w i t h their neighbours Notts. County and
proved himself t o b e a tower o f strength
during their climb f r o m t h e lower reaches
o f Division F o u r t o contenders f o r a First
Division berth.
His ten-year association w i t h the
"Magpies" ended over a year ego when h e
joined Rangers, b u t his stay e t Loftus Road
was n o t a particularly happy one and h e
was delighted e t t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o join
Forest.
Devid f i r m l y established himself i n t h e

I A N BOWYER: "Bomber" burst u p o n

campaign.
T O N Y WOODCOCK: A local youngster
f r o m Eastwood w h o has been an automatic
selection over t h e pest 2 0 months although
he missed six of their final seven games
last term through injury.
T o n y regained f u l l fitness i n t i m e t o
receive his England debut against Wales I n
t h e H o m e Championships, and had earlier
netted five goals f o r t h e England Under-21
side i n just t w o Internationals (against
Finland and Italy).
H e joined t h e m as an apprentice i n
August, 1 9 7 2 and received his Second
Division d e b u t some 2 0 months later.
Unfortunately, his expected improvement
d i d n o t continue and h e spent loan periods
w i t h b o t h L i n c o l n C i t y and Doncaster
Rovers.
When he returned f r o m t h e latter club
(October, 1976) he was immediately
recalled t o their senior teem and his career
since t h e n has been a veritable fairy tale.
Tony, w h o possesses tremendous pace
and skill, was elected "Young Player o f t h e
Year" b y t h e Professional Footballers'
Association and grabbed 1 8 League and Cup
goals f o r Forest last season.
J O H N McGOVERN: A t r u e professional,
whose talents are n o t always recognised b y
supporters. Montrose-born John appeared i n
all Four divisions o f t h e Football League
b y t h e t i m e h e was 2 0 years o f age. He's
since played under t h e jurisdiction o f Brian
Clough a t f o u r different clubs. end
completed almost 4 0 0 League games.
He was t h e manager's first major signing
f o r t h e m (along w i t h John O'Hare) i n
February, 1 9 7 5 w h e n t h e pair were bought
f r o m Leeds United i n a bargain package
deal.
T h e skipper of their side, John missed
m u c h o f t h e latter part of last season
because o f a niggling groin injury.
He's now won a First Division
Championship medal w i t h t w o different
 clubs, and has been used, w i t h great effect,
i n a central defensive position i n their
colours. Considering he's regarded as a
midfialdman, and began his career as a
winger, it illustrates his importance t o t h e
side.
L A R R Y LLOYD: He started t h e last
campaign i n superb f o r m b u t unfortunately
b r o k e a bone i n his f o o t against Coventry
C i t y before Christmas, and it resulted i n
David Needham being b o u g h t f r o m Queens
Park Rangers as his replacement.
When Larry was subsequently recalled
t o t h e side d u r i n g their successful League
r u n (Needham was cup-tied i n this
competition) his displays were so impressive
t h a t he once again ended t h e season as first
choice centre-half.
A n England International, Larry began
his career w i t h Bristol Rovers (his h o m e
t o w n club) w h o eventually transferred h i m
t o Liverpool i n 1969. Followinglost a bad
