MARINE PARKS: A SENSIBLE APPROACH

Protecting South Australias marine life is important.

South Australians have always cherished our diverse marine environment and are passionate advocates for sustainability. Thats why over a decade ago the South Australian Liberal Party proudly proposed to create state marine parks to carefully manage our marine environment. We recognise the importance of preserving biodiversity and identifying the threats and challenges facing our precious state waters. We believe however that the current approach by the Weatherill Labor Government to the marine park management plans is flawed. The proposed Sanctuary (No Take) Zones will have a devastating effect on a range of sectors vital to the states economy. Regional communities, the tourism industry and both recreational and commercial fishers will suffer under Labors proposal. The zones are damaging and are not supported by scientific evidence. Whilst the Liberal Party supports the creation of marine parks, we believe vital sectors of our states economy must not be harmed. If elected, a Marshall Liberal Government will take a sensible approach to marine parks that protects regional communities, exports, jobs and the marine environment.

MARINE PARKS: A SENSIBLE APPROACH

The South Australian Liberals:

Support marine parks but are not in favour of the current Sanctuary (No Take) Zone boundaries proposed by the Government.

Do not support the Governments process for creating the current Sanctuary (No Take) Zones. The SA Liberals process would follow a threats based determination of any protection zone as per the COAG National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas.

Will continue working with the commercial and recreational fishing sectors, as well as representatives from a range of regional communities to keep the pressure on the Government ahead of any final decision regarding Sanctuary Zones. Remain committed to protecting the marine environment through the aquatic reserve provisions in the Fisheries Management Act 2007. Call on the Minister to wait for the final report from the Legislative Councils Select Committee into Marine Parks before making the ultimate decision. Would allow PIRSA to continue their management of fishing in the state rather than turning the responsibility over to DEWNR, if elected to government in 2014. Commit to a review of the marine park management plans and zone classifications within the states nineteen marine parks. This review will make specific reference to Marine Park Local Advisory Group and regional action group proposals to government.
