Literacy Lesson: Fluency 7th Grade: English As A Second Language (ESL) Class

Student Objective - Today I will engage as a strategic reader of text and apply my knowledge of fluency through phrasing.

Fluency Lesson Instruction Scripted Lesson Plan + Supplementary Materials Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen. As you recall, over the course of this last week we have been working on building and practicing our strengths as strategic readers. Our content focus will concentrate on the fluency component called PHRASING. (Class what is our content focus today?!) Today we will continue doing so through our reading of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. When we practice phrasing in reading, we PAUSE at punctuation. This ensures that we can best comprehend and understand text. Ladies and Gents, I would like to draw your attention to our class objective. We will now read it aloud together: Today I will engage as a strategic reader of text and apply my knowledge of fluency through phrasing. I DO To begin, I will model for you how I use phrasing. I do this by pausing at punctuation, so that I can comprehend what I am reading. Please listen while I read the 1st 2 Lines of Scene 9. **ASSIGN PARTNERS** READ FAST (Poor Example) N1: Mr. Thatcher and Tom lead a group of villagers to the cave. They unseal the entrance. (bad) N2: Right inside lies Joe, dead. (good) READ SLOW & PAUSE (Good Example)

(good) **Class, turn to your partner and identify which reading was easier to understand and why** **Ask for class volunteer to share** **Comment** WE DO Students, this time you are going to help me. We are going to read the next 2 lines together. There are blue marks indicating where strategic readers pause between phrases. Our goal while reading together is to use phrasing, which means pausing at punctuation to ensure that we can best comprehend text. Tom: I cant say Im not relieved, but I do feel bad for him. It is a terrible thing to be trapped in a cave. N3: After Joe is buried, Tom takes Huck aside. THEY DO TOGETHER ** ASSIGN PARTNERS** (2s, Triad, Etc) Next, with your partner, I want you to read the next 2 lines of Scene 9. As you are practicing, I will be walking around and listening for your fluency goal of phrasing. Tom: Huck, I think Joe was hiding treasure in that cave. Huck: Thats a shame. They sealed that cave up. I DO INDEPENDENTLY To conclude Scene 9 of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, I would like each of you to whisper read the last 3 lines to yourself. As a strategic reader, you will keep your content focus in mind and practice the fluency skill of phrasing. As always, remember that Our Goal is to use

phrasing, which means pausing at punctuation to ensure that we can best comprehend text. Please do this and complete the pink exit ticket. Pass them down the row when youre finished because I will be collecting them for class data. Tom: I know how we can get in, through the hole I used to escape. Huck: Hurry up, then. Lets go! Fluency Rubric & Self-Assessment: Phrasing

(1.) Circle the box that best represents how you independently read & used phrasing in the last lines of the passage. Excellent (4) I always pause at the punctuation. My phrasing helps make my reading easy to understand. Good (3) Most of the time I know when to pause in my reading and I do it accurately. This helps me to understand what I am reading. Average (2) I try to stop at the end of the sentence, but I forget to stop for all the other punctuation. Needs Improvement (1) I do not know when to stop in my reading to take a breath. This makes it hard to understand what I am reading.
