Hay, here comes the festival!

to the 70s. The hay bale people - at the Western entrance to the town have embraced the theme. Theyre opposite Crossroads Trading, who helped to build the people with their forklift. Theyre three round bales altogether, so theyre pretty high. The Wombat Arts Network organised it again but the Ballan First Scouts and Cubs Group helped in decorating them. Theres a male and female and theyre looking like theyve gone back to the 70s!, said Festival Chairperson Helen Tatchell. The festivals annual parade will feature local schools along with the Creswick Light Horse Brigade, a brass band, community groups and oats celebrating the 70s theme. The 39th annual Ballan Art Show will also be held in conjunction with the festival. The festival will also feature the popular Pet Show, to be judged by Moorabools Mayor, along with the return of the woodchop event, which some competitors use to qualify and practice for the Sydneys Royal Easter Show competition. We have a 70s fashion competition down the catwalk, exhibitions also include the Lal Lal Photographic Group, model railways, life drawings, historical society display and a new Superheros artwork by Ballan resident Dingo. There will be kids entertainers as well, lots of food stalls, rock climbing and a bungee trampoline, the vintage machinery display, and the Scouts and Cubs will have an obstacle course. Inglis St will be closed for the day. The ofcial Art Show and Festival Launch will be held on Friday 21 March at the Ballan Council Chambers from 7.30pm, with tickets available at the door for $5 each.

Off and running

By Jessica Howard After almost a year of waiting, 5-year-old Cooper Van Der Molen has nally received his new set of wheels. The Van Der Molen family has been raising money for the purchase of his new wheelchair since mid 2013, in the hope of giving him as much independence as possible (as reported in The Moorabool News, 20/08/2013). The young Maddingley resident suffers from a form of ectodermal dysplasia, a disorder that affects the hair, nails, sweat glands and teeth. The disorder means Cooper is unable to sweat a problem which has seen him admitted to hospital a countless number of times. The Van Der Molens held a trivia night called Wheels for Cooper last September at St Bernards Hall in Bacchus Marsh, which his mother, Lisa Van Der Molen Government) covered most of the costs, but the Van Der Molens were still $5000 short. Ms Van Der Molen says Coopers wheelchair has made a huge difference in their lives, with Cooper attending Ballarat Special School this year; he has a lot more independence. It is something that words cannot describe. Cooper no longer has to sit around waiting, he has his independence, which is what every mum wants for their family, Ms Van Der Molen said. Just the other day in the supermarket he tried to run off on me, She laughed. When he takes off, its like seeing your child take their rst steps. I couldnt be more proud. The generosity has been amazing, and I would really like to thank absolutely everyone who donated and made this possible, she said.

By Kate Taylor Moorabool is home to a trial crop of opium poppies. Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey conrmed that a trial of the highly regulated plant is currently underway in the shire but would not specify where. The Department of Environment and Primary Industries is overseeing the trials which are taking part across the state and is also remaining tight-lipped on specic locations. Tasmania currently produces about half of the worlds supply of opium derived from alkaloid poppies, which is used in the manufacture of drugs such as morphine and codeine. Cr Toohey explained that if growing the poppies in Moorabool proves successful, it could open up a whole new crop for local farmers. Were very pleased to be part of the trial to grow poppies - it could be a very signicant opportunity for our farmers in the future. He said that poppies enjoy a fertile soil with high spring rainfall which many parts of Moorabool have and would not require any more irrigation than other crops already grown. It is a very similar area to Tasmania where they grow them, so were certainly hoping therell be positive outcomes not only for farmers in Moorabool but for the state of Victoria. By Jessica Howard Rehearsals have commenced for the Moorabool Light Orchestra recently, in anticipation for its rst performance for 2014. The 40-member Orchestra will present a Festival of Hymns & Sacred Music in St Bernards Catholic Parish Church, as part of the Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival. Held on the Sunday afternoon of March 16, the performance will feature inspirational sacred music selections by the Orchestra, along side featured guest artists and communityinvolved singing of popular hymns. Musical Director and Conductor, Barry Wilkins, said he was delighted to announce that a 50-member choir from Sing Australia Ballarat would take part in the program. The choir, conducted by Marilyn Kent, will perform together with the Founder and CEO of the Sing Australia Organisation, Colin Slater, Mr Wilkins said. Mr Slater is a former principle baritone soloist with the Victoria State Opera. The orchestra will also be accompanied by organ/piano, Mr Wilkins said. Accomplished musicians and mother and daughter combination, Dierdre Foyster and Jane Nice, will be the accompanists for Sing Australia, Ballarat. Proceeds from the concert will benet The Neighbours Place - an Emergency Food Relief Centre at Bacchus Marsh. By Kate Taylor The annual Best Apple Pie Contest is fast approaching, and reputations are on the line. Held as part of the Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival, on Sunday 16 March this year, the competition showcases not only local baking talents but also one of the towns most famous products apples.
Local pastry chef Ian Pertzel has the tasty job of judging entrants in this years competition. Each year there is hot competition for those seeking the glory of baking the Best Apple Pie, said Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association President David Durham. This year, judging of the Best Apple Pie will be held
within The Village Bacchus Marsh, who are also contributing as our 2014 Main Street Entertainment Partner. We encourage juniors, adults, locals and visitors alike to take part. Entrants must drop off their pies between 8 and 9am. Judging commences at 10am. Winners will be announced at 1pm. Features of the day also
include a petting zoo, pony rides, grape stomping, The Village Carnival, live music, sausage sizzles, swan stilt walkers, and more. By Kate Taylor Democracy will be live and in action this week at Elaine. Moorabool Shire Council will hold its monthly council meeting in the town and locals are being encouraged to attend. To be held on Wednesday 5 March from 5pm at the Community Hall, the meeting will give locals an opportunity to ask a question during public question time and register to speak on an agenda item, if they wish to. West Moorabool ward Councillor Tom Sullivan said the night will provide residents of Elaine and surrounds a chance to see how council operates. Councillors are keen to take council to smaller communities in recognition of the diverse nature of the municipality. Council has scheduled four of its 2014 meetings at smaller towns throughout the Shire, which provides people greater access to meetings and allows them a better opportunity to participate and have their say.

Preparing to hARVEst the tourists

By Jessica Howard A farm gate bus tour program has been announced ahead of the 2014 Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival. The Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association announced the return of the free bus for Sunday March 16, along with a self-drive Meet the Grower Tours and barefoot grape stomping. Competitions will be run for the best apple pie and the best veggie patch, along side the Lions Club Train Orchard Tours and the everpopular gumboot throw. The not for prot Tourism Association is offering two bus tours which will take guests through the historic Bacchus Marsh Avenue of honour, meeting growers and tasting produce along the way. The 2014 tour also includes two exclusive farm-gates along Werribee Vale Road, which are otherwise not open to the public. Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association President, David Durham encourages local families and their visiting friends and relatives to come along and to ensure they book seats on the bus. Alternatively, its very easy to follow along in your car and still meet the growers, otherwise to pick up a copy of the event program, he said. As the event celebrates its 8th birthday, the Annual Grape Stomp will be brought into the Bacchus Marsh town centre. Our event program in 2014 is as strong as ever, with more exciting details yet to be announced, Mr Durham said. We are pleased to bring the Barefoot Grape Stomp in the town centre which will enable increased exposure and opportunity for visitors and locals to take part. Our beautiful town centre will be as vibrant as ever thanks to our Entertainment Partner, The Village Bacchus Marsh, who are also hosting the Best Apple Pie competition in 2014 Mr Durham said.
Turning wheels for chairty

By Jessica Howard Bacchus Marsh cyclists will be getting on their bikes for charity this March to raise money for life threatening medical conditions. Russell Gilbert will undertake a gruelling ride from Sydney to Gold Coast to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This will be the ninth time Mr Gilbert has taken part in the annual Rotary 1,000 kilometre ride heading north from Sydney through Northern NSW onto the Gold Coast. With 35 bike riders and three support teams, the team goal is to raise $100,000. We usually raise between $60-70,000 each year, but this year we have challenged ourselves, Mr Gilbert said. Since 1999 the annual Rotary Ride has raised almost a million dollars for a number of local charities and hospitals with a strong focus on health research. The ride is a great way to promote the chosen charities and with the help of the community, a huge difference can be made to the lives of many men and women, Mr Gilbert said. Meanwhile, a team of four; Danny Humphrey, Adam Humphrey, Ben Humphrey and Mathew Minney, are riding from Bathurst to Melbourne over nine days to raise some much needed funds for Make-AWish Australia. The Bacchus Marsh residents will begin the ride on March 21st from Bathurst. The team was created to make a difference by giving to the people who need it most. A goal of $20,000 worth of donations has been set, and so far the public has generously given over $1,500. Since its inception on Australia 28 years ago, Make-AWish Australia has granted over 7,000 wishes to children across the country.
Underbank housing or farming?

By Kate Taylor A proposed residential development at Underbank will next week be one step closer towards an ofcial decision. Moorabool Councillors will discuss the issue at a Special Meeting of Council on Tuesday 11 March. They will vote on whether to refer submissions received regarding Moorabool Planning Scheme Amendment C62 to a Planning Panel, which would be appointed by the Minister for Planning. Amendment C62 is the Planning title of the rezoning proposal Council is being asked to consider to have the Underbank Stud Farm in Bacchus Marsh rezoned so it can be developed into housing. The meeting will be held at the Supper Room, Bacchus Marsh, commencing at 5.00pm and Council has invited interested members of the public to attend. Moorabool Shire Mayor Paul Tatchell acknowledged the keen interest in the proposal. He said the meeting is one of many opportunities the community will have during the process to learn more about the proposal and the decision making process. Community Feedbacks an important component in Councils decision making. In fact Underbank was originally scheduled for the ordinary meeting of council in Elaine, but we felt it signicant enough to hold off a week and have a special meeting about it amongst the local community most directly impacted by whatever decisions we make. Cr Tatchell said that should Council decide to refer it to a Panel, community members will then be able to submit their views on Underbank to the Panel. The nal agenda and further information will be published on Councils website www.moorabool.vic.gov.au and will be available on request at Council Customer service centres prior to the Special Meeting. Celebrating memories and friends

By Jessica Howard Local Ballan resident, Len Missen has celebrated his 90th birthday at his Ruemera Park farm home. With 65 people attending the celebrations from Rockbank, Ballan and Bacchus Marsh, Len enjoyed the day under the marquees last month. Luckily it was a really nice day, and it was great to see all the old ones again, he said. Len was born on February 8, 1924 and lived most of his years on a farm in Rockbank, before moving to his 600 acre farmland in Ballan in 1988. He has resided there for the past 25 years. Married to the late Betty Missen, they shared two sons, Lee and Gary, and three grandchildren. Betty passed away in 2009, and he now lives on his property with a 14 year-old kelpie cross, called Tippy. A Footscray Football Club fanatic, Len played football for his local team in Rockbank, where he won three premierships and was the only ever playing president. He played Country Week tennis at Kooyong for 20 years, and occasionally in Bacchus Marsh, where he played an exhibition match with the great Frank Sedgman, a winner of 22 Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Today, on Friday nights, Len meets with a group of friends from around the area to wine and dine together in various foodie places. The group also enjoy a Sunday BBQ on Lens property. We go everywhere, he said. There used to be ten of us, but now there is only eight. Its a just a good way to catch up with each other on a regular basis. Len says he enjoys living in Ballan and catching up with friends and Len Missen celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends and enjoys the company of his 14 year old dog Tippy. More than 50 entries to the Art on the Ballarat Train Competition are now on display at the Ballan Railway Station. Poetry, drawing and painting, and altered photographs are exhibited in the waiting rooms and the signal box windows. Entrants range in age from six to 103, with wonderfully creative work from all. Commuters were invited to submit work created on the train, about the train, in December and January, using traditional or digital tools. As the train turned into a bus for most of this period, entrants have been especially lateral in their approach. Prizes were vouchers for Ballan retailers. All entries are on display. The works will be on display at the station until 20 March, and then they will be moved to the Mechanics Hall for an exhibition at the Ballan Autumn Festival on Sunday 23 March.

Call for indigenous youth

By Jessica Howard Passionate Indigenous Australians aged 16 to 25 are being urged to apply for a youth parliament project to be held in May. The National Indigenous Youth Parliament Program (NIYP) allows for 50 young Indigenous Australians to travel to Canberra, to learn directly from the people making the decisions that affect their communities. AEC Victorian Indigenous Community Engagement Ofcer, Darren Williams believes it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. There are no specic skills or experience required. We hope young Indigenous Australians from Victoria who are passionate about issues and willing to have a say will seize this great opportunity, Mr Williams said. Theyll get expert training in public speaking and in dealing with the media, and theyll meet members of Parliament and other national leaders. NIYP will be held from 28 May to 3 June 2014. The centrepiece of the program is a two-day simulated parliament in the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House where participants will debate bills and important issues. Young Indigenous Australians aged 16 to 25 must apply no later than Monday 10 March 2014. Participants will be chosen based on their ideas and interest in government and parliament and their potential leadership skills. Application forms are at www.aec.gov.au/Indigenous.

By Kate Taylor Travelling into council ofces may soon be a thing of the past for many locals as a National Broadband network initiative paves the way for video conferencing. Council secured $375,000 funding from the Federal Governments Digital Local Government Program, which provides funding to eligible local councils to develop methods of using the high-speed broadband connectivity of the NBN to improve the quality, availability and timeliness of local government services. Video conferencing units will be set up at council ofces in Ballan, Darley and Lerderderg Library to enable users to interact online with council ofcers to discuss and resolve their enquiries from their homes and businesses. It can potentially be used for alternative communication in a variety of Council interactions, said Council CEO Rob Croxford. The technology is anticipated to be of best use in situations previously requiring residents to travel into Councils Customer service centres for face-to-face con-

King asked to leave

By Kate Taylor Member for Ballarat Catherine King was asked to leave the parliamentary Chamber last week after refusing to withdraw comments deemed unparliamentary. Her comments came after controversy emerged surrounding Alastair Furnival, a former Chief of Staff to the Liberal assistant health Minister, who was in the employ of the company Cadbury when Tony Abbot announced funding for the company last year as an election promise. The $16 million tourism infrastructure grant to Cadbury was ofcially announced last week. Mr Furnival was also revealed to have sponsored Mr Abbot in the Pollie Pedal event. Ms King said in parliament: Pollie Pedal, sponsored by Cadbury. There are photos of the Prime Minister and the former chief of staff, teammates together. The Member for Bass objected to the comments and Ms King was asked to leave the Chamber for one hour after refusing the Chairs request for her to withdraw. A spokesperson for Ms King said that Catherine did not believe the statement was unparliamentary as it was a statement of fact. The speaker however in the interests of maintaining order in the chamber asked her to withdraw and she regretfully declined. The spokesperson pointed out that Labor MPs were directed to leave on ten occasions last week - some more than once - but that no Government MPs were directed to leave.

This will connect council ofcers and the community in a way that has not been possible here before and we are looking forward to being able to offer video conferencing as a way of communication, he said. Along with video confer-
encing, a new GIS mapping service will improve access to planning and location services. A link will be provided on councils website that will enable access to information such as land parcel size, planning zones, places of interest, community facilities and road information. We are hoping that the implementation of these services will enable residents to gain information more effectively and reduce increasing demand on Councils Customer Service team as Moorabool Shires population continues to grow, Mayor Tatchell said.

Flanagans border Inn opened in 1850, in one of Victorias historical towns, Bacchus Marsh. The border inn was essentially the means for the town to come into existence. In 1851 it became the first coach stop on the road to the Ballarat gold diggings (and thus the first coach-stop in the state) and Bacchus Marsh essentially developed around this traffic. Today it is still an icon in the town and on the 17th March 2014 holds the traditional St. Patricks Day celebrations. From 6pm Brodie from 2fat2skate will be entertaining the patrons. Urgent need for Blackwood to be mobile

By Kate Taylor Moorabool has put its best foot forward in the ght for a piece of the Federal Governments $100 million funding program to x mobile phone blackspots throughout Australia. Council is lobbying the government and negotiating with telecommunications providers, as well as having made a submission to the funding program for more telecommunications infrastructure. In this day and age, people expect to be able to contact others when needed I mean some of these blackspots are a stones throw from Melbourne, Mayor Paul Tatchell said. If we can convince the Federal Government to build some mobile infrastructure in our shire, it becomes feasible for the commercial operators to provide a mobile service in these areas they have previously ignored. He said that competition for the Federal Government program will be intense however, as approximately 75 per cent of the continent is eligible to apply for the funding. Mayor Tatchell estimates that will cover about 200- 250 locations Australia-wide. Consequently Mayor Tatchell doesnt expect all locations on the Shires mobile telecommunication priority list to be funded by the Federal Government Programme, but says he is encouraged by the support of other stakeholders regarding the importance of improving mobile coverage in the Shire. Everywhere I go, all levels of government seem more aware of the urgency of getting mobile coverage to places like Blackwood, so the lobbying by council and the community is starting to take effect. Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey has advocated for some time to have better mobile phone reception particularly in Blackwood, identied as a bushre hotspot, and said that at the recent opening of the new re station and community re refuge building in the town, Premier Dennis Napthine and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells gave verbal support for improvements. Speaking at the opening last month, Premier Napthine said the mobile phone service in many of our re prone areas is a serious issue that the Victorian government is very concerned about. We have already taken up directly with the Federal Government the need to improve mobile service in areas across the state, and I will certainly be taking up the issue of the Blackwood community. The Abbott government have allocated $100 million dollars to x mobile service in key areas of high risk and certainly Blackwood should be up there on the top of that list. Cr Toohey said that providing mobile phone coverage in Blackwood is a priority especially with the bushre risk faced in the area. Its extremely important many people come here for holidays and to visit, and they expect their mobile phones to work. Its critical to be able to warn people of an imminent threat, and thats also a VicRoads road with a lot of heavy transport on it. Its a very critical area - the whole area through Dales Creek, Blackwood, and Greendale, its very important we get support from the Federal and State Governments for the $100 million put aside for blackspot funding. Labor member for Ballarat Catherine King said she is concerned that $100 million will not go far enough. I have written directly to Malcolm Turnbull to raise mobile coverage across many towns including areas of Moorabool. Communities in high risk re areas should certainly have priority. The Abbott Government have raised community expectations with their Mobile Coverage Programme that they now need to deliver. I am concerned however that the funding allocation will mean that many of these communities will miss out.

similar issues working with Council Ofcers. Like the other Chairs we were frustrated by the lack of operating dollars afforded to managing the park passive recreation areas. The funding the mayor and council ofcers refer to comes from grant monies. I believe a super committee has merit, but I would leave the Race Course Committee as a functioning Committee but include the Hub Oval at Darley where 10s of thousands of dollars have been spent on substandard facilities with no consultation with the sporting clubs that have used that facility for many years prior to the Council moving in. Even with one super committee I will be interested to see who within the community is willing to work with council ofcers who have not been able to convince community and sporting club members in the last three years to join these committees, and up until last week are still calling me in relation to proposed maintenance at Darley Park. Until Council ofcers do their job - and that is to lter bureaucratic noise and reduce the red tape before it gets to these voluntary sporting clubs and committees - there will be no one willing to participate, and why should they when between the current clubs things have progressed without a committee and without User Agreements between these sporting clubs and Council. I think the Mayor needs to attend the individual sporting committee meetings to get a feel for the real issues rather than provide an outline about what council has provided from the same people that have forced these community sporting clubs and reserves into this predicament.

Our federal government has appointed a review committee into the Renewable Energy Target that looks more like a lynch mob than a review. Choosing not to allow clean renewable energy is choosing coal. This mine re is the worst of the worst of coal, but its part of the package. Lets bear that in mind when our government seeks to restrict the options that could reduce our dependence on the worlds dirtiest fuel. Currently, the Hazelwood coalmine is burning, and probably will for weeks to come. Once coal seams catch re, they are very hard to put out. Residents in nearby towns, especially Morwell, have seen their Air Quality Index top 1300. The level at which it is considered very poor is 150. This index is a measure of various pollutants, which include dangerous levels of the toxic gas carbon monoxide; and high levels of particulate pollution in the PM10 and PM2.5 categories (and no doubt smaller particles, too). These particulates are a direct danger to health, as they are breathed deep into the lungs - especially the ner particles and can be a serious health risk for people with existing lung and heart diseases. Children, whose lungs are still developing, are also at great risk. Some particles can be carcinogenic, so there is no safe level of exposure. I feel for the people of Morwell, and its incredible that the mine operator GDF Suez allowed this to happen. Moorabool residents would do well to reect on this. The same risk of re is present in any exposed coal seam, on top of the inevitable year-round dust. Lets make sure we dont get another coal mine in our shire. This disaster is in stark contrast to the latest report of the National Health and Medical Research Council, which has found (yet again) zero evidence that wind farms cause health
Dear Editor, I am absolutely disgusted by the councils decision to cut family day care as it is seen as running at a loss. I was on that waiting list for 18 months for family daycare as theres no child care places in Bacchus Marsh. The impact this has had on my family has felt like watching dominos fall. We were a single income family caring for three children, now I am a single parent family, I have been unemployed for 7 years as I have been the primary carer of my disabled son and now a toddler. Now I really need childcare especially before and after school care which family daycare can provide. Its also better for kids with disabilities to get more one to one care compared to a large childcare centre. This removal of family daycare is just going to make it harder for Mums trying to return to work or study and respite care for carers. Think about the social cost to families before you axe this service. Thats the real cost you need to consider. So, it seems, it is little wonder the current federal government is only too happy to ignore any attempt to face climate change and why the term is not mentioned in polite society. It is just not on the radar. In the environmental concerns climate change comes in at number seven, behind household waste. Again it is removed from our awareness and, because the media often centres on immediate and catchy news, the many and varied impacts of climate change do not serve medias purpose. And then there are the vested interests. On a brighter side some are much more aware now of the many environmental issues we are facing. For example in north-west NSW hundreds of people - farmers, families, traditional owners, and other community members - are currently risking arrest to join protests at the site of a proposed coal seam gas project in the Pilliga forest. This project - the Narrabri Gaseld - would have a devastating effect on the land, water quality, and wildlife of NSW. The proponents of this project - mining company Santos - are pushing ahead with this development despite the many risks it poses. And it seems some Australians who own shares in Santo are seriously looking at their shares. They want to see their company doing the right thing. Many people protesting in north west NSW are farmers. They are asking Santos CEO David Knox to honour his promise: Under this company I operate, if you dont want me on your land to drill a well, I will not be coming. And closer to home a large zone of land, running from Highton to Anglesea, is currently under licence for gas exploration. On a recent Saturday a local group called Frack Free Geelong, who are opposed to gas exploration and mining in the region, marked out a section of the zone with hazard tape. As weve seen from overseas and interstate, fracking poses serious threats to our health, drinking water, rivers, farmland, and other industries, particularly tourism, said Elizabeth Packett, spokesperson for Frack Free Geelong. We want to raise awareness of this issue in our region by physically marking

Attitude survey has cause for concern

The CSIRO has just released its Fourth Annual Survey of Australian Attitudes to Climate Change (Interim Report, Leviston et al, CSIRO, Jan. 2014 - Public Attitudes to the Environment) in which survey respondents were asked to rank a set of general concerns and a set of environmental concerns in order of most important to least important. The ndings are just about as serious a cause for concern as the current climate change crisis is. The general concerns in this CSIRO survey in order of importance to the people who completed this survey were: health, the cost of living, employment, education, the economy, crime and justice, electricity prices, affordable housing, water, the natural environment, government and politics, drug out an area where a potential gas eld could lie. People will be shocked to learn that its on the same land as private homes, businesses, churches, kindergartens, sports clubs, Deakin University and even the Highton Cemetery. The state moratorium against fracking, which runs until June 2015, does not protect us from exploration drilling. The mining companies could start that any day, and if they nd gas, you can be assured they will do everything they can to extract it. The exploration drilling in itself is a huge investment costing millions of dollars for which these companies will expect a return. Gas mining is a choice, and if we choose to go down that road, we are locking ourselves into continued fossil fuel addiction for decades. According to the latest peer-reviewed climate science, this is the last thing we should be doing. We have other choices. There is no shortage of sun or wind in our area, explained Elizabeth Packett. When we read of the lack of concern over climate change we can become despondent but then when we read about the good number of local people ghting for their land and on behalf of the coming generations then we can see hope. A 20/20 challenge
The Under 14 teams from Ballan and Darley Cricket Clubs gathered for the inaugural 20/20 Challenge. Darley batted rst and ended their innings with a score of 107. With Ballan unable to reach the required total, the Darley boys took the shield home for their clubroom wall. Both sides had some very good batting and bowling throughout the game, with some of the Ballan boys gaining experience on a turf pitch for the rst time. Ballan coach Mick Loughnane said the match was very successful and that it was a great opportunity for both Ballan and Darley to play in a higher class of cricket and also to bring both clubs closer together.

Avenue entered the seminal round of the BDBD weekend pennant competition with three Divisions representing the Club. Division 3 played Ballan at Ballarat in a contest that saw Avenue jump to an early lead only to be pegged back after the afternoon tea break, with the result coming down to the last end. Avenue were able to hang on for a 1 shot victory after 100 ends. Final score - Avenue 88 def Ballan 87 Division 5 came up against minor premiers City Oval at Buninyong. Despite Lyn Robinsons team winning by 11 shots, the other 3 rinks were unsuccessful, going down by a collective 46 shots ina game that Avenue expected to win, based on recent performances. Nonetheless they too live to ght another day and face Midlands in next weeks preliminary nal Final score - Avenue 72 lost City Oval 108 Division 9 also played Ballan and were condent of victory, given that these two teams played each other last week at Avenue, with Avenue winning by 44 shots. This time the game was played on grass at Daylesford, but despite Avenue winning 2 of the 3 rinks, Ballan came out victors by ve shots. The clubs youngest team, C5, also played an away game against Elaine, the team just above them on the ladder. This match was very close with Ballan just getting over the line. Good hitting, close game scores and plenty of deuces once again did not reect how the members played despite the nine set loss.
