GOING FOR TWO ... Wauseons Kris Boysel heads for two of his 16 points against Bryan Friday night. (View all photos from this event for FREE by visiting www. thevillagereporter.com) By Bill Bray THE VILLAGE REPORTER WHITEHOUSE - 02/28/14 - In a year that has seen Bryan turn into a true rival, the Wauseon Indians avenged a loss from a week earlier to defeat the Golden Bears 63-49 to win a Division II Sectional title Friday night. The two teams squared off the week before and Bryan (13-9) won a share of the NWOAL title with the Archbold Bluestreaks with a win on Wauseon's home court. This time the tables were turned and the Indians (18-6) won the more important of the two matches propelling them into the Division II district semifinal with Toledo Scott Wednesday night. From the opening tipoff there was an immediate difference from the last game between the two talent laden teams. Zac Robinson, who did not score in the first matchup, drained a rainbow threeball to start the scoring. Seconds later, Noah Castle was fouled by Sean Culler hitting one of his two shots to give the Indians a quick 4-0 lead at the 6:12 mark of the opening frame. Baskets by Thomas Martin and Culler tied the game at 4-4. Castle pulled down a rebound off a Austin Schimmoeller miss that led to another three point goal by Robinson to up the Wauseon lead to 7-4. At that point the two defenses dominated play until Jason Hug's make at the 1:41 mark made it a 7-6 game. After a Wauseon turnover, Castle scooped up a rebound that led to the Indians third three-point shot, this one by Corry Byers. The quarter ended on a Jacob Newlove basket off a dish from Castle and the Indians had opened up a 12-6 advantage. The Bears' Hug missed the opening shot of the second quarter with the rebound going to Kris Boysel. Byers was found open again at the top of the key beyond the arc and drained another three to open the margin to nine points at 15-6. Bryan finally brought the 8-0 Wauseon run to an end after Martin was fouled by Boysel. He sank his two free throws and the score read 15-8. The teams matched misses before Martin fouled Boysel with 4:59 remaining in the first half. Boysel canned both shots and the lead was back to nine at 17-8. A Bryan turnover followed by a Byers miss and matched by a Bryan miss that was pulled down by Robinson led to a Castle make to open the margin to 19-8. After a Bryan timeout, Jake Jones scored two baskets sandwiched by a foul shot from Boysel as the Indians lead was 10 at 2212. The Golden Bears scored twice and the Indians got a bucket by Byers as the half ended with the Indians in control at 24-16. Bryan closed the gap to six to start the second half with a shot from Culler. But two straight Wauseon baskets from Castle and Boysel opened the game back up to a 10 point advantage once again. What was absent over the first three quarters was the three point shot that the Golden Bears enjoyed in their first meeting with Wauseon. Defensive adjustments and another strong performance by the Wauseon perimeter defense, not only stymied Bryan's three point shooting but shut it down almost totally. They finally scored one from beyond the arc when Brandon Dean hit with 4:51 remaining in the contest to make the score 48-30. With the third quarter ending seeing Wauseon in complete control at 38-23, the fourth quarter was equally as Indian dominated. Though Bryan outscored Wauseon in the final eight minutes 2625, it was a complete domination by a great Wauseon defense that stole the show on several occasions. Noah Castle led his team with 19 points, Boysel added 16 and Byers 14 as the Tribe now moves on to tackle a very good Toledo Scott team who were winners in sectional play over Genoa 114-60.

BRYAN: February 28, 2014 The first contest of the Bryan D-IV Sectionals on February 28 saw the #1 seeded Edgerton Bulldogs facing off against the Stryker Panthers for the title. The Panthers opened their 2013-14 campaign against these same Dogs, dropping a 52-46 decision in The Cage. Stryker got off on the wrong foot in this game, spotting Edgerton an early 9-0 lead, and had to play catch-up the rest of the way out. The Bulldogs, despite having the big edge early, were never able to run away with the game as the Panther Pack settled in and began chipping away at the lead. Edgerton appeared to be finally be pulling away with a pair of threes in the fourth period, but even that 9-point edge was insufficient. Stryker cut the deficit to just three before having to give fouls. Edgerton capitalized on their opportunities at the foul line to send the Panthers home on a 54-43 decision that was closer than it appeared. No individual stats were received pursuant to this game.

Double Overtime Drama Sees North Central Topple Fayette On Ferguson Three
the score 31-28 and Fayette struggling from the field as they had all night against the North Central defense, Sanford buried his only three on the night with 3 tenths of a second left to send the game into overtime. Neither team was able to put up points in the first overtime, and as the seconds ticked down, the second overtime appeared to be doomed to collect another set of zeroes. With the score still tied at 31-31 and time winding down to zero though, North Central senior Clayton Ferguson had the ball on the perimeter, trying in vain to escape the defense of Sanford. Finally, with 2 tenths of a second remaining and Sanford still in his grille, he took a desperation shot from the mid right beyond the arch that went off glass and in as the buzzer sounded. His trey put a dagger into the hearts of the #2 seeded and defending Sectional champion Fayette squad. "I still haven't hit reality yet," said a smiling Ferguson in the locker room after the game. "I saw that the shot was far right, and I just called bank...I don't know. Unbelievable. It's huge; I just feel so good right now." When asked about the defense of Sanford, he was quick to reply that he could not get a good look for the final shot. "No, not really. He was right up in me, and hands up. I couldn't even get open half the time, he was so tight to me." Chase Legacy led North Central with 10 points, while Ferguson, Branden Turner and Josh Sawyer each finished with 8 points. With the defeat the stellar careers of Fayette seniors Sanford, Tyler Cox, and Justin and Marcus Stoltzfus comes to a close. Cox led Fayette with 10 points, while Sanford finished with 9. Tristen Bates, Wade Burkholder and Koby Biddix each had 3 points, Skylar Lantz had 2, and Jerad Seiler was held to one point. The Eagles' defense held down the highspeed offense of Pettisville for the first half, opening up a double-digit lead that the Blackbirds were able to trim to eight going into the intermission. The second half saw Pettisville going full-out on team speed and switching defenses, alternating between a trapping man press and a 1-3-1 trapping zone press. At times triple-teaming on traps, Pettisville began to cut into the deficit by forcing turnovers. With the North Central lead cut to three going into the fourth and the game becoming a track meet, the game became a back and forth war that ended tied at 38 at the end of regulation. Overtime saw much of the same... pedal to the metal back and forth, and with the clock ticking down to zero, a double overtime looked to be in the works. With less than three seconds left in the extra frame and the score knotted at 40-40 though, lightning struck, and the thunder that followed was nothing short of deafening. The Blackbirds were shopping around for a last shot opportunity against a North Central defense that was more than averse to the idea. The Eagles forced a loose ball in the circle on the Pettisville end, and free-for-all ensued to snap up the ball. Out of the fracas with the ball came Rychener, who circled right, cut to the middle and let fly a runner with 1/10 second remaining. The ball touched nothing but net as the final buzzer was sounding. The deafening explosion from the Pettisville student cheering section was

These BBC teams feature good insideoutside threats, and pack the speed and ball handling ability to make them both potent on the defensive end. It was that defense that played a huge role in the contest as a trey from Fayette's Chandler Sanford with three tenths of a second remaining sent the game into overtime, and another trey from North Central's Clayton Ferguson with two tenths of a second left in the second overtime ended the game with North Central upending Fayette by a 34-31 score. On February 26, the David versus Goliath matchup at the D-IV Sectionals saw the Edon Bombers taking on the Pettisville Blackbirds. Both teams registered a win against the other during the regular season, but to see the lineups coming out onto the floor for the opening tip, it was a question as to which Edon team would show up...the dominator or the frustrated. For all their advantages in size, the Bombers were frustrated all evening by the speed of a Pettisville defense that turned turnovers into points with rapidity, sending Edon home with a 38-29 defeat. The loss spells the end of the line for Edon seniors Jacob Brown, River Wicker, Mike Peeples, Brock Thiel, Levi Lemmon and Wyatt Walkowski. No individual stats were received pursuant to this game. Pettisville takes on North Central for the Sectional title on February 28.

DEFENSIVE CONTRIBUTOR ... The defensive effort by Zac Robinson and Co. against Napoleon led to a sectional semifinal victory against the Wildcats. (View all photos from this event for FREE by visiting www.thevillagereporter.com) By Bill Bray THE VILLAGE REPORTER WHITEHOUSE - 02/26/14 The Wauseon Indians advanced to a Division II sectional title game with a 6037 thumping of the Napoleon Wildcats Wednesday night. In their first meeting during the regular season, Napoleon used the three-ball to defeat Wauseon. This time around the "three-ball" abandoned the Wildcats for most of the contest leading to a big Wauseon win. Defensive play by guards Zac Robinson and Corry Byers stymied the Napoleon perimeter game throughout the first half of play. With the arc shooting out of the equation for the Wildcats, Wauseon took a 14-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Indians' Noah Castle committing a foul on Wauseon's first offensive possession, ended in foul trouble much of the game as the 6'5" junior post player committed two fouls the first half and had to sit for part of the first 16 minutes. Castle completed a conventional three-point play to put Wauseon up 17-6 to start the second quarter. Kris Boysel followed with a 'nothing but net' three and the Tribe exploded to a 20-6 lead. The 6-0 run came to an end when Boysel fouled Anson Lankenau on his three-point attempt. Lankenau made two of the three foul shots and the Wildcats had their first points of the second quarter with nearly three minutes gone. Boysel was good on a one and one and Napoleon's Michael Gilliland made a foul shot as the score read 24-9. Those were the only points the Wauseon defense allowed during the second eight minutes as the half ended with the Indians up 29-9. Napoleon came back to the game in the third period with fire in their eyes. They knew that if they were going to run and gun, then was the time to do it. The three-ball began working for the Wildcats. Zach Willeman scored a pair of baskets as the Indians lead began shrinking to 29-14. Napoleon scored three from beyond the arc to help them close the gap to a 10-point deficit 41-31 as the third quarter ended. Wauseon came out strong in the final eight minutes as they went on an 8-0 run to make it a 49-31 game with 5:27 remaining. The Indians had weathered the storm and cruised down the home stretch. From that point they outscored Napoleon 11-6 to go on for the semifinal victory. Kris Boysel led all scorers with 21 points as Jacob Newlove finished with 12 and Noah Castle with a quiet 11. Wauseon (17-6) and Bryan (13-8) are now set for their rematch from a week ago. The Indians are hoping to avenge a 72-65 loss to the Golden Bears. Game time is set for 6:15pm. DEFENSIVE POWER ... Hilltops Jalen Towers (L) held the upper hand defensively over Strykers Parker Ruffer (R), but the Panther big man came alive in the second half to end up with 17 on the game. (View all photos from this event for FREE by visiting www.thevillagereporter.com) By Mark Mercer THE VILLAGE REPORTER BRYAN: February 25, 2014 At tonight's opening game of the Division 4 Boys Basketball Sectional, held at Bryan High School, it was a tale of two half's. With the Hilltop Cadets seemingly in control at the 5:34 mark in the 3rd quarter, the Stryker Panthers came alive aided by Hilltop turnovers and the Panthers Dean Beamont's 3 steals in a 30 second span. At the 1:47 mark, Stryker re-captured the lead and never looked back, running away to record a 70-55 victory and advance to Friday night action against # 1 seed Edgerton. Opening the game, Hilltop came out fired up, grabbing an early 5-0 lead and outpacing the Panthers in the opening quarter 20-15. Hilltop's Number 21, 6' 0" Freshman Tim Maneval lit up the scoreboard off the bench , hitting for 12 points early to pace the Cadets to a big 1st half. It was also a huge defensive effort by the Cadet's Jalen Towers and Maneval, dominating the boards early and frustrating the Panthers on both ends of the court. The Cadets held Stryker's big man, Parker Ruffer to 1 point in the opening half, but keeping the Panthers on pace was Sophomore Chad Ruffer, who hit for 12 in the 1st. Going into the locker room at the half, Hilltop held an 11 point lead, 37-26 and most importantly had the momentum swinging their way. Opening the second half, once again Chad Ruffer made key shots and stood tall along the defensive front, and at the 5:34 point in the 3rd, the momentum began to swing the other way. Hilltop committed costly turnover's that opened the door and allowed the Panthers to claw their way back, and at the 2:05 mark the game was tied. Powering the Panthers in the second half. both Chad and Parker Ruffer, along with Beamont, came alive and from that point in the game, the route was on for the Stryker Panthers. In the game for the Panthers, Beamont led the way with 19, while Parker Ruffer added 17, along with Chad Ruffer's 16. Also on the board for Stryker, Tanner Clingaman had a big game defensively while adding 8 points, and Junior Brennan Woolace hit for 6. For the Cadets in the loss, coming off the bench to hit for 21, Maneval had a huge game and showed he will be a huge factor for the Cadets over the next three seasons. Jalen Towers contributed 8, and was a big factor defensively in the opening half, helping pace Hilltop to a big halftime lead. Freshman Quinn Smith scored 7, Kelby Grime hit 2 big 3's for 6, while Senior Xaiver Lowery chipped in 3. SCORING BY QUARTER: Hilltop 20 17 15 3 - 55 Stryker 15 11 22 22 70

Wauseon Lady Indians Courageous Comeback Falls Just Short In Loss To Lima Bath

ARCHBOLD: February 27, 2014 The Fayette Lady Eagles set out to try to improve on their D-IV District runner up post from last year, and their first task was to get past Holgate. The Lady Tigers and the Lady Eagles played each other tough for four quarters and several lead changes, but Holgate has a long running tradition of unshakable leadership running through their team named Clady...in this case, Jillian Clady. The family name is synonymous with Holgate hoops, and despite the best efforts of Fayette's Taylor Griffiths in the fourth period, there was simply too much Clady leadership for which to atone. A small advantage was widened by late free throws as Holgate sent Fayette packing by a 50-44 score. The loss ends the Lady Eagles' season at 17-6, and also ends the Lady Eagle careers of the heartbeat of a team that has overcome adversity all season long...seniors Madelyn Maginn and Jena Myers. No individual stats were received pursuant to this game.
CAPTIONS ... Wauseons Natalie Koenig erupted for 18 points in the second half to help the Indians overcome a 23-point deficit to send the game into overtime. (View all photos from this event for FREE by visiting www.thevillagereporter.com)
By Bill Bray THE VILLAGE REPORTER PAULDING - 2/27/14 Forget the first three quarters. It was the fourth quarter that will go down in Wauseon girls basketball history. The Indians dropped the district semifinal game to Lima Bath in overtime 82-78. But going into the fourth and final quarter the chances of an overtime session were highly unlikely. The Indians fell behind after the third quarter by the score of 56-36. The Tribe only scored 11 points in the third quarter and the Lady Kittens took advantage by banging down 22 points. Lima Bath sank four three-point shots during the stretch. Every time the Indians scored, during the third quarter track meet, the Lady Kittens responded. They slowly built on their lead as the score reached 17 points with a three by Tera Herr. Wauseon failed to score over the final 1:47 of the third stanza. The fourth quarter started with the same sharp shooting by Lima Bath as Bri Smith was good from beyond the arc to give her team a 23-point advantage at 59-36. With that the sea parted and coming through it were Natalie Koenig, Sally Frank, Haley Archibeque, Sariah Yackee and Maddie Richer. The starting five for the Indians played the most aggressive, determined quarter of basketball they have played all season. A bucket by Frank made the score 5938. A Bath turnover led to a basket by Archibeque at the 6:34 mark to make it a 19-point deficit at 59-40. Yackee tied up Danielle Van Dyne giving the Indians possession and a Yackee basket cut the margin to 59-42. A steal and lay up by Archibeque at the 6:02 mark made it a 59-44 game. Bath's Madison Dackin was fouled by Hannah Blaylock and made her two shots. Frank responded with a make to keep the
deficit at 15 with a score of 61-46. Bath turned the ball over again with a travel and Frank responded again with a bucket to close the gap to 61-48. Bri Smith had an attempt at a conventional three-point play but was short on the foul shot and Bath led 63-48. Yackee went to the line next and made one of her two shots as the score read 63-49. At this point, Natalie Koenig, who had an unusually quiet game up to this point, came to life. The talented junior was fouled on one of her patented drives to the hoop and drained both foul shots at the 3:05 mark to bring the Tribe to within 12 points at 63-51. Maddie Richer then committed a foul and the shots were good putting the Kittens back up 65-51. The Indians, needing a big time basket, got just that from Koenig from beyond the arc as the high flying shot swished through the net bringing the Tribe to within 11. A Yackee steal and basket cut the lead to nine with 2:03 to play. Jenna Hollar was then fouled by Koenig and hit both shots for a 67-56 lead. A pivotal three ball by Richer with 1:17 remaining cut the lead to eight at 67-59. With 56.7 seconds left, Archibeque was good on two foul shots cutting the margin to 67-61. Full court pressure by the Indians paid dividends as Lima Bath lost the ball and Koenig hit a lay up to close the gap to four at 67-63. More great defensive work by the Tribe put the ball in Koenig's hands again as she hit the shot and converted the three point play bringing the Tribe to within one at 67-66. Archibeque's scrappy defensive play continued but this time she fouled Dackin sending her to the line. She made one of two with 32.0 left. Koenig again responded with a drive down the lane to tie the game at 68-68 with 5.4 seconds remaining. Bath missed a three-point attempt and the game was shockingly sent into overtime. Lima Bath (20-3) used 14 points in the overtime session to secure the win and move onto the District title game. But it is believed that their biggest battle came at the hands of the (14-10) Wauseon Lady Indians. Natalie Koenig, after scoring four points in the first half, was the game's leading scorer finishing with 22. Maddie Richer, making some big shots when the Indians need them most tallied 17, and post player Sally Frank, giving up seven inches to her Lima Bath opponent, collected 11 rebounds and had a season-high 17 points. "I am so proud of the effort of my team tonight," coach Ashley Oyer said. "I am not sure many people in the gym thought we could come back from a 20 point deficit. Even though we came up short in the end of overtime, my girls played with so much heart and for that, I am so proud. That is what Wauseon Girls Basketball is about and I am proud to be their coach."

ARCHBOLD: February 27, 2014 The Pettisville Lady Blackbirds are no strangers to adversity. When everything appears to be falling apart, the state ranked Ladybirds' cool demeanor not only carries them through, but also puts them in the winners bracket more often than not. On February 27 though, the Ladybirds met a new kind of adversity in Ayersville. With Dana Fricke, a candidate for postseason awards galore as the tallest girl on the Pettisville team at 5' 10", the Lady Blackbirds were facing a potent paint combination of Molly Hammerstein at 5' 11" and Megan Schubert in the post at 6' 4". It was the damage done by those two that brought the Pettisville season to a close by a 53-48 score. Hammersmith and Fricke led the scoring early as all nine of the first period points for Ayersville came from Hammersmith, while Fricke accounted for six of Pettisville's eleven. It was in the second period that the perimeter defense of Ayersville toughened, making outside shots almost as tough for the Ladybirds as challenging the twin towers in the paint. three free throws from Mikala Avina was all that CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

separated Pettisville from a shutout in the second period as the Lady Pilots carried a 24-14 lead going into the half. The third period saw the Lady Pilots continuing to add the points, but their defense was unable to adjust for Avina, who cranked up her speed and carried her team on her shoulders. Arguably the best point guard in Northwest Ohio, Avina became a blur on the offense, bringing to the fore the adage, 'You can't stop what you can't see.' Pettisville went on a 23-13 run in the third to tie the game going into the fourth. Of those 23 points, 12 came off the hands of Avina, many as a result of fearlessly crashing into the no-man's land of the Ayersville interior. The fourth period was back and forth, but with Avina and Fricke both walking the wire with four fouls apiece, the Lady

Dana Fricke Of Pettisville Named 2013-14 Girls' Basketball Player Of The Year
By Timothy Kays THE VILLAGE REPORTER I'll be honest with you, by no means do I envy the job of Buckeye Border Conference Commissioner, Randy Bachman. It is from his desk and his office which the AllBBC team and BBC Player of the Year announcements are made, and given all the talent throughout the girls' ranks this season, I'd have had a nervous breakdown. Just take a minute and ponder the season passed. You have a 1,000-point scorer in Conner Varner of Stryker. Within the last few weeks, another member of the Millennium Club was added in the person of Hannah Bleikamp of Hilltop. There is the 'third coach' of the Pettisville Lady Blackbirds, Mikala Avina, who I say again is arguably the best point guard and floor general in Northwest Ohio. A strong case can be made for Taylor Griffiths, Kaela Seiler and Alexis Fruchey of Fayette, the explosive Emily Armbruster of Hilltop, and the sweet-shooting Connor Sullivan of Stryker and Lauren Hostetler of Pettisville. There are only so many spaces available for first team, second team and honorable mention players...and only one for the 201314 BBC Player of the Year. Who would be named to the top spot in a year where talent was as abundant as the water in the oceans? Dana Fricke of Pettisville...that's who. In the Pettisville system of Head Coach Jason Waldvogel, there are guards and there are forwards, but there is no center. With Dana on the floor, a center is not needed as she crashes the boards and scores like an elite pivot player. What separates her from the rest is that while the ball is being brought down the court, she can let her defender go right past her to a low post, while she stops and drains threes from the top of the key. Her ball handling skills are that of a #1 guard, she can hit from anywhere like a #2 guard, and she's not at all shy mixing it up in the paint with forwards and centers. There was no true way of labeling her at the beginning of the campaign, but there is now...BBC Player of the Year. Following is the listing of the All-BBC teams from Commissioner Bachman for the 2013-14 season...
