Tsvetana Kirilova Pironkova was born on September 13, 1987 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Her parents are Kiril Enchev Pironkov and Radosveta Chinkova Nikolova. Tsvetana came from a family of athletes and champions. Her father was a canoeing champion, while her mother was a swimming champion. Her father was the one who introduced her to the beautiful game of tennis, and Pironkova held her first tennis racket at 4 years old. Eventually, her father became her tennis coach throughout her entire professional career. According to the Womens Tennis Association (WTA) and Wimbledon, she currently ranks at no. 46 and no. 97, respectively.

When she was 14 years old, Pironkova placed first in the Atlantic Cup International Junior Tournament in Bulgaria. In 2002, she ranked no. 227 in the junior level. Tsvetanas career progressed immediately right after that. In August of that same year, she started her international career as a professional tennis player.

It was a tournament held by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in Bucharest, Romania. She won the qualifying round which comprised of three matches. However, she lost to Romanian national Monica Niculescu.

A month after her defeat in Romania, Pironkova participated in another tournament by ITF . It was in this tournament in Greece, that she won her first international professional event. Throughout the entire leg of the event, Pironkova has won all set but one. The Swiss Tina Schmassmann was her opponent in the finals of the said tournament. The following year, she went on to win three more ITF titles in the singles division. One title was won in Orestiada, Greece and two were won in Istanbul, Turkey.

Professional Career History


Tsvetana participated for the first time in a WTA tournament when she was 17 years old. The event was held on May 2005 in Turkey. She emerged from the qualifying round with two wins, and proceeded on to the semifinals to face Venus Williams. Eventually, she lost to one of the Williams sisters. The Australian Open in 2006 became one of the highlights of Pironkovas career. During the first round of the Open, she defeated Venus Williams. Their match stunned and caught everyone off-guard because of the mere fact that Williams, who was a tenth-seeded player at that time, got defeated by Tsvetana, who had the overall rank of no. 94. Unfortunately, she was not quite so lucky in the following round for she was defeated by Laura Granville.

During Wimbledon of that same year, Pironkova defeated German Anna-Lena Gronefeld, who had a top-20 rank, in the first round. The next round was not quite so good. She lost sets after sets, with Agnieszka Radwanska. By the end of the 2006 season, she had a ranking of no. 62. The year 2007 had a bit of bad luck in the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. Pironkova was not able to get past through the first round in the mentioned tournaments. She was a bit lucky in the US Open when she defeated all her opponents during the qualifying stage. Tsvetana went past the first round of the main draw by beating Russian Olga Puchkova. In the second round, she lost to Justine Henin, who was no. 1 at that time. In 2008, things started to turn for Pironkovas career. She won two matches during the qualifying stage in the Australian Open prior to losing to Dominika Cibulkova. Tsvetana was able to move to the second round, but lost the match to Svetlana Kuznetsova, who was the second-seed in the entire tournament. It was at the Rome Masters of the same year that Pironkova reminded everyone following the tournament that numbers are not everything in tennis. She was able to defeat the worlds third best female tennis player at that time. Tsvetana clashed with Ana Ivanovic during the second round of the tournament. She moves up to the quarterfinals after defeating Victoria Azarenka. Anna Chakvetadze defeated Pironkova in the quarterfinals after three sets.

Pironkova participated in an event held by ITF in Bulgaria in Spetember 2008. She was able to advance to the finals and lost to Nuria Llagostera Vives. Tsvetana capped off the year by ranking no. 46 all over the world.

In the 2009 Australian Open, she won against Karolina Sprem during the first round of the tournament. Soon after, she lost to Marion Bartoli in the second round. During the Wimbledon and French Open of that same year, she was defeated in the first rounds by Jill Craybas.

The Australian Open in 2010 was no different for Pironkova. She was eliminated during in the second round by Shahar Peer. The same fate befell upon her during the first round at the French Open when she lost to Justine Henin. At the Wimbledon tournament, Pironkova advanced to the semifinal by defeating Venus Williams, and eventually lost the spot to the finals to Vera Zvonareva.

After losing to Mandy Minella during the second qualifying match at the US Open, Pironkovas rank increased by 11 points in the overall ranking of women professional tennis players. The year 2011 was a good one for Pironkova. She clashed with Vera Zvonareva, and beat the Russian on the third round. Tsvetana reached the quarterfinals of the tournament after winning against Venus Williams, who was the tournament champion of the previous year. The year ended with Pironkova returning to her no. 46 spot in the rankings. At the 2012 Australian Open, Pironkova was eliminated from the second round by Galina Voskoboeva. She also lost in the second round of the French Open to Francesca Schiavone. In Wimbledon, she was defeated by Russian Maria Sharapova after three sets in the second round. On the other hand, Tsvetana was able to get past the second round at the US Open. During the first round, Pironkova lost to Romina Oprandi at the 2013 Australian Open. She had a series of first-round losses in various tournaments, including the French Open. At Wimbledon, she was able to proceed to the fourth round, but lost to Agnieszka Radwanska. Pironkova was ranked no. 107 at the beginning of the year 2014. She won her first WTA title after defeating Angelique Kerber. The Bulgarian lost in the second round match with Samantha Stosur , winning only two games. She ranked no. 52 after the Australian Open tournament ended.

Style of Play
Tsvetana Pironkova is regarded as one of the top Bulgarian tennis players. The right-handed player prefers to play on grass courts and performs her backhands with two hands. She performs her backhands with two hands. Pironkova is also known for using short balls with forehand slices to set up shots. She also has a remarkable backhand, which is something that players work hard to achieve. According to WTA, the Bulgarian national is currently ranking at no. 46 as of January 2014. Pironkova is most popular for the two events in her career. First, for getting past the quarterfinals of Wimbledon back in 2010. And second, for defeating Venus Williams more than once at Gran Slam events. Pironkova has a WTA title along with six ITF championships under her belt. Aside from being greatly skilled on the tennis court, Tsvetana is also recognized for her beauty. She was included MSNs list of most beautiful female athletes. She disclosed in an interview that winning the Wimbledon is her greatest career dream.
