Ajay Kharkar Pd 1 Maryland 2014 Gubernatorial Election On November 4th, 2014, the next Maryland gubernatorial election will

take place. Incumbent governor, Martin OMalley, has announced that he will not run for another term in office. In the past 50 years, only one Republican has won the Maryland governors seat, and this trend will likely continue in the upcoming election. Anthony Brown, Doug Gansler and Heather Mizeur are the frontrunners for the Democratic Party nomination, and most likely the governors office. Brown, running on a campaign focused on education and the economy, is the favorite in the polls, followed by Ganslers campaign, prioritized around creating jobs, and then Mizeur and her progressive left-wing campaign. Anthony Brown, the favorite for this election, is well qualified for the position of governor. Brown is a Harvard graduate, undergrad and law. He served in the Army as a captain for five years, and is a colonel in the Reserves. During his service in Baghdad, he earned a Bronze Star medal. Brown worked as a clerk in a court of appeals and as a lawyer at WilmerHale, before starting his climb from Delegate in the Maryland House to Majority Whip to Lt. Governor. (Lieutenant Governor) Brown, currently Lt. Governor of Maryland, has chosen Ken Ulman, a County Executive of Howard County, as his running mate in the election. Through his time as Lt. Governor and in his campaign for the governors seat, Brown has shown specific interest in creating jobs in the private sector and strengthening the education programs in Maryland. Brown believes that creating a competitive workforce is the best way to create jobs in Maryland. (The Brown Ulman Compact) To do this, Brown will attempt to grow businesses, large and small. Brown also is campaigning for a reform in primary education, and trying to implement a universal pre-kindergarten program in Maryland. This is the biggest push

in Browns education plan to keep Maryland as the countrys number one public school system in the country. Brown also is running on a platform of giving more help to veterans, an issue to which he has personal ties; and a platform to reduce domestic violence, an issue that he has been campaigning for since he was in the House of Delegates. Brown is the favorite in the election, as he has been since he announced his campaign. In a poll in October, 41 percent of likely voters said they would vote for Brown, almost double the amount than the next highest campaigner. (Wagner) If Brown wins, he will be the first AfricanAmerican governor of Maryland. Brown does have much stronger support among AfricanAmericans than any of his opponents, which boosts his numbers by a good proportion. He is also endorsed by many high level government officials, including Gov. OMalley, both Senators from Maryland, and representatives from four districts. Doug Gansler, despite numerous campaign stumbles, is the second choice for this election. Gansler graduated Yale undergrad and Virginia Law School. Gansler also served as a clerk in a Court of Appeals and as lawyer. He then went on to become the Attorney General of Maryland and president of the National Association of Attorneys General. (Attorney General) Gansler, currently attorney general, has chosen Jolene Ivey, a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, as his running mate. Doug Gansler has run his campaign based primarily on creating new jobs in Maryland. Gansler plans on doing this through creating a healthier middle class. Gansler plans to bring manufacturing to Maryland, which has a job multiplier effect. (Jobs and the Economy) Gansler runs on other campaign platforms as well, many of which he has been supporting as attorney general. Gansler, more than the other two candidates, is a strong supporter of the ACA, and has

been since its arrival in Maryland. Cleaning the Bay and more environmentally friendly laws are other issues that Gansler will continue his fight for as governor. Minority equality, which Gansler has fought for in the past with the first Asian American prosecutors and Affirmative Action, is another issue that Gansler will continue pushing for as governor. Gansler is second to Brown in the polls, by a decent margin, because of a couple important campaign stumbles caused by the press. The first came out before Gansler had even officially announced his campaign, with his statement that Brown is using his race to get elected, given in a live press conference. After that, it came out that Gansler had told police officers to speed and run red lights. Both of these put Gansler back in the polls, but the last stumble is what really tripped him up. Pictures came out off of Instagram of Gansler at a teenage party, in which there was clearly underage drinking. It could not be proven, but due to Ganslers position on numerous committees against underage smoking and drinking and his prior mistakes, this accusation put him far enough back to give Brown a solid lead. Heather Mizeur, though a distant third, is still a viable competitor for the office. Mizeur graduated from the University of Illinois and moved to Maryland, where she began her political career. She was on the Takoma Park City Council before working on the John Kerry campaign, and currently works with President Obama and the White House on health reform. She co-owns a business with her wife, and is openly gay. If elected, she will be the first openly gay governor in the US. Mizeur, a member of the House of Delegates, has chosen Delman Coates, a pastor, to be her running mate. Mizeur has a campaign based on very liberal politics and ideas, much more so than Brown or Gansler. She shares the desire for job creation and better education systems, but after

that her ideas differ from her opponents. The most controversial plan she will implement if elected is a full marijuana legalization plan, following in the footsteps of Colorado. (Riley) This plan is individual to her, and displays a huge policy difference between Mizeur and her opponents. She is also planning on reducing natural gas production and treatment and a stronger push for LGBT equality. Mizeurs chances in this election are slim, but she still has support in some areas. She suffered a major blow when Equality Maryland, the biggest LGBT rights group in Maryland, endorsed Lt. Gov. Brown. Mizeur has her own endorsements from numerous people in the Maryland Congress and interest groups, but there are fewer of them than what Brown or Gansler has. Lt. Gov. Brown is the favorite for this election with his education and economic plans, with Ganslers job creation in second and Mizeurs liberal plans third. Brown has many endorsements, and is leading in the polls, with a plan for improving education quality and creating jobs. Despite Ganslers mistakes, he is second in the polls with his job creation plan and continuations of his projects as Attorney General. Mizeur is in a distant third with her marijuana legalization and LGBT movements at the center of her campaign, though she also is focused on job creation and education.
