Notting Hill and Northolt

Hypothesis: Quality of life is better in Notting Hill than in Northolt Quality of life: The level well-being and how stratified you are with your local area with its social, economic and environmental qualities. Inequality: Inequality varies by both kinds of settlement geography and by the social and economic character of areas. Deprivation: the state of being deprived: social deprivation; a cycle of deprivation and violence Access to services: the extent to which a member can obtain services at the time they are needed. Quality of life is the general well-being of individuals and societies, which can be measured in financial terms, social terms, environmental terms; it is harder to make objective or long-term measurements to the quality of life experienced by the areas. Inequalities exist in all urban areas. Inequality means extreme differences between poverty and wealth, as well as in people's well-being and access to things like jobs, housing, and education. Inequalities may occur in: housing, employment opportunities, access to services, transport, access to green space safety and crime. The reason I chose this hypothesis is because I wanted to find out more about these areas, Northolt is a very quiet area compared to the busy Notting Hill, I wanted to investigate and prove that quality of life in Notting Hill is better than Northolt.

Northolt
Northolt is a town in the London borough of Ealing; it is considered a town in north-west London. Northolt has a population of about 15,183 which has decreased from 1991 where the population was about 32,000. Northolt has a London Underground and a number of different London bus routes. The crime rate in Northolt is 25 in a month.

Notting Hill
However Notting Hill is an area London, close to the north-western corner of Kensington Gardens, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Notting Hill has a population of 2,163; the area has a high reputation with its fashionable areaknown for attractive terraces of large Victorian townhouses, and high-end shopping and restaurants. Notting Hill also has a London Underground and a number of different London bus routes. The crime rate in Notting Hill is 44 in a month.

To carry out this investigation, I had to travel to both these areas using my hypothesis and a number of different methods which were: surveys, map plotting (green areas, shops and residential areas) and work out the ages of the buildings, and we measured the level of noise. We worked in groups of three and walked around both these areas, first we visited Northolt which is our home town or for some of us where our school is located and we were very familiar with the area. We had 2 hours to walk around plot our maps and take surveys, we took out two surveys and managed to complete the map and measured the level of noise and the ages of buildings. In the afternoon we travelled to Notting Hill where we carried out the same methods in groups of three, we used the map to locate ourselves as we were not familiar to the area. We used the same methods in Notting Hill as we did in Northolt, we had 2 hours and we finished quite early this means we were successful in completing our surveys and maps and we took pictures. This investigation helps us find out more about quality of life in different areas and determine is the quality of life is better in Northolt or Notting Hill. Environmental survey: We also took environmental surveys within both areas; this helped us find out more about the area. The information we collected were from different roads we scored different elements of the urban landscape according to its impact these included: noise, traffic, litter, size of gardens, appearance of gardens, maintenance of buildings, vandalism, housing type and age of housing scoring from -2 to 2.

In Notting Hill, one of the roads we observed was Ladbroke Terrace, the noise level 0, this meant the area was not too noisy or not too quiet it was in the middle. The traffic scored within the area scored -1 this means it was busy and it is a crowded area, the litter was scored -1 this indicates there is a lot of litter and the gardens draw on average of 2 this means the gardens are well looked after. The housing type was terrace and the age of housing is Georgian and Victorian. However in Northolt, one of the roads we observed was Kingston Close, the noise level within the area was 2 this means the neighbourhood was quiet as it is not too busy, the traffic was scored 2 this means it is well looked after. The gardens were scored on average -1 this means they were tidy and not kept well. The housing types were semi- detached and the ages of housing was inter war council and inter war private. Methodology: Method: Land use survey 18th of November Northolt from 9:00 till 11:45 Notting Hill from 12:30 till 15:00 Description: We were given two maps to plot; this meant using the colour code sheet and the maps to plot the different industries, shops and housing in the local areas. This allowed us to see what the areas consisted of. Later on we used the codes to match the colour coded sheet and coloured them in to make it look more obvious and clear to us. Reason for choice: This helps us view the area in many different ways; we can compare the housing, the amount of different shops around the area and how many there are and how many houses and flats are in the local areas, we can also judge if the houses are big or small, this also lets us judge is the area has any green spaces or how many spaces is taken up in the area. This lets us view what the areas have and the quality of life. We did this because it gives us a better insight into the area and what the public people thought about the areas we were investigating. This gave us a lot of information like the schools, care, housing and safety which result in the quality of life in the local area which helps us come to our own conclusion. This lets us decide where the quality of life is better and where the buildings are more old or new in both areas. We did this because it gave us more information on the buildings in the areas and what the area was like.

Environmental Quality Survey 18th of November Northolt from 9:00 till 11:45 Notting Hill from 12:30 till 15:00

We were given questionnaires with a few questions about each area, we walked around both Northolt and Notting Hill asking people if they would like to take our questionnaire, most of the people we asked were happy to take our questionnaires however some did not want to be disturbed or answer any of the questions. We were given a survey too look at and answer each, these was depended on noise, traffic, litter, green space, and age of buildings and decide the age of the buildings we saw from both the areas, Notting Hill and Northolt.

Analysis of pictures Both these maps show the difference between both Notting Hill and Northolt. The map to the right is a map of Northolt and the map to the left is a map of Notting Hill, as you can see there are massive differences between both areas. Northolt has more green space than Notting Hill, the gardens are bigger and the houses are usually bigger because Northolt does not have that many shops or services than Notting Hill. Northolt is also more openly spaced than Notting Hill because Notting Hill is a busy area with businesses on the high street where as Northolt is more of a neighbourhood town. The area pointed is a park in Northolt, as you can see Northolt overall has a lot of green space which changes its quality of life as people have access to a parks and the pollution of the area could be lower than Notting Hills due to having less cars on the road and more greener areas.

The arrow points at a few houses in the area, these houses are quiet big compared to houses in Notting Hill, they have bigger gardens and bigger houses, and this can improve quality of life within an area because people may want to have bigger houses.

There is not that many shops or services in the area compared to Notting Hill, this can affect the quality of life in the area as people many have travel far distances to access services to get what they need

As you can see Northolt has bigger roads but not many cars drive on these roads, it has little traffic and less car pollution. Bigger roads could be better because it decreases traffic congestion.

Notting Hill has smaller houses with smaller gardens this can be a disadvantage of living there because people may limit themselves to smaller houses and they could have bigger families so less people most commonly live in Notting Hill.

There is hardly any green space and it is not openly spaced out.
