Explanation based on the pedagogical principles

The Jays is the poem that I chose to teach to the students. Based on the pedagogical principles, this poem can be taught to students from Year Three onwards. This is because in my opinion, the students can learn how to understand abstract meanings from this age onwards. This poem contains abstract meanings that the students may find it difficult to understand. So, by giving input to them, they might learn to understand the meanings of the words and they might be able to understand abstract meanings later. Thus, this poem is suitable for students from Year Three onwards. Besides, this poem might attract the interest to the students. First, this poem is about a bird, which is an animal. Generally, students like to learn about animals. They get excited when it comes to learn about animals. Thus, this poem can be adapted to teach different kinds of animals. I can modify the poem using different animals as the character in the poem and teach the students the poem and also about the animal in the poem; its features and so on. Moreover, this poem tells a story. Thus this can arouse the interest of the students because generally students love to listen to stories. Thus, this poem can attract the interest of the students. Besides, this poem is suitable to be taught to students of intermediate or advanced level. Even though the poem is short and simple, it contains words and phrases that are quite difficult. This may be difficult for the weak students to understand. It is more suitable for the intermediate or advance student. This can also be related to the background knowledge of the students where the students can relate the words and phrases to the previous knowledge of the students. Thus, they can understand the meaning of the poem. Based on the content of the poem, it is basically short and simple but it may be difficult to understand as it may have an abstract meaning. Thus, input is needed to understand the abstract meaning so that it is simpler to understand. This poem contains mostly familiar words that the students may understand. Difficult words needs to be taught by the teacher or the students can use the dictionary to find the meanings of the words. Thus, students can add up the vocabulary list of their own. Moreover, this poem is readable. The value that can be given emphasis in this poem is love among family members. In this poem, it talks about the birds and its babies that are to born. This poem can be adapted and can be used to teach about family and emphasis on the value of love among family members. This

helps students to appreciate their families and the members in their family. It is important to instill this value in students and they apply it in their lives. The next principle is culture. This poem about a bird; the jay bird is not found in our country. So it does not really emphasis on our culture. Thus, to relate it with our culture, I will adapt it with other local birds around the country. Nonetheless, knowing a new kind of a bird is a new knowledge to the students and it is not wrong to acquire a new knowledge. Thus, this poem is suitable for teaching songs and poetry in primary school.
