Section 7: Implementation and Evaluation

If previously funded by United States Steel Foundation please provide a brief report on the results of the grant (i.e., amount of funding, what was accomplished, challenges encountered, and corrective actions taken). (2000 character limit)

In 2012, Ivy Tech received $50,000 to help purchase an instrumentation trainer critical to developing students skills necessary for employment in the application of Process Control learning systems. Leadership staffing changes resulted in the delay of ordering the equipment. The new Dean of Ivy Techs School of Technology and School of Applied Sciences and Pre-Engineering has now had the chance to review and evaluate the program needs. The instrumentation trainer equipment has been ordered and the funds are now encumbered. Upon receipt of the instrumentation trainer, the College will be able to expand the experiential segment of the Industrial Maintenance curriculum and provide training in Industrial Instrumentation including: Flow, Process Control Learning, Thermal Process Control Learning and Analytical Process Control Learning systems. This upgrade of equipment will allow Ivy Tech to add a class in the Industrial Maintenance program for Industrial Instrumentation and provide skill enhancements for students to meet training requirements of Industries employers in manufacturing and gain additional knowledge to pass entry tests for employment.
Please provide us with additional information that you deem vital to our review of your grant application. (upload) Please describe the project deliverables and outcomes (2000 character limit)

1. The electro-mechanical trainers and industrial piping system trainers will enable Ivy Tech to offer classes in instrumentation and Pipefitting Basics that could not otherwise be offered without this equipment. 2. Instrumentation training will provide students in the Industrial Technology program with skills and competencies for instrumentation applications necessary for a wide range of employment opportunities. 3. Continuity of training from classroom to shop floor provides real life learning opportunities. 4. The electro-mechanical maintenance training cells greatly enhance the training and preparation of students pursuing the US Steel Pre-Learner curricula program and essentially any School of Technology student. 5. The maintenance trainers support Ivy Techs commitment to continuo us improvement and maintaining current and technically relevant education. 6. This equipment helps address and support the content of the Industrial Technology courses and programs with global competitiveness for Indianas workforce and businesses and advanc es the States economic development and overarching goals.

Comment [c18]: Will the instrumentation training still be affected by the new equipment?

7. To become a recognized leader in providing fundamental, applied, and technical knowledge and skills in programs that support Indianas citizens and its economy, Ivy Tech offers the training that is currently sought after and currently relevant to prepare our students for todays jobs. 8. Ivy Tech demonstrates their awareness and responsiveness to workplace needs and trends. 9. Approximately, 40% of questions on regional employers new maintenance techn ician employment exams are derived from the competencies taught. This illustrates Tthe versatility and utility of this type of upgraded training system equipment. is underscored when you consider that 40% of the questions on regional employers new maintenance technician employment exams are derived from the competencies taught. 10. Students participating in the instrumentation class and using the implementation of trainers within other Industrial Technology classes will be better prepared to pass employment tests such as the Ramsey test that has an instrumentation component.
Explain the assessment strategies that will be used to define and measure the programs success (2000 character limit)

Comment [c19]: Is this still relevant to the new equipment that will be purchased?

The instructional use of the hands-on instrumentation trainers will prepare students to gain the necessary knowledge for entrance requirements for jobs in the industry maintenance departments. We anticipate students scores on the Ramsey and other Industry maintenance technician pre-employment tests will increase as a result of students use of the maintenance trainers and enrollment in the instrumentation course. This will be demonstrated through responses to surveys, contact between faculty and students, and feedback from employers. End of unit tests allow instructors to monitor students knowledge of skills so instructors can go over areas of concern while students are still in the course. A survey of Industrial Technology instructors will provide data on how the new maintenance trainer equipment contributes to students increase in instrumentation knowledge as a result of handson training that is required for current day industrial maintenance technicians. We will request feedback from faculty, students and employers to determine whether the program has been successful in increasing employment placement. The teaching staff will be asked to report on capstone projects such as problem solving and teamwork built around the enhanced maintenance equipment concept.
Please describe the involvement of stakeholders (e.g. Board, Target Population, Community Members) (2000 character limit)

Comment [c20]: Are these what will be purchased with the new funds?
