Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls May 3, 2013 Sandra Tenneson Berkeley Springs, WV 25411 Apr 26, 2013 Everyone else has covered what I came here to say. Why destroy a historical building that can still be useful? The fact that it is a historical building should be enough to keep it! I hope all of our effort isn't for anything and that we can save this amazing place! Shauni Mulder thief river falls, MN 56701 Apr 12, 2013 I used to live in Fergus Falls and I trained as a human service tech there at the kirkbride building in 1982 and my ex husband worked there as well. My aunt worked there too her name was Jean Boen and a neighbor alice lyng. So this needs to be saved and used in some way other than to be torn down. It would be a shame to tear down a beautiful campus as the fergus falls state hospital as been there its a landmark for the city as well. I think there could be many uses for the kirkbride as well as the other buildings as a resort hotel as fergus falls area is good for all sorts of activities thru out the year Take a look at some of the other suggestions that you have received as well. thank you for listening. Carol LaValle Royalton, MN 56374 Apr 3, 2013 Minnesota doesnt always perserve our history. I believe that we have to keep the good and the bad. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls Just found out that my great-grandfater (Herbert Sargent) died there in 1919. After reading the history of the hospital and it's buildings, i have come to believe that my great-grandfather recieved the best care available for the times. Thank God for people like Dr. Kirkbride, who saw value and didn't dehumanize the mentally ill. My own grandfather hid the truth from our family and we didn't even know who our great-grandfather was until recently. karen sargent Rapid River, MI 49878 Sep 7, 2012 They give guided tours on Fridays. Tim Long Alexandria, MN 56308 May 7, 2012 Rachel Manthey Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 7, 2012 Dear representative: Please request an extension of the Minnesota State grant dollars for the Kirkbride building in Fergus Falls. The presence of the Kirkbride building has generous economic worth. Give time, opportunities can flourish within this building through reuse and redevelopment. Rather than believing that the Kirkbride will hamper economic growth, consider it a critical element in making it happen. Thank you. Andrea Johnson Alborn, MN 55702 May 7, 2012 This building is stunning, the architecture is once in a lifetime. Small towns thrive on little celebrities like this building. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls There is no greater tool to teach the coming generations of our past, like seeing, touching, and walking inside of history frozen in time. Dawn Ferrebee Salem, WV 26301 May 7, 2012 Richard Lee Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 7, 2012 These Kirkbride buildings cannot be replaced or replicated, I find it ludicrous that anyone could even consider tearing one down, they are part of our nation's history. In Europe things like this would not occur, they actually value their history over there. Danvers State Hospital's Kirkbride was razed in Massachusetts a few years ago, and all that did was waste a beautiful building, and replace it with a shoddily and corruptly constructed one that will need to be replaced 20 years from now (if that). Please consider saving this building, there are many uses for them and there are not many left. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls This complex is priceless........ It is what gives Fergus Falls it distinction from "anyplace" USA.. It will be a short distance to "noplace" if the administration moves to demolish. Only the foolish community will make the choice between historic preservation and economic development. Economic development and historic preseration go hand in hand. The city of Fergus can effectively utilize its historic built environment to meet the economic, social and cultural needs of its citizens well into the future. The first and last thing that stands between any of us and a better place to live is the belief that such a future is possible. If we don't believe it is possible, we will not aim for it. If we don't aim for a better community we are certain to not get there. Tearing down the Kirkbride will not make our community better. What makes a city great----- is livability. A truely livable city is one that makes us feel personally connected to it in a meaningful way. It is hard to feel that sort of connection to a place that has no distinctive character. Our Kirkbride complex is this the distinction. This is not only our inheritance but our legacy. I ask the city to press the reset button. Lets start a visioning session with the community. We need an extension. Richardson Complex indicated it took six years- It is also 500,000 square feet. This community needs unity. Laurie Mullen Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 7, 2012 Tressa Marshfield, WI 54449 May 7, 2012 Steven Janssen Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 7, 2012 A reuse for the Kirbride that would serve our community and be beneficial to its leading employers and businesses while also definitely benefitting both the region and the state is growing in attention and serious consideration by parties across the nation. It is Vitally important that we present a singular commitment as a community to the preservation of the facility and its rededication to an economic development driver to the outside world. Worthy ends are severely damaged by evident local negativity or lack of commitment when viewed by those outside the community. The actions of our public leaders speak so strongly. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls I am a photographer working on a documentary of historic mental institutions and the history of mental illness across the U.S. (www.theemptyplaces.com). I was fortunate enough to visit Fergus Falls State Hospital a couple of years ago and photographed/documented its history. Of the 50+ institutions that I have photographed across the U.S., the one in Fergus Falls in unique and an extremely important piece of history in the United States. It is an incredibly well preserved Kirkbride, something that is very rare. This integrity is important architecturally as well as historically. While I understand that such old buildings often cost a lot to maintain, I believe this piece of history is worth the cost to preserve. While the history of mental illness caries many stigmas with it, and these old buildings can carry a dark past with them, these are our American version of Castles. They are stunning. Please don't destroy an important piece of American history! The RTC gives Fergus something uniquely beautiful that was once a thriving part of our community.... and I believe it can be again in the future. We need to postpone demolition as long as possible to maximize our chance of finding a viable way to make it work. Karen Terry Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 5, 2012 I am signing, in spite of having to receive email from MoveOn.org. I read most of the posts to see if people from Fergus supported saving this beautiful building and grounds in their community. It is so sad that we are willing to spend so much money on waste, yet willing to throw away our heritage. I can think of so many ways to make this campus an asset to the Community of Fergus Falls, and revive these buildings. Since I worked with someone who had shock treatments there, and lost her memory of her childrens' childhoods, I took note of the comments about it being haunted - but if Sioux Falls can re-use the stockyards, it seems that this could be a real attraction for the community. When I come to town and see those towers from a distance, it is so cool and makes me proud that we have that in Fergus. . If you take it away, Fergus really has nothing of character. There is so much potential for Fergus and its growth, it is really hard to believe that the city council is so blind that it is sad to even think of tearing it down. It scares me to think of the people on the city council that are suppose to represent the people - not their own agenda. So, why destroy a 100+ building when there are so many more years to find a use for it. It's history and architecture are worth far more than that!! Take a note from the European countries. Image what we all would be missing out on if the Colossuem, Acropolis, Sistine Chapel, and countless others would have been destroyed just because someone didn't care. If you destroy the building, that will be your legacy to FF. Is that what you want your legacy to be. Future generations will remeber this generation as the ones who didn't care enought to save a beautiful piece of architecture and historical landmark. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls May 4, 2012 Please preserve these classic old buildings!!! They represent bygone times, and have character that most new modern buildings are seriously lacking. Most of those are sheet rock and vinyl siding and won't last more than 40 years anyway. It is unfortunate to hear of historic buildings being destroyed because of financial situations. Those are temporary, historical preservation can be permanent!! Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls Kris Olson Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 4, 2012 Barb Goudreau Comstock Park, MI 49321 May 4, 2012 This is a beautiful building, it could be restored and used for many things such as apartments, rec center, school, or many other things, something for kids and families to go to maybe roller skating rink/ theatre/community center. Maybe even a venue for weddings where the entire building can be used for ceremony reception and much more. It would be a shame to destroy a piece of history so large and beautiful. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls Very much hoping this historical landmark means more to the city of Fergus Falls than the few dollars that could be made off of the destruction of hundreds of years of history. Nichole Roell Alexandria, MN 56308 May 4, 2012 In our consumptive, throw-away society, how wasteful to destroy something so beautiful and potentially useful. This striking facility helped draw us to move to Fergus Falls. We thought, what a forward thinking community that would have such a unique and historic place. Whereas every community looks the same after widening residential streets and adding all the popular chain stores and restaurants, the Kirkebride is part of Fergus Falls' identity. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls Preserve the only history you have there... Brian Wierima Detroit Lakes, MN 56501 May 4, 2012 The Kirkbride is just a group of buildings. It's part of the history of Fergus Falls and the state of MN. It was a place that thousands called home. It was a place that gave people hope in their otherwise lost and confused lives. Laurie Bauck Milaca, MN 56353 May 4, 2012 The study shows it would cost more to tear it down than what the land value would be. Once it has been torn down, we will never ever be able to get such a historic building back again. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls I grew up in Fergus. This building is a Historical Landmark. If nothing else, please turn it into a museum. I love driving past it every time I come home. It just wouldn't be the same without it. So many people in the community have ties to that building. Trisha Johnstone Hinesville, GA 31313 May 4, 2012 Sarah Jones Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 4, 2012 I might live all the way down here but I come to your state and spend lots of money specifically to see that building. It would be wise of you to keep it, you would be surprised how many tourists come from far away to see it.. Justin earsing new orleans, LA 70117 May 4, 2012 Both my grandmother and great-grandmother spent time in the state hospital for depression. Tearing down the site would be a great disservice to the thousands who called it home. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls This building is an amazing part of history for Fergus Falls. Destroy the building and lose business from me in that town. Christina Johnson Breckenridge, MN 56520 May 4, 2012 This is one building Fergus Falls can be proud of. It is the one thing Fergus has that sets it apart from the rest of the communities. Really you have a great opportunity to do something extraordinary. It must be saved. History must be perserved. Everyday on the way to and from school, our bus would pass the Kirbride. When I got my drivers license, I continued taking this route. Almost everyday of my life, I would take in the beauty of the amazing architecture of the building. To me, it is what makes Fergus Falls my home town. I cringe at possobility of telling my future children and grand children that there used to be a magnificent building in its spot. Don't take away the history of our town. Stop the wrecking ball - Save the Kirkbride in Fergus Falls This building can still be standing in another hundred years if no one tears it down. It's the heart of Fergus Falls. Tracey Kiehl Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 4, 2012 I have never been so disgusted as I am at the thought of thecity council of Fergus Falls making a decision to not only destroy a Historic National Treasure... but using 7 MILLION dollars in Minnesota TAXPAYER money to do so .. in this economy. For shame on all the Fergus Falls city council members. Detroying this building and creating 'green space' is the most ridiculous decision and shows that the Fergus Falls city council has no respect for history. 'Green Space' will not bring tourists to our city. Susan Kay Wildung Fergus Falls, MN 56537 May 4, 2012 Think how many people attend the weekly tours...If the Kirkbride portion of the building was repaired, cleaned and various types of stores were opened, people would come, just to see the building...Save the Kirkbride.
