Mobile and Portals

Challenge: Keeping up with Expectations

As consumers increasingly use online self-service functions on the web and on their smart phones, they have come to expect the ability to interact with their insurance provider through these channels. Similarly, agents and brokers also prefer doing business with insurers via online transactions as a way to streamline business processes and improve customer service. To meet these expectations, insurers may need to develop new (or update current) Internet portals and mobile applications to enable real-time, self-service transactions. However, companies can find it hard to keep up with ever increasing stakeholder expectations and ever changing web technologies. Common threats to success include: Inflexible technologyLegacy core systems were not designed with the web in mind and insurers must rebuild the same functionality and logic to create a web presence. Maintenance burdenMaking even simple changes to the portal can be a significant project, as the same functionality needs to be implemented and tested in multiple systems. Lack of resourcesCompeting priorities for scarce technology skills within the company can cause mobile and portal projects to be delayed, resulting in lack of responsiveness.

Edge Architecture

Figure 2: Mobile and Portals are implemented using the Edge framework

Mobile and Portal applications leverage Guidewire core systems through the Edge framework, which is a collection of web service APIs that facilitate reuse of the core system configuration. This means that subsequent core system changes to business workflow, rules, and product model are reflected in Mobile and Portals with minimum duplication of effort. This allows the applications to be thin and minimize the amount of business logic that has to be implemented, tested, and maintained outside the core system. The Mobile and Portal applications provide flow control and presentation management while passing the real work down to the core system. This makes them easy to learn, extend, maintain, test, and deploy. The Edge architecture focuses on ease of adoption of new web technologies so Mobile and Portal applications can evolve as needed. It enables development of a User Interface that uses flexible industry standard technology, which allows insurers to utilize existing skillsets to develop a customer experience that is consistent with their brand. The applications deliver an interactive and modern user experience using the latest web development techniques. Mobile applications are developed to be device agnostic through the use of cross-platform standards and frameworks. In addition, the Edge architecture has been designed to allow Mobile and Portal applications to work seamlessly with the insurers existing web and portal infrastructure (e.g., Content Management System)
