SHOE DRIVE IP P R E V I O U S I N F O R M A T I O N -- before final product.

Materials needed for shoe drive (need to complete): 4 rubber maid boxes in order to place specific shoes o Male adults o Women adults o Girls o Boys Transportation o Transportation to translate all the shoes collected to the community you are donating the shoes. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Contact information from ideal schools to participate in the shoe drive. This is the basic information in order to get the contact of the department that organizes any events: San Silvestre: Phone:(511) 241-3334 Email: colegio@sansilvestre.edu.pe Markham: Lower school: o Phone: 315 8700, o Fax: 3158701 Upper school: o Phone: 315 6750 Cambridge: Phone: 254 0107 Phone: 254 0163 Newton: Phone: 479 0460 Email: college@newton.edu.pe ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The process I followed when I did the shoe drive at FDR for the first time. 1. Contact the elementary school council. This allowed me to have a quick meeting with the ES principal and the director of the student council, where I explained the entire project and what was that I wanted to accomplish through the shoe drive. Before even talking to

the student council, have the community and location you want to donate the shoes to in order to give as much information possible, making your product credible. Be open to any ideas and accept any suggestions as the school may require other ideas you didnt have in mind. Separate with tow weeks of anticipation the dates you would like the shoe drive to take place (the shoed drive should last two weeks). Within the time you have left, make sure to announce in the bulletin board or any mean of communication to students and parents about the shoe drive; advertise it as much as you can. Once the shoe drive is started place the rubber maid taper wares outside of the elementary office (a central location) and place indicators as to where the shoes belongs. Divide by gender and ages. a. Observations: i. Initially the shoe drive was meant to be only for little kid shoes, girls and boys, but as the shoe drive began I noticed that people where donating all type of shoes which was unexpected. Because parents where also donating their shoes I had to add more containers for the shoes to be organized and not mixed up. The main focus is kids, but if parents and students have bigger shoes to donate they are 100% welcome. Depending on the amount of shoes that are being donated, make sure to collect the shoes from the boxes and take them home, so that students can keep on filling in the boxes. Its necessary to be very organized and check the shoes once every two days, if the boxes are filled up take the shoes home, if not wait an extra day. a. Observations: i. Most of the students did not take their pairs of shoes in a separate bag, and its not that I was expecting people to do so. Yet, because the shoes where just placed in the containers, once I collected them in big trash bags, they where all mixed up, so at home I had to separate pair by pair. b. Solution: i. Try to include a bag dispenser beside the containers to that students can put in pair by pair in separate bags so that the process of division is easier. In fact, by separating them in bags you assure yourself that individual shoes will not get lost. Once the shoe drive is over, make sure to separate all of the pairs in separate bags and place them in containers to transport them to the community you are planning to donate them to. Once the shoes are delivered its important to thank the school community for their collaboration. In fact, providing the pictures or even video form the repartition is important for credibility, letting them know that they did something great for other people. By giving them these details they will participate in the next shoe drive as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Possible ideas for shoe drives (in progress): If possible, make some of the days more interactive. Maybe have activities that relate to the issue of the shoe drive. o Once day present to the entire ES school the whole issue of children in Huaraz, or the community you are helping, and share a quick anecdote as to what shocked you in order to start with this initiative

Play any games that simulate the problem children are encountering, to show the kids that they need their help. o The whole idea of making some of the days from the collecta interactive is to make the shoe drive creative. Its important for this initiate to stand out due to the powerful issue it addresses and the way it is organized. Its not only important to collect the shoes, but also let everyone understand WHY we are collecting the shoes. Complementary goods: o Make fun interactive games where people need to pay to participate, but instead of paying with money, they pay with complementary goods, which are good not old quality socks. The idea of donating socks together with the shoes is fun and it makes the shoe drive more creative. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Contact other NGOs or organizations that started small and became known around other countries. When contacting them ask them question about the organization of their project and how they showed other people the process you need to follow in order to implement the project. Muchsimas Gracias, Barbara
