Applying for an Australia Awards Scholarship


Australia Awards Scholarships in Nepal Australias international development assistance in Nepal aims to alleviate poverty and provide a peace dividend by focusing on service delivery in health and education sectors, and by providing jobs through micro-enterprise development. Most of Australia's assistance to Nepal is delivered through the Government of Nepal and in partnership with other donors and multilateral organisations. Scholarships to study in Australia are a key element of Australias support and integral to the Australian Governments development cooperation across South Asia. Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders for development. Through study and research, recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australia. Applicants will be assessed for their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, their potential to impact on development challenges in Nepal. Applications are strongly encouraged from eligible women, people with disability and people from traditionally marginalised groups and remote regions of Nepal. Priority fields of study The priority areas of study for Nepal are: Health Education Livelihoods/Poverty Alleviation (focusing on microenterprise development) Governance (Economics, Public Policy and Public Financial Management) Water Resource Management Australia Awards Scholarships will also be open to applicants from the Government of Nepal in the field of International Relations. Further information is available at: http://australiaawardsnepal.org Level of study Australia Awards Scholarships These Scholarships provide citizens of Nepal with the opportunity to obtain a postgraduate qualification (Masters or PhD) at an Australian tertiary institution. Scholarships in the Water Resource Management priority area are available at Masters level only. Half are awarded to women. Australia Awards Benefits Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian education institution, including any preparatory training. Scholarship recipients will generally receive the following: return air travel a one off establishment allowance on arrival full tuition fees contribution to living expenses introductory academic program Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the Scholarship supplementary academic support and fieldwork allowance (for research students only).

Eligibility criteria Australia Awards applicants must meet all eligibility requirements detailed in the Scholarships Policy Handbook, available at: http://aid.dfat.gov.au/Publications/Pages/scholarhandbook.aspx In addition to these basic eligibility requirements, candidates from Nepal must also meet the following country specific conditions: all applicants will require an IELTS (academic) score average of 6.5 or above (with no individual band less than 6.0) or an

equivalent TOEFL or PTE paperbased/internet based test score applications from women, people with disabilities and members of traditionally marginalised groups will be considered for eligibility with an IELTS (academic) overall score of 6.5 or above (with no individual band less than 5.0) or an equivalent TOEFL or PTE paper-based/internet based test score. However, if they are offered Australia Awards, they must meet the English language requirement of their courses have at least three years work experience relevant to a nominated field of study.

This needs to be done well before the application closing date. Supporting documents Applicants must submit with their application all of the relevant supporting documents listed in the Scholarships Policy Handbook. Applicants must also provide the following documents to meet the specific requirements for Nepal:

Special conditions Applicants must also meet the following country specific conditions: applicants from the public sector who are nominated by the Government of Nepal must have their nominations submitted to the Australian Embassy in Kathmandu by the Nepalese Ministry of Finance applicants wishing to study a Masters by Research or a PhD must identify a supervisor. Scholarships in the Water Resource Management priority area are available at Masters level only. recipients of scholarships are required to return to Nepal for at least two years after completing their studies awards for 2015 must be taken in that year, they cannot be transferred to a future year specific requirements of academic institutions in each proposed course (including English language proficiency, grade point average, relevant academic experience)

Professional and personal leadership attributes

Applications will be assessed independently for academic qualifications, work-experience, English language proficiency, commitment to development and social inclusion. Applicants will be short-listed by the Australian Embassy Kathmandu and interviewed by a panel comprising of representatives of the Australian Government, the Government of Nepal and an independent expert. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for interview.

Preparatory training All successful applicants will be required to attend a visa and mobilisation session and a pre-departure briefing Outcomes All applicants will receive notification as to whether they have been successful by the end of September 2014.

If a document is not in English, a certified translated copy must be submitted. See the Scholarships Policy Handbook for requirements of certification. Notes: Applicants should request transcripts from universities. If universities refuse to provide transcripts directly to applicants, contact the Australia Awards Office in Nepal for a letter of request. Transcripts must be received by the closing dates for applications. Referee reports in different formats cannot be accepted and may make applications ineligible. Contact the Australia Awards Office in Kathmandu to clarify reference requirements. Research applicants shortlisted for a selection interview must submit a well-developed research proposal by the date of the interview. The template is available at: www.australiaawards.gov.au/nepal. Experience shows that it takes time for supervisors to complete referee reports. Approach supervisors as soon as possible to obtain up-to-date referee reports. If a referee report is not in English, a translation is required. References should come from employers, senior colleagues or academics familiar with the applicants academic, professional skills and achievements. Referee reports from family members or spouses are not acceptable.

The selection process Following eligibility checking against the published eligibility criteria, applications will be shortlisted. The selection process will also include an interview and a written exercise.
