LGBT vote could prove key factor in next weeks Democratic primary

Two polls released on Tuesday and a separate poll released one week earlier each show Gray and Bowser in a statistical tie and far ahead of the other six mayoral candidates.

Bowsers dramatic rise in the polls over the past month has prompted her campaign to step up its effort to urge supporters of the other candidates especially Council members Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) and Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) to switch their backing to Bowser. Although most observers believe the LGBT vote will be divided among several candidates, some activists say LGBT voters could be a deciding factor in the race if they coalesce behind either Gray or Bowser. Today and every day for the next 16 years 10,000 baby boomers, members of the generation born between 1946 and 1964, will turn 65, according to the Pew Research Center. About 1.5 million gay, lesbian and bisexual elders in the United States are gay.
By 2030, that number is expected to increase to nearly 3 million, according to a report by Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), the Movement Advancement Project and Center for American Progress. One in six Americans over 65 lives in poverty, according to the Congressional Research Service. For LGBT older adults, a lifetime of employment discrimination, among other factors, contribute to disproportionately high poverty rates, the SAGE website states. LGBT elders living in or near poverty arent just statistics. The Blade interviewed several LGBT elders, aged 50 and older, from St. Louis to Chicago to New York City to Washington, D.C. Here are their stories:

Graham res back at opponent, les ethics complaint

Most candidates boast pro-LGBT records in six D.C. Council races
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com Gay D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) added fuel to the re in the hotly contested Ward 1 D.C. Council race this week when he revealed he led a complaint last Friday with the citys Inspector General against his Democratic opponent Brianne Nadeau. The complaint, which Graham released to the Washington Post, accuses Nadeau of underreporting her income in 2009 to enable her to be eligible for an interestfree city loan to purchase a condominium under a city program for low- to moderateincome residents. Nadeau released a statement saying she did everything 100 percent by the book to obtain her loan and accused Graham of abusing his ofce and spending taxpayer dollars to attack a political opponent. The Ward 1 Council seat for which Graham and Nadeau are competing is one of six Council seats up for grabs in the citys April 1 Democratic primary. The other seats in contention are the Council Chair position, one of two at-large seats, and the seats representing Wards 3, 5 and 6. Also on the primary ballot is D.C. congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), whos running unopposed; and candidates running for the shadow U.S. Senate and House seats. Graham, who has held the Ward 1 Council seat for 16 years, is running for a fth term in ofce in what observers say is his toughest re-election bid to date. In his complaint, Graham charges that he observed what he believes to be serious irregularities and perhaps fraud in a loan application led by Nadeau in which she allegedly failed to report that her income had increased from the time she initially applied for the loan two years earlier. Under rules for the Home Purchase Assistance Program, known as HPAP , Nadeau would have been eligible for a loan of $33,050 to cover her down payment and closing costs if her income was below $50,000, which Graham says it was when she rst applied for the loan in 2007. But according to Graham, Nadeaus income rose to over $50,000 by 2009, when she received the loan while employed by the ofce of U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes (DMd.). Under the HPAP program, Nadeaus higher income meant she was only eligible for a loan of $14,450. The fact that she received the higher amount, according to Graham, raises serious questions about her ethical conduct as well as to whether she committed fraud. rights, is being challenged in the primary by former federal government auditor and civic activist Calvin Gurley. Most political observers consider Mendelson the strong favorite to win re-election. Mendelson received a +10 rating from GLAA and received the Stein Club endorsement. Gurley received a +1 GLAA rating. GLAA said Gurley expressed support for the citys same-sex marriage law when it came up for a vote in 2009, but said he expressed disagreement with a number of LGBT-related proposals in his responses on the GLAA candidate questionnaire. Mendelson has been credited with acting as the lead advocate for the same-sex marriage law during his tenure in 2009 as chair of the Councils Judiciary Committee, which had jurisdiction over the measure. The challengers are attorney and adjunct law professor Nate Bennett-Fleming, who currently serves as one of two shadow U.S. Representatives; businessman and civic activist John Settles; and federal government contract specialist and Latino community activist Pedro Rubio. Bennett-Fleming, who won the Stein Club endorsement in the past when running for his shadow House seat, received the highest vote count in the clubs Council endorsement meeting last month but fell short of obtaining the 60 percent threshold needed for the endorsement. He received a +7 GLAA rating compared to a +6 rating GLAA gave to Bonds. Rubio received a +3 GLAA rating and Settles received a +2.5. Each of the candidates, including Rubio and Settles, has expressed strong support for LGBT-related issues. Gay civic activist and Ward 1 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Marc Morgan is running unopposed for the atlarge seat in the Republican primary also scheduled for April 1.

Tom Fazzini, Nadeaus campaign manager, told the Blade on Wednesday that Nadeau fully reported all of her income, including the income above $50,000, to the Greater Washington Urban League, which the city had retained to administer the HPAP program. He said Graham took out of context an email Nadeau sent to the Urban League saying her income had not changed since 2007. When asked by the Post to explain a possible discrepancy in her reported income in the email in support of her loan application, Nadeau said that her base salary had not changed but that she had received bonuses that increased her pay, the Post reported. I have made all the documentation publicly available, which clearly shows that Jim Graham is distorting communications I had with him when I sought his help as a constituent ve year ago, Nadeau said in her statement. This is the same corrupt behavior that caused the D.C. Council to reprimand him and strip him of responsibility, she said. Fazzini couldnt immediately explain why the HPAP ofcials ultimately approved the higher loan amount when her income was above the $50,000 threshold. Grahams allegation against Nadeau follows a barrage of attacks against him by Nadeau during the past two months over a vote last year by the City Council to reprimand Graham on an ethics violation. The Councils action, in the form of an 11 to 2 vote, stemmed from allegations that he improperly intervened in the approval process for a Metro development project. Graham has said he acted in what he believed to be in the best interests of his constituents by arguing against one of two developers seeking the Metro contract on grounds that the developer was unqualied to do the work. Catania trails Bowser by wide margin in new poll

Post survey shows Gray and Bowser in dead heat, far ahead of others
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com A poll released by the Washington Post on Tuesday shows D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) ahead of gay Council member David Catania (I-At-Large) by a margin of 56 percent to 23 percent if the two run against each other for mayor in the November general election. Catania, a 16-year veteran of the Council, entered the race for mayor earlier this month as an independent, becoming the rst serious openly gay contender for D.C. mayor. A poll conducted by the Post in January showed Catania and Mayor Vincent Gray (D) in a statistical tie if the two were to run against each other in the general election. But Bowsers lead of more than 30 points over Catania in the latest poll suggests that large numbers of Democratic voters, who might have voted for Catania over Gray, are inclined to line up behind Bowser if she wins the Democratic primary on April 1. The same poll shows Bowser in a statistical tie with Gray in the primary. Bowser had 30 percent support compared to 27 percent support for Gray, with a margin of error of either Bowser or Gray. It shows he didnt gain any ground against the mayor since the rst poll in January despite all the negative publicity against Gray, he said. Rosenstein was referring to the barrage of news media reports about federal prosecutors linking Gray to an illegal hidden campaign conducted on Grays behalf by businessman Jeffrey Thompson and others who have pleaded guilty to criminal charges. Gray, who has denied any knowledge of the illegal campaign activities, has not been charged in what prosecutors say is an ongoing investigation into the matter. It will be very hard for Catania to beat Bowser if she wins the primary, Rosenstein said. If Gray wins the primary, he will get support from Democrats who backed the other candidates running in the primary. Catania supporters, many of whom are Democrats, have said Catania is perceived by many as a reform candidate with a reputation of shaking up city government agencies to x longstanding problems. They say his chances of winning against the Democratic nominee are good. Although he led papers to run for mayor, Catania would have the option of dropping out of the mayors race to run for re-election to his Council seat up until the ling deadline in June for independent candidates.

Our campaign is two weeks old and were just getting started, he said. Young noted that it remains unclear who will win the Democratic primary, adding, We are prepared to run against whomever comes out of the primary. According to the poll, conducted March
20-23 through both landline and cell phone calls, Council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) was in third place with 14 percent; Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) and Busboy and Poets restaurant owner and progressive activist Andy Shallal were tied for fourth place with 6 percent; and former State Department ofcial Reta Lewis and Council member Vincent Orange (D-AtLarge), each had 3 percent. Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria) on Saturday formally launched his campaign for the U.S. House seat in Northern Virginia being vacated by retiring Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), telling about 125 supporters he will be a champion for the underserved. Among those attending Ebbins campaign kick-off rally at Los Tios Restaurant in the Del Ray section of Alexandria were Alexandrias popular former mayor and former State Sen. Patsy Ticer (D) and State Sen. Mark Sickles (D-Fairfax). Both have endorsed Ebbin. Sickles, who came out as gay in a Washington Post column in January, was among at least 11 candidates running for Morans congressional seat before dropping out of the race two weeks ago. In Congress, Im going to be a champion for the underserved, Ebbin U.S. Supreme Court. Among the other issues he will push in Congress, Ebbin said, are comprehensive immigration reform, environmental protection, protecting Social Security and Medicare, raising the federal minimum wage and a real raise for federal workers. Mark Levine, a gay rights attorney, radio talk show host and legal counsel to gay former U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is among what had been 11 Democrats competing for Morans congressional seat in the solidly Democratic 8th District. Another two candidates reportedly have entered the race in the June 10 Democratic primary. The winner of the primary is expected to be the strong favorite to win the general election in November. In this race theres a lot of candidates, and youre hearing a lot of progressive slogans, Ebbin said at his rally on March 22. Weve got someone who is a proven principled progressive. Weve got someone who is the aggressive progressive and someone who is even a progressive warrior, he said. And if its easier, just call me a liberal, said Ebbin.

Ebbin noted that he spent nine of his 11 years in the Virginia General Assembly as a member of the Republican-controlled House of Delegates before being elected in 2011 to the State Senate. Ive spent more than a decade passing progressive legislation through the General Assembly, including a hostile House of Delegates, he said. With me and
supporters of principled legislation like Sen. Ticer I led the opposition to the antimarriage equality amendment in 2006 that was recently overturned, he said. We have turned the corner and there is no going back. Ebbin was referring to a federal district court in Virginia that earlier this year declared the 2006 ballot measure banning same-sex marriage in the state constitution a violation of the U.S. Constitution. Supporters of the marriage ban are seeking to appeal the court ruling, and the case could go to the

Gray, Bowser battle over wavering LGBT voters

The poll released one week earlier and commissioned by WAMU Radio and the Washington City Paper showed Gray and Bowser each receiving 27 percent. All three polls show that Grays support has largely remained at the same level it was more than two months ago while Bowsers support has risen by more than 10 points. According to the NBC4/Marist poll released on Tuesday, among likely Democratic voters, Council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) was in third place with 11 percent; Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) was in fourth place with 9 percent; and Busboys and Poets Restaurant owner and progressive activist Andy Shallal and Council member Vincent Orange (D-At-Large) each had 4 percent. Attorney and former State Department ofcial Reta Jo Lewis had 2 percent and businessman Carlos Allen had less than 1 percent. Fifteen percent of the respondents were undecided. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.7 percent. The latest polls are showing what we knew all along that this is a two-candidate race, said gay activist and businessman Everett Hamilton, whos supporting Bowser. All the candidates are great on our issues and we are really fortunate to have an embarrassment of riches among the candidates, he said. So this election is really not about whether someone will be good on LGBT issues, Hamilton said. Its about things that need to be better in this city. Transgender activist Jeri Hughes, who supports Gray, said she was troubled that some opponents of Gray are arguing that people shouldnt vote for him because of the pending criminal investigation into an illegal shadow campaign on the mayors behalf in 2010. At least four people associated with Grays 2010 election campaign, including businessman Jeffrey Thompson, have pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to the raising of more than $660,000 in illegal campaign funds. But despite statements by U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen that more is to come in his ongoing investigation, which began four years ago, no charges have been led against Gray, who strongly denies any involvement in illegal campaign activities. I dont think the people moving toward Bowser are LGBT people for the most part, Hughes said. This is due to allegations against the mayor. Nothing has been proven. Im very disappointed that so many people are buying into innuendo, she said. I cant turn away my support because of innuendo, said Hughes. I believe the mayor is of the utmost integrity and most

people I know in the LGBT community share this view. Hughes and Lane Hudson, a local gay Democratic activist who founded an independent LGBT group supporting Gray called Gray Pride, are among a number of activists who consider Grays record on LGBT issues to be the strongest in the nation for a big city mayor. Transgender activists have described as groundbreaking a rst-of-its-kind city job training program initiated by Gray aimed at low-income transgender residents, who often face prejudice and discrimination when seeking employment. Also considered groundbreaking by activists was the mayors recent directive requiring health insurance companies doing business in the city to cover gender reassignment surgery and other procedures deemed medically necessary for transgender people in the process of transitioning. It will be a close race, Hudson said. The turnout will be crucial. The more activist types are favoring Gray, he said. I feel he is getting around half to a majority of LGBT votes. Hudson said he doesnt think a signicant number of LGBT voters have dropped their support for Gray over the 2010 campaign nance allegations. He said that since the start of the campaign late last year he expected the LGBT vote to split along the lines it did in 2010 when LGBT people divided their vote between Gray and then Mayor Adrian Fenty. Evans and Wells supporters, meanwhile, questioned whether the latest polls accurately reect the view of the people who will actually turn out to vote. They urged supporters to remain loyal to their respective candidate in a hotly contested election with an outcome that seasoned political observers, including LGBT advocates, said was unpredictable, in part,
because the voter turnout is expected to be at an all-time low. A low turnout is expected, according to political observers, because voters are unaccustomed to having a primary or any city election in April. In a controversial action, the D.C. Council voted last year to move the primary from September to April 1. In addition to Democratic candidates, gay Libertarian Party candidate Bruce Majors is running unopposed in his partys mayoral primary on April 1, ensuring that he will be on the ballot in the November general election. Also running unopposed in the April 1 primary is Statehood-Green Party candidate Faith, a former Broadway musician who has run for public ofce several times in the past. At a campaign rally Monday night at the D.C. gay bar Number 9, Evans reminded the mostly gay crowd that he has been on the front lines in support of LGBT rights since he began his tenure on the Council in 1991 when he led the effort to repeal the citys sodomy law. In his GLAA questionnaire response, Evans lists nearly two-dozen LGBT-related bills he has introduced, cosponsored or supported that have passed since he became a Council member. Evans said hes telling anyone who will listen including LGBT voters that he has a shot at winning if everyone familiar with his long record of accomplishment on a wide range of issues votes for him. What Im saying to people is Im the alternative that you need, Evans said. And I can win if you vote for me. All of the candidates except Allen have expressed strong support for LGBT rights, including marriage equality. Although Allen has expressed general support on LGBT issues during candidate forums, he received a 0 rating from the Gay & Lesbian Activists
Alliance for failing to return a questionnaire asking about specic issues. The nonpartisan GLAA rates on a scale of -10 to +10. Gray received a +10, the highest possible rating from GLAA. He received 58 percent of the vote in the Gertrude Stein Democratic Clubs mayoral endorsement forum, falling four votes short of the 60 percent threshold needed for an endorsement under the clubs rules. With support from Stein Club members divided among the candidates, the club did not endorse anyone for mayor. Wells received a +9.5 GLAA rating; Evans received a +9, Shallal received a +6, Bowser received a +5.5, Lewis received a +4.5, and Orange received a +3. The mayoral candidates responding to the GLAA questionnaire each expressed support for a wide range of LGBT issues and initiatives proposed by the non-partisan GLAA. GLAA President Rick Rosendall noted that none of the mayoral candidates were designated as hostile or in opposition to a signicant LGBT issue. Wells supporters point to his role as chair of the Councils Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, where he has pushed through a number of important LGBT-related bills, including a measure easing the ability of transgender people to obtain a new birth certicate to reect their new gender. Wells has also monitored police handing of antiLGBT hate crimes in a series of oversight hearings on the subject. Orange supporters, including LGBT backers from his home base in Ward 5, note that, among other things, he helped push through legislation to create the citys Ofce of GLBT Affairs and worked with gay Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) in securing Council passage of an amendment that added transgender people to the D.C. Human Rights Acts prohibitions against discrimination. In addition to being a longtime supporter of LGBT rights, Shallal said he regularly arranges for his Busboys and Poets restaurants to host and sponsor LGBTrelated events, including a monthly queer open series that encourages self-expression for the LGBT community. Lewis said that as a senior State Department ofcial in the Obama administration, she backed then Secretary of State Hillary Clintons implementation of domestic partnership benets and spousal privileges to same-sex partners of U.S. Foreign Service employees. I was proud to have been a part of the administration that made it possible for landmark legislation like the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act to become law, she said on her GLAA questionnaire response. Mayor honors Sheroes of LGBT movement

Among other things, Nelson has served on the board of Miriams House, a residence for HIV-positive, homeless women. Robinson operates Planned Parenthoods national youth and campus engagement programs known as the Planned Parenthood Generation, which is a project of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, information released by the mayors ofce says. She is dedicated to cultivating, engaging, and supporting a broad, diverse network of young leaders, especially young people of color and LGBTQ youth, a statement in the program book says. Kelley has doubled Planned Parenthoods campus presence over the last two years, for a total of 250 campus groups nationwide, nearly 100 teen advocacy programs and thousands of individual activists, it says. Its a real honor to be here, Gray told the awards gathering. Ive said theres a lot of people who have done a lot for the residents of the District of Columbia to bring about a level of understanding and acceptance that otherwise might not exist in the District of Columbia maybe more so than any other city or state. Mayor Vincent Gray on March 21 presented the citys 2014 Sheroes of the Movement Award to three women chosen for outstanding contributions to the LGBT movement and community of the District of Columbia. In a ceremony at the federal Fannie Mae Conference Center on Wisconsin Avenue, N.W., Gray handed the awards to Cathy Chu, Youth Leadership Manager for the local LGBT youth advocacy and services group SMYAL; Amy Nelson, Supervising Attorney at Whitman-Walker Healths Legal Services Program; and Kelley Robinson, Assistant Director for Youth Engagement at Planned Parenthood. The purpose of these awards is to honor Sheroes of the District of Columbia GLBT community for their achievement and community service during Womens History Month, said Earl Fowlkes, chair of the Mayors GLBT Advisory Committee, which selected this years honorees. These unsung Sheroes have contributed so much to our community and are often not recognized for their work in helping to make the District one of the most vibrant GLBT communities to live and work in the United States, Fowlkes in a statement in the ceremonys program book. A statement released by the mayors ofce says the Ofce of GLBT Affairs organized this years 3rd annual Sheroes of the Movement Award program with
the Mayors Ofce on Womens Policy and Initiatives and the Mayors Ofce of Community Affairs. The statement describes the 2014 awardees as three lesbian, bisexual or queer women who have made signicant contributions to the LGBT movement and community in the District. Chu, among other things, develops programs and training initiatives designed to empower young LGBTQ-identied individuals in the District, Maryland and Virginia, according to biographical information released by the mayors ofce. She also serves on the Steering Committees for the National Association of Gay-Straight Alliance Networks and Asian Pacic Islander Queer Sisters. As part of her work at SMYAL, she facilitates the Womens Leadership Institute, which provides a weekly discussion group and overnight retreats for more than 100 young LGB women and gender non-conforming youth in the D.C. area, information released by the mayors ofce says. Nelson, an attorney, among other things, oversees Whitman-Walker Healths client intake, supervises staff attorneys and represents clients about half of whom are LGBT in the areas of health care access, public benets, consumer rights and workplace rights cases. She is credited with playing the lead role in launching the citys rst Name and Gender Change Clinic to assist transgender people in updating their legal identity documents and personal records. In partnership with the local group TransLAW, the Name and Gender Change Clinic has served more than 270 clients and has trained more than 150 volunteers to carry out its services.
Md. House committee approves trans bill

The Maryland House of Delegates Health and Government Operations Committee on Tuesday approved a bill that would ban discrimination against transgender Marylanders. House Bill 1265 the Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2014 passed by a 13-9 vote margin. State Dels. Peter Hammen (D-Baltimore City), Shane Pendergrass (D-Howard County), Eric Bromwell (D-Baltimore County), Bonnie Cullison (D-Montgomery County), James Hubbard (D-Prince Georges County), Ariana Kelly (D-Montgomery County), Dan Morhaim (D-Baltimore County), Shirley Nathan-Pulliam (D-Baltimore County), Nathaniel Oaks (D-Baltimore City), Joseline Pena-Melnyk (D-Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties), Kirill Reznik (D-Montgomery County), Shawn Tarrant (D-Baltimore City) and Veronica Turner (D-Prince Georges County) voted for the measure. Gay R.I. House speaker steps down

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox (D-Providence) on March 22 resigned his post a day after federal and state authorities raided his ofce and home as part of an undisclosed criminal investigation. Because of the respect I have for all members of the House of Representatives, I am resigning as speaker, said the Providence Democrat in a statement that also announced he would not seek re-election as the Associated Press reported. The process of governing must continue and the transition of leadership must be conducted in an orderly manner. Fox, 52, in 2010 became the countrys rst openly gay House speaker. He sparked controversy among some LGBT rights advocates in 2011 when he sponsored a civil unions bill after it became clear a measure that would have allowed gays and lesbians to marry did not have enough votes in the Rhode Island Senate. Gov. Lincoln Chafee last May signed a same-sex marriage bill into law that Fox spearheaded. Fox and his partner, Marcus LaFond, wed after the law took effect last August. Lawmakers on Tuesday elected House Majority Leader Nick Mattielo (D-Cranston) to succeed Fox.

By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com Vice President Joseph Biden made an extensive case last Saturday night for international LGBT rights, saying other nations are looking to the United States to lead the way as a champion on the issue. Before an estimated 1,000 attendees at the Human Rights Campaign annual dinner in Los Angeles, Biden said the rights of LGBT people are an inseparable part of the Obama administrations foreign policy agenda and dignity and respect has to remain our North Star. I travelled to most countries in the world, and I can tell you, theyre looking to us as an example, as a champion of LGBT rights everywhere, Biden said during his 30-minute speech Noting that being gay is illegal in 80 countries, Biden laid out the challenges faced by LGBT people overseas. In places like in Jamaica, he decried the practice of corrective rape for lesbians, and was critical of the anti-gay law in Nigeria that makes entering into same-sex marriage or supporting LGBT rights punishable by time in prison. The vice president also criticized Russia, which has recently been condemned by the United States over its military incursion into Ukraine, for its law banning pro-gay propaganda to minors. By the way, as the great Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov said, A country that does not respect the rights of its citizens will not respect the rights of its neighbors, and were seeing that today in Ukraine, Biden said. Earlier in the week, Biden met with global LGBT activists in the West Wing of the White House. During the speech, Biden said they had one thing in common: taking incredible personal risks to ght for the rights of others. The single most basic of all human rights is the right to decide who you love, Biden said. Its the single basic building block; its the single most important human right. And hate can never, never be defended because its a so-called cultural norm. Ive had it up to here with cultural norms. Biden also commended other countries for enacting pro-gay policies, saying Albania recently enacted into law hate crimes protections based on sexual orientation and Mongolia recently hosted its rst-ever Pride celebration. In addition to emphasizing the importance of LGBT rights overseas, Biden also maintained that work remains incomplete within the United States and called on Congress immediately to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, saying the lack of prohibition on anti-LGBT workplace discrimination is close to barbaric. Its almost beyond belief that today, in 2014, I can say to you as your employee in so many states, Youre red because of who you love, Biden said. Think about that. It is bizarre. No, no, no. It really is. I dont think most Americans even know that employers can do that. At no time in Bidens speech did he mention a much-sought executive order that would bar federal contractors from engaging in discrimination against LGBT workers. The vice president alluded to his endorsement of same-sex marriage in 2012, which came days before President Obamas announcement, and expressed satisfaction that recent polls have found a majority of Americans agree with him. Biden was preceded in his remarks on stage by HRC President Chad Grifn and second lady Jill Biden.
Volleyball player murdered in Puerto Rico

FAJARDO, Puerto Rico A Puerto Rican man faces murder and other charges for allegedly stabbing a gay volleyball player to death last week. Primera Hora reported Jess David Hernndez Oteros family reported him missing on March 18 after he told his sister that he would return home shortly. Surfers at a nearby beach the following day found Hernndezs body with multiple stab wounds. Authorities on March 19 arrested Neftal Castillo Cabrera in connection with Hernndezs death. Police ofcials told Primera Hora that Castillo attacked Hernndez who had been friends with his alleged killer since childhood and played on the same volleyball team with him because he was gay. Pedro Julio Serrano of Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, a local LGBT advocacy group, has urged authorities to investigate Hernndezs murder as a hate crime. They should not be afraid to bring an aggravating hate crime charge, Serrano told el Nuevo Da on March 24. Puerto Ricos hate crimes law includes sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. Gov. Alejandro Garca Padilla last May signed into law a bill that bans anti-LGBT discrimination in the U.S. commonwealth.
Jerry Springer to stop using tranny

STAMFORD, Conn. Talk show host Jerry Springer on March 24 said he will no longer use a term on his program that many transgender advocates nd offensive. Springer told TMZ Live that LGBT advocacy groups criticized him over a recent show that was titled Trannies Twerk It Out. The talk show host told the website he did not know tranny is considered offensive. Ive just been educated, said Springer. I wont use that term. I honestly had no idea that youre not supposed to use that term, so now well nd another term to use. RuPaul is among the other celebrities and personalities who have come under re in recent weeks for using words that LGBT rights advocates consider transphobic.

Appeals court halts marriages in Michigan

Judges rule state must follow guidance on Utah gay nuptials
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com The U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals announced late Tuesday it has placed a hold on same-sex marriages in Michigan pending appeal dashing the hopes of those who wanted the weddings to continue as litigation moved forward. In a 2-1 decision, the majority ruled it must place a stay on a ruling from U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman striking down Michigans ban on same-sex marriage in the case of DeBoer v. Snyder to conform to an earlier stay decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. There is no apparent basis to distinguish this case or to balance the equities any differently than the Supreme Court did in Kitchen, the majority writes. Furthermore, several district courts that have struck down laws prohibiting same-sex marriage similar to the Michigan amendment at issue here have also granted requests for stays made by state defendants. The U.S. Supreme Court had issued a stay on same-sex marriages in Utah pending the outcome of litigation, Kitchen v. Herbert, after a district judge struck down the states marriage ban and Utah Gov. Gary Herbert sought to halt the weddings by ling a stay request. The two judges in the majority for the stay decision were U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell, sitting by designation on the appeals court, and U.S. Circuit Judge John Rogers. U.S. Circuit Judge Helene White was the sole dissent in the stay decision. Each of the judges was appointed and conrmed by former President George W. Bush. In her dissent, White writes the stay in the Utah case isnt controlling for the Michigan marriages and says the state didnt make a sufcient argument that it would succeed in the case on appeal. Michigan has not made the requisite showing, White writes. Although the Supreme Court stayed the permanent injunction issued by the Utah District Court in Kitchen v. Herbert pending nal disposition by the Tenth Circuit, it did so without a statement of reasons, and therefore the order provides little guidance. I would therefore apply the traditional fourfactor test, which leads me to conclude that a stay is not warranted. Although Friedman didnt include a stay as part of his ruling, the Sixth Circuit instituted a temporary stay on the weddings after an estimated 315 marriage licenses were distributed to same-sex couples in Ingham, Washtenaw, Muskegon and Oakland counties. Legal experts who spoke with the Washington Blade over the weekend say they didnt think the Sixth Circuit needed to place a stay on Michigan same-sex marriages because the Supreme Courts stay on same-sex marriages in Utah wasnt controlling and numerous courts have ruled in favor of marriage equality since the stay decision in that case. In a ling before the Sixth Circuit on Tuesday, attorneys for the plaintiff samesex couples in the case, April DeBoer and Jane Rowse, made similar arguments that the court should allow the samesex weddings to continue pending the outcome of the litigation. Attorneys for Oakland County Clerk Lisa Brown, who assisted as a defendant in litigation against Michigans same-sex marriage ban, argued in a separate ling the court should reject a stay because it would harm same-sex couples living in the state. But Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, whos been defending Michigans ban on same-sex marriage, argued before the Sixth Circuit that the court must follow precedent by the Supreme Court, noting other federal judges instituted stays when striking down bans on same-sex marriage. As to the merits of the stay itself, none of the plaintiffs arguments overcome a simple fact: the Supreme Court has already addressed precisely this situation a federal district court striking down a state marriage amendment and concluded that a stay pending appeal was necessary, Schuette writes.

A Gawker reporter with whom the Blade spoke outside the venue said Smith took a picture of him with his cell phone as he walked to his car. The Fox News anchor rushed past the reporter as he tried to ask him questions. Blade Editor Kevin Naff outed Smith in 2005 after Smith hit on him in a Manhattan bar. Innis seeks N.H. House seat in historic year for GOP
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com Dan Innis is part of a new phenomenon for 2014 the openly gay Republican candidate for Congress. The New Hampshire Republican is one of three openly gay Republicans running in the congressional mid-terms along with Richard Tisei in Massachusetts and Carl DeMaio in San Diego. The signicance of the triumvirate of gay GOPers running for Congress at the same time isnt lost on Innis, who spoke with the Washington Blade during a trip to D.C. last week between meetings on K Street. I think its an indicator of how far we have moved as a nation because 10 years ago, this wouldnt be happening, Innis said. And we have really come a long way, and I think we will continue to move along this path. To me, its a real statement about our continued push for full equality. But its the Republican aspect of Innis candidacy thats at the forefront of his mind as he seeks to oust incumbent Democrat Rep. Carol Shea-Porter from her seat representing New Hampshires 1st congressional district. During his tenure since 2007 as dean of the College of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire, Innis said the young people with whom he works dont see the world in the same way as he did when he was younger. Ive been working with young people for 23 years in higher education, Innis said. I have three kids of my own, 13, 20 and 22. And the way that they see the world today is different from the way that I saw it. They dont feel the same level of freedom, they dont feel the same opportunities, they dont feel that their future is as bright as I felt mine was. For Innis, the downward shift has its roots in Washington, and its time for New Hampshire to send representatives to Congress who are not career politicians, who can help to turn things back around, and bring back that sense of optimism about the future. Innis earlier this month won an endorsement from the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which has also endorsed Tisei in his bid for Congress. Dan Innis is a sensible and visionary leader, two qualities New Hampshire constituents deserve in a representative, said Torey Carter, chief operating ofcer at the Victory Fund. His unique combination of corporate and academic backgrounds has allowed him to address issues that affect others with careful consideration. Innis said he hasnt sought an Boehner or somebody else, Im there, and that bill affects me, and that affects how they perceive that bill, and I think it will really change the way the Republican Party will move forward. Innis isnt alone in his bid for the Republican nomination. Also running is Frank Guinta, a former member of the U.S. House who defeated Shea-Porter in 2010, but lost to her in the 2012 election. The primary is Sept. 9. A recent WMUR Granite State Poll showed Guinta ahead of Shea-Porter, but Innis behind her. He attributed that discrepancy to name recognition, saying that would change as the campaign gets underway and Super PACs come to his aid. Although signicant gains for LGBT equality have been made under the Obama administration, Innis insisted credit for progress should be given to all who contributed. You know, weve seen previous presidents, the one before Obama, put an awful lot of money into AIDS research, Innis said, And I think that deserves credit. George W. Bush was phenomenal on that. He deserves credit. Any leader whos taken a stand on these issues deserves credit regardless of party. To me, this is not a partisan issue; this is a human issue. Despite his support for LGBT rights, Innis stopped short of endorsing the idea of an executive order barring LGBT workplace bias against federal contractors. No Republican lawmaker or candidate has yet to endorse the order. I have some issues with executive orders, Innis said. Im not a big fan of executive orders generally speaking, and I will say I havent given this one an awful lot of thought, but I think equality is always a good thing. Asked whether he was leaning in favor of supporting the executive order, Innis said hed like to see an end to LGBT discrimination done in a more open and participative way. Coming from a state where samesex marriage was made legal in 2009 through the legislative process, Innis had a role in helping resist an effort from a Republican supermajority in the legislature to repeal the statute. Innis acknowledged he didnt have an active role in the legalization of same-sex marriage at that time because he had recently come out as gay and was still in his position at the university, but said he lent his voice as a Republican when the law was under threat. I guess I was on a brochure that went to all the legislators with my story, Innis said. I gave a couple of talks, some things in newspapers, and really I think represented equality in the state in that battle. It became very visible for me. I was featured in the Portsmith Herald on the front page the day after. It was a little more public than I wanted to be, but so be it. Innis said he faced criticism for his role in convincing the Republicans to drop efforts to repeal the law, but wouldnt identify who was unhappy with him. I think its important to note that that was a Republican legislature that had a vetoproof majority in both houses. Think about that and equality was supported, Innis said. Thats New Hampshire. And we believe in equality and freedom for all. Innis said he hasnt yet spoken to the other two gay Republican candidates running for Congress, but said he expects to talk to them soon. Hes also not a member of the joint fundraising committee formed by Tisei and DeMaio called the Equality Leadership Fund. Innis said hes aware of the fund but remains focused on his campaign. It should be noted all three openly gay Republicans seeking seats in the U.S. House are trying to oust incumbent Democrats. Ray Buckley, whos gay and chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, said Shea-Porter is the best candidate because New Hampshire voters expect elected ofcials to stand up against injustice and support families of all varieties. Instead, Dan Innis failed to ght for LGBT rights in New Hampshire as the legislature debated marriage equality, Buckley said. He failed them again during the ght for the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, in which strong Republican voices could have helped turn the tide, ending the ability to discriminate against someone in the workplace for simply being who they are. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Shea-Porter has consistently been on the right side of history, defending LGBT families and advancing civil rights. Dan Innis is the wrong candidate for families of all kinds in the state of New Hampshire. But Innis insisted that hes the right candidate for the LGBT community because, unlike Shea-Porter, hes lived the experience of being openly gay. I live it and understand it more thoroughly than she ever will. Im LGBT; Carol Shea-Porter is not, Innis said. And though I appreciate her support of the community, I think the support coming from me is genuine and its part of me. Its the new voices the gay Republican candidates are bringing to the fore that Innis said are making the campaigns valuable in and of themselves. I think we have three historic races, Innis said. Races that wouldnt have taken place not that many years ago. And I think that in and of itself adds value for our community, and if were going to move equality forward, weve got to do it in every way possible - Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, independent, doesnt matter I think that if one or all of us wins, were that much closer to equality.

Even with the Victory Fund endorsement, the New Hampshire Republican said he doesnt see LGBT issues as a priority for him if elected as much as the advancement of equality in general. I think, for me, its about equality for all, and those are the issues that Ill always champion, so any issue that relates to equality whether its related to gender, race, sexual orientation those are values that I think all Americans hold, and those are things that I would always ght for, Innis said. Its a broad-based equality mission for me. But among the pieces of legislation at the top of his list is the Employment NonDiscrimination Act, a bill that has languished in Congress for years that would prohibit bias against LGBT people in the workforce. Its time that that come up for a vote, and theres no reason it shouldnt, Innis said. Weve seen support for that on the Senate side, New Hampshire senators both supported it, Republican and Democrat, and Im proud of that. And I believe the House will do the right thing. The legislation passed in the Senate late last year on a bipartisan vote of 6432, but House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said he opposes it and it hasnt yet come up for a vote in the Republican-controlled chamber. Even though his vote rst in Congress would be for Republican leadership, Innis said he sees the ability for LGBT legislation to advance under a GOPcontrolled House because hed bring a different voice to the caucus. LGBT elders confront economic insecurity, ageism

A little peanut butter, maybe some pizza or Ramen noodles is a typical meal for Robyn Sullivan, a 57-year-old transgender woman living in New York City, who struggles to pull together $25 a week for food. In the past, shes lived in homeless shelters. Now, she lives in a cockroach infested third oor walk-up with four gender non-conforming struggling artists. This is the hardest place in the country to live if you dont make tons of money, said Sullivan, who suffers from clinical depression and arthritis. They wanted me to work one day a week for eight hours at a construction site with my limitations to qualify for $190 of food stamps. Working there would be too dangerous. Her plight is common among transgender people, Sullivan said. Dealing with transphobia is nothing I can win at. In the 1990s, Sullivan was a skilled software project manager. I used to make six gures, she said. When I was living as a white male professional, I was getting privilege far beyond what any human being deserves. Then I needed to transition and there was the downturn in Silicon Valley. After a couple of years, her savings were gone. As you go along into poverty, there are things that make people avoid you, said Sullivan, who now works part-time as a receptionist for SAGE. I wasnt hired for a job around the corner from here. They said I wasnt trustworthy because I lived in a homeless shelter, she said. Sullivan encounters not only transphobia but ageism. When youre past 50, no company with a retirement plan will hire you, Sullivan said. Even with all that she endures, Sullivan says she doesnt harbor regrets. When I came out as a trans woman, I felt like I was the woman I was, she said. I chose to stop living a lie. Knowing what I know now, I doubt I would have done anything differently. Its not always been as good for him as it is now, 70-year-old Roger Beyers of Chicago told the Blade. But nobody ever said, lifes going to be a bed of roses, he said. Beyers, who retired at 66 after working for 40 years for Jewel, a Chicago area grocer, is HIV positive. My income is less than $12,000 per year, he said. My housing is subsidized by Chicago House. Before I was admitted to Chicago House, I was on the verge of homelessness. Im on Medicare and Medicaid. Medicaid pays for his HIV medication, Beyers said. If I had to pay for it, it would cost $18,000. I couldnt afford it, he said. If it were to collapse, Id be in a fragile position.

Though he struggles with issues of economic insecurity, he feels that hes overcoming some of them, Beyers said. He recently started a part-time internship with the Center on Halsted in Chicago. My nancial situation has dramatically changed, Beyers said. Theres a world of difference between living on Social Security and having money left over at the end of the month. For one day a week at the Center, he
Paradise said. They never say youre too old. They say, we want someone who graduated more recently or youre over qualied, she said. I say to them, you must want someone whos younger. It gets discouraging, Paradise said. Shes used up her savings and in three months her unemployment benets will run out, unless Congress extends the benets. It gets scary, Paradise said,
retirement age, Woodruff said. She gets by on her monthly $633 Social Security check. Fortunately, Woodruff says, she has Medicare and Medicaid. Thank God, that paid for my medication when my thyroid went haywire, she said. Im fortunate. I pay $202 in rent for a nice one-bedroom apartment. Its HUDsubsidized through the Cardinal Ritter Senior Services housing program. Woodruffs partner of 20 years died in a boating accident in 1988. When she passed, I lost the house. It was in her name. We didnt think about those things then, she said. Over the years, Woodruff has done everything from working in a nursing recruitment ofce to running, with a business partner, an event designing business to clerking at a convenience store. You do what you have to do to put food on the table, she said. For several years, Woodruff stopped working to take care of her now deceased mother. Her Social Security was very little. But Id do it again, she said.

A shout-out for my boyfriend! I may end up marrying this man, he said. Mary Paradise, 62, a Capital Pride board member and Washington, D.C. resident, has been looking for work for more than a year. She worked as a nurse for 42 years. Paradise, while working as a health marketing consultant, was laid off due to downsizing. Throughout her job search, shes often encountered ageism,
its a humbling experience. Ive worked all my life. For Congress to think Im lazy is insulting. But Paradise is optimistic. She volunteers at her church. My faith is such that I believe I will be taken care of if I just keep moving forward, she said. I have friends who are wonderfully supportive. I have some job leads. Something will come my way thats a perfect t. Like many baby boomers, Barbara Woodruff, 64, of St. Louis thought that she had plenty of money put away for retirement. But like far too many people, especially lesbians, she found herself with no savings when she reached

My friends would make sure Id have a place to live. Id be grateful to have a room in their house. But it wouldnt be my home.

Fake Grindr proles in Calif. run by health workers

SAN FRANCISCO Health workers in Californias San Mateo County have been creating fake proles on the online hookup application Grindr to encourage more men who have sex with men to get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, the Bay Area Reporter, a gay San Francisco paper, reports. Darryl Lampkin, prevention supervisor for the STD/HIV program at the countys health department, told the Reporter that the efforts have enabled staff to reach far more people than they had been able to in the county, which is just south of San Francisco but includes no physical venues such as gay bars or community centers where outreach can be focused. Lampkin, who spoke March 13 to members of San Franciscos HIV Prevention Planning Council, said staffers dont initiate contact with others on the site and the proles contain minimal information. Instead, they respond when someone expresses interest in the prole.

NEW YORK A newly published study found evidence that men having sex with men use the Internet to nd sexual partners who do not identify as gay, either to fulll a fantasy or because it allows anonymous sexual encounters without discovery. The ndings, conducted by Eric Schrimshaw, Ph.D. at Columbia Universitys Mailman School of Public Health and Martin Downing Jr., Ph. D. of the National Development and Research Institutes, were published in the online journal Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity published by the American Psychological Association. To examine the subgroup of men seeking non-gay-identied (NGI) men in the online sexual marketplace, the researchers reviewed 1,200 Internet personal ads posted on Craigslist and selected 282 for analysis. They performed comparisons of two categories of personal ads: those seeking encounters with NGI men, including straight, bisexual, married, curious and men on the down low; and a contrasting set of ads that did not specically seek NGI men. Among the ads studied, 11 percent were placed by men seeking NGI partners. Although men who posted NGI-seeking ads were more likely to self-identify as bisexual, married, and/or discreet and to seek out an anonymous encounter relative to the ads of comparison men, only 24 percent of online advertisements seeking NGI men were posted by men who were themselves non-gay-identied. This suggests that many of the posts are placed by gay men seeking NGI men, perceived by some gay men to be more masculine, dominant or straight-acting. Only a small number of ads by NGI-seeking men mentioned safe sex or condom use.
HIV prevention injection study expands in China

HONG KONG A top AIDS research team may try to recruit about 1,000 at-risk men from Hong Kong and the mainland for clinical trials of an injection to prevent HIV infection, the South China Morning Post reports. If it goes ahead as planned next year, the project by the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York will be the rst HIV-prevention clinical trial in China. The plan comes after the team, led by celebrated Taiwanese-American researcher Dr. David Ho, used an antiretroviral drug dubbed GSK744 to protect laboratory monkeys from HIV for weeks. Clinical trials on men and women were scheduled to start in the U.S. this week, the Post reports. For the mainland-Hong Kong trial, the team will seek men engaged in high-risk same-sex activity. But Professor Martin Markowitz, clinical director of the center, an afliate of Rockefeller University, said stigma surrounding gay men in China might pose a challenge, the South China Morning Post article said. Markowitz is cautiously optimistic the drug could be developed into an injection to protect humans from HIV for three months with one shot, the Post article said. The effectiveness of oral pills already available for HIV prevention varied in different studies, mainly because people did not always take the drug daily as required for protection, he said. They are aiming at the highest-risk group men engaging in unprotected receptive anal intercourse with an untreated HIV-positive partner. Chinas HIV infection rate was 0.058 per cent in 2011, but among men engaging in samesex behaviour it was 6.3 per cent, according to the Ministry of Health. In Hong Kong, 559 new cases of HIV infection were reported last year, the Post reports.

Women candidates have to overcome many barriers when seeking elected ofce. Sadly, this is also the case here in the District. In addition to the normal political nastiness that characterizes competitive D.C. races, women candidates also face sexism. The sexism includes double standards concerning appearance, sexist statements and passive-aggressive comments that are designed to question a candidates competence. Last week, I had the privilege to participate in the DC Federation of Democratic Womens (DCFDW) Lobby Day. We spent an entire day at the John A. Wilson Building, where we met with the mayor and the majority of D.C. Council members, including the top mayoral contenders. These legislators met with us in half hour intervals and answered our questions about issues that affect women in the District. I was there as a member of the DCFDW and not as a columnist, so Im not going to report on specics from the meetings. Events like this, however, tend to serve as a visual reminder of the lack of women on the Council. It makes you wonder why this is the case in a city
running for ofce. The maliciousness of local elections is probably a factor for many women, as it is for many men. As women (yes, Im generalizing), we tend to be concerned with the impact that our actions will have on those close to us. So, even when we make the determination that we can handle anything our opponent throws at us, we tend to consider the impact a vicious public campaign will have on our children or signicant others. Thus, the current political climate does not make women particularly eager to run for ofce. Campaigns should serve as a vehicle to vet candidates on key issues. Yet, all too often, they serve as a means to make personal attacks that have nothing to do with a candidates ability to legislate and serve the public. Women candidates tend to be targeted in a different way than male candidates. A common way to attack a woman candidate without appearing to be blatantly sexist is to refer to her as being too nice. It is one of those code phrases designed to let people know that shes just not ready for the big leagues, yet being too nice is never mentioned as a weakness for male candidates. Rather, it is perceived as a strength because it signies that the candidate is a consensus builder. But then, male candidates do not battle

woman who is reective and likes to build consensus is too nice and not assertive enough. A woman who is too aggressive is called a bitch. Women have to navigate the line just right to not be seen as either too weak or too assertive. During last years special election, Council member Anita Bonds was referred to as Chocolate City Mamma, in an anonymous op-ed that ran in the Hill Rag. The publishers saw nothing wrong with publishing this article and the article remains online to this day. During this election, Bonds is constantly the target of many sexist and ageist remarks on Twitter, such as Grandma Bonds, that are intended to demean her. This type of sexist and racist innuendo makes other women pause when contemplating running for ofce. (In full disclosure, I am working with the Bonds campaign on communications.) You also see sexist insinuations directed toward mayoral candidate Muriel Bowser. I have decided to remain neutral in the mayoral race, but it is difcult not to notice blatant sexism. There are people, both male and female, who reference Sharon Pratt Kelly when discussing their fear of a potential Bowser administration. While I can think of both pros and cons of supporting Bowser, just as I can for the other major mayoral candidates, the potential that she will suddenly morph into Sharon Pratt Kelly is not one of my concerns. Bowser and Kelly have nothing in common except their gender. People do not see the double standard of comparing a woman candidate to a woman that previously held the job, even if they have completely different experiences, but no one compares the male candidates to men who have previously held the position, solely based on their gender. Women candidates should not be given a pass on criticism regarding their policies. However, if candidates, voters and the media would stick to the issues, we may be able to attract a more diverse set of candidates, which would benet everyone.

GOP remains at odds with LGBT Americans

A year after its autopsy, not much has changed
By RAYMOND BUCKLEY One year ago, the Republican National Committee released a report commonly known as the GOP Autopsy Report that suggested that Republicans should show the LGBT community that we care about them, too. The report also said, We have become expert in how to provide ideological reinforcement to like-minded people, but devastatingly we have lost the ability to be persuasive with, or welcoming to, those who do not agree with us on every issue. Their recommendations werent shocking, since Republicans had long seen large decits in support among LGBT Americans. But one year later, nothing has changed. The simple fact is: the GOP has been on the wrong side of issues relating to LGBT equality

For example, a candidate for a Michigan seat on the Republican National Committee said of gay Americans, Republicans as a party should be purging this perversion and send them to a party with a much bigger tent. The Republican governor of Pennsylvania made an outlandish comparison between a same-sex marriage and the relationship between a brother and sister. And in recent days, a prominent Republican accused the LGBT community
of bullying Americans into opposing discriminatory measures. But its not just their rhetoric, its their agenda. As marriage equality has become law in many states across the country, including in my home state of New Hampshire, the GOP remains rmly opposed to allowing every American to marry the person they love. In fact, in Oklahoma, Republican Gov. Mary Fallin even went so far as to order the Oklahoma National Guard to stop processing requests for military benets for all couples just to prevent any benets from being processed for same-sex couples an action that di-
rectly deed a Pentagon directive. Additionally, Republicans blocked legislation that would protect LGBT Americans from workplace discrimination, saying it has no basis or no need. In fact, New Hampshires newest Senate candidate, Scott Brown, opposed the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, which protects LGBT Americans from being red just for being who they are. Its been a year since the Republican Party pledged to be more inclusive, but all it has done is highlight that the GOP continues to stand at odds with the values and priorities of LGBT Americans. As Democrats, we will not stop ghting for equality for all Americans. We will ght any measure that would discriminate against people just because of who they are or who they love, and we will stand up and ght back against rhetoric that promotes discrimination and further divides Americans.

At last, signs of progress in Michigan

New hope that one day I will return home to full civil rights
their fellow Michiganders. Without a doubt, I was beaming with pride for Michigan, where I was born and raised in Lansing and attended college at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. My home state became the latest ember the torch of marriage equality lit up in anticipation of a nationwide U.S. Supreme Court ruling next year. The ruling was a signal that when I return to the place where I grew up to see my parents and friends, I should expect to bring with me equal protection under the law for my (eventual) family. That view is in line with a majority of Michigan residents. According to a poll last year from the Michigan rm Epic MRA, 55 percent of Michigan voters are behind same-sex marriage, and that number inches up to 57 percent when respondents were told a change in law wouldnt mean religious organizations would have to perform same-sex wedding ceremonies. But my excitement is tempered because Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette are appealing the decision and working to ensure no gay couple can marry in the state as the litigation moves forward. In an op-ed for the Detroit Free Press, Schuette writes that its fundamentally wrong to treat people differently based on the color of skin, gender, race or ethnicity, but apparently has a different view on sexual orientation. The notion that marriage would be anything else has only emerged in the last few decades, Schuette writes. It is not irrational for voters to support the belief that a mom and a dad are not interchangeable. Its the latest in a string of anti-gay actions from an administration that bills itself as moderate in nature. I suppose we must give Snyder some credit for distancing himself from the anti-gay views spewing from Republican National Committee member Dave Agema, but the governor also signed into law a bill stripping Michigan public employees of same-sex partner benets an action that was eventually overturned by the courts. That hostility toward gay people, unfortunately, is the Michigan I remember growing up. Just recently, I saw a study on the bullying of youth that found body type and sexual orientation are two of the most common reasons why kids are harassed at school. I had both going for me. As a teen short of stature growing up in a blue-collar area who, for some reason, was not into girls like my classmates, I would often cry in my dads car before being dropped off for middle school in the morning and not want to go. Thankfully, I was never physically assaulted, but my fellow students intimidated me, excluded me from activities and spewed vitriolic comments about me (sometimes cloaked in religious proselytization) that made me and my education suffer. But, as I and so many others who had a similar experience found, it gets better. That kid grew up to move to D.C. and join the White House press corps as political reporter for the Washington Blade. Someone whod want to psychoanalyze me might see a link between my troubled youth and why I question sources so ercely when the administration isnt doing enough on LGBT rights. I look forward to the day when the lawsuit is settled and marriage equality is the law in my home state. Until then, my feelings about the situation are as conicted as I feel about Michigan, which, despite my move to D.C. nine years ago, in many ways is still home.

Time to move past negativity and focus on best interests of city
By ALAN ROTH LGBTQ voters in Ward One have a profound choice to make in the April 1 primary. Thats because when a new D.C. Council is sworn in next January, it will lack an openly gay Council member for the rst time in nearly 18 years unless Jim Graham is re-elected. With Jim being challenged by someone who has no real record or experience beyond the narrow boundaries of her former ANC single member district, and with David Catania giving up his at-large seat to run for mayor, now is the time for LGBTQ voters in the Ward to focus seriously on an old political adage: If youre not at the table, youre on the menu. Simply put, that adage reminds us there is no substitute for being represented by one of our own someone who, like Jim Graham, has lived what we have lived, experienced what we have experienced, and will never allow those personal life lessons to be cast aside for reasons of political expediency. It also means that if we arent at the ta-

ble as part of the decision making process, other politicians with other constituencies to serve are liable to be carving up our interests like a Thanksgiving turkey when the hard decisions (like funding for programs essential to our community) have to be made. Earlier this year, the Advocate named D.C. the gayest city in America. Its therefore difcult to imagine a D.C. Council without a single LGBT Council member someone with whom we would be able to have open, honest discussions about our issues and concerns when they arise. Before his election to the Council, Jim led the Whitman-Walker Clinic for more than 15 years, providing HIV/AIDS-related, STD, and other health services when few others would. On the Council, he has obviously been a leader on LGBTQ issues. His knowledge, understanding and support of our communitys concerns is not only unquestioned, it is unparalleled. As a former Adams Morgan ANC member and chair, I can attest personally to Jims devotion to his Ward and his commitment to providing the best constituent service in the Wilson Building. By contrast, most of what weve heard from Jims opponent turns primarily on innuendo and negativity. So let me confront the ethics issue head on, because I know its on some peoples minds, and lets begin here: After more than two years of public discussion and Post editorializing, no prosecutor has ever charged Jim with any crime; the one civil lawsuit led against him was dismissed; and not even his opponent has alleged that a penny of public or private money has found its way into his pockets. If youve actually read the reports of the Ethics Board and the Cadwalader law rm hired by WMATA, you could well conclude, as I have, that Jim in fact had the best interests of his Ward One constituents at heart when he questioned a certain bidders interest in developing the Florida Avenue Metro property involved in the most serious allegations against him. Cadwaladers report said many of Jims objections to the bidder and one of its principals appear to have been based on legitimate concerns with public safety and
welfare. For example, Graham was concerned with [that principals] reputation as a landlord as well as his ownership of a club in Ward 1 that had lost its license to operate due to a fatal stabbing of a club patron. Moreover, Council member Graham appeared genuinely concerned throughout the joint development process with the development experience and expertise of [this bidder] legitimate concerns that manifested themselves in the outcome of the process. Perhaps there were better ways to go about all this. Still, I dont have any doubt that Jims intent was to protect his Ward. Did he do it to benet himself personally? The Cadwalader report certainly found no evidence of that. Its time for us to move on. Lets focus on whats best for Ward One and D.C.s LGBTQ community over the next four years. Keeping our strongest representative on the D.C. Council by re-electing Jim Graham certainly beats being listed on the menu by relying on the platitudes and innuendo of an ambitious wannabe.

Rent Is Too Darn High slate will reform Dem State Committee
By ANGELA PEOPLES For some time now, wooing and turning out young voters is the name of the game for Democratic candidates at all levels of government. In the District of Columbia, an inux of young professionals over the last decade and the racial and socio-economic shift that have followed make engaging this group more important, yet more elusive than ever. Its hard to believe that this citys main draw for newcomers is the opportunity to work in politics and government, and somehow, that would mean local politics would take a back seat to the existential angst of being a 20or 30-something in this city, as Robert Samuels wrote in a Washington Post article last week referring to youth involvement in local elections. But Robert Samuels hasnt met the leaders behind the Rent Is Too Darn High slate. I moved to D.C. in 2008 with a laserlike focus on being a part of the movement for social change at the national level. As an advocate for the United States Student Association, a national youth advocacy organization, I was inspired daily by the energy, passion and ability of my peers working to make higher education affordable. Over the years, I developed roots in the District community. This community is comprised of people in similar circumstances: 20- and 30-year old D.C. transplants with deep progressive values and a belief in the power of people to change their surroundings.
Honing in on four key problems facing our community: a lack of good jobs, ever increasing costs of housing, prohibitive wages for our workers, and the denial of D.C.s claim to statehood.
The fact that our views at times clashed with our role in the rapidly gentrifying city we called home and yes, we do call D.C. home was not lost on me. Having been raised in a household of school board presidents and churchgoers, the call to contribute to my local community grew stronger. That calling brought me to the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club to help serve as the voice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Democrats in D.C. This group connects my passion for politics and progress with my commitment to being a community leader in the city I call home. And now, in the middle of my second term on the executive board of the Club, weve made it a point to engage young community members. Serving as a leader of the largest con-
stituent group in the D.C. Democratic Party has its challenges. There were those who questioned my authenticity, my ability to lead and even my sexuality. But for every one person who cast doubt on the spirit of this new generation of community leaders, there were two others who stood rmly behind us. I continue to be inspired by many of these leaders who answered the call to ght for change at home and across the country. Many of these folks are now running for City Council, leading local organizations like the Washington Interfaith Network, the Youth Pride Alliance, TransLaw, and the Latino/a GLBT History Project. One such group is the Rent Is Too Darn High slate for DC Democratic State Committee, the largest and most diverse slate seeking to give this body
a fresh start. So while the Washington Post might make a debatable argument about youth involvement in the mayoral election, what is absolutely clear is that young people and LGBT people are energized by and driving engagement in local politics. Representing the wisdom of longstanding community leaders joined by the fresh perspectives of young organizers, this slate is honing in on four key problems facing our community: a lack of good jobs, ever increasing costs of housing, prohibitive wages for our workers, and the denial of D.C.s claim to statehood. Im convinced that one path to changing these conditions is through the effective stewardship of the D.C. Democratic State Committee. For too long, this organization has fought against transparency and accountability, and now wrestles with the perception of being complicit in corruption. Unlike other candidates and slates, the Rent Is Too Darn High candidates bring native Washingtonians together with D.C. transplants to tackle head-on the policies depriving our communities of what they need to support their families. With Rent Is Too Darn High candidates at the helm of the D.C. Democratic State Committee, we can have a signicant role in bringing these issues in front of the mayors ofce and the City Council. So as a fellow D.C. community member, come April 1st, Im giving my support to all the candidates bearing the Rent Is Too Darn High name. And I urge all LGBT people committed to a new generation of Democratic leadership in D.C. to do the same.

I was surprised to see the Blade single out Don Beyer as someone who has changed his position on gay marriage since 1997. Lets be honest a vast number of Americans have changed their position on gay marriage since 1997, and that is something that should be applauded, not criticized. The truth is, like many of our friends and family, coworkers and neighbors, Don has evolved on this issue. In fact, Don evolved long before many of our current Democratic leaders. In 2003,
Don endorsed Howard Deans presidential campaign in a primary in which Dean and no other candidate was in favor of gay marriage. In 2006, when several Virginia Democrats joined Republicans in their crusade to ban gay marriage in the Commonwealth, Don personally contributed signicantly to the effort opposing the Defense of Marriage Act referendum in Virginia. In doing so, he bucked many in his own party and even the majority of Virginia voters. Don came to the conclusion that it was the right thing to do well before many others, including many in the
Democratic Party. When my partner and I decided to start our own family in 2002, Don and his wife were among the rst of our friends, gay or straight, to offer to help us. They have been unwavering advocates in the community for our family, which now includes two children, and we believe Dons experience and perspective will be critical to addressing the unique issues we face going forward. President Obama, Vice President Biden, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and nearly every Democratic elected ofcial in Virginia has progressed on
this issue, and ultimately, thats what matters. From prohibiting discrimination in housing, employment and elsewhere, to supporting the inclusion of sexual orientation-based crimes in hate crime statutes, Don has been a strong advocate for LGBT rights. To try to paint him as anything otherwise is disingenuous and misleading; it also does a disservice to the people of Virginia. I realize that in a crowded Democratic primary eld we look for points of differentiation among the candidates. This isnt one of them. Mark C. Lowham

Will gay community recognize itself in the mirror?

The reality of LGBT diversity dooms a communal political perspective
gay community was all too eager and pleased to have its self-worth portrayed in the context of economic power. In the days preceding the advent of rapid advancement and expansion in the geographic breadth of LGBT civil equality and breakthroughs on the right to marry, a marginalized market segment could take comfort in the fact that our measure mattered to someone. Our business prole trumped our political clout. The notion that the gay community differs signicantly in economic condition from the general population, however, is also likely overstated. In fact, education, economic background, locale, coupled status and occupational choices, among other divergent factors, tend to be of more importance. In other words, gays living in poverty are generally not poor because they are gay. Even the recent report by the LGBT-focused Williams Institute think tank at the UCLA law school trumpeting top-line assertions of a higher poverty level among gays and lesbians than heterosexual counterparts actually said as much. Buried in the detail was an acknowledgment that the conclusions came with the caveat of statistical uncertainty and are reective of a complex subset of circumstances. Some of the primary observations indicated relatively marginal comparative variation and were admittedly subject to the vagaries of a dearth of relevant or broad-based data. In other words, while a differential may well exist, it may not be substantial nor either attributable or unique to sexual orientation. As broad nationwide shifts in attitude accelerate causing more gay people in less accommodating areas to nd the courage to openly identify as gay, the diversity of our community becomes more evident. This both better reveals the range of who we are while simultaneously reecting the multiplicity of our economic conditions. In other words, we become visible as more like the rest of America. That is not to suggest that there are no real generational, situational or policy factors that impact the economics of those who are gay. However, the bewildering notion that any class distinctions are exclusively or even mostly due to discrimination based on sexual orientation is, at best, an oversimplication and, at worst, essentially false. In other words, replacing one myth with another is ridiculous. Yet LGBT leftists would have us believe otherwise. The clarion call by some activists to sound the alarm of victimization is a transparent attempt to prevent any further weakening in the already diminishing prevalence of cultural thoughtuniformity within the ranks. They suggest the solution to this purported intrinsic inequality is adoption of, and adherence to, a particular political perspective and ballot box agenda as obligatory simply because of being lesbian or gay. Suddenly it starts to feel like being gay is akin to being trapped inside a 1960s episode of old-fashioned televisions The Patty Duke Show where those gays, well, you know, they laugh alike, they walk alike, at times they even talk alike. The irony, of course, is that as the LGBT community is recognized from both inside and out as being as diverse as the rest of society, the closet door ings open to reveal that we, in fact, are. Attempts at enforcing a freedom-less communal hegemony in order to demand a collectivized political viewpoint within a community increasingly assimilated as the achievement of equality are ultimately doomed. In other words, we arent all the same.

By JIMMIE LUTHULI Many people in the D.C. LGBTQ political scene believe that we no longer need to judge candidates on LGBTQ issues because all candidates are equally supportive. I beg to differ. Not only did we see two Council members vote in opposition to marriage equality as recently as 2009, we have yet to achieve full participation of the Council in the Gertrude Stein Democratic Clubs endorsement process. Its true that direct opposition to equality has mostly come from politicians representing Wards 7 and 8, but the borders of D.C. span the Anacostia River. Additionally, there are some candidates who claim to support LGBTQ issues, but lack the vision and drive to achieve real change. In the race for D.C. Council atlarge, there is a candidate from Ward 8 who not only champions equality, but has the preparedness and initiative to bring about

substantive change. This candidate is Nate Bennett-Fleming. I served on the board of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club for two years and personally witnessed Nates unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ community. Other current and former board members concur. Bennett-Fleming earned the full endorsement of the Stein Club when he was running for Shadow Representative in both 2010 and 2012 and he was also awarded the Stein Clubs Champion of Equality Award. This year, he received the majority vote of Club members by earning 68 votes in comparison to the 51 earned by the incumbent. This outcome is truly commendable given the incumbents length of membership in the Club. It shows that astute LGBTQ Democrats are ready to see innovation on the D.C. Council and Bennett-Fleming is their choice in the at-large Council race. Bennett-Fleming also earned the highest score of any at-large Council candidate in the Gay & Lesbian Activists Alliance rating system. This shows that he has a deep understanding of the issues that affect the LGBTQ community and hes not vulnerable to the misconception that the struggle is over because weve achieved marriage equality. Nate has concrete solutions to pressing issues like transgender unemployment and smoking cessation among HIV-positive DC residents. In addition to connecting more transgender people with employment opportunities in D.C. government, BennettFleming would help them become entrepreneurs. Being the owner of your own
business can assist marginalized people in overcoming employment discrimination. With regard to tobacco, Bennett-Fleming acknowledges in his Stein Club questionnaire that smoking can affect HIV-positive residents disproportionately and more severely. Therefore, he would push for initiatives designed to curb smoking rates specically among HIV-positive D.C. residents. The quest for LGBTQ equality in D.C. is not over and all candidates are not the same. We need an advocate for our concerns who can navigate D.C.s political scene from Anacostia to Dupont Circle. Moreover, this individual must be committed to achieving tangible outcomes and not just offering up lip service. Nate Bennett-Fleming was endorsed by the Washington Post because it saw more promise in him than in any other candidate. Lets show that we support progress and productivity by casting our vote for Nate Bennett-Fleming on April 1 or during early voting.

Tomlin on getting married, Ernestine and Edith, Lucy, Carol and more
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO joeyd@washblade.com Comedic legend Lily Tomlin plays the Strathmore tonight. Last week she spent a delightful hour with us by phone from her Los Angeles home in as is typical for the actress a leisurely, rambling-in thebest-way conversation that few stars of her caliber make time for. Her comments have been slightly edited for length. WASHINGTON BLADE: How has comedy changed since you began? This show revives some classic characters and bits, but do you nd some elements might have been a scream in the 60s but fall at today? LILY TOMLIN: I imagine you wouldnt nd a whole lot that would still be relevant. I couldnt say that in a totally general way but overall, I would say the humor then would have been relative to something that was going on then. We didnt deal so much with universal truths in the sense of the human condition. We did a lot of snappy stuff that was going on at the time. When we were doing Laugh-In, Ronald Reagan was the governor and later he was the president so a lot of stuff we said was just Reagan and youd be watching Laugh-In on some cable show or something and they wouldnt say governor or president, they just said Ronald Reagan or Reagan, so much of what we said still applied when he was president. But in general, the values and taboos of society have changed a lot in 40 years. BLADE: Is it hard, then, to take your classic characters and make them work now on stage in a way that doesnt feel frozen in time? TOMLIN: Well, its just what you choose to put in their mouths. The last job Ernestine had was working for Health Care Insurance Corporation denying health care to everyone and prior to that she had a reality webcast chat show all during the Bush administration so she could call the president and presumably she had a webcam so she could see what he was doing. She could call Cheney or anybody and talk about something that was going on at the time.
BLADE: You dont think Ernestine would still be funny at the switchboard? TOMLIN: No because we hardly even have switchboards anymore and people barely know what an operator is. But that overbearing bureaucratic dominance still serves in other places. She left the phone company because they were no longer, you know, powerful or omnipotent. She would have had to compete for business. BLADE: What would Ernestine think of the revelations last year that Big Brother is listening in on everything? TOMLIN: Ive been trying to come up with a really great NSA sketch. The secret of it would be (slipping into Ernestines voice): A gracious hello this is the NSA, the only government agency that actually listens (snorts). BLADE: Ive seen you use her in unscripted formats, too. I remember Ernestine being interviewed once by Joan Rivers. I have no idea if she gave you the questions ahead of time or not, but that would seem quite nerve-wracking to me the pressure to be funny outside of the sketch format. Was it? TOMLIN: Well, I know her attitude. Its not like Ernestine doesnt live somewhere in my body, she does. Certain characters are especially good for that if theyre really opinionated and fairly short sighted or self interested and dont care about other peoples feelings. Then they probably improvise fairly well. BLADE: There was an op-ed shortly after you got married in which a lesbian wrote we came of age in a time when her one-woman shows changed how we understood ourselves as lesbians and feminists. To what degree in the 70s were you aware or were you aware that your work was not just being enjoyed by lesbians but sort of exalted and claimed in a sense? TOMLIN: Maybe claimed a little. My mother and dad are from Kentucky and even though I was born in Detroit, because Im well known and presumably semi-liked in Kentucky, I dont know for sure, but Kentucky sort of claims me in a way. Very often I read that I was Kentuckys own or born in Kentucky. In fact, I put my hands in cement there in some Kentucky hall of fame or something. I told them, But Im not really from Kentucky, and they said, No one will

care. Theyll be glad and theyll hope you are from Kentucky. So Im sure lesbians and other feminists, if I was good and doing good stuff and strong and intelligent, Id think theyd want to claim me in a sense that, well, you know, Shes one of us or whatever people might say in that kind of reference. Im sure even Mrs. Duggar, if she had one kid that became president of the United States, she might single him out. In any other case, she might not. These are my kids. Oh, this is Robert, my son, the president. I dont know how that stuff goes but even if it did, Im grateful for it in a sense because, you know, I want to communicate with people. Very often I really want to validate people, validate humanity to some extent. Were so invalidated in so many other ways and disregarded. Dismissed or thought of as just some lump mass of humanity thats disposable and exploitable. Rotten to the core. BLADE: How does comedy validate? TOMLIN: Just showing what you love and human situations and human
attitudes and you show the bad parts, but you show them in a way that we all possess them. Were all really in the same spaceship together. Politicians, to me, are a separate entity because theyre in a place where theyre actually affecting our lives in profound ways and attempting to do so and not always with the absolute soul of integrity. BLADE: I found (partner) Janes (Wagner) blog a few years ago quite funny when she wrote the blow-by-blow of trying to nd the right hot dogs and sunscreen on the Fourth of July. If that was any indication of the interplay between the two of you on something as trivial as nding hot dogs, how on earth did you discuss and settle on when, how or if to get married? (Tomlin and Wagner were married on New Years Eve after 42 years together.) TOMLIN: We didnt talk about it for a long time because we lived together so long where that wasnt even a glimmer of

I just fell in love with the sound and decided whats what I wanted to do, says the 36-year-old Naperville, Ill. native, who started playing at age 8. Its been a rich life for the most part. Since 1998 hes played with the United States Air Force Concert Band. Hes retiring in August. And a concert Saturday night with the Capital Pride Symphonic Band, which hes conducted for the past six years, is his swan song with that group. Their program, dubbed Dances!, is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Columbia Heights Education Campus Auditorium (3101 16th St., N.W.) and will feature everything from polka and tango to what Bello calls slower, lyrical-type pieces and more. Tickets are $20 ($10 for students/seniors; 12 and under free with an adult). Details are at dcdd.org. Bello has been in Washington for 16 years and lives in the Navy Yard section of town. He plans to move to Chicago in August to enter a doctoral program at Northwestern University. He hopes eventually to be a university band director. Keegans Hair is youthful, fun and solid

By PATRICK FOLLIARD With Keegan Theatres Helen Hayes Award-winning production of the Broadway musical Rent several seasons ago, company artistic director Mark A. Rhea and his wife Susan Marie Rhea rendered a glimpse into New York City bohemia in the 90s, insightfully tackling the shows big issues like homelessness, AIDS and art. Now the co-directors have turned their attention to another era with their version of Hair, the groundbreaking rock musical also set in Manhattan but in the turbulent late 60s. When Hair premiered in New York in 1967, its depiction of a counterculture youth was novel. Never before had bisexuality, interracial relationships, drug use, full frontal nudity and a strong antiwar sentiment been set to a beat you could dance to. Times were changing. Though less shocking today, Hair remains relevant, and so does Galt MacDermots timeless music (with book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragini): a score that includes Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In, Hair and Easy To Be Hard doesnt languish on the shelf. Hair is shaped more by a mood than a storyline. The plot is simple: A tribe of hippie kids pass the time dropping acid and making love in New York City. Theyre content. But then Uncle Sam upsets the adolescent idyll with invitations to Vietnam, and suddenly the band of merrymakers is forced to make a decision: burn your draft card or go to war. The shows central relationship is a bisexual love triangle involving the tribes puckish leader Berger (Josh Sticklin), Sheila (Carolina Wolfson) a socially conscience college freshman, and Claude (played with heartrending honesty by Paul Scanlan), a young guy from working class Queens with a faux British accent whos working out where he ts in Vietnam-era America. The original Hair featured a new kind of
physical affection between men, opening up the way for future onstage portrayals of relationships and sexuality. James Rado, co-creator and original star of Hair, has commented on his relationship with collaborator Gerome Ragni who died in 1991. Their relationship inspired the characters of Claude and Berger. Like youth itself, Hair is lled with anguish and joy. Overall, the directors have embraced the darker side of the show. Set designer Matthew Keenan has followed suit opting for dreary realism with a squatinspired two-tiered functional set. An old made over washing machine makes a tired salute to ower power. Keegans ensemble-generated Hair features a full voiced, 20-plus person cast accompanied by an onstage nine-piece orchestra led by Jake Null. Its a busy stage. While Rachel Leigh Dolans choreography celebrates the fun of communal living and a well-attended protest, it also functions as crowd control. Made up mostly of diverse local talent, the shows full-voiced cast is young and energetic. And though they look at home in their fringy vests, striped bell bottoms, granny skirts (compliments of costume designer Chelsey Schuller) and wild hair, they surely had to be familiarized with references to Spiro Agnew and others. While some of the acting, especially comedy, is lacking, their singing is largely on point they do the familiar songs justice. Standouts include Jade Jones who demonstrates a big soulful voice and comedic air. And Christian Montgomery is terric as Woof, a gay hippie boy who insists hes straight yet carries a very public torch for Mick Jagger. As with Keegans previous musicals, Hair offers a solid opportunity to see the work of area actors early in their careers.

Is poly a relationship cracker?

Sweeping potential deal-breaker issues under the rug will haunt you later
MICHAEL REPLIES: The two of you have some difcult territory ahead. It sounds as if you both have gotten into a my-way-or-the-highway situation. Whats needed is for you and Carol to take a serious look at whats important to each of you and to have a frank discussion where you listen to your spouse with curiosity. Given that you and Carol had very different feelings about polyamory from the get-go, it would have been useful to have spoken in depth about what a poly lifestyle might mean to both of you before you married and certainly before you had your daughter. However, its not too late to talk together about what you each value most, as a rst step toward guring out how to go forward. You may ultimately decide that you cannot stay in a relationship where your spouse is involved with another woman. But divorce is not a decision to be made impulsively just because youve hit gridlock. Especially because you have a young child together, theres an awful lot at stake in nding a way to preserve your marriage if this is possible. Divorce is usually very tough on children. Some questions for you to consider: What would it take for you to want to stay in this marriage? Can you tolerate Carols other relationship if she foregoes her sleepovers? Or do you really only want a monogamous relationship? Another question: Have you and Carol ever considered any rules or boundaries that might allow both of you to be content in your marriage? Such agreements are sometimes helpful, although they are not a guarantee of anything, and people often change their minds about what they are willing to tolerate. From your description, neither of you is going to get everything you want. But thats always the case. Marriage pushes us to gure out whats most important to us. Try to nd a way to be open minded and respectful of each others preferences for how you want to live your lives. Remember that blaming your partner for inexibility isnt going to lead her to shift in your direction. Because you have some complex work to do, consider working with a skilled couples therapist who can help you and Carol to gure out how to do your best here and to see if it is possible to collaborate on your future. DEAR MICHAEL, Ive been with my wife Carol for seven years and she told me from the start that she considered herself polyamorous. This was a little outside my comfort zone but given that she wasnt involved with anyone else, I didnt really worry about it and kept dating her. We fell in love and ultimately got married. We now have a 2-year old daughter. Carol has been seeing her new girlfriend Julie with increasing frequency for the past six months and now she wants to start spending one night a week at Julies place. Im unhappy for a few reasons. I think its presumptuous that I should regularly have to take care of our daughter alone. Were supposed to be a family unit and I dont know how Id explain to my daughter where Mommy Carol is one night a week. And Carols regular absence from my life because shes dating another woman is already damaging our relationship and making me jealous. Carol says I came into this relationship with my eyes open. True, but I didnt imagine the potential problems when I said yes. She also says that I should be happy that shes having a wonderful connection with Julie and that if I would stop being bitter, her greater fulllment in life would enrich our relationship. I think this is major self-serving B.S. Finally, she offers to give me a regular night off where I can leave all the childcare to her. But I like being home with our daughter and dont want a night off I just dont want to be left alone with all the responsibility once a week while she is off having sex with another woman. Is there some way to compromise? Because right now its hard to see myself staying in this marriage, and I strongly suspect that Carol feels the same way.

Out athlete was late bloomer in swimming

By KEVIN MAJOROS This week in the continuing series on the LGBT athletes of Washington who will be competing at the 2014 Cleveland/Akron Gay Games, we visit with swimmer Lindsey Warren-Shriner of the District of Columbia Aquatics Club. Warren-Shriner was recently awarded the Rick Meier Windes Memorial Award in recognition of excellence in distance swimming for her performance at the International Gay & Lesbian Aquatics Championships in Seattle in 2013. WASHINGTON BLADE: What is your swimming background? LINDSEY WARREN-SHRINER: I took an introduction to competitive swimming class during the fall of my (high school) freshman year to fulll my P .E. requirement and tried out for the varsity swim team that winter and didnt make it. I took the class again during the fall of my sophomore year and made the team that winter. That rst year, I was one of the slowest swimmers and didnt even compete with the team at championships. By my senior year, I had started to focus on distance events and dropped more than 30 seconds from my 500-yard freestyle time in one season. That led to me talking to swim coaches as I visited colleges, which was not something I would have expected even a year earlier. I went on to swim for Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania for two years and then transferred to Bowdoin College in Maine, in part because they had a phenomenal swim program. I have been swimming with DCAC since I graduated and moved to D.C. almost four years ago, and I have also done several triathlons and open water races. BLADE: Did you play any other sports
growing up? WARREN-SHRINER: I did a lot soccer, basketball, softball and tennis and was really bad at all of them. I denitely wasnt great when I started swimming either, but I liked it from the beginning and was more motivated to get better than I had been with any other sport. BLADE: What events will you compete in at the Gay Games? WARREN-SHRINER: Ill be doing all of the distance events the 200-, 400-, 800and 1,500-meter freestyle events and the 400-meter individual medley. BLADE: What will your training regimen consist of leading up to the Gay Games? WARREN-SHRINER: I usually go to six or seven DCAC practices a week. I dont really like going to the gym so I stick with swimming. We practice for an hour and a half and I usually end up swimming almost 4,000 yards a day. We also have one night a week where we have a distance-oriented workout which is good preparation for the events I swim. BLADE: What is it about swimming that keeps you in the sport? WARREN-SHRINER: Since I started swimming competitively much later than most of my college teammates, I wasnt ready to stop swimming when I graduated. I found a great team in DCAC that has motivated me to keep swimming in the almost four years that I have been living here. All of my closest friends in D.C. are swimmers and I love to still have the routine of going to practice every day. While I was fortunate to have had incredibly supportive teammates and coaches as an out athlete in college, being on an LGBT team and a part of that community here has denitely kept me in the sport of swimming as well.

Tomlin hopes to validate humanity with comedy

a hope or a possibility. She and I would have liked to have been married and last fall, maybe October or November or something, I said, You know, maybe we should. We were both of the same mind so we just decided to get married. I dont know if youve been on our Facebook, but we made a little thing about it and showed where we went to the license bureau and we just wanted a nice, simple, sweet, quiet little ceremony so we went to Van Nuys, we went out of the way because we didnt want to be usurped, our control of the situation, you know, Oh, Jane and Lily were at the license bureau. But there was so much there, that we made this little vignette of it and it shows us in front of the building. Its just this old, one-story kind of at motor vehicle kind-of place. Theres nothing grand or majestic about it, like some old courthouse from another era or anything. And then you stand in line with a bunch of other people and there were young people in tuxedos and bridal dresses. Then you go in another room and this woman who looks like Ruth Bader she has on a black cloak, and she takes them in there and marries them right on the spot. Families were there and theyre so dear. These couples getting married, and you think, Oh God, help us, all these young kids getting married and you dont even , you know, I worry about them like a mother. Do they have a place to live, any kind of a decent job, are they gonna have kids, and they dont have any idea what it takes to raise those kids, the money it costs. So we get up to the window and we get our license and then we go outside and there was a hot dog stand with a little cart and a multi-colored umbrella, so we used that as our backdrop. Its just like four little photos. Now youre gonna go and expect like a feature lm or something, but it was just our little way to acknowledge it. We didnt post it till after we got married, which we did on New Years Eve. BLADE: Does it feel any different? Was there any psychological shift or anything you werent expecting? TOMLIN: I havent perceived it. Maybe there is, kind of. The nice part about it is that its out in the public. Not that that many people would have known we were together anyway, but when its reported that youre married, its so kind of ofcial. The best part is that Jane is from Tennessee and my parents are from Kentucky so we have southern families and my family more than hers were more fundamentalist BLADE: You were raised Southern Baptist, right? TOMLIN: Well, my dad wasnt really. He was a drinker and a gambler and I went to the bookie joints with him and every Sunday when I was a kid, because of all the re and
brimstone that goes on in the fundamentalist church, I would sit up in the kitchen with my dad. We had an old Formica table and I was maybe 5 or 6 or 7 and I was worried about my father not going to heaven. My dad would be having a beer and some sardines and crackers like on a Sunday morning and my mother is getting ready for church and Id be up there in the middle of the table trying to get daddy to go to church with us. Argh. Anyway, my mother and dad are both totally individual and funny so I would go to the bookie joints with my dad on Saturdays and to church with my mom on Sundays. Lets see, where was I going with this the best part of the marriage thing, aside from us being together, was that we heard from a lot of relatives, not my mothers generation really, cause theyre mostly gone, they would have been a little taken aback, but the next generation, we got lots of cards and messages from relatives that you never would have gotten even 10 years ago, congratulating us. Very loving, very sweet. So I thought that was the most miraculous part of it. BLADE: You were on the Merv Grifn Show several times early in your career. Did you have any awareness at the time that he was gay? TOMLIN: No, I dont think so. Well, by the time I was in my 20s, I suppose I did. There were these rumors that young men were always kind of in his sphere somewhere so yes, I heard all that kind of gossip, especially being gay, other gay people fostered that kind of gossip. They were glad to hear about something like that. So yes, it was probably fairly well considered and Im sure I was privy to that conversation at some point. BLADE: I know the story about the Time magazine offer (in 1975, they offered her the cover if shed come out) but then years later, like maybe in the late 80s or 90s you were doing stuff like Celluloid Closet, The Band Played On and Will & Grace. Was there a point where you decided to start saying yes to those kinds of projects that you might not have done, say, a decade before? TOMLIN: I never would have said no to them but I might not have called a press conference to declare my sexuality. At that time, rst of all, it gets to be a little bit grandstandy for someone like me. I called Vito Russo and told him about the Time offer and said, I just dont know if I can handle it, Im a little bit insulted, Im a little bit everything, because it was more like they just needed a gay person. It was like with the actor Cliff Gorman who was in Boys in the Band, he was straight but he was very worried about his career so whenever he gave an interview, hes always make sure you knew he wasnt gay. So we just ipped it around, you know, and when I did end up giving an interview to Time,
we made sure they understood I wasnt straight and we put a little bit about that on the album we were working on at the time, Modern Scream. And of course nothing was ever said about it, written about it, anything. The album wasnt a big hit. It wasnt like I was some big recording artist who sold a lot, but my early albums had been fairly successful because of LaughIn, Ernestine and Edith. I didnt want to decline it, but I didnt want to accept it, so I decided, Im not going down without throwing a punch. BLADE: Now at times, some up-andcomers use it in reverse being out as part of their marketing campaign. For people who are genuinely talented, do you think thats harmful? TOMLIN: It depends on what kind of work theyve done or theyre doing. Look at Neil Patrick Harris. Hes hugely popular and sought after, but of course, we knew him as a kid. But hes a very good singer, actor, dancer and hes got a lot of charm. Things have turned around so profoundly but the thing that terries you is if some right wing evangelist kind of person gets in, or we lose the Senate or we get a Republican president, you dont know how far they will go to repeal something. Theres such a sense of celebration now and its kind of taken for granted but if some crazy person gets in there and theres that limitation and philosophy where they spiritualize everything, they just nail down on these issues and they want to repeal any kind of progressive advance. Its pretty scary when you see whats going on in other parts of the world. BLADE: Yeah, like what we saw in Russia during the Olympics. TOMLIN: Right. We did a little thing actually I wish we could have been in D.C. when we did it, but I say I was thrown in jail but thank God, I knew Ernestine and she got us out. So we make fun of it. We made a graphic where we show Putin bare-chested on a horse and Ernestine is riding bareback behind him. BLADE: So your show isnt just Lilys greatest hits then. TOMLIN: No. BLADE: Do you enjoy working on the material? TOMLIN: I do. We have some pieces that we still do that work well because I love them so much and I think theyre terribly funny. So its kind of a mix. Were trying to do something worthwhile but that is also fun and hopefully thoughtful, hopefully even moving in some way at some point. How old are you? BLADE: 39, but you know gay men often know pop culture before their time way
more than straight men. TOMLIN: Oh my God, yes. Paul, this photographer and musician who works with me, he kills me because theres nothing that happens on a daily basis at our house, ofce or anything, that he cant relate it to a Lucy episode. BLADE: Thats a great quality to have. TOMLIN: Oh, its so dear. I just scream laughing. BLADE: Whats your favorite? TOMLIN: Well, when I was a kid, slowly I turn, because it looked like the kind of performance piece I could do. The ballet class, too. BLADE: You guested on The Carol Burnett Show right? TOMLIN: Oh yeah. BLADE: Lots of people are on sitcoms but you and Carol and a few others are known for certain characters. Did you feel comedic camaraderie with her? TOMLIN: Well, Id known her a long time. One very hot moment for me, one very happy moment, I was at CBS maybe I was doing my rst special or maybe I was just guesting on some show like Glen Campbell or something. When I got Laugh-In, Glen Campbell was the rst show I guested on and Carol, of course, shot at CBS. I was in the ladies room and she came in and threw her arms around me and called my name. That just made me very happy that she knew who I was and was so demonstrative with me. Shes an extremely dear person anyway. BLADE: Did you know Lucille Ball? TOMLIN: I read an article with her once and they were asking her about new young comedians, mostly girls, and when they got to me, she said, I dont get her. My heart broke but later I met her and she told a very funny story, and acted it out for about 20 minutes, about how she had had to get a root canal the day of the Tonys. To hear her tell it in person was just sublime. BLADE: She seemed like she could be a bit of a tough customer. Crusty, maybe. TOMLIN: Everybody says that, yeah. BLADE: Maybe she felt more liberated as she got older. More candid. Do you ever feel that way? TOMLIN: Not really. I have a hard time realizing Im as old as I am. I dont feel that old. I still feel innocent in some ways.

Coping with necessary evils of buying

Altered timelines, complicated loan process may await
By VALERIE M. BLAKE Who knows what evil lurks behind the drywall and in the hearts of mortgage underwriters? The Shadow knows. The Shadow retired from his job as a radio crime ghter in 1954, but much like the superheroes of today, he possessed powers far beyond those of a normal human being: astonishing reexes, the muscular control of a contortionist and the ability to alter his facial features to hide in plain sight or impersonate others. As a hypnotist, The Shadow could cloud mens minds and he could survive without air for hours. Today he would probably make an excellent home inspector, battling the Wet Foundation Corporation as they attempt to inltrate the research facility known as The Basement, where the Red Termite is planning the destruction of Capital City. But I digress. Many local real estate agents now have a long list of clients in various stages of preparing to buy a home. Agents and buyers alike are anxiously awaiting a surge of inventory that we hope will spring up like cherry blossoms the moment the nal dusting of snow trickles into the sewers of the District. With more sellers dipping their proverbial toes into the market than last year, opportunities to buy exist, but as yet do not abound, resulting in a series of necessary evils with which a prospective homeowner must contend. Altered Timelines: I used to be able to tell people who were renting to begin getting ready to buy about three months prior to the expiration of a lease. Now, due to increasingly cumbersome aspects of mortgage lending and the dearth of available homes in nearly every price range, I advise them to double that timeline, especially if they are just beginning their search online or starting to visit open houses to get a sense of what their money will buy in different parts of the metropolitan area. Agent Selection: Many buyers commonly treat open house sign-in sheets as one of the necessary evils of the buying process, scribbling illegible names and email addresses or providing incorrect telephone numbers so they wont be contacted by agents before theyre ready to take the next step. In the current, fast-paced market, however, its critical to align oneself with a buyers agent earlier in the process to obtain the professional guidance needed for success. As you ne-tune your list of wants, needs and neighborhoods, your agent lurks in the shadows like Progressives Flo, seeking opportunities for you on and off-market and quickly spiriting you away to each new listing even before it hits your inbox. By MARK LEE FIT Personal Training founder Michael Everts refers to his business as an institute of higher learning for tness more than an exercise gym and workout center. That distinction has proven key to the success of the soft-spoken 38-year-old owners enterprise, located on the lower level at the corner of 17th and Q streets in the Dupont Circle area. Always knowing he would work for himself, Everts launched what is now the oldest personal training gym in Dupont at 1633 Q St., N.W., in Dec. 2002. The highprole spot at the center of the 17th Street commercial strip garnered immediate attention. There werent a lot of similar options when I opened FIT, Everts recalls. It was his tness philosophy, however, that attracted clients to the one-on-one personalized approach he offered, initially as the sole trainer. Everts now employs 14 part-time and full-time trainers assisting a diverse clientele that has evolved alongside neighborhood demographics. Specializing in individualized instruction for clients with a wide range of objectives, Everts has assembled an experienced staff roster. Our trainers have comprehensive knowledge, allowing us to teach people how to work out with a plan covering all aspects of health, exercise and tness, Everts emphasizes. Hiring professionals with very strong academic credentials, Everts employs trainers with a minimum ve years experience and multiple accreditations. I know how much Ive learned, he adds, and continue to learn about all areas of tness. Were not a place that checks exercises off a list, instead designing strategies for achieving goals. Most new participants come from referrals, he notes, but we also get a lot of walk-in inquiries from people who have seen our sign or website and heard good things about us, as well as those working in the surrounding area. One of those trainers is Alvaro Maldonado, domestic partner to Everts, and director of local non-prot dance-theatre company Ballet Teatro Internacional. Maldonados training in both classical and modern dance expanded expertise in stretching and alignment techniques. The couple met shortly after Everts opened FIT and they now live above the gym in the mixed-use building with their two surrogacy-born children. In addition to training clients, Maldonado assists with administrative tasks and marketing projects. They share childrearing duties for ve-year-old son Paolo and ve-monthold daughter Sasha. The motivation for Everts to provide guidance to those focusing on their wellbeing is exemplied in his obvious pleasure ducking out of the gym to meet Paolo after his pre-K classes at Ross Elementary School a block away. The best bang for your buck, Everts says, is investing in your health and not being limited by coordination, alignment, or core strength. Its the kind of tness that allows him to playfully lift Paolo up as they walk home from school together.
