Keeper Anticipation Drill: This drill is designed for our keeper to work on slides when the ball goes to the corner in our 1-3-1. She is responsible for keeping ball off the high post and reading the shoulders of the ball handler in the corner.

Pusher Anticipation Drill: Same concepts as the pusher will read the shoulders of the coach and try to get deflections. Drill can be done on both sides of the floor.

Clogger Anticipation Drill Part 1: Offense aligns in a box formation and coaches should placed at the top and in corner with two other players opposite as passers. Clogger tries to deflect as many passes in a 20-30 second interval. Coaches should have managers or players not in the drill continuously feeding coach ball if its knocked out of play.

Piston Drill: This is by far the most important drill in teaching our 1-3-1. This drill incorporates the pushers and keeper working together in a piston fashion. They must communiction who is "big on" and who is "wide off" the ball. In this fram a coach will start with a ball and a pusher is big on the ball. The keeper than can back off and play passing lane back to the other coach. The weakside pusher splits the difference from the block player and other coach.

On a pass from coach to coach, the weakside pusher X3 makes a defensive V cut and plays the passing lane 1st and tries to deflect the pass from the coach to the corner. The coach can also look to throw the diagonal pass while X2 sprints to deflect and steal block pass.

Drill continues in similar fashion as coaches throw guard to guard pass and pusher v-cuts and approaches the ball hands high while weakside pusher sprints to deflect the pass to the block.

Warrior Anticipation Drill: This drill is simulate the warrior getting screened along the baseline which is a common attack we see vs. our 1-3-1. Coaches pass back and forth and warrior must fight through contiunuos baseline screens. We teach fighting low through these screens forcing offense away from scoring area and if late to corner it funnels offense back into our umbrella trap. Drill continues for 20-25 seconds or when a certain number of deflections are met. Teaching point is that X1 should always be in line with the basketball.

5-guard 8 Shell is the last drill we do as team work on our team slides and communication. Defense is obviously at a disadvantage so they must have tremendous bounce, effort, and communication. Drill is live and offense tries to score but penetration can only come from the 4 corners of the floor. Block players are stationary and the elbow offensive player goes elbow to elbow.

Drill Continues as ball is passed around. We play a 3:00 game and offense tries to score and buid up as many points as possible. We then flip and other team goes on offense.

If shot comes from the corner we are vulnerable on the weakside boards so we must run or keeper to the weakside boards to help the pusher. Statistically, 7/10 will bounce weakside so we must attack the weakside boards. The clogger must spin and get to the block are.
