In remedies around the world, coconut is used to treat a wide assortment of

ailments including abscesses, alopecia, amenorrhea, asthma, blenorrhagia (vaginal discharge), bronchitis, bruises, burns, colds, constipation, cough, debility, dysentery, dysmenorrheal (painful periods), earache, fever, flu, gingivitis, gonorrhea, jaundice, , nausea, rash, scabies, scurvy, sore throat, stomachache, swelling, syphilis, toothache, tuberculosis, tumors, typhoid, venereal diseases, and wounds.1 This study investigated some pharmacological properties of virgin coconut oil (VCO), the natural pure oil from coconut, which was prepared without using chemical or high-heat treatment. The results obtained suggest anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic (fever reducing) properties of VCO.2 (Topical application study)

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance, coupled with the availability of fewer antifungal agents with fungicidal actions, prompted this present study to characterize Candida species in our environment and determine the effectiveness of virgin coconut oil as an antifungal agent on these species. It is noteworthy that coconut oil was active against species of Candida at 100% concentration compared to fluconazole. Coconut oil should be used in the treatment of fungal infections in view of emerging drug-resistant Candida species.3 (Internal application study) VCO-treated wounds healed much faster. The beneficial effect of VCO can be attributed to the cumulative effect of various biologically active minor components present in it.4 (Topical application
study)

Today, virgin coconut oil (VCO) is becoming valuable oil and is receiving an attractive topic for researchers because of its several biological activities. In cosmetics industry, VCO is excellent material which functions as a skin moisturizer and softener.5 (Topical application study)

The results demonstrated the potential beneficiary effect of virgin coconut oil in lowering lipid levels in serum and tissues and LDL (bad cholesterol) oxidation by physiological oxidants. This property of VCO may be attributed to the biologically active polyphenol components present in the oil.6 (Internal application study)
