JULY NEWSLETTER 1976

Dear Friends:

I'm sitting here before our big blue and red tent in Lug ano, Switzerland. A few clouds are making i t past- the ridge of high mountains to the north. This high range
forms the dividingline between this climate and the

more rainy one to

the north. Gu^__Mayfield was so right

when he selected the Lugano area for the first Lugano Camp in 19,6.4. The natural beauty, good climate and rec-

reationa'l possibilities make this an inviting place for

families to spend their vacation. We try to take advantage of the physical to proclaim the spiritual.
GERMAN CAMP

My memory serves me best back about two weeks.

July 11th

we took the family and Frau Robert to the camp in the Black Forest-. I 'call i t the German Camp because the Phillips family started i t primarily for German children. This year there were as many American children in the
group as German. After getting set up on Sunday, we had classes on Monday. I helped with the bi-lingual song services and taught a Jr. Hi. Class in English. Noon
meal Monday was sausages with french fries. It was dur

ing this meal that the black clouds started rolling in.

After eating, a few of us ran back to the hill top camp and
began securing tents. The rain and hail came. Bill Rosnett's tent fell in, others just leaked, ours too. After the worst

blew over we took inventory,

A mountain of wet sleeping bagsl

How thankful we were for a large dryer on the groundsWe expected better weather the next daybut i t rained most of the night and all morning. Mary and Diane Miller served us all breakfast in our respective tents. Alva Phillips felt that we were in a hopeless situation, having absolutely no

facilities except tents, mostly small ones, so we decided to give up. By Tuesday evening we were back in the Frankfurt
area.

GOOD-BYE LARRY, HELLO LUGANO!

With the extra week at home, we realized we,

at last, would

have time to work on our old tent. We bought i t in 1968. We were able to have Larry White over to spend most of the week with us before he returned to Iowa. Marsha, his wife, was already gone. He was a lot of help as we sewed in loops for guide lines and repaired holes. We sprayed part with waterproffing, too. We could tell how badly we needed the extra time at home by the good feeling at all we were able to get done. We said good-bye to Larry again, and by now we already miss him and Marsha. By-the-way Larry, the tent leaked, but not where you said it would! We are hoping before next year to be able to exchange the dust and dirt

of ou^^.J:;^nt for the cleanliness and order of a camping

We would especially like to be able to use a

.trailer-,./

camper-;in the winter as a place to go for rest and relax-

Looking over the past year I think that would help a lot in keeping up our energy around home.
THE LUGANO CAMP

I'm back home now. Over two weeks has passed since I started this letter. I'm sorry its late. We like to mail i t to Carterville by the end of the month but that was impossible. There were fewer than usual at camp this year. J3inetv-nine in all if we include the ones who didn't stay all week,

Bryan is one of our new ones here at Frankfurt. We are always proud when our local folks take leadership re sponsibilities in our activities. Fred Ragland serves
on the committee for the Fall Retreat.

It's sure been wonderful these past two months to have greater financial security. We thank God for using many of you toward this end. Surely His love is shed abroad through your hearts. The end of June the Huhn family from Belgium came to see us and say good-bye. They are returning to the U.S. This family has been such a blessing to us. One glance at our finance report and you can see their generosity. Their participation in various activities has also been great. Personal con
tact with this family is also a blessing. Bob Huhn is

a business minded, spiritual man.
