Teen Cancer: Its not that easy Senior Capstone Fall 2013 K. Matehuala Proposal I.

Introduction A year ago I was just an ordinary teenager going to highschool.I was learning the material I needed to learn and do in order for me to reach my goal. That goal was to become a mechanical engineer; I was already skilled in math so I didnt have much trouble in that area, however all of it changed in an instance. About 2 months later I was diagnosed with cancer; Essentially, something goes haywire in the DNA of your cells, sometimes for no known reason, and the malignant (cancerous) cells crowd out your good cells. (TeensLivingWithCancer) I had a tumor. I felt horrible knowing that all my studies and work had to be put on hold. As I was going through months of chemotherapy I became to look at everything in life so differently. Being a teen that has gone through months of chemotherapy dont think its a pleasant experience. Finding out you have cancer is hard. Finding out you have cancer when youre still in high school, or college, or just starting a career or a family can be even harder. (NCCA) Knowing the feelings and emotions while being in the hospital made me realize that no one should ever go through that experience. Having cancer gave me an inspiration for my Capstone project. The challenges I will face in my project is trying to talk to people about my experience since it brings all the emotions back from my experience. My initial argument will be that to help and spread awareness to teens and adults. That cancer is hard on teens as well since we also have personal and school problems. Form

My Capstone project will take two forms. The first from will be a 6-8 page college research paper with citations and work-cited page. My second form will be footage of me volunteering in a hospital with patients that are going through cancer treatments and a documentary. I will present my studies of research and learning experience to the students and staff of International Sharpstown at my Presentation and Defense of Learning at the end of the semester. In my presentation I will defend my research argument and learning objectives. The audience will be students and staff of International Sharpstown. V. Preparation
