ANOTHER GREAT SHOW

From new technology to fresh perspectives, the Expo was well worth the trip

he 2014 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo is in the books. It was another great week in Indy, and it was great to get to talk to so many people from across the industry. And its always nice to get a close-up look at the newest equipment and technology. There were so many new products, many launched right at the Expo, from

and talking to you. I speak with many of you from my desk in Northern Wisconsin, but the opportunity to meet face to face, to speak with you directly and hear your stories in person really brings everything together. Its great to hear how the work were doing at GOMC is making an impact on your work. Thats the goal, and its also the greatest reward.

There were so many new products, many launched right at the Expo, from cutting-edge jetter trucks to redesigned pumps and the latest and greatest hydroexcavators.
cutting-edge jetter trucks to redesigned pumps and the latest and greatest hydroexcavators. It was truly a glimpse into the future of this industry and the potential of your business, and it was all there on display. Beyond the technology, the greatest part of the Expo for me is always meeting At the 2014 Expo, I met Chris Mihaletos, a native of South Africa who now calls Phoenix home. His company provides cleaning, hydroblasting, hydroexcavation and a host of other services, and after more than a decade in business, the company now has a staff of 150 and several locations across the West. The company is tackling some interesting jobs, including cleaning and prep work to reopen old mines in their territory. Theyre also beginning to take on more oileld work.

And there were many others. There are so many stories to be told, and its an honor to convey them to you. You can look forward to seeing some of them in the pages of GOMC as we move forward. And while were looking ahead, take note that next year the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International will become WWETT the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment and Transport show. We understand that like the industry, this show has evolved to encompass far more than septic pumping and drain cleaning and now represents many of the support services youre providing on a daily basis. The new name better reects the industry and this show. Its a more accurate snapshot of what we have become and where we are heading. Its a show for an entire industry of hard-working people who maintain the ow in our sewer and water infrastructure, properly treat and dispose of wastewater, and keep drinking water safe and our environment healthy. COLE Publishing has always used the annual Expo to show our appreciation for the work you do, day in and day out. That wont change. Though often overlooked by others, we understand that what you do is vital to the industry and communities you serve. If you couldnt make it to Indy, start planning now so you can be there next year. Its the best thing you can do for your business. Enjoy this months issue. GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - APRIL 2014

SpillThe growth of VZ Environmental, based in Fort Worth, Texas, stems from a simple formula for business success: Spot an undeveloped market niche/customer need, capitalize on it by developing several innovative products, then provide great customer service out in the eld. But thats deceptively simple; it also required a good idea, a little business savvy, a penchant for risk-taking, a lot of hard work and the help of a longtime oilindustry veteran. Jones unlikely story begins in 2009 with an even unlikelier start: She went from sales rep to unemployed when the oil and gas industry service company she worked for closed her regional ofce. But the entrepreneurial-minded Jones turned her predicament into a make-lemonade-from-lemons moment. As she faced this crossroads in her young career, Jones got an unexpected call from a former client who needed uid-containment devices in the Marcellus Shale play in Pennsylvania. Intrigued by the prospect, she contacted Mark Matson, the owner of ACF Tarp and Awning, a Fort Worth company that makes custom awnings, canopies and truck tarps. Jones knew Matson, who worked in the oilelds for 12 years before starting ACF, because their sons played on the same high school football team. So Mark and I put our heads together and designed containment devices for this customer, Jones recalls. Then, through relationships Id established with customers from my old employer, I realized there was a good market for containment devices in the Barnett Shale play here in North Texas.

PROOF

An unexpected call leads to a new enterprise for an entrepreneur with industry ties and household know-how By Ken Wysocky

Its not often that a former stay-at-home soccer mom becomes the head of a gas and oileld support-services company. But thats exactly where Carol Jones nds herself, a scant four years after she founded VZ Environmental, a company that provides uid- and dust-containment products and services for drilling companies and contractors.

At rst, Jones envisioned her company as a retail supplier of containment devices, which catch uids that leak from equipment, lines and tanks on drilling rigs. But customers kept asking for help in setting up and removing the containment units, which led to an aha moment for Jones: VZ Environmental should expand into the service business, too.

Time is money when youre setting up fracking equipment. When youre on a drilling pad, youve got to get your part of the service done as quickly as possible so the fracking can commence.
Mark Matson We needed to be a service provider because customers needed it, she says. And once one operator used us, other major operators in the region jumped on board. I was able to leverage old contacts from my previous job. Word-of-mouth referrals helped, too. As we grew, I hired a lot of those laid-off employees I used to work with at my old job. Two intangibles worked in Jones favor to create demand for containment devices. First of all, parts of the Barnett Shale play stand in high-impact, well-developed

urban areas. As such, drilling companies want to operate as unobtrusively and inconspicuously as possible to minimize complaints about nuisance factors, such as uid spills, dust and so forth. Second, those same companies want to be known as proactive environmental stewards, Jones says. CONTAINMENT INNOVATIONS VZ Environmental currently rents and services three basic products developed in conjunction with ACF. The rst is called VMatz, a modular unit that consists of a vinyl, chemicalresistant drip pan (oor) with bright-yellow, detachable driveover walls that form a leak-proof barrier. Made of vinyl-encased foam, the walls spring back into place if a vehicle drives over them. Contractors place machines and equipment atop the VMatz, which can be custom-made to various sizes. Thanks to the detachable VMatz walls, the modular units are much lighter than if they were one whole unit. A typical VMatz with 6-inch-high walls, or berms, might be as small as 4 feet square or as large as 30 by 60 feet. That smaller unit weighs about 8 pounds and the larger one weighs about 175 pounds, Matson says.

We try to fashion our schedules like traditional companies so employees dont have to live in man camps and work consecutive days without going home.
Carol Jones

There are other drip- and spill-containment devices out there, but they have rigid walls and use L-shaped brackets to stay upright, Jones explains. But the brackets pose trip and puncture hazards, so we were asked to come up with a better design. Marks know-how really paid off in the design of the containment units, she adds, noting that the modular design makes for easy transport, deployment and storage. This has been vitally important to the success of the business because it increases efciency and productivity. Time is money when youre setting up fracking equipment, Matson says. When youre on a drilling pad, youve got to get your part of the service done as quickly as possible so the fracking can commence. The second product is called VPondz. It features 2- to 4-foot-high walls and is used for higher-volume spill containment. For example, drilling companies might place large water or owback tanks inside a VPondz unit in case a tank leaks or ruptures. Like VMatz, the size of each unit varies; larger ones might reach 23,000 square feet in size, Matson says. Crews rst erect the walls, then lay out prefabricated rolls of tarp. Then crews vulcanize the tarps together to form a leak-proof barrier. The goal is

to minimize the seaming on the job site because its usually hot and windy, Matson explains. Wed rather do the seaming in a more controlled environment in our yards, where we do the majority of the fabrication. Sometimes we might have to use a forklift to unload the tarps, but usually theyre light enough for manual lifting. The third product, VSoxz, is used primarily to control dust created while unloading silica sand. As its name implies, the device is basically a large socklike bag made of a proprietary fabric that passively lters dust and other particles. Crews place the custom-made, reusable VSoxz over hatches on bulkproppant storage units; the bags inate automatically as silica sand is off-loaded from pneumatic trailers into the storage units. During off-loading, the bags allow positive air pressure to escape, but trap dangerous and unsightly silica-dust particles. VZ Environmental employees endure rigorous working conditions in the oil and gas elds. In temperatures as high as 120 degrees, theyre required to wear personal protective equipment, such as overalls with reective tape, impact gloves, goggles, hard hats and steel-toed boots, plus chemical-resistant aprons and face shields as needed. When they work with water, employees also don rain gear. Its a booming industry and unemployment is low, so theres lot of competition for jobs, Matson observes. Guys work long days in hot weather and its a physical job even without being decked out in long sleeves, boots and so forth. Protective clothes dont breathe well, so its hot work out there. KEEPING EMPLOYEES HAPPY To compensate for the tough working conditions, VZ Environmental uses various means to attract and retain employees. The company provides vigorous job and safety training and offers competitive pay, plus medical, dental and vision insurance. In addition, the company has strategically positioned its four service

yards in areas where the majority of employees live South Texas, West Texas, North Texas and Oklahoma as opposed to centrally locating them in various oil and gas shale plays. That way our employees can go home every night to their families, Jones notes. If the service yards were located in the heart of these shale plays, those employees many times would work ve days on, three days off, or some similar kind of rotation. We try to fashion our schedules like traditional companies so employees dont have to live in man camps and work consecutive days without going home. Even with the strategic yard locations, employees still might have to drive up to three hours to job sites. The company uses GPS tracking in all service vehicles and employees also use smartphones to get their bearings, but phone service can be spotty. So even with all that technology, nding remote drilling sites can be problematic. West Texas is pretty darn big and some employees arent from around there, Matson says. Often enough, the roads they need to nd are ranch roads that arent on maps or GPS systems. And sometimes directions can be sketchy like take a left at the cattle guard. To get the job done, VZ Environmental relies on a eet of about 45 trucks primarily Dodge Ram 1-ton pickups and 42 trailers of various sizes, most
16 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - APRIL 2014

Starting a new business from scratch is an intimidating prospect perhaps even more so in the rough-and-tumble, boom-and-bust world of gas and oilfield services. But that didnt faze Carol Jones one bit in 2009 when she established VZ Environmental, a Fort Worth, Texas-based provider of fluid- and dust-containment products and services even though she had little business experience to speak of. My father was self-employed, and my mother took over the business after he passed away, says Jones in explaining why she remained largely undaunted in launching VZ Environmental (the initials stand for her maiden name, Van Zandt). While growing up, I lived and breathed the family business. I inherited an entrepreneurial, I-can-do-it mindset. I figure Im just as smart as the next guy down the street. Jones believes much of the companys success stems from a keep-it-simple philosophy that informs everything from the design of the companys containment units to business operations. To her, running a business shouldnt be all that complicated. In fact, she says she often draws on her experience at running a household to keep the business humming. You need to be creative and use knowledge from your other skills and specialties and apply them as opportunities present themselves, she explains. For example, our containment units all look pretty much the same when theyre folded and strapped up, and we have about 2,000 units in all. So to make it easier to find the ones we need, theyre color-coded according to size. Thats something I learned from organizing childrens things. And in terms of general business practices, I pay bills on time and keep expenses down principles I learned from managing household finances. Early on, Jones says she kept expenses down by sharing a service yard and labor with another startup oilfield-services company. She also gives a lot of credit for her success to Mark Matson, a friend and mentor. As the owner of ACF Tarp and Awning in Fort Worth and an oilindustry veteran, Matson helped her design and develop the companys containment units. Because of Marks oil and gas background, he was familiar with the requirements specific to the industry, Jones explains. He also had firsthand experience with the particular equipment for which we were designing containments, so he understood the unique demands placed upon the equipment. And finally, he knows the craft of tarp construction. When you put it all together, hes been invaluable to the success of this company.

Mark Matson of them made by Big Tex Trailers. To clean containment units, the company also owns 35 trailer-mounted, high-pressure, hot-water jetters made by Alkota Cleaning Systems Inc.; they generate ow of 4 gpm at 3,500 psi and feature two 500-gallon water tanks and a 230,000 Btu burner. The company does not handle disposal of wastewater; typically, crews hose it into a sump and a disposal company pumps the water out and hauls it to a regulated disposal site, Matson explains. Looking forward, Jones is optimistic about the companys future. She expects growth to come from increasing the companys customer base in regions it already serves more info (primarily the Barnett, Eagle Ford, Alkota Cleaning Systems Inc. 800/255-6823 Haynesville and Permian shale plays), www.alkota.com as well as expanding geographically Big Tex Trailers into northern markets. 903/575-0300 We could easily double our sales www.bigtextrailers.com in 2014. Flat-top vacuum tanks give Marcellus contractors portable restroom service vehicles added exibility

PRODUCTIVITY SQUARED
Bishops Fulltime Portables, Ulster, Pa.
VEHICLES: Six vacuum trucks made by Crescent Tank Manufacturing FUNCTION: Service and transport of portable restrooms located at natural gas drilling sites in the Marcellus Shale play in Pennsylvania FEATURES: Rectangular-shaped tanks that provide a at surface for transporting six to eight portable restrooms; Masport pumps COST: About $70,000 each

hen things got crazy busy at natural gas drilling pads in the Marcellus Shale play, Steve Bishop the owner of Bishops Fulltime Portables in Ulster, Pa. started looking for a versatile vacuum truck that would provide more utility for servicing/transporting portable restrooms than the atbed trucks with slide-in tanks hed been using. The answer: Vacuum trucks made by Crescent Tank Manufacturing. The trucks feature unique, rectangular-shaped vacuum tanks that serve as a truck bed, allowing Bishop to carry up to six portable restrooms at a time (four atop the tanks and two on a lift gate). Most portable restroom service trucks can only carry two restrooms at a time, usually on the tailgate. The slide-in units [with 300-gallon waste/150-gallon freshwater tanks] on atbeds worked ne until we got real busy, Bishop recalls. I didnt know what I was getting into with 300-gallon waste tanks, we started to reach capacity pretty quickly and I found we were making two or three trips a day back and forth to locations. Today, Bishops owns seven restroom service trucks: a 2006 International 4200, a 2006 GMC 5500, a 2006 Chevrolet 6500, a 2009 Isuzu NRR and three 2011 Ford F-550s. Theyre equipped with steel Crescent vacuum tanks

that range in size from 650 to 850 gallons for waste and 350 to 500 gallons for freshwater, as well as pumps made by Masport Inc. The trucks biggest advantage is their ability to carry more than just two restrooms. The restrooms stand upright and stay that way, thanks to the trucks low center of gravity, Bishop notes. A lot of fracking sites have anywhere from eight to 12 restrooms at one location, he explains. If a customer wants to pull, say, three units off

a location, I can put them on the deck, strap them down and continue on my route. And if someone calls along the way and needs a couple restrooms at a different location which happens more often than you might think I can deliver those three on the truck, as long as theyre clean enough to reset. Without the Crescent trucks, Id have to send a separate truck and trailer from our yard to deliver more restrooms. So the larger hauling capacity saves us an extra trip. Cost-wise, it adds up. If youre always sending someone to a drilling site where you just had a driver, its a pretty substantial expense in the long run, with the high cost of fuel and labor. Moreover, in the fast-moving world of gas fracking, providing fast, efcient service can differentiate Bishops from other contractors who lack the extra carrying capacity. Sure, it sets the customer-service bar

high when you consistently deliver same-day service to vendors again and again. But with the Crescent trucks, Bishop is condent he can deliver the goods. In fact, two of the trucks the International and the GMC can hold up to eight restrooms, providing even more exibility. Moreover, the trucks feature lift gates, so theyre easier for drivers to load and reduce the risk of injury. In addition, the trucks are easier to maneuver around drilling sites than a truck and trailer, which Bishop would have to use if he didnt have the extra carrying capacity provided by the Crescent trucks. In conjunction with the restroom business, Bishop also operates a hardware store that rents equipment and tools, and a mini-mart gas station. As such, the at-top tanks also allow him to make deliveries for hardwarestore customers, adding to their utility. We can carry anything on pallets its essentially a atbed truck, he says. One thing is certain: Bishop wont buy any other kind of vacuum truck. After I got the rst one and saw how versatile it was, and found all the different things it allows us to do, I just kept buying them, he says. For the amount of restrooms we were moving easily 30 units a day between all six drivers at the peak of activity I just couldnt imagine doing it with a truck and a trailer. It was like a giant chess match and we couldnt do that amount of shufing without these trucks. GOMC

On the Money

IN SICKNESS AND HEALTH

Wellness programs are easy to set up, cheap to run and can save you money in the long run
By Erik Gunn

the ofce help arent always losing to people in the eld whose work has them moving around all day.) 4. Screenings and shots Once again, turn to local health providers. Host a health screening afternoon with nurses or other professionals who will come in, take employees blood pressure and offer other simple assessments. Even some employees with health insurance probably havent made a habit of getting an annual physical from their doctor. This could help spur them into doing so. Ask your local Visiting Nurses Association (http://vnaa.org) about providing annual u shots. Some employers choose to partially or fully subsidize the cost to encourage participation; the expense might be worth it to prevent just a few absences of three, four or even more days in the heavy u months. 5. Kicking butts Local chapters of the American Lung Association (www.lung.org) or the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) can set up a program to help smokers in your workforce kick the habit. 6. Paring off the pounds Weight Watchers and other weightloss programs often set up work site-based programs, meeting after work or during breaks. Some might discount fees in return for the chance to enroll a group of people at once. Some employers choose to subsidize enrollment, but nothing says you have to. 7. Room to move Workplace tness centers are becoming popular with some employers. They dont have to be big or sport Olympicsized swimming pools or any pool at all. They dont even have to have expensive weight machines. It may be enough to put a walking trail on the property and encourage employees to use it during the lunch break. Even a sidewalk around the perimeter of the building can sufce. Its good to get out in the middle of the day, says Stich, a regular user of the walking trails that her own employer has put up at its headquarters. If you want to do more, consider

1. Healthy snacks It can be as simple as making sure that in the vending machines there are healthier choices available, says Stich. Cut back on the sodas and add bottled water. Replace some of the candy bars There are some easy, less complicated things a small with lower-fat or sugar-free varieties.

ealth benets to cover your employees when theyre sick are a necessary expense. But have you ever thought of doing more encouraging them to make healthier choices? A workplace wellness program is no substitute for a health plan, but over time, it could help you reduce your benet costs. And it pays off in other ways, too. Employers who offer wellness programs report reduced sick time, heightened productivity, and even a boost in morale

There are some easy, less complicated things a small employer can do, things that can make a difference, she says. You can start small and build from there. EIGHT IDEAS So where do you start?

and teamwork, says Julie Stich, research director for the International Foundation of Employee Benet Plans. The Wisconsinbased organization conducts research and advises employers on benet trends wwand practices. In a 2012 survey of more than 500 International Foundation members, 70 percent reported some kind of wellness program, Stich says. Theyre especially common at big companies, which often hire outside vendors to provide them. Health insurers sometimes offer wellness programs to the companies they serve, too either as part of the benets package or as an add-on. But wellness programs arent just for large employers, Stich says. They dont have to be complex or costly and you dont even have to hire an outside consultant to put one together.

2. Lunch and learn Your local health clinic or hospital probably has a speakers program that can send staff experts out to talk to the public: the hospital dietitian on healthy eating, an internist on preventing colds, or a physical therapist on preventing exercise injuries. Schedule them during the lunch break and encourage employees to attend. If you ask several different organizations, you can probably get enough topics and speakers for a monthly event. 3. Encourage exercise You can buy everybody who works for you a pedometer so they can track how many steps they take every day, says Stich. Just the awareness will motivate some people to get up and move more. If you wish, turn it into a low-key contest, awarding an inexpensive gift card to the person with the highest pedometer reading every quarter. (You might want to create categories of competitors, so people whose jobs keep them at their desks

offering classes in everything from aerobics to yoga. Look for qualied teachers at the local YMCA or other tness organizations. Or see if a local tness center will discount monthly fees for your employees. If your cash ow permits, you might offer to subsidize the fee as an employee benet. 8. Kick it up a notch A little competition, like the pedometer contest, can stimulate interest. If you want to expand on that, consider all kinds of friendly health and tness challenges for participating employees. Award points for reporting healthier eating habits, attending those monthly health talks or taking part in an exercise program, for example. Winners can get simple prizes, or even a slight discount on the employee portion of the health insurance plan premium. There is almost no limit to the sorts of wellness programs you can offer. Purchase some tness DVDs for employees to borrow and watch at home. Have a healthy recipe taste-off during lunch, or pick a special day when you ask everyone to bring a salad to pass. Try an offbeat tness initiative: Last summer, says Stich, the benets foundation had an employee bocce league. The Italian lawn bowling game was infectious even people who didnt join a team kept track of the standings. Creating a team of interested employees to organize and run the wellness program can spark interest. The more involvement you get from the people who are participating, the more you can build participation, Stich says. Remember, though, that not everyone participates. And theres nothing wrong with that. There is one group you do want to take part you and your top management. If employees take seriously your encouragement to use the tness center but never see the supervisor there, the message gets mixed then, Stich says. The more buy-in you get from your leadership, the more participation from employees there will be. THE PAYOFF It isnt easy to measure the prot from wellness programs and you wont see it overnight. You cant start a program in November and know by December how much money youve saved, says Stich. Theres usually about a three- to ve-year time frame before you can measure the cost impact. Fewer than one employer in ve that the foundation surveyed tried to measure their return from wellness initiatives. But in a follow-up survey, she says, those who drilled down to that level reported saving two to three dollars on average for every dollar they spent on wellness. Savings, she adds, isnt just measured in the dollars your health benet plan pays out. If youve got a healthier workforce, theyll be coming to work, Stich says. Theyll need less time off because theyre sick.

And if theyre feeling good, theyll be more productive for you. Thats part of it too. Help your people live healthier lives, and your bottom line will be healthier, too. GOMC

kids with them. They wouldnt have done that if they had to park in an outdoor RV park, Bonneville says. A large commons building is available to all tenants for socializing. Within the commons building there is a Laundromat, postal service, and gathering room with couches, recliners, large at screen TV, pool tables, video gaming machines, vending machines, exercise equipment and restrooms. The children use the commons building year-round to escape the connes of their RVs, Bonneville says. The children also gather inside the building every morning during the school year as they wait for the school bus. The park is very family friendly. Plans are in the works to add a playground in the spring. Bonneville says the park didnt spring up overnight. There was a signicant amount of time and expense with the design of the buildings to conform to the strict codes of the North Dakota Department of Health. The park is fully approved by the health department. To our knowledge, the ND Indoor RV Park currently is the only RV park of its kind in any state, Bonneville says. Business has been steady between both winter and summer months, with just as many people trying to escape the heat and humidity as there are trying to stay out of the snow and cold. One would think that there would be a higher demand during the winter months; however, our experience has been that there is a strong demand year-round, Bonneville says. Our tenants are warm in the winter and comfortable in the summer living inside our buildings. No more frozen water or sewer pipes, no RV skirting, no re threat from heaters under their RVs parked outdoors, no snow shoveling and no propane tanks to ll those are some of the advantages. The park also does background checks on tenants and the buildings provide extra security. Currently their only location is in Watford City, but Bonneville says the partners have given consideration to building additional indoor RV parks in the Bakken and will decide at some point in the future where to go. For more information on the park, go to www.ndindoorrvpark.com. GOMC

HOME SWEET HOME

Indoor RV park offers oileld workers a comfortable escape from the elements
By Cory Dellenbach

inding a place to live in the Bakken region of North Dakota can be tough. More and more oileld workers are now living out of RVs as they work in the oilelds. While there are outdoor RV parks in the region, the RVs can get a little toasty in the summer and quite cold in winter. But a group of local business partners is providing a solution for some lucky campers.

Each bay houses three RV pads with locked overhead doors and service doors for each pad. The buildings are insulated, heated and lit with halogen lighting. A total of 236 indoor pads are available. The Indoor RV Park allows our tenants to live in a comfortable and secure environment inside their RVs with shelter from the elements year-round, Bonneville says.

About one year ago the ND Indoor RV Park opened in Watford City, N.D. A relative of one of the partners joking thought it would be a good idea to park an RV inside a pole barn to escape the elements, says Louis Bonneville, managing partner for the park. Obviously that was not practical due to potential health and safety issues. But that joke got the ball rolling, and the business is now providing indoor RV parking and living in a climate-controlled environment. So many people thought we were crazy, Bonneville says. The park features 10 buildings that are sectioned into bays for re protection, carbon monoxide and smoke detection, along with air exchange ventilation for the safety and comfort of tenants.
28 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - APRIL 2014

The park also offers 70 outdoor RV pads to accommodate those who prefer to be outdoors. Outdoor tenants are given priority to move indoors when pads become available. The indoor spots cost $1,250 to $1,450 per month in the winter and $1,000 to $1,300 per month in the summer with all utilities included. Outdoors spots cost $900 per month with water, sewer and electricity included. The signicant housing shortage in the Bakken has afforded an opportunity to create a successful business model, Bonneville says. Many of our tenants have commented that they would move back home for the winter months if not for the comforts that we offer them. The RV park has also allowed many oileld workers to bring their spouses and

Drill Pipe Solutions

For drill pipe cleaning, water jet systems beat your usual method

You can get drill pipe back into service sooner and keep it working longer when you clean it with NLB high-pressure water jets. Our water jets (up to 40,000 psi) remove scale and hardened mud more thoroughly than rattle-and-brush systems, making it easier to pass inspections. Water jets also ush out debris and drilling uids without a separate rinse operation. That means fewer plugged drill heads, less corrosion, and more work done between cleanings. For drill pipe that easily passes inspections and goes longer between cleanings, you cant beat water jets. Liquid and Dry Bulk Transport Equipment, Pipeline Installation, Maintenance and Inspection
By Craig Mandli RUGGED UNIT HELPS TRUCKING COMPANY HANDLE HARSH CONDITIONS
A typical day for Mapp Trucking in Hinton, Alberta, includes snow, ice and mud during 30- to 60-mile runs to make deliveries in the Alberta oilelds. The average January temperature is 12 degrees F, and the rolling grades of the Rocky Mountain foothills 300 miles northwest of Calgary offer a challenge. Mike Pinet of Mapp Trucking says the worst thing for a driver trying to stay on schedule is that rapidly changing weather and road conditions can require pulling chains on and off the average truck multiple times during the day.

Problem

The company wanted an oil tanker that could withstand the demanding conditions, provide superior uptime and offer reliable power and handling to take on the Canadian winter. After considering various options, Mapp talked with Bill Mitchell from First Truck Centre in Edmonton, and purchased a Freightliner 122SD 8x8 truck with a 20,000-pound front-wheel-drive axle and transfer case, installed by Tulsa Truck Manufacturing, matched to a 69,000-pound full-locking Tri-drive rear axle with Freightliner Airliner rear suspension.

Solution

According to Pinet, the addition of the front drive to the overall performance of the unit with its Detroit DD15TC engine is like switching from a standard pickup truck to a 4x4. Extreme climate thermal cab insulation adds to driver comfort and provides a quiet ride. The vehicle offers stability in poor weather conditions, and the efcient 560 hp engine delivers 1,850 ft-lbs of torque. Mapp has ordered a second unit. 503/745-8000; www.freightlinertrucks.com. GOMC

Chevron increasing spending in Marcellus Shale

By Cory Dellenbach
Chevron announced on Jan. 21 its plan to spend nearly $40 billion on drilling and fracking this year, according to a press release from the Californiabased global oil giant. Much of that budget is planned for the Marcellus Shale play in West Virginias Northern Panhandle. Overall, we have an attractive portfolio of investment opportunities which we will continue to fund in a disciplined fashion to grow value and shareholder distributions, Chairman and CEO John Watson says. Chevron, one of the largest publically owned oil companies in the world, earned $5 billion from June through September 2013. The company says about 90 percent of the 2014 spending program is slated for upstream crude oil and natural gas exploration and production projects. Chevron reports it is increasing Marcellus Shale production in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and Watson said much of this production is in the liquids-rich zone meaning the gas stream contains both dry methane and wet products such as ethane, propane and butane. Cunningham Energy merges with Pettey Oileld Services Cunningham Energy, an oil and gas exploration and production company based in Charleston, W.Va., announced Jan. 21 that it has merged with Pettey Oileld Services Inc. to form Cunningham Oileld Services. The company will offer a complete package of well service solutions for oil and gas production companies, including full vertical and horizontal contract drilling, completion drilling, service/swabbing rig work, cement services, plugging services, well location and right of way construction, pipeline construction and commercial trucking. Pettey Oileld Services has been operating successfully in the Appalachian Basin for decades and brings unparalleled experience and relationships to our newly formed services arm, says Ryan Cunningham, president of Cunningham Energy. Cunningham Oileld Services operates from two locations Charleston, W.Va., and Hamlin, W.Va. both serving the Appalachian Basin. Chief Oil & Gas increasing focus in Marcellus Shale Chief Oil & Gas is growing and will increase its focus in the Marcellus Shale region by opening a new eld ofce within the rst quarter of the year, according to company ofcials. The Chief Wyalusing Yard in Wyalusing, Pa., is part of the companys plan to take advantage of the natural gas resources in the shale, says Daria Fish, director of public affairs. The eld ofce consists of three 20- by 60-foot modular buildings that will run a variety of natural gas related operations. The ofce will house 12 employees, which will include eld employees, production and completions, a drilling consultant and well tenders. The operations control center will monitor wells throughout Chiefs operations, Fish says. If a problem happens at a well, the well can be shut off from the center. We doubled our acreage from 2012 to 2013, Fish says. This ofce allows us to be closer to our operations and thus will make it more efcient and less costly. GOMC

Building the Business

LEADING THE RIGHT WAY

There are many myths about being a good leader, and good leaders avoid all of them
By Erick Lauber

radley was failing, and failing badly. Not only did the members of his team avoid him in the shop and never stop by to say good morning, they had begun taping a target to his back every day and everyone had signed up for archery lessons. Bradleys leadership style just wasnt working. Unfortunately, Bradleys core problem was that he suffered from several leadership myths hed picked up from pop culture. Like many of us, he didnt have any formal training in leadership so his beliefs came

Todays American work environment demands creative problem solving, exible decision making and complex reasoning.
mostly from watching movies. Leadership to Bradley was square-jawed men taking on insurmountable odds, rallying the troops with award-winning speeches, and humbly waiting for passionate kisses from pretty co-stars. Bradley thought he was prepared to be a great leader because he had been practicing his motivational speeches in the mirror and could spew out all of the latest leadership buzzwords without spitting too much. But somehow it just wasnt working. What Bradley didnt realize was that his ailments were completely xable. They are pretty common today. Perhaps youve seen these leadership myths in your workplace: 1. The Myth of Omnipotence The myth of omnipotence is thinking you can tell anyone on the team to do
44 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - APRIL 2014

practically anything and theyre going to just hop to it with a grin and a nod. It might happen in the movies but we know in reality a brand-new leader doesnt automatically get enthusiastic cooperation. He or she more often gets quiet acceptance, or perhaps begrudging compliance. Building cooperation and energetic participation requires time and careful nurturing in the real world. You might have to listen to a coworker tell that unfunny story about their nephews brief stint with the Ice Capades. You might have to not get your way a few times in order to collaborate with your team. Real humans dont give blind obedience because of someones position on an organizational chart. And leaders cant alienate people, regardless of their feelings toward them. 2. The Myth of Omniscience This is the belief that being the leader means knowing everything about everything. It comes in two varieties. In some environments, it makes the brandnew leader micromanage and attempt to oversee the smallest detail. In others, it makes the leader think they have to know the answer to every question. Why else would they be the leader? Bradley had these two issues. He started looking over everyones shoulder. Bradley also never failed to give an answer even when he was clueless. His staff noticed. They even started reading questions from the back of a quantum physics textbook just to mess with him.

3. The Myth of Omni-adrenaline This is probably the most damaging myth in todays complex, skill-driven team environments. It is the belief that excellent execution from a team demands adrenaline surges, rousing speeches and lots of shouting. Every movie has such inspirational moments and Bradley tried to create them every day. Unfortunately, it didnt seem to work on his team. Bradleys attempts at motivating were actually hurting his teams performance, not helping. Shouting and adrenaline surges are only useful for invoking over-learned, mindless performance in the face of fear and actual physiological arousal. Military units and sports teams are perfect for this type of leadership. But adrenaline surges also narrow cognition and thinking. Todays American work environment demands creative problem solving, exible decision-making and complex reasoning. When was the last time you had to jump on a grenade or charge into an enemy bayonet line? A leader suffering from omni-adrenaline in the modern workplace looks clueless and simple-minded. Why is he shouting? Im trying to concentrate over here! Leadership myths are presented to us every day. Enclosed refueling stations provide service in remote locations
By Ed Wodalski
GO-Station fuel modules from SEI Industries are designed to receive and transfer fuel from bulk fuel storage systems as well as refuel light vehicles, heavy equipment, tanker trucks or lube trucks in remote locations. Built inside insulated 40-foot ISO containers, the fuel transfer modules feature stainless steel piping and valves. Spill protection and re suppression systems are built in. Rollup doors provide access to multiple dispensing units and retractable hose reels. Explosion-proof lighting is standard on the heated units. All components are built on modular skids that can be moved for service or replaced, if needed. The stand-alone GO-Station has a built-in ltration and metering system, says Robin Cnudde, regional sales manager for SEI. Its designed to work in very austere, harsh, arctic environments and requires a minimal amount of maintenance and service. The 600-volt stations can transfer gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, as well as lubricating oil and arctic diesel fuel. It can dispense 20 gpm for

light vehicles and 100 to 200 gpm for heavy equipment, Cnudde says. For bulk off-loading it can handle a range of 400 to 500 gpm. The fully enclosed pumping system enables workers to refuel vehicles in any type of weather, from tropical heat to frigid cold. Applications include refueling operations at remote mine and drilling sites. The custom-built stations can simultaneously service heavy equipment and one light vehicle. 866/570-3473; www.sei-ind.com.

Based in Alvin, Texas, K-3BMI reects a merger of two separate businesses: K-3 Services, a diversied oileld services company focusing on uid transport; and BMI, a municipal biosolids management contractor. With more than 120 trucks, Ercums says K-3BMIs prime focus is on the transportation of uids to and from drilling and completion sites in the Eagle Ford Shale in south-central Texas to the Haynesville Shale in northeast Texas/northwest Louisiana. His trucks are also dispatched on longer trips, hauling specialty drilling uids and chemicals to gas and oilelds from Pennsylvania and North Dakota to Colorado and California. SWITCHING TO ALUMINUM One of the most distinctive characteristics of the K-3BMI eet is the reliance on 166-barrel aluminum vacuum tank trailers in addition to the 130-barrel carbon steel vacuum transports that have long been the standard in the oil and gas elds. Ercums became interested in using larger, lighter aluminum tanks soon after he moved into oileld services. Back in 1986, everybody was using carbon steel 130-barrel trailers and I K-3BMI has its fabricators mount Gardner Denver Demag Wittig RFL 100 pumps with hydraulic drives thought we could be more competitive with aluminum. behind the landing gear on its vacuum trailers to help shield them from road hazards. But he loaded 8,400 and it cracked. That using air-ride suspensions to better protect the trailers against bumpy oileld calamity didnt deter the young Ercums; it just sent him down a different road. Once trucks and trailers are delivered, K-3BMI continues to ne-tune before putting them into service. Mechanics mount Gardner Denver Demag Wittig RFL 100 pumps behind the landing gear of the vacuum trailers, a spot where they are more protected from road dirt and debris. Its an expensive pump, but its bullet-proof, Ercums says. K-3BMI opts for hydraulic drives on the pumps because they run cleaner and have less downtime compared to pumps running off of drive shafts.

K-3s employees assemble the hydraulic systems in-house based on a design perfected over the years. To help protect the pumps and cabs, fabricators modify quarter fenders to mount over the trucks drive tires. Before new equipment is put on the road, drivers are trained on proper operation. Because of the emissions on the new trucks, it is extremely important that the drivers are trained on the trucks systems, Ercums says. I would rather x a truck in our shop than send someone out to x one at the side of the road in the middle of the night, Ercums explains. Many were supervisors rst at other locations, but most of them jumped at the opportunity if I asked them to manage a new location. One benet of developing his managers, Ercums says, is their willingness to work as a team. He brings them together for quarterly meetings where they can discuss common issues and challenges, but he says they are also encouraged to maintain that teamwork when they go back to their individual ofces. The networking makes it possible for the company to efciently allocate resources both equipment and people where

Safety First

SO MUCH AT STAKE
Establishing and maintaining an effective and compliant safety program can yield extraordinary ROI

identify specic operational challenges and potential safety hazards for the current job, but it can help to resolve structural issues that may present an issue in future work. Empower your team When on the job site, every single employee should have the authority to call for an immediate All Stop. Your team should understand that such an event warrants an immediate work stoppage and a subsequent safety review to ensure that the incident is resolved before work recommences. Keep training on track A strict training regimen is the backbone of any safety program. Consistency and repetition are key to breaking down what can sometimes be a stubborn resistance to change the behavioral and professional inertia that can hinder compliance efforts replacing it with best practices and procedures that should become second nature. Know where you are vulnerable Because so many job site accidents involve slips and falls, implementing strict fall protections is an effective way to reduce or eliminate your teams exposure to many of the most common serious accidents. Personal fall-arrest systems and full-body harnesses should be mandatory for any employee operating more than 6 feet off of the ground, and safety nets and other emergency fail-safe measures are highly recommended. From the boardroom to the job site, oil and gas decision-makers on all levels need to understand the extraordinary ROI that can come from what amounts to a fairly modest investment in training and education. By establishing an efcient and effective safety program, you will be optimizing compliance and protecting both your employees and your business. GOMC

il and gas exploration and extraction professionals understand that safety rst is not a clich: It is a mandate. In an industry where sound policies, strict safety protocols and responsive and responsible professional behavior can literally mean the difference between life and death, building and maintaining a strong and sustainable safety program is a top-line priority for every company. That priority is especially urgent today, as OSHA continues to introduce new regulations, and to enforce increasingly complex and demanding safety standards through more frequent compliance checks and unannounced job site visits. In such a highly regulated

Understand the value of teamwork If safety truly is your number one priority, treat it that way by hiring a fulltime safety and compliance team. Even a single dedicated full-time compliance ofcer (whose only job is to ensure consistent application of safety principles and workplace standards) can be a difference-maker, and deploying safety supervisors into the eld can enhance adoption and accountability. Talk the talk Clear and consistent communication is critically important. One of the most common mistakes many operations make is conveying information once and

Noncompliance, or even lax adherence, can result in nes, downtime and major accidents, all of which can have catastrophic consequences not to mention a potentially signicant and damaging impact on a companys bottom line and reputation. With so much at stake, the need to maintain an effective safety program is more urgent than ever. While every operation is different, the following tips, policies and universal best practices will go a long way toward promoting safe operations and building and maintaining a strong safety program:

assuming thats enough. Regular and repetitive multichannel communication delivered through documents, personal interactions and companywide bulletins is essential to ensuring that employees understand and absorb critical safety and compliance information. Meet up Consider going beyond the occasional review session or pre-deployment brieng. The most safety-conscious operators make a point of holding safety meetings not only before a job, but also on the job and they follow up with safety reviews after the work is completed.
