EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In this report, we have in fact talked on the effects of Private channels on PTV in certain areas of concern. Our main focus is to highlight the present position of PTV in electronic media in the swarm of privatizations. We proceeded by discussing three main departments of evaluation that are News, Culture and Entertainment .Our national channel earned a lot of fame when it started its telecast initially, but after the evolution of private channels it got affected a great deal. Viewership decreased to an alarming level. Yet the thing to be valued, the positives of PTV has been elaborated among which the Cultural promotion is the most important. Our hypothesis supporting this project is that PTV has lagged behind a great deal among other private channels, although it was the first to be launched country wide. The main reasons, controversies, and wrong policies leading to its downfall have been elaborated in this report. Above all certain recommendations regarding the improvement of the standard of PTV have been discussed with the help of a Public Survey. There was a balance of leading and lagging perspective of PTV in comparison with private channels thus we concluded that PTV still holds a valid position in electronic media

COMPANY DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION:
The Pakistan TV came into being with the Pakistan Television Corporation. It is the national broadcaster of Pakistan. The national television is governed by the board of directors duly appointed by the Pakistan Government. The Corporation is headed by Managing Director, who is nominated by the Pakistan government after the consent of the Board of Directors. He is also the Administrative and the Executive Head of the Pakistan Television Corporation. It is the head who steers the corporation and its 6000 employees. The Pakistan TV focuses on the news and latest happenings coupled with other programmes

HISTORY:
Pakistan Television Corporation Limited (PTV) is a public limited company. All its shares are held by Government of Pakistan. The decision to establish a general purpose television service with the participation of private capital and under the general supervision of the Government of Pakistan (GOP) was taken in October 1963. Subsequently the GOP signed an agreement with Nippon Electronic Company of Japan, allowing it to operate two pilot stations in Pakistan. The first of these stations went on air in Lahore on 26 November 1964. On the completion of the experimental phase, a private limited company, called Television Promoters Limited was set up in 1965 which was converted into a public limited company in 1967. Television centers were established in Karachi and Rawalpindi/Islamabad in 1967 and in Peshawar and Quetta in 1974. PTV satellite TRANSMITION is round the clock. The Karachi Center commenced its transmission on November 2, 1967 and was the first fullfledged station housed in its own building fully and properly equipped with better technical extensive equipment for production by electronic methods it has four main color studios, including one designed and equipped for News. The professional quality of its varied programmed fare, be it music or drama has been of a top standard. The PTV-Karachi Center along with four Re-broadcast Stations at Thana Bola Khan, Shikarpur, Noorpur and Thando Allahyar, connected to other RBSs in the country through Microwave link cover about 90% of the population. With the opening of PTV World, Pakistani programmes are now being viewed in other parts of the world via satellite.PTV Lahore, pilot center started in collaboration with N.H.K. Company in a very small studio known as Studio 'C' (with three Cameras, one Tape recorder, one 35mm Telecine, one 16mmTelecine and one Opaque Projector.) Studio 'C' was situated inside the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, Lahore area, was started on 26-"-1964 six days in a week (Monday off-day) in black & white with a very limited staff. At that time, all Studio programmes were telecast, LIVE" as no VTR Recording machines were available, which

Were made available in the year 1968.A Pilot TV Center was formally inaugurated on December 5, 1974 at 2-Fort Road, Peshawar. It was Black & White Production/Transmitting Center consisting of Recording Studio and a Booth for News/Announcement. On February 18, 1982 Main Color TV Center was inaugurated at 58Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azainwith Two Production Studios,, One Announcement / News Studio, an Outdoor Broadcast Van &07 Nos. of portable outdoor recording units for News/Current Affairs and Programmes.PTV Quetta was established during 1974 in the abandoned Masonic Lodge, Quetta Cantt and was

formally inaugurated on 26th November 1974 (26th November, on the 10th openinganniversar y of PTV in Pakistan, as the first PTV Center was established in Lahore on 26th November, 1964 and later on too, most of the Centers were established on 26th November).The main project of the Academy was approved in 1981 with an estimated cost of Rs.33.9million from the Government, whereas PTV had to contribute Rs. 9.7 million in the form of old/used equipment. Engineering Training Cell was established in 1978 to train PTV Engineers. A similar cell was established for Production Training in 1984. Both these divisions had been working in rented buildings before moving to Academys building in 1988

PTV Today:
Currently, PTV can be received via satellite in South Asia, East Asia and in the Middle East. Selected programming can be seen on Prime TV (with a partnership) in the United Kingdom and Europe Today, PTV is split up into the original channel feed: PTV Home - 24-hour entertainment channel, the transmission is broadcast across Pakistan on terrestrial network and worldwide through satellite. It's Programming also include live telecast of Pakistan's cricket matches. PTV News - 24-hour news channel which can be viewed in many parts of the globe. PTV National - An emphasis on broadcasting programmes in different languages to represent the whole of Pakistan. AJK TV - For the residents of Azad Kashmir. PTV Bolan - [Balochi, Pashto and Brahvi languages] languages channel. PTV Global - Offered exclusively for the United States on Dish Network, and recently launched in Europe.

Operational Areas:
In the overall structural set up, the corporation consists of the following units:(a) A headquarters office at Islamabad. (b) A central sales office at Karachi. At present Pakistan Television has been working with six television stations which are located in 1. Lahore 2. Islamabad

This network of Pakistan Television covers about 87% of population, which is about 120 million, and 37.5% of area inside Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. BCG Matrix:

BCG is a strategy tool that guides resource allocation decision on the basis of market share and growth rate. BCG divides organizations into four different categories. These are as flows: Cash Cows: which have high market share but low opportunity for growth? Stars: which have high market share and high opportunity for growth? Question marks: which have high opportunity for growth and low market share?

DOGS: which have low market share and low opportunity for growth? On the basis of these assumptions, PTV has been classified as Cash cows because it has a high market share and low business growth.

To give entertainment to people of Pakistan and out side the country by arranging different movies, plays and sports programmes. 2.To keep its viewers in touch with changing circumstances of world and give them current affairs information like news. 3. To increase the literacy rate by producing educational programmes. 4. As Pakistan is an Islamic Republic, therefore to convey the message of Islam and teachings to people of all religions with the help of religious programmes. 5. Planning:
Operational Plans:
PTV has a network, which handles all the business units in each department. Its like an Octopus, the head is the Network and each tentacle is a business unit. They evaluate the goals set by the management as to how close they are to achieving their objectives, and how much they have achieved. If PTV has not achieved its required goals they take feedback and change their operational plans accordingly. The BOD or Top management is responsible for such type of decisions

Short Term Goal:


The short term goal of PTV is to present new entertainment programs for people. According to Manager more attractive entertainment creates more revenues.

Intermediate goal:
The intermediate goal of the PTV is to increase the no of channels and they told us we are launching a English news channel very soon.

Long Term Goal:


When asked about the long-term goal they told that it is highly confidential and only known to the Upper level management, e.g. C.E.O.

CONTROLLING
Control Process:
HRM and Employee Control Process:
PTV has more polices than any other company and these policies are well communicated to the employees. All rules regulations, policies and procedures are mentioned in the employee handbook, which is kept highly confidential from the non-employees. PTV has a strong control on the policies and employee code of conduct and is very strict about them. PTV does not compromise on their polices and implement them strictly. PTV uses the 360 degrees appraisal in which subordinates evaluate their seniors. Each individual (subordinate) evaluates their bosss behavior, leadership; attitudes etc. and they are free to give any opinion or complaint against them. The committee then begins inquiries and strictly, Follows Company polices respectively. Subordinates comments are very essential for the promotions of their seniors. Department-to-Department evaluation is also done in PTV in which one department evaluates the performance of another department.

LEADING
The top management Lead the organization and make a final decisions. PTV encourages employees to be a part of the decision making. --Develops plans to help employees evaluate their own performance --Allows employees to establish goals. --Encourages employees to grow on the job and be promoted --Recognizes and encourages achievement.

Social Responsibility of PTV


Role of PTV:
PTV is trying its best to promote Pakistani Culture but all in vain. Now People demand for Glamour and Style instead of simplicity. PTV has become far away from People's demands because now our People are attracted towards glamorization. In PTV shows, there is some respect and distances maintained as well as in keeping one self covered but these private channels are Responsible for spreading of western culture. But now its common for them to huge hold hands and jump into each other laps. That is the only reason why PTV has begun to put bits of westernization in order to compete with the private channels which have been proved by our survey. A lot of PTV plays and documentaries have been provided to foreign countries on gratis basis for the projection of Pakistan and its people which have been liked by them and later on they have purchased several selected programmed. From the above information, we can say that PTV plays a vital and positive role in the society as compare to the private channels.

Internal Culture:
There is a code of conduct that all employees have to follow strictly. For example: 1) They have a No-Smoking environment however; they have specified a zone for smoking only. 2) Every employee has to display the PTV Identity Badge. 3) All employees should conduct the display of Discipline strictly because of too much interaction with the other departments. 4) There is no formal dress code except for certain levels such as, the Heads of the Departments.

5) Eatables are not allowed everywhere in the office except in the Caf. 6) Employees mush reach and leave the office in time at the 10-7 office timings

Problems:
Main problems of PTV in management are as under:

Political interference:
In PTV major problem is that there is a high political interference in the appointment and selection of employees. Executives are the people who can improve or fail any business. These executives select their favorite person for new vacancies weather they have technical knowledge about job or not. So this affects the overall efficiency and business of organization.

Over Staffing:
After scanning the organization environment it is revealed that over staffing is a major problem being faced by PTV. Where only one person is required, a number of employees have been employed to perform the same task. This has an adverse affect upon budget and results in the raise of expenses.

Poor Controlling system:


As there is political influence over the organization that directly affects the control system of PTV. Most of the hiring is done by political influence thats why unskilled people are hired which are unable to control the performance of organization.

Ethical Issues:
Due to poor control system certain unethical issues have been seen is the organization like favoritism, corruption, bribery and redtpism arise. Property of PTV is used for personal use by the employees. Promotion is awarded on the basis of favoritism so in this way they are discouraging the skilled and hard working employees. The upper management is directly

Involved in corruption and lower level management is involved in bribery which has defamed PTV.

Lack of Maintenance:
There is no proper check and balance system for the maintenance of equipments.

Financial Crisis:
As PTV is a government organization, and our government is facing financial crisis due to which availability of funds to PTV is not sufficient. We know that finance is a back bone of any organization. As PTV is facing financial crisis and it is running out of budget thats why PTV cannot show its performance in a better way

CONCLUSION
After our research work, we have come to certain conclusions:PTV has not been completely eliminated out of the picture by the private channels. Private channels holds a clear lead in the news casting department and PTV can do-nothing to even get close to it until it gets freedom of coverage. PTV is the only channel upholding the culture of Pakistan and its people, while Private channels are busy modifying it by the name of modernization. PTV is still in the running, providing entertainment to its viewers but has deviated from the past glory by introducing glamorization. With the liberation of media, the viewership of PTV has been decreased. But still it holds a valid position in electronic media.
