Assessment of Needs: Introduction: For many young adults, college is the first time that they are living

on their own. This being said, there are a lot of obstacles that these students need to overcome. In fall of 2011 there were approximately 19.7 million students enrolled in a university in the United States (Statistical Abstract of the United States). In 2009 there were roughly 2,800 four-year year universities in the United States (Higher Education-Institutions and Enrollment). Many of these students have a difficult time making the transition especially when it comes to their diets, which is where the phrase freshman fifteen comes in. Some do not know how to, or do not think they have the time to cook healthy meals. The majority of these young adults do not worry about getting all of the necessary nutrients that they were so accustom to having placed in front of them when they were living at home. Going along with not eating right, college students are also less active than in previous years which also declines the overall health of these people. Not only are nutrition and fitness issues, but so is a lack of sleep. Whether they had a late night study session, or they were just up late partying the majority of college-aged students are not getting the adequate amount of sleep. There are more obvious health issues that college students are facing like binge drinking for example, but the fact of the matter is binge drinking and drug use are the issues that make tabloids. Many people seem to overlook the fact that with lack of sleep and poor nutrition these young adults are much more likely to have health-related issues than

they did when they were in their parent or guardians care. Now that the needs of this population have been determined, the issue of reaching this population still remains. Plan for the Methods: With such a large number of students and universities dispersing a survey to the entire population would prove to be both cost and time inefficient. To eliminate this issue while still getting an accurate estimate I am using a sample by randomly selecting two of the universities from each of the fifty states and offering the survey electronically. I will formally contact the president of each of these universities and ask him/her to spread the word on the survey, and encourage students to participate. I figured a survey was the best way to reach my population since I do not have neither the time nor means to travel to all fifty states and 100 universities to use any of the face-to-face methods. My survey has to cover not only the nutritional side of things, but also the sleeping habits of these students. The majority of universities use blackboard or a similar website, so I will ask that it will be placed on the home page under the student life tab or something similar to this. Although some people choose to ignore these surveys I will be sure to encourage promoting this survey by educating students ahead of time on the issues that college students have. A lot of universities try to encourage their students to get the recommended hours of sleep and encourage them to eat right, but with all of the homework and unhealthy cafeteria food they are not taking the necessary steps to help to fix these health issues. The United States has been focusing on health and fitness a

lot over the past few years due to the increase in obesity in our nation. With so much awareness already all these college students need is a little push in the right direction.
