44 APRI L 11, 2014 CALENDAR
Theres almost always a
trade-o in choosing LTR
vs. hook-up sex
DEAR MICHAEL,
I was intrigued by your Valentines Day
column featuring the long-term couple
who arent having sex anymore. Im in
a similar boat with my husband of 12
years, where we dont have much sex
and dont do much when we do have sex
(porn movies and mutual masturbation).
To be honest, I hook up with other guys
from time to time at the gym and Im
pretty sure Mark does too. Its far hotter
and more exciting than the same old
same old.
You suggest that couples should accept
that sex with the same person loses some
of its steaminess as time goes by and that
we should focus on enjoying the other
aspects of sex, like emotional connection
and closeness.
My problem with this is when I dont
hook up, Im jealous of the hotter sex that
I hear my single (and some partnered)
friends are having. There are so many
gorgeous guys out there and life is short.
I feel like Im getting old and missing
out if Im not taking advantage of all the
pleasure that I could enjoy. You only live
once. Its hard to just enjoy the warmth and
coziness of ho-hum sex in my marriage
when I could be out there screwing my
brains out with some amazing guy, like I
constantly hear my friends are doing. And
yet, I love Mark and want to stay with him.
I feel like Im going crazy over this and
sometimes Im really bummed about
not getting the good stu that others
are enjoying.
Michael replies:
You are facing a few tough, inter-
related dilemmas.
First, the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
factor: Many gay men place a heavy
emphasis on sex (think Grindr and
similar apps). Theres nothing wrong with
pursuing or enjoying sex, but when lots
of sex/multiple partners is the standard
of success in your circle and you believe
youre not meeting that standard, its
easy to feel like youre missing out. Even
a guy who isnt interested in pursuing
high-volume sex may feel like a loser for
following his own path.
Second, our entire culture glories
youth and disparages aging and gay
men are not immune to this outlook.
The white-hot sex of a new connection
is associated with youth, just as the
inevitable decrease of this sort of sex
in an ongoing relationship is associated
with aging. Most of us dont like the
idea of getting older and letting go of
youthful abilities and pleasures, so
we glorify and chase intense sex while
looking down on the less scorching sex
that were more likely to have with a
long-term mate. Who wants to give up
on the prospect of hot sex?
Third, if you make the choice to be in
a monogamous relationship, you are
denitely going to miss out on possibly
steamy sex with other guys. But if you
are in a relationship and have outside
sex, jealousy may sour your marriage,
one of you may leave for a seemingly
hotter prospect, the time and attention
you spend on hookups may erode your
connection with your spouse and the
secrecy, if you are not open about what
you are doing, may create distance. Also
the quality and quantity of sex at home
may decline as you put in less eort.
The truth is, aging is inevitable and we
cant have everything. What we can do is
decide whats most important to us and
go for it.
Toward this end, gure out whether
you want to keep looking for outside
encounters so that you dont miss out
or whether you want to really make the
best of the relationship you are in. I dont
think you can do both. Should you choose
the latter, heres a question: If youre so
bored sexually, why are you and Mark
settling for merely jerking o together to
porn? Couldnt you nd something more
exciting to do together?
People have all kinds of reasons why
they stop having good sex with their
partners. The one that I hear most often
in my practice is, It shouldnt take work.
Something must be wrong if we dont
spontaneously want to have sex. But the
truth is, nothing is wrong. Its inevitable
that the excitement of newness fades,
but it is not inevitable that you have to
stop having sex when it does. Nor does
long-term sex have to be dull, unless you
believe that it does and put no eort into
making it worth having.
If you and Mark stay together and
stay bored, please nd a skilled couples
therapist to help you nd a way to have
more cozy, intimate, connected sex that is
even occasionally hot! Good luck.

now Im working a lot on some lms for
Hollywood and putting together some
other tracks for another pop record but
were denitely at the middle point right
now. The best is yet to come.
BLADE: Its obvious, though, that you
put some care and thought into these
things. Fans can always tell when theyre
just slapped together by the label. Yours
clearly were not.
WAINWRIGHT: Well, I have a lot of
supportive and very intellectual people
who helped me do that along the way.
Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys was
inuential and instrumental I should say
in putting together the list of songs for
Vibrate. And, you know, I had such a
great band for the Artists Den recording.
You know, youve got to have good people
around you.
BLADE: What was it like singing with Joni
Mitchell at her birthday tribute last year?
WAINWRIGHT: Oh, that was wild.
Really amazing. I cant say that I was the
biggest Joni Mitchell fan growing up. Not
so much because I didnt like her music
but my mother was very jealous of Joni
Mitchell. My mother was a very well
known Canadian songwriter as well, so
we werent allowed to listen to much Joni
Mitchell in the house. So I wasnt really
that familiar. So it was really an amazing
education and kind of a baptism by re
and the last lesson was singing with her
on stage. It was a lot of fun.
BLADE: Did you get to interact much
with her aside from what we saw on stage?
WAINWRIGHT: Oh yeah, a lot. We
hung out a lot. I went to her house a
few times because my husband (Jorn
Weisbrodt) runs the festival, we had to
really work with her on everything so we
spent a lot of time together, Joni and I. It
was a great honor.
BLADE: In interviews, shes never been
one to mince words. Is that how she is
when the cameras not rolling too?
WAINWRIGHT: Oh yeah, theres no
lter there whatsoever. You know, shes
lived in her own universe for so many
years, theres no way to really encapsulate
and explain what she is. Shes kind of
transcended what it is to be real.
BLADE: With the operas, which came
rst the concepts or the commissions?
WAINWRIGHT: Well, Ive always
wanted to write operas, that desire
was always there, but you really cannot
write an opera in a vacuum. You need
a commission to really hold on to
because its such a laborious and intense
process so yes, thankfully, I did receive
one commission and now Ive received
another so Im continuing that journey.
But yeah, you cant really write an opera
on the side. It doesnt work that way.
BLADE: Your vocals manage to be both
full voiced and big, yet also have a world
weariness to them. How do you do that?
WAINWRIGHT: I think part of it is
due to my love of opera. They have to
project in these huge halls so I try to kind
of emulate that. But growing up, even
before I became a big opera fan, my other
inuences were people like Judy Garland
and Al Jolson, these, you know, much
older kind of vaudevillian performers who,
again, had to project. I think that kind of
thing always attracted me more than,
I dont know, some kind of high quality
recording. I was more into the kind of
rough-and-tumble show biz epic. My voice
is a very unusual and mystifying monster
to me. I mean, I love my voice and Im
indebted to it eternally, but on the other
hand, it puts me through hell sometimes
trying to gure out what it is, where its
going to go and what it needs. It has a life
of its own. Im just dragged around.
BLADE: Youve said your last studio
album (2012s Out of the Game) with
(producer) Mark Ronson was the most
pop album youd ever made. Do you think
about pop and commercial appeal when
youre writing?
WAINWRIGHT: When I talk to my
accountant I do (laughs).
BLADE: But do you with the muses as well?
WAINWRIGHT: A little bit. I know a lot
of people who are very successful in the
industry in terms of pop music. You know,
Elton John or Neil Tennant. People whove
had real hits. Norah Jones. So its around
me and I see it happen and I wonder, you
know, why not me? Its always important
to have a dangling carrot in front of you in
the arts. You always have something you
havent quite attained yet, so Im thankful
for this as an impetus.
BLADE: Is your stu too smart perhaps
for the masses?
WAINWRIGHT: I think that might be
an issue. When I sing, it tends to grab
your attention fully. Im not very good
background music. It seems like most
pop music today is made to be played in
restaurants really.

Knowing what you want
is the rst step in
searching for a home
By TED SMITH
With the variety of housing terms oat-
ing around, its often confusing to renters
and buyers to say just what it is they are
looking for. So heres a guide to two cat-
egories that are often confused:
Housing type refers to the architectural
conguration of a desired home. In DC,
the MLS service (MRIS) designates various
housing types. Apartments (sometimes
called ats) are typically living spaces
all on one oor in multi-unit buildings.
Apartment buildings are categorized by
the number of stories: garden buildings
have from one to four stories, mid-rise
buildings have from ve to eight stories,
and high-rise buildings have nine-plus
stories.
Attached housing types include row-
houses, townhouses, fourplexes, and du-
plexes (not an exhaustive list). Rowhouses
are usually two-story living spaces (may
include a basement) that are connected
with shared side walls. Townhouses are
typically three- or even four-story liv-
ing spaces that may include a basement
rental apartment (in older townhouses)
or a ground-oor garage and o ce (in
newer townhouses), also attached in a
row like rowhouses. Fourplex and duplex
houses typically only share one common
side wall; in the case of fourplexes, there
is also an upstairs/downstairs barrier be-
tween the units.
Detached houses share no common
walls or oors/ceilings with other houses,
and may even have additional buildings
on the property like an exterior garage
or toolshed.
Ownership refers to the legal status of
a house. Here the big divide is between
rental housing and owned housing,
whether the ownership is for the whole
property (fee simple) or whether it is for
partial ownership (co-operative or con-
dominium). There is often confusion be-
tween the latter two, so here is a good
way to distinguish them: In a housing
co-operative (or coop), you own a propor-
tional share of the corporation that owns
the building; in a condominium (condo),
you actually own the real property consti-
tuting your house.
Now lets combine housing type and
housing ownership categories. Its pos-
sible to rent any housing type. However,
not all owned housing categories can be
combined with all housing types. For
example, its only to purchase detached
house or duplex on a fee simple basis.
Any other type of multiple-unit housing
requires a dierent form of ownership.
Typically, smaller clusters of the same
housing type (rowhouses, townhouses,
fourplexes, duplexes, even detached
houses in an enclosed community) use
a condominium form of ownership, and
condominium ownership is also common
for apartment buildings. In contrast, typi-
cally only multi-unit apartment buildings
use co-operative ownership. For exam-
ple, many of the co-operatives in Wash-
ington are former rental apartment build-
ings, e.g. the buildings along Connecticut
Avenue in Woodley Park and Cleveland
Park. In next months article, Ill talk more
about the dierences between condo-
miniums and co-operatives, and the rela-
tive advantages of each.
Meanwhile, armed with a better under-
standing of the dierence between hous-
ing type and housing ownership catego-
ries, you should have a clearer sense of
how to focus your search for a new home.
Happy hunting!

Entrepreneurial trio cooking
up a new course for
growing culinary enterprise
By MARK LEE
Tasting the sweet success of 10 years
concocting a recipe of slow-cooked
growth, the three partners at QCaterers
are planning to dramatically expand their
popular culinary enterprise.
Quintessential small business entre-
preneurs and company founders Pepe
Neira and Paul Herndon, along with chef
Carlos Cesario who joined them three
years ago, are as confdent as their clients
are appreciative that they smell a good
opportunity to grow in scope their local
catering operation.
Specializing in both corporate events
and private client residence functions,
QCaterers typically serves 15 to 300 guests
at meetings, receptions and dinners at
company facilities, prominent event ven-
ues or private homes. Menus highlight tra-
ditional American cuisine fused with Latin
and Mediterranean infuences.
Peruvian-born longtime D.C. resident
Neira last month headed to his birth-
place to study at Le Cordon Bleu Peru in
the upscale Mirafores district in Lima.
Enrolled in an intensive six-month pro-
gram at one of only three campuses in
the Western Hemisphere, he is concen-
trating on advanced studies in culinary
enterprise management. Also a graduate
of LAcademie de Cuisine, chef Neira is
preparing for the next phase of the trios
business plan by complementing his col-
lege law degree with the practicalities of
business administration.
While awaiting classes to begin next
month, Neira has immersed himself in the
favors, sounds and smells of the capital
city and its fast-growing economy. Speak-
ing passionately about the explosion of
Peruvian cuisine in both Washington and
worldwide, he notes the countrys pletho-
ra of native spices and colorful ingredients
utilized in regional cooking and the 300 va-
rieties of locally grown potatoes.
Neira remains engaged in the D.C.-
based catering operation, connecting
regularly with his colleagues via Skype to
plan scheduled events and revise event
menus, while also handling administra-
tive tasks from afar. His partners, includ-
ing now-husband Herndon who notes
their one-year wedding anniversary later
this month, also use meeting times to de-
tail their new venture.
Having developed a strong client base
in the D.C. area, they plan to initiate ca-
tering operations in Lima early next year.
Excited about the expansion, they are
quick to point out that local service for a
constantly expanding client base will con-
tinue unabated. They are also exploring
the launch of a small import operation
featuring company-branded quinoa, Pe-
ruvian chocolate and pisco liqueur.
Most of our new catering accounts and
event requests come from existing clients,
says former South Beach retail manager
Herndon, who primarily handles on-site cli-
ent relations. The quality of our food and
attention to detail is what recommends us,
he adds. We have built our business on
customer satisfaction, and repeat business
and referrals. QCaterers was voted Wash-
ington Blade Best Caterer in 2012, and
is currently focused on expanding service
for same-sex wedding events. Wedding
clients tend to trust someone who catered
their own, Herndon jokes.
Venezuelan-native Cesario landed his
frst culinary job as sous chef for a local
caterer, working for a decade alongside a
former White House chef. With no prior
experience, it was his passion for food
and familiarity with world cuisines from
extensive travels and architectural stud-
ies in Europe that landed him the job.
Cesario was sometimes assisted in the
kitchen by an occasional chef-freelancer
Neira and the two became fast friends.
Cesario would eventually accept a job of-
fer at QCaterers, recalling that joining a
small business operation was one of the
most important decisions of my life, not-
ing his enjoyment working for himself
alongside others.
What is most exciting about this jour-
ney, says Neira, is the chance to work
with great customers. Were at the top of
our game, he adds, and now have the ex-
citing opportunity to expand what we do.
