vortex

When a liquid flows into a nozzle at the bottom of a vessel, the liquid
above the nozzle often circulates in a clockwise/counter-clockwise direction.
Once the liquid has started rotating, a vortex can form down the center, and a
mixture of phases in the vessel flows through the nozzle. This sometimes results
in loss of pump suction (if the upper phase is a gas) orin por settling (if the
upper phase is a liquid). A device called a vortex breaker or anti-ortex
baffle can be placed in the vessel above the nozzle to prevent vortex formation.
