Austin Davis English 1102 Professor Raymond 03/30/2014 Annotated Bibliography 1. (Jenkins) Jenkins, Lee. "Snowboarding." New York Times [New York] 07 02 2006, n. page. Web. 25 Mar. 2014. search.serialssolutions.com.librarylink.uncc.edu a. An article from the New York times describing a new and upcoming star in the snowboarding world Shaun White. Talks about how White was added to the U.S. National Snowboarding team just a couple days prior. Also talks about how young White was when he began snowboarding, at the age of 7. Gives good examples about why White was added to the team because of his skill that was shown during the winter of 05-06 when he won 5 Grand Prix Half Pipe contests. Reporter goes on to say why white is such a good addition to the National team for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Doesnt really talk about many other popular athletes on the U.S. team just focuses on the new member on the team. b. Will be a very good source to outline Shaun Whites rise to popularity in both the National and International scene. Quote that will be used 19-year old White, long recognized for his creative moves and shoulder length red hair

2. ("U.S. Snowboarding Development")"U.S. Snowboarding Development." U.S. Snowboarding. USSA. Web. 31st March, 2014. ussnowboarding.com/snowboarding-programs/coaches/development a. In depth website that explains how someone wanting to become a professional snowboarder or skier would accomplish that. Gives lots of specific link explaining how to complete the steps to become registered with the USSA or the U.S. Skiing and Snowboarding Association. After registered outlines the plan aspiring snowboarders or skiers should follow in order to climb the ranks to get on the national level. Does not seem easy but very interesting to see that the website sets out a plan to help someone who is aspiring to become a professional. Gives detailed information about how to enter in regional competitions and talk about how after doing well in your regional competitions that opens up the door to go to bigger events and eventually reach the national competitions. b. Good source to show that the sport continues to grow at a national level and also seems to want people to try to reach their dreams of becoming a professional snowboarder. Even says if someone has the potential they can get in touch with some coaches that help younger athletes hone their skills. Doesnt give much history about the national level of snowboarding and when it began but very helpful to people who want to pursue this career. Good view of the national level of snowboarding, shows if you really want to you can become a professional following their guidelines.

3. (Grigoriadis ) Grigoriadis, Vanessa. "Shaun White: Big Hair, Big Air, and the Killer Inside." Rolling
Stone. 18 03 2010: n. page. Web. 1 Apr. 2014. www.rollingstone.com

a. Rolling Stones cover page and article after the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver where Shaun White won the gold at the half-pipe event again after he won the same medal in 2006. Short interview with Shaun talking about his experiences with the U.S. team going to and from their hotel in Vancouver to the competitions. He was always complaining because his teammates would always mess with him about his style of music, he prefers rock and roll while most of his team members listen to reggae. He said "A lot of guys on the team are so into reggae," says White. "They'd all be like, 'Yeah, bumbaclot nation!' I'd just be sitting there, like, 'Jesus.'" He shudders. "They knew that all I wanted to hear was rock & roll." Goes on to talk about his work ethic on and off the half-pipe, he recently released a video game in 2010, and also has his own clothing line. A quote from the head coach of the mens snowboarding team about Shaun he said Imagine an experiment where you mix the DNA of the most naturally talented athlete of a generation, say a Michael Jordan or a LeBron James, with the DNA of the hardest-working athlete imaginable, a Rocky Balboa or a Cal Ripken. Finally, you throw in the DNA from the most driven and uncompromising athletes you can think of, a Lance Armstrong or a Tiger Woods, and voila! Out pops Shaun." Also talks about how White is a loner and doesnt like to talk about snowboarding, he says Id rather do it not watch it, he also does not have any

Davis 4

real relationships with his fellow team-members he tends to stay away from snowboarding unless he is actually practicing or competing. b. Very informative article that shows more about who Shaun White is off the slopes rather than just what he does while on them. Even gives some history of his first competition in Japan in 1998 when he was 15 competing against snowboarders 10-15 years older than him. Will definitely use quotes directly from Shaun or the one describing his work ethic. Shows how hard he works at it and how much it pays off. Article does not really have any weaknesses all around very good informative article showing more about Shaun White and who is he behind the board. 4. (Snowboarding History) "Snowboarding History." 2002 Olympic Winter Games. CBC Sports. Web. 31 Mar 2014. www.fieldday.com/cbc/olympics/sports/snowboarding/history/index a. This is an article that begins with the origins of snowboarding, later on it talks about the origins of snowboarding becoming an Olympic Sport and even when the first ever snowboarding competition took place. The first ever snowboarding competition took place in Leadville, Colorado in 1981. The ISA or International snowboard Federation was founded eight years after this event. In 1991 the ISA joined with the FIS or International Ski Federation with its own wing under the FIS just for snowboarding. Snowboarding gained its Olympic status much faster than other Winter sports. It only took 6 years for Snowboarding to be added to the official list of the Winter Olympics.

b. Article has a lot of other information not pertaining to my part of our research for the project I am just focusing on the Olympic aspect of it. Will use some of the article pertaining to how some pro snowboarders during that time did not like the idea of snowboarding becoming an Olympic sport to be judged. Only one person was reported to speak out about it but the others participated because they probably wanted the recognition and rewards that came along with competing at an Olympic level. 5. (Vancouver 2010 Olympics Snowboard Mens Half-Pipe Finals)Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Snowboard Mens half-Pipe Finals. Olympic Movement, 2010. Web. 1 Apr 2014. <http://www.olympic.org/snowboard>. a. Video showing the 2010 Mens half-Pipe Finals at the Winter Olympics at Vancouver. Short video showing the final run of the three medalists of the event, Scotty Lago who won bronze ( America) Peetu Piiroinen who won silver ( Finland) and Shaun White who won his second consecutive gold medal for the Mens Half-Pipe at the Winter Olympics. White had already won the gold after his first run on the half-pipe so his second run was more of a showcase of a new move he had come up with call the Tomahawk. This moves official name is the Double Mctwist 1260 and is by far the hardest move in all of snowboarding to pull off. b. Strength is having actual video to show how talented Shaun White is at snowboarding and being able to explain how difficult it would be to pull this move off with the video. Doesnt show the first run he had which won him the

Davis 6

gold medal but the second run the his new move actually scored higher than his first run 6. ("Winter X Games")"Winter X Games." Wikipedia. N.p., 09 Mar 2014. Web. 1 Apr 2014. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_X_Games a. This website gives good information regarding the start of the Winter X Games, which started in 1997 one year before snowboarding was introduced into the Winter Olympics. The Winter X Games was not as big an event until 2002 when Winter X Games XIII took place in Aspen, Colorado at Buttermilk Mountain. This was also the first time the games would be televised live and the X Games also have coverage by Sports Center. The most memorable part about the 2002 Winter X Games was when the U.S. national team showed up to compete just weeks before the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. b. Good source showing the history of the Annual Tournament showcasing both snowboarding and skiing competitions annually. Could have more in regards to the Winter X games of previous years but seems to focus on the 2002 year which is understandable because of it being the first live televised X games but the information about the others could still be useful. Will probably be used because of the importance of the Winter X Games at a national level because this is where many Winter Olympians come to train and compete against some of their Olympic competitors. 7. Davis 7

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/140211/sports-other-sports/article/sochiwinter-Olympics-athletes-slam-dangerous-snowboard-freestyle a. This is an article published during the 2014 Winter Olympics that voices many of the athletes concerns over the bad conditions of the various courses that the athletes would be competing on later that week. There were many complaints from both competitors and coaches calling the courses far from perfect. Both snowboarders and skiers voiced their complaints about many of their courses they would be competing on about how conditions were not up to par for this such event. White even dropped out of the slope-style event after other competitors had some pretty bad crashes with some resulting in broken bones and torn ligaments. Some competitors commented though saying that the dangers of the sport is what brought them here and they thought that it was part of the challenge. b. Good source depicting some of the troubles athletes faced and being able to show different opinions on the slope conditions from competitors of both snowboarding and skiing. Doesnt give the point of view of the staff working on the slopes and the problems they encountered with weather conditions trying to adjust the slopes after the complaints were received from competitors. 8. a. Gives brief descriptions of professional snowboarders who are well known throughout the snowboarding world. Many of these names are fairly unknown to someone who doesnt actively watch and keep up with Snowboarding events like the Winter Olympics or the Winter X Games or other national snowboarding competitions. Gives brief description of Shaun white most well-known name of snowboarding. b. Gives very brief descriptions of famous snowboarders, many of whom are probably not well-known besides Shaun White. Not very descriptive when talking about the other snowboarders either could give a lot more information. Decent source for my uses because I dont need a very in-depth detailed description about other professionals but I do need more than what this site provides. 9. (Wetzel) Wetzel, Dan. "Shaun White leaves Olympics without a medal, or many snowboarding friends." Yahoo Sports. Yahoo Sports, 11 Feb. 2014. Web. 1 Apr 2014. <http://sports.yahoo.com/news/shaun-white-leaves-olympics-without-amedal--or-many-snowboarding-friends--as-new-era-in-sport-begins a. Very good article describing how some other snowboarders feel about Shaun White at this point in his career, after he failed to place at the 2014 half-pipe event in Sochi many of his competitors feel that its about time somebody else had a shot at the gold. Talks about how nobody seems to like White anymore or at least some dont, and how there seemed to be a surge of joy goin g through the mountain the night white failed to place. One of his teammates talked smack about his performance that night saying that him getting 4th place was a gift,

Davis 9

when his teammate placed 10th. Also talked about a special kid named Ben Hughes of St. Louis who is a leukemia survivor who made a request to the make a wish foundation to be able to see Shaun White at the half-pipe event in Sochi. Goes on to say how happy ben was and how much it meant to him to be able to see white snowboard even if it wasnt for the gold. b. This was an alright article but there was a whole lot of bias and outright hate against Shaun White for no reason than he was Shaun White. The article talks about how much Shaun had done for the sport of snowboarding and also the Olympics. Goes on to talk about how the sport wouldnt be where it was today, and how it wouldnt have the popularity it does, or the amount of money the athletes make if it wasnt for him. I dont think I will use this article because of the how wishy-washy it was going from how everyone was glad White failed in his third consecutive gold to this sport owing him so much. Good use of information regarding how much the sport owes Shaun to its popularity and the amount of money the competitors make now. 10. (About Snowboarding) "About Snowboarding." Sochi.ru 2014. Sochi Winter Olympics. Web. 1
Apr 2014. www.sochi2014.com/en/snowboard-about

a. Article posted on the 2014 Winter Olympics website that goes into detail about the new
snowboarding events this year. The number of events has increased from 10 to 6 from the last winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010. While there are only two new events to be added they are being added to both the men and womens competitions. The two new events are the parallel slalom and slopestyle events. The parallel slalom event is an event much like the slalom events in the skiing competition except there are two

Davis 10 competitors racing side by side for the best times. The slopestyle event that was added for the 2014 Olympics is an event where athletes perform on a slope featuring various forms of obstacles (rails, quarter pipes, and jumps). Athlete are scored on how well they complete the course and also the speed in which they complete the course.

b. Good source of information regarding the two new events for the 2014 Olympics, gave
decent descriptions about how each event worked and also how the event would be scored. More information can be found out about exactly how these two new events are scored and also who won the two specific events at the Oylmpics.
