Typical SCHNELL units fitted with Bowman TurboGenTM

SCHNELL designs and builds an advanced dual fuel CHP unit with an electrical efficiency of 48.3%1 by combining the Scania DC12 diesel engine with S30 TurboGenTM. Background
SCHNELL Motoren AG is a pioneer in biogas plant construction, based in Amtzell in southern Germany near the Swiss and Austrian borders. Originally an end-to-end provider, it has evolved into the market and technology leader for packaged dual fuel CHP units. Adding the Bowman Turbogenerator to our 6-cylinder dual fuel CHP unit was an important factor that enabled us to achieve market-leading efficiency of 48.3%1, and has contributed significantly to our rapid growth in this market over the last few years. We are delighted that we have now sold over 400 of these systems into the German and Czech markets and look forward to expanding our sales into other countries. Hans-Jrgen Schnell Founder & CEO, SCHNELL Motoren AG

The Challenge
SCHNELL wanted to offer end-users the benefits of a more efficient genset. In Germany, the feed-in tariffs step up to a subsidy when operating above 45% electrical efficiency1. The SCHNELL 265 kW CHP unit is based on the Scania DC12 engine which 235 kW engine power, 11.7 litre displacement, 6 in-line cylinders and 1,500 RPM. In 2009, SCHNELL integrated a Bowman S30 TurboGenTM in to the CHP unit. This increased the electrical efficiency (from 43% to 48.3%1) and increased the electrical power (from 235 kW to 265 kW).

The Benefits

The Bowman S30TurboGen enabled the SCHNELL 265 kW CHP unit to be the first dual fuel CHP unit to operate with an electrical efficiency higher than 45%. Typically end-users now gain extra revenue from the feed-in tariffs in excess of 50,000 (euros) per annum 2. The SCHNELL new solution offers: Increased power generation 30kW Extra annual revenue from feed-in tariffs, around 50,000 (euros) Emissions reduction
