Wow. I misjudged that one.
Sunday, in this space, I expressed the
slightest hint of a shadow of a concern that
our collective memory of the Vietnam War
casualties could be starting to fade.
Hooo, boy! Lotta responses.
Nobody was angry, but everybody who
contacted me wanted to let me know how
very much those veterans who gave their

Let me recap: The Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Foundation is building an electronic version of the
memorial wall in Washington, D.C. Dubbed Faces Never
Forgotten, the electronic wall is purporting to feature a short
biographical sketch of all 58,286 soldiers listed on the wall and at
least a mugshot of each of them. The people responsible for that
effort are missing some 24,000 photographs, and the Wisconsin
Newspaper Association is among several such associations
nationally that have pitched in to publicize the effort. My article
Sunday was a solicitation for photographs.
Im not looking for memories. I cant really do anything in this
instance with the stories people have to tell about the guys they
remember, and even tips about where I can go to get information
dont help, because there are too many names for me to launch an
investigation into the families and acquaintances.
Some people responded with photographs. Several others pledged
the use of their yearbooks.
Heres where we stand:
I no longer need James J. Ahrens of Green Bay. His picture is
already up on the electronic wall, so I didnt need to bother people
about him in the first place. Incidentally, the information I was sent
said he died in Vietnam in June 1965, making him 16 years old.
That was incorrect. He was 20 and died in 1969.

Green Bay man killed in crash on
US 41 in Grand Chute
Apr. 16, 2014
I shouldnt have printed Lawrence N. Stangels name, either. A
sailor from Green Bay, he already is featured on the wall at
vvmf.org.
Relatives submitted very nice photos of David F. Cleereman, Frank
V. Herrera and Joseph R. Van De Hei, all of Green Bay, so I no
longer need those.
Relatives of Ronald E. Pochron and Richard M. Banaszynski, both
of Pulaski, have promised to provide me with photos. A relative of
Thomas F. Przybelskis has promised to track down other relatives,
who may have something on him.
I have nothing better than a seventh-grade photo of Patrick A.
Connelly, born 1-26-49, of Green Bay, but some of his old friends
are checking with people they know to see if we can do better. I
hope so. Seventh-grade is pretty young.
We have a picture a little blurry but not terrible in-house for
John K. Marshall, 6-20-49, a Marine from Green Bay. Maybe theres
a better one out there.
I have promises of yearbook shots for Eugene K. Lupe, 10-8-49, and
Steven P. Rance, 10-10-49, both of Green Bay. Ive not seen them
yet; Ive asked the owners of those yearbooks to hold off for a bit, to
see if someone comes in with something better. Yearbook shots
arent ideal, but well send them in if nothing else materializes.
I thought I had a line on a photo for Timothy J. Murphy, 8-28-47, of
Green Bay, but now Im not sure. A lot of people remember him,
though, and some think they may be able to reach a relative.

Heres one from Green Bay I missed entirely: David F. Schuette.
Born 4-26-48, he was in the Navy and was killed Feb. 10, 1970,
according to the information sent to me.
Theres also a Brown County man missing from the list Id been
sent: A Marine named Edward R. Grusczynski, 12-20-49, from
Denmark.
While were at it, here are the names of some Vietnam War
casualties from our general area whose pictures also are still
needed: Robert J. Benedict, Little Suamico; Leonard M. Nowak,
Luxemburg; Thomas C. Larsen, Oneida; Carl J. Riederer, David L.
Schettl and Gerald R. Schiesl, all from Manitowoc; Allen J. Kakuk,
Two Rivers; Martin J. Pamonicutt, Neopit; James K. Schmoll,
Shiocton; Alan E. Singer, Shawano; Patrick H. Tober, Tigerton;
Benjamin A. Chitko, Pembine; Ronald A. Michaud, Niagara; and
Paul J. Pamanet, Wausaukee.
Remember, I need photographs, not information. Im just the go-
between on this, so if you think you know the brother of a guy who
used to deliver papers to the veterans cousins ex-wifes pastor, I
dont want to know about that. Just give the guy a call. If he can help
dig up a photo, Ill take it and send it to the proper place, so it can
get posted on the electronic wall. Photos can be sent to me at
psrubas@pressgazettemedia.com or snail-mailed to me at Green
Bay Press-Gazette, PO Box 23430, Green Bay, WI 54305
Meanwhile, check out the project at vvmf.org. Its quite cool.
