Brunei territory.
• On 17 September 1888, Treaty of Protection
was signed between Sultan Hashim and Sir
Hugh Low.

Nov. 24 Treaty of Protection was a failure.
• British Government still could not protect
Brunei as Brunei lands such as Limbang was
still taken by Charles Brooke.

Scene 1 (In Brunei)

Charles Brooke talk to his followers

CB: Ermm…Limbang is rich in food-growing.
CB: I must take Limbang! That land belongs to me!
It was part of the Terusan Concession in 1884.

Narrator:
As a result, on 17 March 1890, Charles
Brooke seized Limbang from Brunei.

Scene 2 (In the Palace)

In the palace with Sultan Hashim’s followers
SH: Now, Charles Brooke had seized Limbang from
us.
SH: I strongly opposed it! Limbang was my Kuripan
property.

Narrator:
Sultan Hashim wrote a letter to the British
Government to show his protest to Charles
Brooke. The British Government sent Noel
Trevenan to settle the Limbang issue.
Therefore, Noel Trevenan sent letters to 15
local chiefs of Limbang to attend meeting.18
local chiefs were not invited.

NT: My main objective to gather all of you here is

to ask for your opinion whether you agree
Limbang to join Sarawak, under Charles Brooke or
not to join.

12 local chiefs raised up their hands.

NT: Hmmm…It seems that 12 of you agree to join

Sarawak under Charles Brooke.

SH: I totally do not agree with Trevenan’s
investigation regarding this matter.
SH: He did not invite all the local chiefs and we did
not know the opinions of those who were not

invited.
SH: Moreover, those who were invited were all
Brooke’s supporters.
SH: One more thing! The officials who
accompanied Trevenan all worked for Charles
Brooke. This is not fair!
SH: Now, I wanted the British to honour the 1888
Treaty of Protection

Narrator:
Instead the British accepted Trevenan’s
report and confirmed Charles Brooke’s
annexation of Limbang in July 1891.
