Teacher Candidate: Sydney Teal Subject/Grade: Kindergarten/Math Learning Objective:

Lesson # _task 4

The student will be able to successfully write and represent a subtraction equation by using a 10's frame.

Alignment with Standards: KOA1- Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: This activity is appropriate for the students, because they have been working with subtraction for a week. They understand the concept of taking away and taking apart. They have used the strategy of the number line therefore; they need to learn a new strategy. Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Assessment for Objective: The student will create his or her own subtraction equation, and write it beside their 10's frame. Assessment for Objective: The student will use an empty 10's frame to represent their subtraction equation. Use of Formative Assessment I will use this information to guide me on planning. If the students are successful, I will introduce a new strategy. If they are not successful, we will continue using 10's frames.

Objective 1: The student will successfully write a subtraction equation. Objective 2: The student will successfully use the 10's frame to represent their equation.

Accommodations:
My students love hands on learning. This lesson they get their own sheet of stickers to fill in their 10's frames. For my early finishers, I will have them draw a picture and represent it with a subtraction equation on the back. For my students who need the one on one instruction, they will receive that by being placed in a group that I can let work on their own while I work with the other student. Students who have any behavior issues, will be asked to go sit at the back of the room by themselves, while the students participate in math centers.

Materials: Smart board Stickers 10's frame worksheet Pencil Procedures:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Can someone tell me what does it mean to take apart? Is take away and take apart the same thing? How do you know? Teacher will introduce subtracting with 10's frames on the smart board. Teacher will call on students to come up and write a subtraction equation. Teacher will guide student(if they need guidance) in representing an equation with a 10's frame. As a class, they will complete several subtraction equations using a 10's frame. Teacher will dismiss students to centers, and pull small groups so that they can complete their 10's frames worksheet.

Activity Analysis:
The first activity that the students participated in was the whole group instruction of using the 10's frames to represent their equation. This activity corresponded to their small group work. We worked on filling in the 10's frame correctly, then correctly marking out (taking away). This activity allowed them to interact with the smart board, and to help their peers. The second activity was the small group activity that they completed on their own using the 10's frame. I worked with small groups, and each group had their own 10's frame worksheet. Each student had their own sheet of stickers, where they had to represent their equation on the 10's frame. The students enjoyed this activity. They enjoyed using the stickers instead of just using their crayons.
