Monday Essential Question

How do I know the difference between destructive and constructive processes? How can I identify the different constructive and destructive processes?

Lesson Plan Hannah Singleton Theme: Wonders of the World Tuesday Wednesday
How can I determine what process formed the Grand Canyon? How can I discover the cause/effect of constructive and destructive processes on Earth? What are the different types of surface features on the Earth? How can I determine what process formed the Grand Canyon?

Thursday
How can I compute the volume of spaces too large to measure? How can I demonstrate how a volcano works with the movement of my body?

Friday
How can I demonstrate how a volcano works with the movement of my body? How can I compare the Grand Canyon with other wonders of the world?

Instruction

We will begin the lesson by starting a new chapter on destructive and constructive processes along with discussing the Grand Canyon and how it was formed. Students will be given a list of vocabulary words to include in their Through the Year dictionary.

A review of the constructive and destructive processes will begin the lesson, focusing mainly on erosion and how this process formed the Grand Canyon. As a class we will discuss the cause/effect of erosion and other processes on the Earth and the Grand Canyon.

Beginning again with a review from Tuesdays lesson, this will lead into a discussion as to what surface features students found while doing their research and what types are on Earth. We will then look pictures of different types of surface features and certain important places in the United States.

Students will recall from the week what we have discussed and found out about the Grand Canyon. We will look at the volume of the Grand Canyon and other areas too large to physically measure and as a small time of relief we will demonstrate how certain processes (volcanoes) works with the movement of our bodies. As a class we will choreograph a dance with movements to demonstrate our Volcano dance.

Students will begin by practicing their own volcano dance and by given a chance to volunteer to share their dance with their classmates. Students will be given an instruction page for their Web Page Group Project.

Guided Practice

Students will be given a vocabulary fill in the blank that we discuss and answer as a class.

As a class, we will complete a cause/effect chart of the different types of processes.

As a class, we will look and label pictures of different surface areas under the correct heading.

We will go over making a Web Page as a class and discuss/answer any questions groups may have about the requirements. If time allows, students will be given a chance to meet with their group members to begin brainstorming and planning out how they want to go about creating their Web Page.

Independent Practice

Students will write out and define their list of vocabulary words and put them in their Through the Year dictionary. These will be checked as a participation grade.

Students will research how erosion formed the Grand Canyon and the cause/effect of constructive and destructive processes on Earth and record all information in a typed paragraph format.

Students will have a chart to cut and paste pictures of surface features under the correct label/heading on their chart. The students will then have to write out what process caused the certain surface feature.

Students will be given a chance to choreograph their own volcano dance and share it with the class. Students will also be given time to research more information about the volume of the Grand Canyon.
