effects of social media on education? Thesis: Social media has helped changed the way of education for the good by making things faster and more accessible as well as for the bad by causing distractions and shortcuts. Jong, Bin-Shyan; Chien-Hung Lai, Yen-Teh Hsia, Tsong-Wuu Lin, Yu-Syuan Liao. An Exploration Of The Potential Educational Value Of Facebook. Computers In Human Behavior 32.(2014): 201-211. Academic Search Complete. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. This article has several authors. Each of them works in the Department of Information & Computer Engineering at universities in Taiwan. This article is about how Facebook may have some educational value to it. They mention how it motives the users, how it makes it easier to share resources, and how immediate and convenient it is. I would say this article has a positive view when it comes to social media and learning. Throughout the article they compare Facebook with other e-learning sites, like Moodle for example, and they took surveys to see, which is preferred by the users. I do agree with a lot of the things mentioned in the article, for instance, when they say, The manner in which Facebook operates can greatly increase the speed by which users obtain new information. This helps them to solve problems in a more efficient way, which may in turn help to improve the learning performance of students. This article really shows the potential educational use of social media, Facebook in particular, and it will be very helpful for my research. I can use this article to show how social media is impacting education for the good.
Comment [AP2]: This is really great. But can you provide specific examples discussed in the article? Comment [AP1]: What do you mean here? this is a little ambiguous for me. But the idea that social media is good for education is a really interesting idea.

Popescu, Elvira. Providing Collaborative Learning Support With Social Media In An Integrated Environment. World Wide Web 17.2 (2014): 199-212. Academic Search Complete. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. My next source is by Elvira Popescu has a PhD and works in the Computers and Information Technology Department at The University of Craiova. This article is also on the positive side of social media and education. It advocates the use of social media collaboratively with learning. In the article Popescu says, these so called digital natives have different patterns of work, attention and learning preferences. Therefore, the traditional teaching methods should be adapted to the needs of this new Internet generation, offering support for social and collaborative learning. I completely agree with her on this idea of adapting the teaching methods. Everyone else has been criticizing the way kids are today instead of thinking to adapt to the new generation. I can use this to argue in favor of social media. Her article really shows how our generation thinks and learns differently from past generations. Turan, Zeynep, Hasan Tinmaz, and Yuksel Goktas. The Reasons For Non-Use Of Social Networking Websites By University Students. Comunicar 21.41 (2013): 137-145. Communication & Mass Media Complete. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. This article speaks more negatively towards social media. It is by Zeynep Turan, Hasan Tinmaz, and Yuksel Goktas who all work at different universities in the technology departments. In this article, University students talk about why they dont use social networks, Facebook in particular. They all have similar reasons along the lines of how its distracting, a waste of time, and not as private as it claims to be. All these things are true about social networks. I agree with some of the things they say about social media in this article such as when they say its a distraction. I will use the information from this

article to show the negative effects of social media on education., It will be very beneficial to that side of the argument. Cabero, Julio, and Vernica Marn. Educational Possibilities Of Social Networks And Group Work. University Students' Perceptions. Comunicar 21.42 (2014): 165-172. Communication & Mass Media Complete. Web. 26 Feb. 2014. Julio Cabero and Vernica Marn who both teach at the University of Crdoba in Spain wrote this article. They surveyed some college students about using social networking for their education as well as using it for group work. I would have to say that this article goes along with the positives of social media with education. They provide information on how their students responded and why they responded that way. Their results showed that the students would like to use the social networks for learning and group work but had little knowledge of the tools. They study they did showed that the students benefited from using social media for their education in various ways. Junco, R., G. Heiberger, and E. Loken. The Effect of Twitter on College Student Engagement and Grades. Www.ferris.edu. Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2010. Web. <http://www.ferris.edu/htmls/administration/president/sparc/meetings/docs/StudentEngagement Article.pdf> This article as three authors: R. Junco, G. Heiberger, and E. Loken. Each of them are from different universities. This article analyzes the use of social media, Twitter in particular, with higher education. Overall this article is in favor of social media and argues that it has a positive impact on education. They did a study with college students to support their theory. I agree with a lot of things said in this article for instance, A major category of social media activity is social networking. Social networking websites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter, have become an integral part of U.S. college students lives. I agree with this completely because it is rare to see an American college student without any social media sites.
Comment [AP4]: Okay, so I think it is great to include the other side, but I also want to hear more of your thoughts on what the source has to say. What specifically do you disagree with and why?

This article will be very helpful in showing the positive sides of social media when it comes to education. Vanessa,
I think youve done some fine research here. The sources youve found seem peer -reviewed and you do a good job explaining their content and their relevance to your topic. Although, Im not getting a sense of what exactly your thesis is about, or more accurately, Im not sure what exactly youll be advocating for. Are you talking about young children? Are you talking about any age? College? Also, I would like to see more of your voice here; I really want to know where your voice fits into the conversation. I need you to be a participant, not merely a reporter. What are the implications in your source texts conversations? How are you interpreting them? Really dig into the conversation. I think youve done good work here, and I look forward to your resear ch paper.
Comment [AP5]: How so? I need more elaboration here.
